Each bedroom has its own private exterior space facing the views of the valley to the west with large overhangs for rain and heat protection.

The eucalyptus screen wraps around the uphill side of the house providing a sense of enclosure and privacy for its residents and also a connection to more traditional ways of building.

  • The success of the project meant that it would be a foundation for the success of Rwanda Village (RVE) housing project in Rwinkwavu area.

As the bigger project that RVE is having in the Eastern province is to construct affordable housing project, the same technique (using sand bags and compressed earth blocks) that would be successful in the construction of the guard house, would be applied to the housing project of RVE.

  • I was one of the team that supervised the construction progress. Working with the local labor required specific trainings for the work to be successful.

Building with ferro-cement also was a new innovation in Rwinkwavu and this made us to stick around throughout the construction progress.

House A is meant to be constructed in earth bags and its roof is meant to be constructed in ferro-cement.

It has got an inner court yard that is meant to offer some privacy of a person in the working area (traditionally called igikari).

The round shape of the building was adopted from the traditional thatched houses and the idea was got from the community charrette that was carried out in 2013 community meetings.

The screening wall of the interior is made of Eucalyptus wood which makes the projects goal to be successful because the intention of the project is to use construction materials which are locally available.

The inner courtyard is meant to be having an open roof which helps the space to be having no problem of lighting.

After the1994 genocide , the government of Rwanda has been conserving the sites that were intensely affected by the genocide.

Its for this reason that as a company, we were working on the genocide memorial of Ntarama and the main idea was to design the project that conserves the historical potentials of the site.

The space has been hosting a diversity of event like Tedex presentation, casting movies, art exhibitions, Slide Luck presentation and other social interaction events. But the challenge that the client was facing is that the space was not having a roof.

  • The objective for the final phase of the workshop was to build on the understanding of the house and the settlement in the context of Rwandas future demographic change and projected models of densification (imudugudu) to test some potential alternate hybrid typologies on a site on the northern slope of Kacyiru hill in Kigali.

Stretching between the ministerial hilltop, the valley and the adjacent hill where existing informal settlements have been removed to make space for high income neighborhood, the area is destined to be subject to market driven development pressures.

The challenge was to design a yoga pavilion that would be constructed out of the materials that would be found in Rwanda so as to meet the clients budget.

The main idea was to have the pavilion blending in the nature by having flowers and grass grow even on top of the roof hence minimize the heating of the pavilion.

Art cafe space is going to be constructed out of car tires. The choice of this material is due to the fact that the part of our project is slopping and these car tires make a sustainable retaining wall.

This Second phase of the project has the outdoor amphitheater where people sit and have a total view to the courtyard area. The car tires are strong enough to resist for erosion, they protect the soil by providing these interesting seats.
