CVCC’s Adult Education EKG Technician program recently visited the Cardiac Monitoring Unit (CMU) at the Cleveland Clinic in Beachwood for job shadowing and career placement. This trip integrated curriculum that helps students foster a better idea of the responsibilities of a Cardiac Monitoring Technician. The CMU is divided into sections, where they had employees monitoring up to 30 patients at once. The students, accompanied by instructor Andrew Bell learned about software that is currently being developed to have high-risk patient heart rhythms "shake" on the computer screen to stand out against patients that would be considered to have normal heart rhythms. This software, in place with human interpretation will alert staff as to which patients would be at risk for cardiac dysrhythmias (irregularities) or requiring urgent treatment. After learning that high risk patients have protocols to follow, inclusion of software that helps interpret heart rhythms and observing team work, the students gained confidence and felt at ease with the job responsibilities. After the classes visit to the CMU, additional job shadowing was offered and our current students will be following up to make another trip to learn more about job placements and the new, exciting monitoring techniques. The Adult Education EKG Technician program at CVCC is a comprehensive 75 clock hour program that prepares students to become a Certified EKG Technician. Students receive their Basic Life Support certifications as part of the training as well as have the opportunity to schedule additional individual job shadowing sessions at the CMU if they are interested.
