HOUSE FOR A MAKERA house for an artist and his or her craft, be it metalworking, woodworking, or painting. The house is set through the existing berm around the Grand River. The studio space faces
the roadside to invite public curiosity to observe the artist at work, while the river-facing west wing holds the artist’s living quarters. An enclosed garden space between them suggests
a moment of silent self-reflection. This project was entirely hand-drafted and hand-modeled.

THE CONSERVATORY
A library with a built in maker’s space. A center for conservation, but also distribution and dispersal of collective human knowledge.Because the site was so long and narrow, the building has
taken the form of a ramp winding up two floors. Bookshelves are placed on the ramps and act like walls, providing alcoves for private study.

URBAN LANTERN
urbanLANTERN
in collaboration with January Chen, Mayuri Paranathanan, and Sydney Shilling
Emitting a subtle glow, the Urban Lantern not only draws people back home to its location, but also envelops its inhabitants
under its protective light. It is constructed on a parcel of “junk space”, space that is left over between other buildings, and so
our first move was to preserve a pedestrian lane and build the mews-like houses around it.

ENERGIZER
Using tools like HEED (Home Energy Efficient Design), we attempted to design a net-zero classroom building for two 25-child classes. The cost of
mechanical heating and cooling was reduced with the strategic placement of shading devices. The roof is angled to maximize PV panel gain. Ventilation
prevaling wind from SW
and daylight were explored through diagrams and made more efficient through repeated iterations.

SNOASISAn oasis is the calm within a storm. A peaceful moment in an otherwise chaotic world. The Snow Oasis is an exercise in passive design in cold climates.
Morning sun heats up the dark slate to warm the shelter for temporary occupancy. The extended entrance provides cover from the frigid winds.

CO-QUILTING
A space can be radically transformed and re-purposed through a single, simple move. By clearing from a living room all furniture save for a table
and a few chairs, a room that is seldom used suddenly becomes a place to talk and work. The fabric squares on the walls were sourced from scraps and
soften the corners; to create the communal quilt, one must pluck a square from the wall and sew it on by hand.

PARC DES BUTTES-CHAUMONT
Observing the nuances of the picturesque. Terrain, vegetation, pathways. The presence of the city around the park. What one sees and does not see through different moments in time.
The Chinese style landscape painting is an immersive perspective of the park’s elements, adopting that iconography to represent Buttes-Chaumont and Paris beyond.

Through an in-depth study at 1:1 scale, one achieves a greater understanding of both the micro- and macro-processes present in the natural world.
A two-foot by two-foot by two-foot cube from the Canadian Shield was documented and abstracted into a model made from common building materials.
