Line Dance Marathon - Fundraising in Support of HELP for HEROES

We are a group of enthusiastic local line dancers who dance at different venues around the area and have come together to raise money for Help for Heroes at the charity line dance marathon. We are all passionate about our dancing and what could be better than doing something you enjoy for such a good cause. Line dancing gets you out of the house and can be good exercise; furthermore, you don’t need a partner to dance, make new friends and most of all is great fun.

Help for Heroes was our natural choice of charity since not only is it a national favourite but has so much more significance for all of us because literally, it is so close to home!

The dance marathon is very much focussed and supported by local people. In addition to those dancing the marathon and the evening line dance disco plus the wonderful ‘background’ team, it includes kind support from the Mytchett Centre, Roy of Disco-2-U and Eve Williams of Eve’n Lines.

Furthermore, those of you reading this can help us raise more money in other ways. You don’t need to be able to line dance but come and watch the fun whilst you buy a cup of tea and a slice of cake or alternatively donate online. For full details of the options please follow the link:

GP commissioning and all thatAs many of you will know, GPs are to take over the running of their local health budgets by April 2013. At the moment, the local health budgets are the responsibility of NHS Surrey, our local PCT who commission (i.e. pay for) local health services. Over 2,000 people are employed to manage and administer the present local health budget which is in excess of £250m.

I have little doubt that the proposed changes are seen by the Health Secretary as a way of slashing bureaucracy costs, which is politically a very popular move.

The Surrey Heath Commissioning Group has been running for several years and consists of 10 GPs, representing all the Surrey Heath Practices, a lay rep and a rep from the PCT. We meet for a half day every month. Local GPs have an intimate knowledge of how the system works and where there are inefficiencies so this is a great opportunity to apply this knowledge. The Surrey Heath Commissioning Group has been given ‘Pathfinder’ status, which means that we will be given a shadow (pretend) budget to run so that when ‘B-day’ arrives we can avoid the car crash some people are expecting.

Things will now move quite quickly over the coming months. As the representative for the Ash Vale Health Commissioning Group (HCG), I will be in a position to keep you all informed throughout this process and hopefully give you an insight into how this is going to affect us all.

Health cuts are on the wayWhilst we have all been told that ‘frontline services’ are going to be spared from the butcher’s knife, the Health Service has also been told that it needs to make £20b in efficiency savings over the next 3 years. This would appear to be a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul. But the identity of these two has yet to be defined. If Paul is frontline patient care then I would accept that. If the savings go back to Government coffers then I would define that as a cut.

We have been informed by the Chief Exec of NHS Surrey that as from 6.12.2010 certain changes are being made to referrals. These include stopping patients who smoke from having routine surgery unless they have undergone a stop smoking programme. Those patients who smoke and are now on a waiting list will have their position on that list stopped until they have undergone a cessation course.

Other routine operations like hips, knees, feet and gallbladder and spinal procedures are being made bureaucratically more difficult to get approval. The Consultant seeing patients who he/she thinks needs an operation will have to fill out a form that will then have to be approved by the PCT. Otherwise the operation will not be paid for, i.e. it will not take place. This is a crude management device to defer procedures until the new tax year starts in April 2011 and is treating our health needs in a rather shabby way, particularly those patients in pain from arthritis and chronic back pain who might already have waited months or years before even bothering their GP.
