EditorialCrisp powdery dry snow is an inspiration to artists andphotographers. What a pleasure it was to see snow in Killincovering all the everyday imperfections with a blanket ofwhite accompanied by frosted trees and the low winter sun. What fun to be a curler, p20, on Killin's own curling pond. The aftermath, ice covered roads and paths, burst pipes, damaged homes and an unexpected strain on alreadystretched Stirling Council resources, was the unpleasant flipside. Congratulations to all whose efforts helped to keepthings going, the Council workers whose long hours keptpaths and roads clear, the local tradesmen and women whoresponded to emergencies, day and night, and thebusinesses maintaining business as usual. It's a pleasure tolive in Killin. Co-operation to get things done is part of village life.Volunteering is almost a way of life for many in Killin. Youwill see that volunteers are needed for vacancies in theCommunity Council, p9. So much more could be achieved ifthe resilient long standing members of the communitycouncil had more, your support. Don't wait to be asked, rise to the challenge and apply. Let's celebrate a local achievement. Emily Crow, aged 11with remarkable talents has reached the semi finals ofSky1's Got To Dance. Following years of hard work anddedication, competing from the age of five and supported bydedicated parents, she is well on her way to achieving herlife ambitions. It is with some sadness we find this year that salmon stocksare low. Catches were down 50% last year in somestretches, so much so that fishermen are urged to returnevery salmon they catch in the Loch Tay system until theend of May. The Killin Cutting Carbon office will open to the public onFriday 19th February, p6. Come and see what they have tooffer and meet other agencies involved in the cutting carbonfootprint business. WA

Update Killin Cutting Carbon : Sponsoredby the Climate Challenge Fund theinsulation project is nearingcompletion. We hope to find outabout levels of insulation before theproject, by how much that has beenimproved and if specific insulationproblems such as solid stone walls, coombe ceilings or cost preventeduptake. A report will be publishedby the 31st March. The advisers areavailable to help take the projectforward and you will be able to meetthem at the open day.The Thrift Shop: KAT's work toenhance community assets continuesbut acquiring charitable finance topurchase properties can take a longtime. Breadalbane Folklore Centre:Stirling Council have decided to keepthe centre open for 2010 whilediscussions and negotiations takeplace about how it could be used forthe village. Killin Cutting Carbon Insulation ProjectIn October, the Killin and Ardeonaig Trust launched an Energy EfficiencyProject for the community. Since then, with funding from the ScottishGovernment Climate Challenge Fund, almost half the households in thecommunity have been surveyed and over 40 have benefited from free ordiscounted loft or cavity wall insulation. Householders who had insulation installed will benefit from savingsaveraging over £200 per annum.

Some local residents have told us how pleased they are that their housesstay warmer for longer now that they have improved their insulation.

The project is now drawing to a close. There is a final chance for anyonewho has not yet had a survey or has changed their mind to have free ordiscounted insulation installed. Call project partner, Michael Carr, at theEnergy Agency on 01292 525507 or drop into the KAT/Killin CuttingCarbon office in the Sports and Leisure Club and speak to Bernard orMairi. Welcome to the first report from theKillin Cutting Carbon office currentlybased at the Sports and LeisureCentre in Killin. In order to help the village reduce itscarbon emissions we need to absorba great deal of information on climatechange and peak oil, to fit that to thelocality and yet remain sensitive tothe needs of the community. We maynot always get the balance right thusit's important we have your feedbackand positive criticism. Don't be shy, come and have a chat.Mairi and Bernard have made a start, meeting with local organisations, gathering ideas, identifying suppliers, talking to local businesses andsourcing appropriate expertise. As theyear progresses we hope to build onthat knowledge and share it with thevillage. This will include realexamples of things that work and alsoinclude those things that don't work.It will also explain clearly what thecarbon issues are and how they relateto each of us. The aim is to involvethe community in tackling the issue ofclimate change and peak oil byreducing the amount of carbon usedin Killin. If you have done somethingthat improved a heating bill orreduced waste that you would like toshare with us or have expertknowledge then please get in contact.

Our main job is to provideinformation from the office and the

7

internet on ways to reduce carbonand save money. We will always takeinto account the costs of a solutionand where possible advise on how toget the best deal or get it for free.We want from the outset to take apragmatic view and realise that itmust work for you or we will havefailed in our job. In order to do thiswe need your say. We havebrochures, leaflets and energymonitors available for use in yourhome free of charge. We are in theprocess of putting together a packcalled "Ways to reduce carbon forzero cost". This will be available fromthe office and via the website in thenear future. We intend to build some fun workingmodels to illustrate how renewabletechnologies work.

Many of us have already reduced ouruse of carbon through measures suchas insulating our homes properly, installing fuel efficient heatingsystems and recycling waste. A fewpeople in the area are already usingmicro-generation technology andrenewable fuel resources. Someways of reducing carbon usage arenot so obvious - for instance LPG ordiesel Land Rovers (4X4) vehicles areessential, practical vehicles in thisenvironment. We can mitigate theircarbon emissions by maintainingthese vehicles. Longevity of the Land

Rover is legendary and can be said tooffset the effects of emissions purelybecause they are not traded in for anew replacement every three years. We will also be looking at ways toreduce carbon in sustainable longterm projects and will announce theseas the mist becomes clearer.Wood fuel is considered carbonneutral as it consumes the sameamount of carbon in its growth cycleas it emits when burnt as a fuel. With so many trees around us, itwould appear at first sight to beworth investigating as a long termrenewable energy source.

Official launch day for the KillinCutting Carbon office is Friday 19thFebruary at the Sports and LeisureCentre opposite the Killin Hotel. Wewill be open from 11:00 to 18:00.Please come along and voice yourideas, thoughts and experiences orjust to meet the team and chat overtea and biscuits.

ComputerornerWindows 7The new operating system fromMicrosoft, Windows 7, is still goingwell. There have been problems, though, with compatibility with olderperipherals and software. Inparticular Windows 7 is available inboth 32 bit and 64 bit versions. The32 bit version will offer morecompatibility with oldersoftware/hardware and the 64 bitversion will allow the operatingsystem to use more of thecomputer's power and thus will havebetter performance. The 64 bitversion will only run on computerswith a 64 bit processor. I have seen problems with the 64 bitversion running older programs, including games and graphic

intensive applications and youshould take care if you are lookingat the 64 bit version.Older Computers I have seen a spate of 4-5 year oldcomputers with faulty hard discscoming to me for repair. In nearlyevery case, the owner of themachine has not backed up theirdata/programs/emails. Computersof this age do tend to die, their harddisc is usually the first part to fail.Typical symptoms include longdelays when saving files, grindingnoises from the machine itself andthe system taking a very long timeto start or shutdown. These areindications that your hard disc willfail in the near future and youshould consider taking pre-emptiveprecautions to ensure that your datais protected. These disc faults can usually berepaired but not always can the databe salvaged.Online/Offsite BackupsI know I keep on about backing upyour data, but this really is the mostimportant tasks related to yourcomputing. I have seen heartbreakwhen the family photos are lost andI have seen businesses collapseafter a hard disc resulted in loss ofall of the business critical data.Backing up data is not a chore. Ittakes a small amount of time toconfigure and then can be allowed

to do its job automatically. You canbackup to external disc, or you candecide to protect your data evenmore by backing up automaticallyon-line.There are many types of externaldisc and many types of on-linestorage and you should take care toensure you select the most suitablefor your needs.Every business should have someform of offsite backup. Just imaginewhat would happen if an electricalsurge, or fire were to destroy yourcomputer and any locally storeddata. Not many businesses wouldbe able to recover from such adisaster. There are entry level offsite filestores which serve a basic purpose, but they are typically stored on slowmachines, with slow internetconnection. This only allows you tosave a small amount of data eachday. Typically businesses who useemail will find these types of systemunsatisfactory. It is better to look for a service thatoffers access that is fast enough foryou to backup all of your dataonline. Costs for these types ofservice vary dependent upon theamount of storage you need.Typical prices are £10-£25 per yearper GB, with many service providersallowing you to pay monthly.

The Breadalbane Community Councils Forum is made up of representatives from Balquhidder, Lochearnhead,Strathyre CC, Killin CC and Strathfillan CC. It has been set up by the Community Councils as a joint working groupthat can tackle issues of common concern - a grassroots evolution from the more Stirling Council led approach toarea community planning. Since first meeting in September, joint letters have been written to express concern about the Glen Ogle road andmeetings held with appropriate organisations. The response has been an extensive survey and safety measuresproposed which should be carried out soon.Access to health care services has been a priority common issue which led to a meeting with Bruce Crawford MSP.His intervention has helped to clarify some issues and ongoing support to try and resolve others. A further meetingspecifically to discuss the problem of access to the new hospital in Larbert has been arranged for mid February.Other priority issues of common concern include access to lifelong learning, public toilets, village officer role andpublic transport. The Forum believes that, by concentrating on one issue at a time and working as a small representative group, theymay achieve more than the previous approach of presenting an area community plan to service providers withoutany clear idea of who would be responsible for progressing actions. If you have concerns about services affecting the wider area, then please raise these with your local CommunityCouncillors. Killin CC Chair: Fiona Kennedy, Strathfillan CC Chair: John Riley

Breadalbane Community Councils Forum

Rural communities often find that things fall short of expectation. While we may complain about it we don't reallyexpect things to get better. Why are the needs of rural communities often overlooked?Encountering the same old problems over and over again and not expecting better leads to a feeling ofpowerlessness. Lack of finance can only make the problem worse.

How can a community make a difference? It needs more power, more people who can stand up and make their voices heard.

Your Community Council members have worked hard for you over the years. They feel the injustice and concernson your behalf. They have tried to push limits to improve your lot. You can make a difference. Volunteer, join the Community Council, represent the community views, take thoseviews to the very people who have influence. Your Community Council needs you. Meetings are held every twomonths. Contact Fiona Kennedy, Pamela Farquharson, Charlie Grant, Tim Frost or any of the CommunityCouncillors to find out how you can help.

Crianlarich Into Action

A small group of like-mindedCommunity Councillors and TrustDirectors have formed an actiongroup in response to the potentialnegative impact on the Crianlaricheconomy and its community as adirect result of the proposed Bypass. The group have devised threeobjectives, which we feel areachievable.* The need to make Crianlarich a

destination rather than somewhere to 'pass through'.

* To take control of the Village's future by looking after and maintaining the day-to-day running of the village.

* Promoting the village as a destination and providing facilities for the public to use and enjoy in and around Crianlarich.

Projects: this is not an exhaustivelist but we consider that the itemslisted are what would attract thepublic into the village.* Mountain Rescue/Railway/Farming

Museum* Public Transport Interchange* New or improved Public Toilets* Cycle Track From Crianlarich to

Tyndrum and later a cycle path from Crianlarich to Killin

* Riverside and hill walks, including Picnic areas and seating at strategic view points

* Identify designated car-parking areas

* Campsite and camping facilities along with 'Aires' (motorhome and caravan service station)

* Secure bicycle parking, local bike hire and service station.

* Village and environs maintenance employing local people, which could be a Strathfillan wide project.

The action group report to both theStrathfillan Trust and the CommunityCouncil.

We have arranged a meeting withMs. Fiona Logan, Chief Executive ofthe National Park on 27th January at11:30 am in Crianlarich Hall.

Community FuturesGoes Green - Cutting Carbon inStrathfillan and theNational ParkEight communities (Strathfillan,Buchanan, Kilmaronock, Strachur,Lochgoil, Gartmore, Sandbank andBenmore & Kilmun) are workingtogether and, through theCommunity Partnership, have madea successful bid for a grant of over£100,000 from the ClimateChallenge Fund. The project hastwin aims - to reduce eachcommunity's carbon footprint and tosave individual householders money. For each community the consortiumis targeting all households, rented orowner occupied, to help themreduce their CO2 emissions by anaverage of 1.5 tonnes per annum. They are aiming for 40% uptake. Itis recognised that half of all ruralhouseholds in Scotland are in fuelpoverty but many households arenot in receipt of benefits. Throughthis project CERT funding can bedrawn down to contribute to thecost of insulation in 2010-11.Where possible, other potentialsources of funding will be sought bythe steering group and projectmanagement team and the cost ofthe measures can be brought downthrough working with largernumbers of households througheconomies of scale. The objectives are:

To quantify potential savings bycarrying out a comprehensivedoorstep questionnaire, similar to anEnergy Performance Certificate, incorporating ecological footprintquestions specific to each

participating community for 90% ofall households in the period March -August 2010 and provide arepresentative sample of houseswith smart meters for a two weekperiod between March and August2010.To provide insulation solutions for50% of all residential households inthe 8 communities before the winter2010. It should be noted that only fullytrained and qualified people will beused for the surveys. Each Household Report will consistof an energy efficiency report, energy efficiency advice and anindication of what their energy cost, consumption and emissions arebefore and after insulationmeasures. 50% of households are expected tobenefit from either loft and/or cavitywall insulation. 10% of thesehouseholds are likely to receive bothmeasures. Approximately one third of homes inScotland are known as hard to treat, having solid or timber frame wallsand rooms in the roof makingtraditional low cost insulationmeasures impossible to install.Householders will be given theopportunity to obtain quotes forsolid wall insulation and insulation ofrooms in the roof. Through interim

reporting for the project andworking with partner organisations, the team will investigate furtheroptions where there is a very highpercentage of hard to reach homesas may be the case in Strachur. Micro-renewable devices may beappropriate. Working with theESSacs, householders will besupported to identify appropriatetechnologies and apply for grantassistance to install measures.

Final ReportOnce all measures are installed andhousehold reports issued a finalreport will be prepared summarisingdata from all surveyed properties. The project will have immediatebenefit to individual householdersand will provide each communitywith useful information to measureprogress towards their communitycarbon reduction targets. Averageannual fuel bill savings forhousehold in receipt of insulationmeasures and using low energy lightbulbs were estimated at £192(based on Oct 1997 prices for arural community) by the EnergyAgency.Individual houses will be contactedby letter as soon as the project getsunder-way.

Frost Report

Odd Goings OnI am writing this in mid January justas we are recovering from the bigfreeze. It was obviously a bad timefor many species of wildlife. Owlsand kestrels would have found ithard to find their usual prey of smallmammals as the voles and micehave been travelling underground, living in burrows in the snow. I didnote an R.S.P.B. report that saidospreys would be unable to catchfish in iced-over lochs - they areway ahead of you, sunshine - theyall migrated to Africa months ago! Scavengers such as buzzards, eaglesand ravens did not come off toobadly as the weather causedfatalities amongst deer and sheep. It's a good thing for them that thelegislation banning the leaving ofgrallochs and carcasses on the hillhas not gone through. Maybe theyhad been lobbying S.M.P.s. Theravens are beginning to get theirnests ready at the moment. I have seen a few unusual sightsduring the bad weather. Whilestalking in deep snow at about 1500to 2000 feet we came upon a smallflock of a dozen or so bullfinches. Itis not usual to see them at suchheights, as they prefer woodland sowhy they were there goodnessknows, as there seemed to be nofood. There was an eagle sitting ona 'passing place' sign just above thewoodland on the Ben Lawers roadand one on a low tree branch inGlen Lochay. At Glen Falloch my

son saw an eagle land near a foxeating a sheep carcase, they had abit of a 'carry on', no sooner had thefox turned his back to carry oneating than another eagle landed -so the three of them had a bit of a'set to' before Mr. Fox decided thathis lunch was of most importance. He also shot a fox on the ice onenight and, on going to retrieve itnext morning, found that most of ithad been eaten - by another fox asthe prints in the snow proved. Asimilar happening was reported inEngland but this time the tracksrevealed that a badger had had afoxy sandwich. We have managed to get out to feedthe deer and they are alwayshanging around waiting for blocksand hay to be replenished. It is alsoa good way to get to know many ofthe beasts that are around. In

Kintyre they will be looking verycarefully as a recent study showedthat 40% of animals were crossedred and sika. This produces smallerred-like female hybrids and largersika-like hybrid males and females. The writer in the 'Oban Times' saysthat they will not be monarchs butmongrels of the glen. It is beingpredicted that there will be a lowcalving rate this coming summer -well below the average of about35%.With all this bitter cold it has atleast given us a break in the globalwarming warning. I wonder whathas caused the latest meteorologicaldisaster - the leaving of 'Heather theWeather'. It will never be the sameagain - although wee Gail did haveArdeonaig on her map the otherevening - fame at last!

"Here lie the bones of DorothyBright. She put out her left handand turned to the right!"This lady had fairly obviously beenriding a bike or motorcycle, butnowadays would also have come togrief had she indicated incorrectlyon the trafficator, no matter whichtype of vehicle she was operating.Among the many dials, knobs andswitches that grace the dashboardof modern cars and lorries, emulating the instrument panels ofjet planes, can be a fairly recentinnovation, i.e., a temperaturegauge, which can alert the driver tothe possibility of black ice, aninsidious hazard which can occur atany time from October to March.During January 2010, so far, conditions have dictated thatground temperatures have hoveredfrom very little above to manydegrees below the freezing point, thereby rendering the carthermometer still interesting butsomewhat redundant. At time of writing (13th January)the present cold spell, which beganon 20th December, is easingsomewhat with rain and a slow

thaw. It is, however, here on LochTayside, the longest spell of lyingsnow since January/February 1984,when a succession of blizzards gavea level covering of 24 inches and on20th January a low of -9ºC (16ºF)air temperature and -15ºC (5ºF)ground temperature. On 29thDecember 2009 these figures werealmost exactly replicated and, dueto the large body of water adjacent, are just about as low as it can getat Ardtalnaig. The subsequentSpring of 1984 was mainlyunsettled with fairly brief spells ofsnow or sleet and, until the firstweek of April, dry interludes werealmost non-existent. The Summerof that year was however beyondreproach! In the last issue of Killin News, Idrew attention to some of thebetter known named winds of theGlobe, however one very importantair movement was omitted; the JetStream which can exert muchinfluence on our weather conditionsin the British Isles. This particularjet stream - there are several -which concerns us is the Polar jet

stream which flows from west toeast at speeds of up to 400m.p.h.in the Troposphere, some 6 to 10miles above the Earth's surface. Itis "a movable feast" in that it issomewhat erratic in its course.Incidentally the effect of this jetstream is connected to the constantplume of ice crystals blown fromthe crest of Mt. Everest 29,028feet, coinciding with jet streamlevels.Normally this air flow seems to beconnected with the meeting point ofthe North Atlantic Drift, whichoriginates in the Gulf Stream, andthe cold Labrador Current, thecollision of these warm and coldmasses being the power house ofthe many Atlantic weather systemswhich seem to follow the course ofthe Jet Stream. The latter, forvarious reasons, can alter courseand travel further south in Summerthan is usual, thereby plaguingthese islands with poor or non-existent Summers such as 2007, 8and 9.

There is a part of most curlers which hankers back to the golden age ofoutdoor ice. The event of the year, or the decade, then was the Bonspiel orGrand Match, when hundreds of curlers would converge on the Lake ofMenteith for a great competition, the North of Scotland against the South. Thehopes were high this year that once again the roar of the stones would beheard, but alas, between the dreaded health and safety boffins and the lastminute thaw, it was not to be. So then for another year the curlers put awaytheir stones with heavy hearts. But here in Killin we have one of the last remaining outdoor ponds inPerthshire, and the keen keen curlers took full advantage of their little gem. After many hours of clearing snow and scraping ice, two rinks were available. They were duly marked out and the fun began.

From people of the ages of eighty down to eight, the pond once again rangwith the sounds of outdoor curling. The joy to see the young generationparticipating in a rare event nowadays was heaven itself. The older curlers ofcourse had with them the requisite hip flask full of …… the spirit of the game! This is an essential part of outdoor curling since it keeps the cold out!Six nights and the odd afternoon of curling were enjoyed on the ‘Acharn Pond’before the ice gave up. It was a most magnificent start to the New Year andindeed the new decade. Our thanks are extended to all who took part in whatever capacity during thistime. A special mention to Kevin Fitzgerald for his snow clearing expertise.

nlarich NurseryI thought your readers may beinterested in reading a response Ihad from a letter I submitted to theOban Times in December, regardingthe Hudson on Ben Lui. Neil Owen, aretired policeman and director of theOban Museum recounts aconversation he overheard when hewas on a police training course inGlasgow in 1993. Anotherpoliceman, apparently a keen Munroclimber had camped on Ben Lui onthe shoulder, below the summit. There was an appreciable covering ofsnow during the night. About two inthe morning he heard someonecalling for help and went out to see ifhe could see anything, but foundnothing. Next morning he found thatbelow him in the gully was anaircraft's wing sticking out of thesnow (this was the Hudson). Neil has visited the site severaltimes, and had heard some" localgossip" that the rear gunner hadsurvived the initial impact. As therehad been no explosion (I believe theHudson was low on fuel), the gunnerwho had a broken leg wrappedhimself in his parachute to try & keepwarm. He died at some point in thenext 48 hours.I cannot corroborate this story, but

there is some evidence that maysupport it.The Hudson crashed at 2240 hourson 15th April but the recovery partydid not reach the crash site until18th April. The police report states that one ofthe crew Sgt Fred Lown wasrecovered on the 18th April, butwould need salvage assistance torecover the other TWO bodies (theHudson had a crew of four). So itcould be that the rear gunner haddragged himself away from thewreckage, and was not spotted untilthe 23 April when the police reportstates that the remaining THREEcrew members were recovered. The death records of Sgt Wilf Rooksstate that apart from other injurieshe had two broken legs.It is an interesting, but sad, accountof what may have been the lastmoments of one of the crew of theHudson.Should any readers have anymemories that would support any ofthe above I would be reallyinterested to hear from them.

Peter Waugh (Tay Fitness) and I aredoing Ironman Lanzarote in May2010. As if Ironman wasn't enoughof a challenge, Lanzarote is alwaysdescribed as the toughest course inthe world! It's the 'holy grail' of theworld's Ironman courses. The eventcomprises a 3.8k swim in the sea, followed by a 180k cycle with nearly3000m of climbing and then to finishwith a marathon (42k) run - all backto back in the heat and wind ofLanzarote! Why? Well at this point we aren'ttoo sure really - it seemed like agood idea at the time of enteringand certainly I wanted to do itbefore I got too old! Maybe, though,it's the satisfaction of crossing thatfinishing line and getting thefinishers medal and T-shirt thatmade us do it! Or alternatively, itmay be the feeling of being that fitand healthy! However mad we may be, we areaiming to raise funds for worthyvillage causes, namely the KillinMountain Rescue, the Falls ofDochart Retirement Home and theKillin and Ardeonaig Parish ChurchFunds. Every penny we collect willgo to the charities as we arecovering 100% of the costs involvedwith doing the event ourselves. Wehave set up an account at Killin PostOffice, thanks to Paul, or there is acollection tin at The Real Food Cafe,Tyndrum. Any and all support youcan give these charities orencouragement you can offer us inour quest will all be very, very muchappreciated. Thank you.

Are We Mad?The community involvement phaseof the Forth Valley OrchardRegeneration Initiative is nowunderway. If you own or manageorchards, have one or two trees inyour garden, or know of a few treeson public land, we would love tohear from you! We are mapping theorchards and fruit trees of ForthValley (Clacks, Falkirk & Stirlingareas) and are looking forinformation on their location, type, age, condition, current use etc, whether there is interest in creatingand managing orchards, maintainingexisting trees, or using the fruit. Wewould also like to know if therewould be interest in forming a groupto further develop orchards in ForthValley. This information will allow usto see how valued orchards are byboth their owners and the widercommunity, and whether they haveany value for wildlife, the localeconomy and the landscape. Weaim to work with a range of partnersin a second stage of the initiative todevelop orchards on a morepractical level. You can contribute information bycompleting the survey onwww.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=nvKyZJ1EK1tf_2ba0h_2bAVxww_3d_3dYou can do the survey again foreach orchard or collection of trees

Emily’s Two Worlds

11 year old Emily Crow from theSmiddy, Killin, is through the semi-finals of the SKY 1 Programme 'Gotto Dance’. From over 10,000original competitors, she wonthrough to the final 100 and theninto the last 18 shown on theprogramme. The final six willcompete on 14th February. Onlytwo acts from Scotland got into thesemi-finals and amazingly Emily'scousin, Jay Carr, is in the other act,The Box. A proud grandmother isclaiming all the credit! Life for the

Crow family at the moment is hectic -constant phone calls fromchoreographers, costume designers, promotions people, make up artistsand programme producers. All thefamily - and Killin - are being filmedand clips will be used in theprogrammes. Emily began dancing at the age of 2and started competing at 5. Afteralso going to gymnastics and balletclasses, she now specialises infreestyle dancing and worksincredibly hard at it. Each tinymovement and position must beperfected. Twice a week after schoolshe travels to Paisley or Falkirk forlessons and then there is practiceFriday night and all day in Paisley.Saturday night often involvestravelling to a distant location for aSunday competition, then back homeSunday night. All this could be verytiring but she's used to it and is verygood at sleeping while travelling. How will Emily feel if she loses? Shehas been competing for many yearsat top competitions and is used toboth winning and losing so, whateverthe result, she will cope with it. Asusual she will do her best and, in thiscase, hope the public votes for her.It would be a great opportunityshould she win it as her ambition is

to go on to stage school and developnot only her freestyle dancing butalso her singing and piano playing. Emily lives in two separate worlds -the world of dancing and the normallife of home and school. At homeshe has the normal life of anyschoolchild in Killin. The family isvery grateful for all the supportEmily has received from friends, teachers and local people and we allwish her good luck for Valentine'sDay. MM

St Fillan’s ChurchSt Fillan's Church (the tintabernacle) is in need ofsubstantial repairs. The roofleaks in several areas. Otherparts of the building needreplacement or repair ofdefective timbers. The churchhas two small congregations ofregular worshippers;Episcopalians (Anglicans) in themorning and Roman Catholics inthe afternoon. The church is ofgreat importance to both groupsbut neither can draw on the sortof funds necessary to allow thework to go ahead. TheEpiscopalians, as the owners ofthe building, do have a smallfund for repairs but it falls wellshort of the estimate given bythe surveyor; they haveengaged a project manager tosource grants to help with thecost and oversee the work. TheNational Park has generouslyallocated a substantial amountwhich covers the surveying andthe project manager's fee. Wenow wait to hear if other grantawarding bodies will lookfavourably on our applications. The church has been a landmarkin the village for more than 120years. It was built as a place ofworship for shooting parties thatcame to Killin for the 'season' inthe late eighteen hundreds andwas known affectionately as theGrouse Church. Visiting clergywere expected to take theservices, today there is a priestin charge. St Fillans has become a regularplace of worship for residents ofKillin, Crianlarich and Tyndrumand provides services forholiday makers who addconsiderably to the congregationin the summer months. GA

When he was not yet four years old,Itzhak Perlman was stricken by polioand lost the use of his legs. However he compensated for thatloss by devoting himself to hisviolin. In the years that followed,he delighted the world with hismusic. He lost the use of his legsbut his music gave him wings andhe became an inspiring example ofovercoming a handicap.William Booth, the founder of theSalvation Army, is another exampleof someone who suffered the loss ofa particular ability but developedother capacities for service. Whenhe discovered that he was goingblind, Booth did not surrender todespair. With a positivedetermination, he told his friendsthat he had served Christ while hecould see and he would do hisutmost to serve the Lord even whenhe was blind. Then there is Helen Keller, anAmerican girl, who became deaf, dumb and blind at the early age of

nineteen months yet lived one of themost useful lives of her generation.Once when Helen was addressingpeople who could see and hear, shesaid "Use your eyes as if you wouldbe one day stricken blind. Apply thesame method to your senses.Listen to the music of voices, thesongs of birds, the mighty strains ofan orchestra as if you would bestricken deaf tomorrow. Touch eachobject as though tomorrow yoursense of touch would fail. Smell theperfume of the flowers, taste withrelish each morsel, as if tomorrowyou would never smell, glory in allthe facets of pleasure and beautywhich the world reveals".The Lord says "My grace is sufficientfor you, for My strength is madeperfect in weakness".Recall these handicapped heroeswho demonstrate that circumstanceswhich imprison us cannot limit God'swork through us.

The New Yearfinds us halfway through our2010programme andtheme of the

honey bee: its nature, life cycle, and interaction with theenvironment and humans. Anyoneinterested in this subject or inlearning something about herbs canjoin us for these discussions, as allour meetings are open to thegeneral public, and usually takeplace in the Aberfeldy Town Hall, monthly on Wednesdays. The aimof our organization is to encouragethe wider use of herbs byexchanging knowledge and ideas infriendship. An October introduction to thehoney bee by Margaret Lear ofBankfoot gave us understanding andnew meaning to the term 'hive ofactivity'. Gillean Ford of InvertayGuest House, beekeeper andspeaker at our January 20thmeeting provided us with manyuseful tips and delicious recipesusing local and Dunkeld honey, andalso some insight into the bacterialand mite dangers which these smallindustrious bee workers face. Our

next meeting February 17th willprovide us with information anduses for Royal Jelly. This will bepresented by Sylvana Ginella ofKillin. The Killin Fireworks nearly didn't happen this year and wasonly saved by a last-minute intervention. Holding afireworks event has become much more expensive in recentyears due to the need for training, qualifications, insuranceand Health and Safety requirements. The money, over£3,000, is raised by individual donations, pledges, proceedsfrom the Fireworks Party and donations from localbusinesses. If the community wants it to go ahead nextyear there will need to be more local commitment. The fireworks bring the local community and visitorstogether and provide a remarkable spectacle with theDochart Bridge, the falls and the Old Mill as a backdrop. The water and snow reflect the colours and lights framed bytrees and rocks in a unique setting. Visitors are attractedto spend New Year in Killin and it would be a sad loss if itwere not to continue. We would like to thank those involved in the planning, fundraising, construction, and management of the display inparticular Charlie Grant for taking on the organising roleand all involved in safety support. Thank you all who gavegenerously to support the event as individuals or asbusinesses. A special thank you to the Killin Hotel whomade up the shortfall and enabled the event to proceed.

Would you like a new interest for afew hours this summer and a chanceto meet interesting people? As thenew Property Secretary for the localNational Trust for Scotland office atLynedoch, part of my job is co-ordinating the work at MoirlanichLonghouse. For those relatively new to the areawho don't know, MoirlanichLonghouse is a short walk, north-west from Killin, half a mile up theGlen Lochay Road. It is a raresurviving example of a ScottishLonghouse, dating back to the mid19th Century; a practical homewhich was heated by a 'hinging lum'in the centre and by housinglivestock in the byre end - a practicewe may look at with newappreciation, given our recenttemperatures. The building was home to theRobertson family and was occupieduntil 1968. It then lay empty untilthe National Trust for Scotland wasable to purchase it with a donationin memory of the late Sheriff Prain, from his family. The National Trustfor Scotland is attempting toconserve the early twentieth centuryfeatures of the building such as the

Moirlanich Longhousemany layers of wallpaper used todecorate and insulate the walls. This is no easy task given theclimate.Killin Heritage Society, and manyothers, provide volunteer support toenable the building to be opened tothe public over the summer seasonand we are always in need of newvolunteers (of any age!) to fill therota. The building is open on EasterSunday and then twice a week fromMay to September, on Wednesdaysand Sundays, from 2.00-5.00 p.m.There are always two volunteersworking each day, greeting visitors,

taking admissions charges andexplaining the artefacts on display -training is provided and I will beproviding ongoing support. Thehouse provides a fantastic insightinto past centuries of agricultural lifewith many original everyday objectson display, as well as exciting findssuch as old Sunday Best clothingthat was stuffed in the roof space. If you would like to become a newvolunteer, or just find out moreabout what it entails, please contactme, Eleanor Murray, on 820988 orcall in at the NTS office (Lyndoch)or contact Linda Frost, on 820562

Happy New Year KillinIt was our very great pleasure oncemore to attend The Killin Gamesearlier this year. This is my thirdvisit - that is if you count '02 whenit was rained out - and by far themost memorable. Even though thevenue has its challenges, it is amagnificent place to hold suchevents. Killin should be proud of it. I was quoted in a worldwidepublication as saying "When I crossThe Falls of Dochart, I feel I havereturned home". As you may know, our clan, the Macnabs, originate inthe area and even though we havescattered over the world, this is ourhome. Although Killin is a very beautifulplace and holds fond memories forus all, the best part of it is thepeople. Any time I have had thegood fortune to visit, I have been

Farewell for nowIt is with some regret and a tear inmy eye that I write this note to sayfarewell for now to the good folk ofKillin and Strathfillan. Since theinception of the National Park I havehad the pleasure of working as aCountryside Ranger representingthe communities in the north of theNational Park. Unfortunately myjob and remit has changed a lotduring the last year and rather thanstay and become frustrated I havedecided it is time to move on.I will take with me many happymemories from the time I spentworking in this stunning landscape.I would like to thank all thosepersons who made my job so mucheasier. There are too many personsto mention by name but I must givea special thank you to the dedicatedmembers of EAK (EnvironmentalAction Killin), the StrathfillanCommunity Development Trust, thelandowners in the north of theNational Park, all those persons whohelped to establish and runClanscape and the staff andstudents from Killin and CrianlarichPrimary School.I am not sure what the future holds

for me but whilst I am in betweenjobs I am going to use theopportunity to spend the winter onthe beautiful island of Dominica.Twenty years ago I did a VSO(Voluntary Service Overseas)placement on the island where Ispent four years acting as head ofdepartment in a local High School.Since then I have been returning ona regular basis and in partnershipwith a local family we have beenbuilding a house. The project isalmost complete and we hope torent out the upstairs apartment.Maybe Hummingbird Heights will beready to go by Easter 2010!?When you have enjoyed working inan area as much as I have it isalways really sad to leave. I amsure that thoughts of Breadalbaneand especially Killin and Strathfillanwill stay with me for a long time. Times is hard in Barrabut fortunately a littlewelcome cash is on itsway to Killin. The

National Park Community GrantScheme was set up to helpcommunity groups with the cost ofboth administration and capitalprojects and sought to reward thosegroups whose projects contributedtowards any of the Park's statutoryaims the fourth of which is topromote the social and economicwellbeing of the Park's communities. This year a total of £35,000 wasdistributed to communitiesthroughout the National Park. Killinand Ardeonaig Community Trust(KAT) applied for a grant to helpwith the cost of administering whatis becoming quite a complex trustand happily has been awarded£1,500.Whilst on Grants I would mentionthat a new officer (Part-time) is nowin place for the Killin ConservationArea Repairs Scheme. She is KarenHinds and can be contacted at ParkHQ on 01389 727744.Everyone will be aware that PublicFinances over the next couple ofyears will be extremely tight andconsequently where funding is notalready in place there is likely to be

some difficulties. Those difficultiesare likely to be more pronouncedwhere a project may be spread overa number of years. An example ofthis would be a project to eradicatean invasive species such asJapanese Knotweed. And the reasonis quite simply that no-one will beable to guarantee the availability offunds for more than one year. The Final Draft Local Plan wasapproved by the Park Board on 15thDecember and will proceed to a sixweek public consultation in February. At the end of the consultation periodthe Draft Plan and any objectionsthereto received as a result of theconsultation will be forwarded to theReporter for review. When submitting the Draft Plan tothe Reporter the Park Authority hasalso to show what action the ParkAuthority has taken to address theobjections. It is for the Reporter tosubmit the Draft Plan with hisrecommendations to the Minister. He may, prior to submitting theReport to the Minister, seek a PublicEnquiry if he deems that anyobjections have not beensatisfactorily dealt with by the ParkAuthority and any objection is of amajor nature. Since the ParkAuthority has engaged extensively

with the Park communities inpreparing the Draft Plan and to dateno major objections have beenraised I am hopeful that theReporter will be able to forward thePlan without much delay. If that isthe case we should be able to haveour own National Park LocalDevelopment Plan in place in lateautumn this year. Owen McKee

Many of the missing road markings in Killin mentioned in the last issuewere replaced in December but the ones at the Manse Road end of StewartRoad are still missing, This means there is still nothing to indicate whichroad has priority and drivers on both tend to think that they have - adangerous situation. After the recent bad weather, however, not only theroad markings but the roads in Killin too have deteriorated badly. Both thebridges have badly cracked surfaces and that must surely mean water isgoing into the main fabric underneath which cannot be good. Thepavements in Main Street, 'resurfaced' to questionable standards by a man,two boys and a dog from Birmingham over several weeks last autumn -(summer?) are crumbling more with each day. Killin is not alone insuffering damage and is certainly not likely to be top priority on theCouncil's repair list. We can only hope that repairs are made before moremajor work is needed on the bridges. MM
