Science and Engineering Challenge at Kempsey High School

2019 is the 20th year that the Science and Engineering Challenge has been held in Kempsey. Kempsey High School is a proud participant and provider of the

venue for the Challenge. This year there were over 600 students from 27 schools and competition was held over three days. Twenty KHS students from Years 9 & 10 competed in various activities on Tuesday 21st May. They spent the day designing and building items such as moving fingers for a bionic hand in Grasping Straws, an earthquake-proof apartment building in Helter Skelter Shelter, a suspension system for a buggy to explore the surface of

Mars in Return to Mars, a high speed rail network in Stringways and encoding messages for a secret spy organisation in Confounding Communication.

O ur team was running second in the morning activities and while we didn’t win the day, a fun and engaging time was had by all participants. We would like to thank the following people and organisations: Newcastle University for presenting the challenge in cooperation with the NSW Office of the Chief Scientist and Engineer, Kempsey Advisory Training Enterprises, Engineers Australia Mid North Coast, Gordon & Heather Chirgwin, Kempsey Shire Council and Rotary Clubs of Kempsey West, Kempsey and South West Rocks.

A big thank you also to our Year 9, 10 & 11 students who volunteered as mentors for students on the Wednesday and Thursday. Thanks also to our other volunteers including Steve Montgomery our Industry Liaison Officer - STEM Industry Schools Partnerships (S.I.S.P) Development Australia Mid North Coast (RDAMNC), one of our industry partners Ben Granger a Civil Engineer from GHD, staff from Kempsey Shire Council and Charles Sturt University and our tireless volunteers from Rotary. Well done KHS!

KHS Students Participate in the NSW Rural Fire Service Cadet Program

The NSW RFS Secondary Schools Cadet Program is a great way for students to learn new skills which will last them a lifetime. The program provides Year 9 and 10 students with an insight into fire safety and prevention whilst developing practical life skills and a general appreciation of community service and volunteerism.

The aim of the program is to: Develop an interest in the NSW RFS and its

traditions, Provide cadets with a knowledge of fire safety and preparedness, Develop the qualities of leadership, self-discipline, self- reliance, initiative and team work, Encourage cadets to continue service in the NSW RFS or other community service

organisations, Provide training that can contribute to NSW RFS firefighter and other specialist training.

These qualifications can be used later in life, whether it’s for work or for joining a volunteer rural fire brigade. KHS are almost half way through the program and are part of the Lower North Coast Team. The students have enjoyed learning many practical skills along the way.

Thank you to all the teachers and members of the NSW RFS who have organised and run this program for our students. We are extremely fortunate to be involved in such a rewarding course.

UNE Oorala Leadership Camp Armidale, 21 - 23 May

Kempsey High and Melville High Girls Academies travelled together to Armidale, NSW to

attend a Leadership Camp. The 3 day camp gave Year 11 and Year 12 students a taste of

what life on a University campus is like.

Over the intensive 3 day program, the girls participated in a variety of sporting activities. The

daily routine called for girls to be up at 5:30am, ready for a 6:00am start for morning sport,

boxing & wrestling.

During the day there were several programs held in the lecture theatre. Girls listened to

several inspiring facilitators, all champions and high achievers in their respective fields of

NRL, wrestling, weight lifting, academic achievements and culture knowledge.

The evening program

finished at 9:00pm, and

was followed up with a

debriefing session and

mindfulness activities. The

girls expressed how they

had enjoyed meeting new

people, spending time at

UNE, and being extended

out of their comfort zones.

Y ear 10 Students travelled to Port Macquarie to take part in the 12th annual Mid Coast

Careers Market, which was held at the Glasshouse exhibition centre this year.

The event provided a fantastic opportunity for students to gain current information on a variety of

career related topics including; local businesses and training providers, industry specific

employment and training requirements, locally available job opportunities, as well as the

opportunity to participate in hands-

on student centred activities and

discussions with industry experts.

Presenters spoke on a variety of

topics from vocational education and

training opportunities to school

based or full time traineeships and

apprenticeships in the Skills and

Thrills Showcase.

The students really engaged with the

opportunities presented on the day

and were great ambassadors for our

school. Well done Year 10!

Poetry in Action Students from years 7-10 attended a performance of Poetry in Action, a travelling theatre group that brings poetry to life through performance. Poetry in Action was a terrific experience for all involved. The performers presented a play that followed Hannah, Brenton and Eleni as they discuss exactly what poetry is. They explore the different techniques used in poetry and how poetry explores big ideas about the world and being human. Hannah follows the patterns and structures in poetry, while Brenton and Eleni prefer free and open poetry structures. The performance cites examples from poets as varied as Shakespeare to Eminem. Poetry in Action was an entertaining and educational experience and we are glad we were given the opportunity to be a part of the audience. Report by Paige Malloy.

Buddy and Goori Knox

Local music legend Buddy Knox and his youngest son Goori won the Sydney Blues Society Performer of the Year competition, 2019. It’s a big victory for the duo who are now preparing to jet off to Memphis, Tennessee early next year to represent NSW/ACT at the International Blues Challenge. Buddy Knox is a well-known local musician in the Tamworth scene and beyond. The duo have been performing together for more than a decade and Goori said it all just feels “normal” and natural. KHS will be treated to a performance by the duo at the NAIDOC assembly and some KHS students will get to be involved in workshops with the talented duo in Week 10.
