Land Acknowledgement
Land Acknowledgement In our YRDSB schools, we honour the history of the land that our schools stand upon. Land acknowledgements are one step towards learning from and on the land, as well as building respectful relationships with the Wendat, Haudenosaunee and the Anishinaabe peoples, who lived and continue to live on the land.
Today, we want to acknowledge that we are learning on the traditional territories of the Wendat, Haudenosaunee and the Anishinaabe peoples. We have a shared responsibility to this land. Together, we want to protect our shared resources and use them in a good way for the future generations of all communities.
In Kindergarten, learning in the outdoors is integrated into each day. Your child will be learning from and on the land, through inquiries, exploration and play. For example, a simple activity of saying ‘hello’ to all the living things when we take children outside connects children to the natural world and helps build a relationship with the land. In this way, children develop a love of the land and a need to protect it. And in the same manner, children understand that the land protects us.

In addition, Kindergarten students also interact with 1-2 additional teachers each week as part of their regular program.
2021-22 Staffing is not yet finalized and there may be changes to our Kindergarten Team for September.
Kindergarten is for all Children In kindergarten, we view each child as capable, competent and full of potential.
Each child is unique and develops at their own pace. Our kindergarten learning spaces are inclusive and the learning experiences offer opportunities for children to build on their own strengths and be empowered as learners.
Inclusive & Equitable Learning in Kindergarten Play-based learning in kindergarten honours and reflects children’s lived experiences, interests, social identities and
home languages.
The Kindergarten Program Kindergarten is a play-based learning program. There are no subjects in Kindergarten, but rather, there are four interconnected frames for learning:● Belonging and Contributing● Self Regulation and Well Being● Demonstrating Literacy and Mathematics
Behaviours● Problem Solving and Innovating.
These four frames reflect how all children naturally learn in an integrated way during their exploration, play and inquiry, both indoors and outdoors.
Play-Based Learning IndoorsChildren have opportunities throughout the day to choose from
a variety of play-based learning experiences that integrate many areas of learning from our Kindergarten Program.
Play-Based Learning OutdoorsLearning in the outdoors is an integral part of each day in Kindergarten. In
addition to scheduled recess and lunch recess times, students can expect to spend 45-90 minutes outdoors each day. Please ensure your child arrives
at school every day with appropriate outdoor clothing.
How Your Child’s Learning is Assessed
• The Four Frames reflect the integrated way in which children learn through exploration, play & inquiry.
• Educators assess your child’s learning and development in each frame using documentation in a variety of ways, such as, photographs, video clips, and conversations.
• This ongoing collection of your child’s learning and assessment will be shared with you over the course of the year.

Our School RoutinesAll children attend school all day, every day.
8:15 a.m. Entry10:05-10:25 a.m. Outdoor Recess12:05-1:05 p.m. Lunch (30 min. to eat , 30 min. outdoor play)2:45 p.m. Dismissal
All students enter and dismiss from the Kindergarten Yard, on the south side of the school, adjacent to the school’s main entrance.
Students must be dropped off and picked up at the Kindergarten Yard.
Kindergarten Arrival RoutinesThe school day begins promptly at 8:15 a.m.
All K1 and K2 students must be dropped off in the
Kindergarten Yard, on the south side of the school, adjacent
to the school’s main entrance.
Students need to arrive punctually for school and be in the
Kindergarten Yard between 8:00-8:15 a.m. During inclement
weather days, when it is extremely cold or when it is raining,
students are welcomed into the school at 8:00 a.m. and then
will be supervised in the classroom.
Students who arrive in the morning on a school bus will be
met by school staff who will accompany them from the bus
to the Kindergarten Yard.
Kindergarten Dismissal RoutinesThe school day ends at 2:45 p.m.
All K1 and K2 students must be and picked up by a
caregiver or parent from the Kindergarten Yard, on
the south side of the school, adjacent to the school’s
main entrance.
Students attending the aftercare program in the
school are escorted by childcare staff to their childcare
room.
Students who return home on a school bus will be
escorted and supervised by school staff who will
accompany them to the bus from the Kindergarten
Yard or classroom.
Recess Time Children go outside for
recess every day, weather permitting.
Morning Recess Time: 9:55-10:25 a.m.
Lunch Recess Time:12:35-1:05 p.m.
Lunch & Snack
Routines for Lunch & Snacks Lunch Hour is 12:05-1:05 p.m.
All students are inside eating from 12:05-12:35 p.m., and in the school yard from 12:35-1:05 p.m.

Current Public Health guidelines prevent families from dropping lunches and snacks off at the
school, so all students must arrive in the morning with their snack and lunch already packed.
Parents picking up children to go home for lunch should do so promptly at 12:05 p.m. and return
them to school promptly at 1:05 p.m.
Snack is eaten prior to morning recess. Children are encouraged to make healthy choices for their
daily snack (e.g., fresh fruit and vegetables or crackers and cheese).
Tips for Kindergarten Lunch & Snacks
● use containers that are easy for your child to open independently; practice opening them together at home
● consider litterless lunches and snacks● ensure food products are nut-free ● ask your children to help you prepare lunches and
snacks● label containers, lunch bags and reusable water bottles
Washroom and Self-Help RoutinesChildren are encouraged, as independently as possible to: • use the washroom • wash their hands with soap and
water• dress and undress themselves
(zippers, buttons, shoes, etc.)Educators support children as they learn these new classroom routines.
Before and After Child Care Program
If you require a Before and After Child Care Program for your child, you may choose to contact the Before and After Care provider at Franklin Street PS, Rainbows Child Care.
Registration for Rainbows Before and After Care Program is now open for September 2021. Should you wish to register in the program please visit their website at amongfriendschildcare.com, click on forms, click on New Family 2021-2022 and submit the online request form . Should you have any questions please contact Rainbows directly at 905-552-0610.

Will Your Child be Taking the Bus?
Families can access the Student Transportation Service of York Region website - net.schoolbuscity.com to:• check if your child is eligible for the school bus• find out where your child’s bus stop will be located
Looking Forward to September
We are all looking forward to September and realize that you might be wondering what this will look like for your child starting Kindergarten.
While we may not know exactly what September will look like yet, the YRDSB continues to work very closely with York Region Public Health to ensure we are taking all appropriate measures to protect the health and safety of our students, staff and families

The First Day of KindergartenThe first day of school for the 2020-2021 school year is Thursday, September 9th.
On the first day, your K1 (Junior Kindergarten) student will only be attending school for a 100-minute block, from (10:25 a.m. to 12:05 p.m.). This is when you will find out who your child’s teacher is. The teachers/office staff will come outside the main office doors to greet the new students at 10:25 a.m.
Your child will start coming full days, starting on Friday, September 10th.
There is no busing available for K1 (Junior Kindergarten) students on the first day of school.
Supported Entry - Thursday. Sept. 9
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2021
● Year 1 students (JK) come for only 100-minutes● 10:25 a.m.-12:05 p.m.
● All students come full day beginning on the second day of school – Friday, September 10, 2021
● Full days begin promptly at 8:15 a.m. and dismissal happens at 2:45 p.m.
Tips For a Successful First Day
1. Get up in time to allow for a relaxed morning routine
2. Send a family photo in your child’s backpack so they can ‘visit you’ throughout the day if they need to feel connected to you
3. Remind your child of who is picking them up after school
4. Use a goodbye routine you have practiced with your child
5. Remember to remain cheerful and reassure your child that they will be okay!
