There will be times in life when you find yourself facing a trou-bling situation or enduring a painful injustice. As the saying goes, life isn’t fair. At these times, we must remember to take our eyes offof others and off of ourselves, and turn our eyes upon Jesus.

Too many times, we look only at the problem or circumstanceand we don’t find out what God says concerning our situation. TheWord of God says, “What is impossible with men is possible withGod” (Luke 18:27 NIV). When it looks like you’re doomed, when itlooks like it’s all over for you, look up! That’s where your helpcomes from.

The Bible gives us clues as to why we may find ourselves inhard times and also keys on how to move beyond the negative sit-uations and injustices of life. Psalm 73 says, “But as for me, my feethad almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold. For I envied thearrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked” (vv. 2,3 NIV).The psalmist focused his attention on other people. Those who werewicked seemed to have everything and he, the righteous, seemedto have nothing. When he began to envy others, he nearly lost hisfoothold in life.

We must take our eyes off of other people. We have to guard against blaming others for what’s going

wrong in our life. Other people aren’t responsible for our situation. Our struggle is not with flesh and blood (Eph. 6:12). Our battle isa spiritual battle that is fought through prayer and a strong beliefin God’s Word.

We must also guard against comparing ourselves with otherswhen we’re going through a hard time. Our success in life doesnot come from what other people do. Our success comes fromwhat we do!

We cannot blame others, compare ourselves with others, orjudge others. We must learn to take personal responsibility, com-pare ourselves only to the Word, and judge only ourselves accord-ing to what the Bible says.

However, there is a trap here that we must avoid. While manypeople have a habit of blaming others, some Christians have ahabit of blaming themselves to the point where their attention istotally focused on themselves!

We must take our eyes off of ourselves. If you focus on yourself and insist on finding something wrong

with yourself, the devil will accommodate you. He will magnifyyour flaws, failures, and past sins.

I’m not saying we should ignore our mistakes or pretend thatour flaws don’t exist. I’m saying that our attention shouldn’t be onourselves. Our attention should be focused on God!

Maybe you have made a mistake or fallen short in an area. ButGod can turn it around. He is the God of second chances! If you’vemade a mistake, God is still there for you if you will call on Him.God wants to bring a positive solution to every problem in yourlife.

We must keep our eyes on God. It’s a mistake to look at others and make comparisons. It’s a

mistake to look at ourselves and beat ourselves up for what’s goingon. The real success, the real victory, comes when we keep ourattention turned upward and on God.

If you’re going to be victorious in this life, you have to continu-ally keep your eyes on God. You can’t look at the circumstances, because the circumstances will tell you you’re a failure, you’ll nevermake it, it’s all over, and you should throw in the towel.

But if you’ll keep your eyes on God and listen to His Word, Hewill say to you, “Keep on going, My child. Joy comes in the morn-ing. Having done all to stand, keep standing. Your answer is onthe way.”

The final outcome is not determined by what we see in the nat-ural. The final outcome is determined by the supernatural. What-ever you may be going through is temporary. But the Word ofGod will never pass away. If you’re rooted and grounded in God’sWord, you will be a success, because God’s Word never fails.

No matter how bad it looks, how big it looks, or how wrong itseems — God is bigger! Keep on climbing. Keep on putting onefoot in front of the other, and you will find the success and victoryyou have been looking for. As the old song says, “Turn your eyesupon Jesus; look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earthwill grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.”

I encourage you this month to take your eyes off of the peoplearound you and off of yourself and all that you are going through, and instead, turn your eyes upon Jesus. Focus your attention onwhat the Word says, and watch the Almighty God do the impossi-ble in your life!

If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, HOW MUCH MORE SHALL YOUR FATHER WHICH

As a parent, if you tell yourchildren that you’re goingto give them a gift, andthey come to you later beg-ging for what you’ve

already promised them, you might beupset with them. By their actions, theywould be saying, “We know you saidyou’d do it, but we don’t believe youwill!” That’s basically what we do toJesus our Healer when we conclude ourprayers for healing with the statement,“If it be Thy will.” God has already givenHis Word to us about healing: “WithJesus’ stripes, we were healed!” (1 Peter2:24).

Instead of basing our prayers forhealing on the way Jesus prayed in theGarden of Gethsemane, “If it be Thywill,” why not base our prayers for heal-ing on the way Jesus prayed for healing?Actually, if you’ll notice how Jesus min-istered to sick people in His earthly min-istry, you’ll find that most of the time,He didn’t even pray for their healing; Hejust spoke words to that effect, He said, inessence, “Be healed!” and the sick werehealed. Jesus did pray, however, whenHe raised Lazarus from the dead. Jesussaid, “. . . Father, I thank thee THATTHOU HAST HEARD ME” (John 11:41).Then Jesus commanded, “. . . Lazarus,COME FORTH” (v. 43). And if you’ll

study the different accounts of healingin the four Gospels, you’ll notice thatJesus never refused anyone who cameto Him to receive healing. Not one timewill you find Jesus praying to God,“Father, heal this person if it be Thywill.” Jesus never prayed that waybecause He already knew God’s will onthe subject of healing!

Of course, opponents of divine heal-ing always cite cases of sick people whowere prayed for but didn’t receive theirhealing. When people aren’t healed, many automatically conclude, “It mustbe God’s will that I’m sick.” But if that’strue, then why do they go to the doctorfor medicine so they can get well and getout of the will of God! If it’s not God’swill to heal — if it’s God’s will for Hispeople to be sick — then according tothat kind of thinking, sick peopleshouldn’t do things in the natural to bewell. And well people should pray to besick!

You might say, “That sounds ridicu-lous!” Yes, it certainly does! But I said itto help you see the absurdity of some ofthe teachings we hear today which try toprove that divine healing is not God’s willfor us, or that healing is not for us today.

Healing is God’s will because God’sWord says it is, and it is impossible forGod to lie (Num. 23:19). It is God’s will

for us to be well, whole, happy, andblessed because the Bible says thatGod is our Heavenly Father, and as afather, He loves us and wants only thebest for us.

MATTHEW 7:7-117 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall beopened unto you:8 For every one that asketh receiveth;and he that seeketh findeth; and to himthat knocketh it shall be opened.

9 Or what man is there of you, whom ifhis son ask bread, will he give him astone?10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him aserpent?11 If ye then, being evil [or natural], knowhow to give good gifts unto your chil-dren, HOW MUCH MORE SHALL YOURFATHER WHICH IS IN HEAVEN GIVEGOOD THINGS TO THEM THAT ASKHIM?

Many people believe that Godafflicts people with sickness and dis-ease in order to discipline them or toteach them a lesson. But how many ofyou who are parents would disciplineyour children by making them sick? Ifyou could, would you get some cancerand inject it into your children and tellthem, “Now, I’m going to teach you afew things”? Of course not! Besides, ifyou were to do that, I guarantee, youwould spend quite a few years lockedup behind bars! Well, the Bible says ifnatural parents know how to give goodgifts to their children, how much moredoes God our Heavenly Father knowhow to give good gifts to His children!Yet our Heavenly Father is accused ofgiving His children cancer, tuberculo-sis, and every other kind of maladyand sickness you can think of. Thatkind of reasoning doesn’t even makesense!

JAMES 1:1717 Every GOOD GIFT and every PER-FECT GIFT is from above, and comethdown FROM THE FATHER of lights, with whom is no variableness, neithershadow of turning.

We can readily see from this scrip-ture that it is God Who has providedthe many ways for us to be helped, healed, and blessed in this naturalrealm in which we live. God doesn’tobject to people obtaining healingthough natural means — through med-ical science, for example. But on theother hand, His Word clearly statesthat He has also provided the meanswhereby His people can receive divinehealing! God is the author of bothmeans of obtaining healing.

God has provided the avenue ofmedical science through whichmankind can receive help and healingfor the physical body. We know thisbecause of James 1:17 which says thatevery good gift and every perfect gift isfrom God above. And doctors and medi-cal science are certainly a benefit tomankind. So it is God who establishedthe means whereby mankind can behelped through medical science.

Looking in the Old Testament, wealso need to realize that it was God’sidea, not man’s, to establish a statuteof divine healing for His people. It wasthen that God revealed Himself as The

Great Physician — as JehovahRapha — “The Lord that healeth.”

EXODUS 15:22-2622 So Moses brought Israel from the Redsea, and they went out into the wilder-ness of Shur; and they went three daysinto the wilderness, and found no water.23 And when they came to Marah, theycould not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the nameof it was called Marah.24 And the people murmured againstMoses, saying, What shall we drink?

25 And he cried unto the Lord; and theLord shewed him a tree, which when hehad cast into the waters, the waterswere made sweet: there he made forthem a statute and an ordinance, andthere he proved them,26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hear-ken to the voice of the Lord thy God . . . Iwill put [permit] none of these diseasesupon thee, which I have brought uponthe Egyptians: for I AM THE LORDTHAT HEALETH THEE.

The Israelites were making theirexodus out of Egypt where they hadbeen in bondage to the cruel slavery ofPharaoh and the Egyptians. They wereon their way to the Promised Land, and on their journey, they venturedinto the wilderness of Shur andsojourned there for three days withoutany water. Then when they came toMarah and found water, they couldn’tdrink it because it was bitter. Mosescried to the Lord, and the Lord showedhim a tree and told him to cast it intothe water. When the tree was dippedinto the water, the water became sweetso the children of Israel could drink it(Exod. 15:25).

The tree Moses cast into the watersis a semblance, or a type and shadow,of the tree that Jesus was to die on —the Cross of Calvary. In many places inthe Bible, water is representative ofpeople. Isn’t it interesting that in thesame way the tree was dipped into the

waters at Marah and used to heal thewaters, Jesus Christ, Who died on atree and rose again from the dead, was“dipped into the waters” of humanity,so to speak, to obtain our healing andredemption!

EXODUS 15:2626 . . . If thou wilt diligently hearken tothe voice of the Lord thy God, and wiltdo that which is right in his sight, andwilt give ear to his commandments, andkeep all his statutes, I will put [permit]none of these disease upon thee, which I

have brought upon the Egyptians: for IAM THE LORD THAT HEALETH THEE.

In Exodus 15:26, God established astatute of healing for His people.Nowhere in the Bible does it say thatthis statute of divine healing has been

revoked, changed, or altered. In fact,Malachi 3:6 says, “I am the Lord, Ichange not. . . .” The Lord has neverchanged His mind or His will concern-ing the statute of divine healing.

When God makes a covenant, or anagreement with His people, He abidesby that covenant until it is revoked, stopped, or superseded by a better one. Therefore, since healing is also found inthe New Testament, we know thatGod’s healing covenant is still in forcetoday. Actually, because of the redemp-tive work of Christ, the Bible says that

we have a better covenant than theIsraelites had, established upon betterpromises (Heb. 8:6)!

“Yes, but I know someone who wasprayed for and didn’t get healed,” youhear people say. But just because some-

one fails to receive healing doesn’tmean the Word of God is false or thatGod’s covenant of healing is not in forcetoday. I don’t know why some peoplereceive their healing and others do not. However, I do know that a person mustmix faith with the Word in order toreceive healing or any blessing orpromise from God.

HEBREWS 4:22 For unto us was the gospel preached,as well as unto them: but the wordpreached did not profit them, NOT

BEING MIXED WITH FAITH in them thatheard it.

In other words, if we need healing, our faith has something to do withreceiving healing from God, becauseGod’s Word will always work when weact on it in faith. Just because someonefailed to receive healing doesn’t changethe fact that healing belongs to us andthat it’s God’s will that we walk indivine health.

Many times, we don’t understandwhy some good Christian peoplebecome sick and, instead of receivinghealing, they die and go on to be withthe Lord. We may not understand whythings happen as they do, but a lack ofunderstanding on our part does not dis-credit the Word of God. The Word says,“Believe you receive and you shall have”(Mark 11:24).

Regardless of what happens withother people and regardless of what isgoing on in our physical body, we mustcontinue to have faith in our Godbecause He is faithful. He is faithful tokeep His promises and to perform HisWord in our life. He is faithful to beJehovah Rapha — “the God Whohealeth thee.”

. . . It is God who has provided the many ways for us to be

helped, healed, and blessedin this natural realm in which we live.

God Shows Himself RealI had been praying for someone for

ome time — that God would showimself real to her. She is not a Chris-

ian and had been having terrible chestain for a month or so. An opportunityrose for me to ask if I could pray forer. She said I could, so I prayed a sim-le, quiet prayer from the Word con-erning healing for her body. Then Ihanked God for the blood of Jesus.he next day she called me and told mehat her chest quit hurting in the mid-le of the prayer. That was three weeksgo, and the pain has not returned!he and her daughter went to church!hank God for showing Himself real!

Power of Prayer and ConfessionDelivers Healthy BabyDuring my school year last year, I

learned that my sister was pregnantagain. She had already had three mis-carriages, and had begun to havethoughts of suicide. So I began to con-fess that she would have her baby andthat there would be no health problemsfor her or the child. At times mymother would call, saying my sisterwas going to lose the baby. So I wouldbegin to pray, and the next day my sis-ter would be okay again. I began toconfess that she would gain the properweight needed to carry the baby toterm, and she gained the weight, evenwhen she didn’t want to! Hallelujah! My sister was told that she would havethe baby in early September, but theywaited until October 31. My sister wasin labor for 26 hours, but she had ahealthy baby boy. He was 5 pounds, 3ounces — 3 pounds more than what thedoctors said he would be. There wereno complications for him or his mother!I never had used confession so power-fully before, but I have what I say, andnow I have the blessing of a newnephew! Praise God!

Praying Saved Grandson’s LifeI have been soaking up Dean Mar-

vin Yoder’s teaching about the Personof the Holy Spirit. Dean Yoder’sanointed teaching caused me tohunger for a more intensive walk andrelationship with the Holy Spirit. Ilearned that such a relationshipmeans responding at all times of theday and night as the Holy Spirit

prompts you to pray. Recently, theHoly Spirit spoke to me that I neededto stop what I was doing and to pray. Ihesitated for a moment, because I hadjust fixed myself a sandwich to eat. Butthe urgency in my spirit let me knowthat I should pray now!

After fervently praying in tonguesfor a while, I prayed with my under-standing to interpret (as Kenneth E.Hagin taught in his book on prayer). However, the Holy Spirit told me itwould be more than I could bear toknow it all, but He revealed the word“grandchild” to me. Immediately, Ibegan to plead the blood of Jesus andto charge the angels to protect mygrandchildren. Eventually, I sensed inmy spirit that the burden had lifted.

Shortly thereafter, my son called meto tell what had happened to Seth —my three-year-old grandchild. Seth hadbeen playing on the swing set next doorwith some of the neighborhood chil-dren. Some of the older children hadplaced a rope over the swing set with anoose on the end to swing from it withtheir legs. Not able to get his legs thathigh, Seth stood on one of the swingsand placed his head into the noose. Hethen jumped from the swing as he hadseen the other children do. The jumpand the weight of his body as he swungoutward would have broken his neck —except that the rope suddenly snappedin two, and Seth fell safely to theground! He was left with a rope burnaround his neck to testify to the mirac-ulous saving power of God.

Praise God for His Holy Spirit andfor His anointed teachers here atRHEMA!

what God’s Word teaches onthe subject?

Much emphasis has beenplaced on the practice ofanointing with oil, laying onof hands, and praying forthe sick. But there is moreto healing than anointingwith oil, just as there ismore to salvation thanprayer.

“I have prayed and prayed. Ihave been in healing meetingsall over the country and havebeen prayed for many times, butstill I am not healed. Can youhelp me?”

This plaintive appeal hasbeen heard many times by minis-ters. They pray for sick persons, but often the sick leave as theycame — not healed.

Why is it that some arehealed instantly while otherstrudge from place to place seek-ing healing, only to be disap-pointed time after time?

Why is it that some who arepillars in the church often sufferfor years while others who areless devout receive a sudden mir-acle from God?

Is God a respecter of persons(Acts 4:34)? Or have we failed inour approach to healing, lackinga complete understanding of

are simply methods, orpoints of contact. Inthemselves, they donot heal. They areavenues throughwhich we can releaseour faith in God’sWord.

Much emphasisalso has been placedon the gifts of healings(1 Cor. 12:28), whichare among the gifts ofthe Spirit mentionedin First Corinthians12:8-10: “For to one

is given by the Spirit theword of wisdom; to another the wordof knowledge by the same Spirit; Toanother faith by the same Spirit; toanother the GIFTS OF HEALING bythe same Spirit; To another the work-ing of miracles; to another prophecy;to another discerning of spirits; toanother divers kinds of tongues; toanother the interpretation oftongues.”

There will be manifestations ofthese supernatural gifts when peoplepreach them, teach them, believe inthem, and yield to the Spirit of God;but these gifts are not always inoperation.

Often new Christians are healedby such special manifestations. Thenthe next time they are sick, insteadof believing God’s Word, they expectto be healed in this same way, andthey are disappointed when they arenot.

I have found in my ministry thatsupernatural manifestations of heal-ing usually are seen either amongsinners or among denominational

Divine healing is anaccomplished fact.

It is a gift, like salvation, alreadypaid for at Calvary. Have you

people who have not heard divinehealing taught. I have seldom, if ever, seen them work for Full Gospel peo-ple.

Why? Because gifts of healingsand supernatural manifestations aregiven primarily to advertise theGospel and to gain the attention ofthose outside the Church. The believershould be healed by releasing his faithin the Word of God.

We must distinguish betweenhealings obtained through supernatu-ral gifts or manifestations and thoseobtained by exercising faith in God’sWord alone.

It also must be understood that anindividual does not operate thesesupernatural gifts; they are manifestedthrough him. I can’t make them oper-ate any time I want to; I can only stayopen for the manifestation of the Spiritof God as He wills (1 Cor. 12:11).

We should stay open for the mani-festations of the Spirit of God, but wedo not have to wait for one in order tobe healed. That’s good news, friend.

God wants us to be healed, and Hehas made provision for us to receiveand possess healing.

The gifts of healings have beenmanifested many times in my min-istry, but I cannot make them work atwill. I can’t push a button or pull alever, so to speak, and make the giftsstart working. They operate as theSPIRIT wills. Yet we are instructednot to wait for Him, since He hasalready done something about ourhealing at the Cross.

Healing belongs to us. It isn’t sim-ply a matter of prayer. It isn’t simplya matter of some spiritual gift in oper-ation. Healing belongs to us because ithas been provided for us by the LordJesus Christ.

When I tell people they don’t haveto pray to be healed, they look at me

in amazement. Many have failed toreceive healing because they havebased their faith on prayer instead ofon God’s Word. They expected prayerto do for them what God’s Word willdo for them. Prayer is successful onlywhen it is based on the promises inGod’s Word.

When people come to the altar forprayer, find out what their need is. Ifa man comes to be saved, you couldpray for him for six weeks, but untilhe acts on what God said in His Word,he will get up and go home unsaved.

Turn to God’s Word. Show himwhat the Bible says. Get him to

believe it and to act upon it. As far asGod is concerned, the man is alreadysaved. From God’s standpoint, salva-tion is already bought and paid for. Soit is not a matter of God saving him; itis a matter of his accepting the salva-tion God offers!

Similarly, it is not a matter of Godbaptizing someone with the HolySpirit; it is a matter of the personaccepting the gift of the Holy Spiritthat God offers. Likewise, it is not amatter of God healing an individual;it is a matter of the person acceptingthe gift of healing God has alreadyprovided.

Some say, “Well, I believe God isgoing to heal me sometime. I believethat in God’s own good time and inHis own way, He will do it.” That kindof thinking is out of line with the

Word of God. First Peter 2:24 says,“. . . by whose stripes ye WEREhealed.”

Notice it says, “were,” not “going tobe.” If I believe what the Bible says, then I believe that we were healed.Peter is looking back to Calvary. Iwas healed then. I accept that healingnow.

God laid on Jesus our sickness anddiseases; Jesus bore them. He was“stricken, smitten of God, andafflicted” with our diseases (Isa. 53:4).Therefore, Satan has no right to puton us what God put on Jesus.

Someone may say, “It may be thewill of God for me to be sick. God mayget more glory out of my being sickthan if I were well.”

What right, then, would God haveto put your sickness on Jesus if Hewanted you to keep bearing it? Thereis no need for both of you to bear it.Because Jesus bore it, you are free!

All of God’s blessings and provi-sions are conditional. He gave us HisWord to let us know what conditions

must be met in order for us to receivethese blessings. They won’t just fallon us automatically like ripe cherriesfall off a tree. There is a God-wardside and a man-ward side to everybattle and to every blessing. God hasHis part to play, but man also has hispart to play. Man’s part is to obey Godand to receive what He has provided.

Paul said that what happened toIsrael happened as an example for us(1 Cor. 10:11). When God led the chil-dren of Israel out of Egypt (which is atype of the world), He didn’t abandonthem in the wilderness; He had a fur-ther blessing for them. He hadanother land for them: Canaan’s land.

Canaan is a type of the baptism ofthe Holy Spirit and our rights andprivileges in Christ, which includehealing. God promised the children of

belongs to us.

Israel repeatedly that He was going togive them that land. When they finallycrossed over the Jordan River intoCanaan, God said, “Every place that thesole of your foot shall tread upon, thathave I given unto you, as I said untoMoses” (Joshua 1:3). God had said He

would give them the land, but the peo-ple had to possess it.

That’s how it is with our rights andprivileges in Christ. Healing belongs tous. God has provided it for us. But wehave to possess it. Unless we possess theprovision, we will not enjoy its benefits.

Many people are waiting for God todo something about their sickness.

They say, “If God ever heals me, thenI’m going to believe it.”

I have talked to sinners who hadthe same idea about salvation: Theywanted to leave it all up to God. Oneman said, “If God wants to save me, Hewill. I’m just waiting on God.” I

couldn’t talk him out of the notion, and, sadly, he died without God.

God’s Word says that it is God’s willto save people. He invites them tocome: “. . . And whosoever will, let himTAKE the water of life freely” (Rev.22:17). The responsibility for receivingis on man’s side.

The believer sometimes makes thesame mistake when it comes to other

things God’s Word promises. He thinkserroneously, “If God wants me to havethis, He will give it to me. If I don’t getit, He doesn’t want me to have it.” Weneed to get into the Word of God andfind out what belongs to us. If some-thing is promised to us, or if it is pro-vided for us in His Word, it is His will. All we have to do then is to possess it!

We need to settle this in our minds, because as long as we waver, we willnot receive anything. James 1:6 and 7says, “But let him ask in faith, nothingwavering. For he that wavereth is like awave of the sea driven with the windand tossed. For let not that man thinkthat he shall receive any thing of theLord.” Often we don’t receive becausewe waver.

Healing is a gift, like salvation, already paid for at Calvary. All weneed to do is accept it. All we need todo is possess the promise that is ours.As children of God, we must realizethat healing belongs to us!

PRAYER:Our Spir i tual Oxygen

14 March 2004

Each of us will face trying circumstances in life.We could never win a war without fighting somebattles. We’re going to have trials, but in ourtrials we can build our faith. We do not have tobe moved by the circumstances in our life. When

we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, He will take us fromvictory to victory.

Many people have asked my husband and I how we aremaking it now that Brother Hagin has gone to Heaven. Weare making it by resting in the Lord Jesus Christ and by theprayers of the saints. We know that people all over the worldare praying for us, and we know how powerful prayer is.

Brother Hagin was known for his strong prayer life. Iused to watch him sit quietly in my office, not saying aword to me. But I could see his lips moving, and I knew hewas praying in the Spirit. He prayed continually. And weneed to pray continually, because prayer changes things!

We have a mandate to continue on, to continue thevision the Lord gave Brother Hagin many years ago — Goteach My people faith.

Every one of us must step up a notch and do what Godhas called us to do. And the most important thing thatHe’s called each and every one of us to do is to pray!Christians are called to have a lifestyle of prayer. InEphesians 6:18 Paul says, “Pray at all times — on everyoccasion, in every season — in the Spirit, with all [mannerof] prayer and entreaty.” (The Amplified Bible.)

We often think of prayer as a means of calling uponour heavenly butler, saying, “Give me this. I need that. Iwant this.” Or we think of prayer as calling upon ourheavenly lifeguard. “Lord, I’m drowning. Help me! Saveme!” But this isn’t how we should pray. Prayer should besomething we do on a continual basis, not just when wewant something or are in trouble. In fact, it should be asautomatic to us as breathing.

Taking in oxygen is vital to our life. If we don’tcontinually receive oxygen, we will die! Imagine if on each

Sunday we said, “Okay, I’m going to take my gulp ofoxygen for this week.” It wouldn’t be long before we keeledover! We have to breathe oxygen on a daily basis — everyhour, every minute.

Prayer is our spiritual oxygen. We need it continually. But too many times, Christians pray on Sunday and thinkthey don’t need to pray any more that week. Or they willpray before meals and think they are all prayed up. Thenthey wonder why they aren’t living a victorious life — it’sbecause they only take one gulp of prayer for the week (ormonth), and that’s not enough to get by on. To be

victorious and spiritually healthy, we must live a life ofprayer.

Many Christians have been taught about prayer, andwe need to be taught how to pray. But we can be taughtand taught and taught, and if we don’t actually pray, wewon’t really learn how to pray.

I remember taking Driver’s Education in school. Backthen in Texas, taking Driver’s Education meant beingable to receive a driver’s license at age fourteen. I couldhardly wait to take those classes, because I wanted todrive so badly! I was in a hurry to drive because I wantedto be independent. I wanted to be able to do what Iwanted to do and go where I wanted to go.

During the first two weeks of the class we learned therules and regulations of driving. We learned about roadsigns, signal lights, the distance to maintain between usand the car ahead, and so forth. But did knowing the rulesqualify us to drive? No. We had yet to actually get in a carand start driving!

Prayer is our spiritual oxygen. We need it continually.

It’s important to know the rules of driving. But to becomea good driver, a person should spend more time practicingthe actual driving of a car than they do learning the rules. And it’s the same way with prayer. To be successful inprayer, we need to spend more time actually praying thanstudying the rules of prayer. But so many times, we have itbackwards. We spend all our time learning the rules ofprayer without actually praying.

Yes, it’s important that we learn how to pray. But it’seven more important that we pray. Prayer is not easy. Ittakes work, and the enemy tries to keep us from praying. Heoffers so many distractions, trying to consume our time —even with good things! Why doesn’t the devil wantChristians to pray? He knows there is power in prayer.

In driving school, the morewe practiced driving, the betterdrivers we became. And the moreyou and I pray, the better “pray-ers” we will be!

I have liked to pray since Iwas a child. But I have neverwanted to share my prayer life with other people. I havealways been very private in my prayers. I wanted to keep myprayer life between God and me. Growing up, I heard otherpeople pray such beautiful prayers. They used all sorts ofadjectives and beautiful words, and I’d think, God, I don’tpray like that. You know I just get to the point. So I’ve neverwanted to let others in on my prayer life.

I told God, “I live such a public life. It seems I’ve lived mywhole life in a glass house. Can’t I just keep my prayer lifebetween You and me?”

And He said, “No. You need to help others to develop arelationship with their Heavenly Father.”

Each minister is used in different areas, and one of theareas in which God seems to have used me is in leadingothers to pray. God has a plan for each of us, and it’simportant that we learn to follow the plan of God for our life. How do we follow that plan? We pray out the plan of God!

So I am going to be obedient and share what I havelearned and practiced concerning prayer. Lately, when myhusband, Ken, and I travel to hold meetings, I have beenteaching in the morning sessions on the subject of prayer. But I don’t just teach. After the message, we practice whatwe’ve learned — we pray!

I want to share with you and our other readers the sameprayer principles that I have shared in meetings throughoutthe country. These principles will help you learn about the

“rules” of prayer in that they willteach you how to pray. Butremember, it’s not enough to learnhow to pray. You must spend timepracticing what you’ve learned. Iencourage you to read thesearticles on prayer and then to

spend time praying as soon as you finish reading. This willhelp you put into practice the principles being taught.

God knows how important prayer is; that’s why He gaveus instructions to pray and instructions on how to pray. Eventhe devil knows how important prayer is. Now it’s time forChristians to realize its importance and to devote ourselvesto a lifestyle of prayer.

To be victorious andspiritually healthy, we must

live a life of prayer.

hough I wasn’t a teacher to, I always had the greatest the Word of God and was very spent hours studying andigging things out for myself inears as a pastor, but I didn’te things. I had no unction or teach. tor, I did teach a Sundayss in the church, however. Thatstom in most PentecostalI never was so glad of anythingas I was when that class wasSunday morning. I’d lay thatuarterly down and think,w I can relax for another week.tested teaching that I wouldn’t Sunday School quarterly forweek. Sometimes I didn’t pickdy it until just before the class

e next Sunday morning! get by with that because I had a unique ability of being able

ething once and never forget have that talent before I got. But afterwards I could read a my high school history bookecite it word for word for thecould do that because I learned the life of God. Walking in the will increase your mentality. uld read the teacher’s lesson the Sunday School quarterly

and rattle it off. Then I’d say, “I’m gladthat’s over! Now I can get back to preach-ing!” And I’d preach up a storm, goinglike an air hammer, waving my arms likea windmill. (I thought it wasn’t preach-ing unless you did that.) I was a preacher, and I loved it. I’d have rather preachedthan eaten.

I preached for nine years. All I hadwas the evangelistic message. I neverpreached anything else. I didn’t haveanything else!

But I remember one Thursday after-noon at three o’clock. (The year was1943. I had been preaching since 1934.) Iwalked across the parsonage living roomand into the kitchen for a drink of water. As I was coming back across the livingroom, right in the middle of the room, something just dropped down on me andinside me. It just clicked down on theinside of me like a coin drops inside a payphone. I stood still. I knew what it was. Itwas a teaching gift. The anointing toteach had dropped inside of me.

When I received any gift from God,I proved it out first, and I wouldencourage you to do the same. Provewhat you’ve got from God, and thenyou can talk about it. But if it’s neverproven, proclaiming it won’t make itso. I never said a word about havingthe anointing to teach.

We had a little prayer group of sevenor eight women who met Wednesdayafternoons from two to four at thechurch. People turned in prayerrequests and these women would prayover the requests and about the churchand the services for a few hours. My

wife always met with them, and I usu-ally met with them.

I suggested to them that we have aBible lesson for an hour before our prayertime, but I didn’t invite anyone extra toattend. It wasn’t an announced meeting.

I started teaching those seven oreight women, and the anointing wouldcome on me. I hadn’t known you couldstand in one spot and just teach theWord and get that strongly anointed toteach. I thought you were supposed tobe hollering at the top of your voice, waving your arms like a windmill, and“spitting cotton”!

But as I just stood there with a hand-ful, teaching them the Word, the anoint-ing would come on me so strongly Icouldn’t stand it. You talk about gettingblessed! It was like getting hold of anelectric current. That anointing and theWord flowed out to the women. Theywent home and told their husbands andothers. Still, we never announced theWednesday afternoon Bible study.

But people started coming Wednes-day afternoons in spite of the fact thatwe had regular Wednesday night ser-vices too. The women’s husbands wouldtake off from work to get in on the after-noon service. It wasn’t long until wefilled the building. We had a biggercrowd Wednesday afternoon than we didWednesday night!

I proved the teaching gift. It worked. Istarted out by faith and kept going, andthe building filled up.

I began to teach more and more until Itaught half the time and preached theother half. Now I seldom get the anointingto preach anymore. Thank God for thatteaching anointing! It’s a little different, but it’s still the same Spirit Who anointsyou for whatever He calls you to do.

seed thoughtsby Lynette

22 March 2004

Several months ago in this column, I beganealing with the issue of time management. I hadlanned on continuing in the very next issue, butircumstances prevented me from writing on theubject. So I would like to continue on that subjecthis month.

In that previous column, I talked about themportance of writing a "to do" list. It is much eas-er to navigate through the day when you haveommitted your schedule to paper, because youon’t have to tax your brain, trying to rememberverything you need to accomplish.

Another key to time management is to pray.roverbs 3:5,6 says, "Trust in the Lord with allhine heart; and lean not unto thine own under-tanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, ande shall direct thy paths." The Lord wants to guideur steps each day. He does not want us to be bur-ened down with the daily decisions we mustake. He wants to help us with those decisions. You may be thinking, “I don’t have time to pray

bout every single thing!” I agree that we don’tlways have a time to just bask in the Presence ofod uninterrupted. But all day long,e can practice being in the Presence ofod through prayer. I make prayer aontinuous focus throughout the day. Iontinually ask God for wisdom. James:5 says, "If any of you lack wisdom, letim ask of God, that giveth to all men

iberally, and upbraideth not ; and ithall be given him." In each situation Iace, I ask God for wisdom. When I haveisdom to make decisions, I can makeach decision wisely and quickly.

One thing I’ve found that causes uso become frustrated with our lack ofime is saying "yes" to something when we shoulday "no." I often commit to do something that Ieally don’t have time to do, simply because I doot want to hurt someone’s feelings. It is impor-

ant to ask the Lord for wisdom on when to say yesnd when to say no — and to also ask Him for theourage to be able to say no when you need to.

We must realize that God never asks, expects, orants us to "do it all." Realizing I couldn’t do itll, and that I wasn’t supposed to do it all, wasard for me. I love to please people, and I enjoyoing things for others. However, I found that Ias overcommitting and overdoing, even at the

expense of abusing my body as well as neglectingmy family. I had to learn to be a God-pleaserinstead of a man-pleaser, and to allow God togive me the wisdom to know which tasks I neededto commit to.

It is important for us to take time to relax andto get away from the daily routine of life. We alllive in a high-pressure, fast-paced world. It isimportant to take time away from that pressureand to take time to rest.

Even Jesus took time to get away and to rest. InMark 6:31, Jesus instructed the disciples to go to adeserted place and rest for a while. I have toadmit that this has been one of the hardest com-mands for me to follow. By nature, I tend to be aworkaholic. Every fiber in my being wants to push, push, push until there is nothing left to push. Ihardly knew what the words "rest" and "relax-ation" meant! And yet, I have learned the wisdom

of what Jesus was saying — at times, it isnecessary for us to get away and rest.

I have often found that as I take time tojust get away — time spent thinking aboutnothing in particular, not even spent inprayer or searching for an answer to a situ-ation — the Lord will reveal to me the exactsolution to what I had been praying aboutand meditating on for months. Just gettingaway, relaxing, and taking my mind off ofeverything ("clearing my mind," as mymom puts it) has often provided me withthe perfect environment in which to hear

from God. God is able to speak to my heart and togive me solutions for each situation in my life.

So I encourage you to make time to be alone —solitary time, not prayer time — just a time torelax. Find a hobby you enjoy and take time for it.You’ll find that in the midst of taking some timefor you, you will live a more peaceable life. Youwill begin to have a positive attitude toward cir-cumstances rather than a negative one. And thatpositive attitude will help you to successfully navi-gate through each day of your life.

The Lord will guide you always: he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthenyour frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.

— Isaiah 58:11 (NIV)
