There is scope for morescent in the garden atthis time of year as manyshrubs have scented owersto attract the few pollinating

insects that are about. Try Daphnemezureum, an upright shrub

with pink owers or Daphneodora Aureomarginata anevergreen rounded shrub

with light yellow edgesto the leaves and pinkishscented starry owers.Grow them in a shelteredspot, avoid heavy claysoils and place near a pathor door so you can benetfrom scent as you come andgo.Hamamelis mollis or witch hazel

can be scented too and do best in lightshade with a neutral, moisture retentive, welldrained soil. In winter they have little spideryowers. For lovely fragrance try Hamamaelis xintermedia Pallida with pale yellow owers.Another scented gem is Lonicera purpusii

Winter Beauty, one of the honeysuckle family.

Again it likes a lighter,moisture retentive soil

but is hardy and will lla sheltered space withscent. It is also good forcutting stems for scentin the house.

Prune apple andpear trees by earlyFebruary. It is bestto do this before newgrowth starts. With

established trees, cutout any spindly, dead or

diseased shoots but leavethe main leaders (these are

the main shoots that growupwards) alone. If the tree gets

too tall, prune about half ofthe leaders back to your

required height, thenthe rest the followingyear.

Finish pruningroses before March,cutting back hard tooutward facing budson newer growth. Cut

out spindly stems anddead wood so you have

a framework of strongstems from which new

growth develops.Carefully cut or pull out dead stalks

from ornamental grasses. Fine grasses can becombed with a spring tined rake. Grasses suchas Miscanthus or Stipa require dead stems to becut back near ground level but avoiding cuttingnew growth.
