Landscape architecture is a profession to design for and consider every aspect imaginable. Age, gender, race, geographical location, weather, altitude, culture, and so much more. This is why I am attracted to this profession. Diversity is the key to life. Creating a new design is to create a new opportunity for fun, remembering, stillness, adventure, celebration, or mourning.

My work is intended to inspire, spark an excitement, and represent the diversity that there can be in the world. I believe that landscape architecture is a continually evolving profession that will never rest or have one perfect solution. The key is to find the best possible solution at that time for the people it will be affecting. My goal is to continue to define what role I can play in the world to create projects that engage all individuals that may use a space.

Since 2007, I have had the opportunity to work in building and landscape construction as well as multiple design firms. Displayed, are two constructio projects I had designed and completed building, as well as a full landscape design while in a design firm. I have worked in Manitoba, Alberta, and British Columbia, dealing with many project scales, clients and professional environments. Most of the work I have been able to design or be a part of has been built. My scope of work has ranged from detailed residential design to six Vancouver city blocks of plazas, parks, parkettes and promenades.

This was a small side project completed for St. Amant Hospital in Winnipeg, MB. The client had asked for a simple rendering and short video for a sample of what the fully accessible cottage may look like. I then modelled the cottage from some given plans and co-ordinated with the hospital to create a video.

One sample of a residence I helped to design for Aloe Designs. This design was completed for a small family located in Richmond BC with two small children. Key features of this design were the water gurgler located to the northwest on site and

the custom built play house on the north east, as well as the entertaining area in the centre while still being able to watch over the children. After designs were completed, I helped to construct and install according to the plans we had developed.

Zonda Nellis is a narrow 4-storey tower commercial/residential project where we completed a green roof, roof patio, two separate lower patios and the streetscape to the store fronting Granville Street.

The client requested custom furniture, custom tile entry feature, feature walls, and lighting throughout the design.

Having the opportunity to be a part of a design competition is very valuable and highly recommended. Each competition I enter brings very interesting new insights on design possibilities and knowledge on new world problems. A slightly different form of thinking is required for many competitions. A few lessons I have learned are to always question the brief, stretch all design boundaries to their limits because you have to stand out above all other designs, and always have fun, it is a unique opportunity.

Innovators, makers, merchants, and the public exist separately in Edmonton. Industry’s position on the periphery of the city reduces opportunities for engagement and exchange .

Seed brings together makers, merchants, and innovators to form an urban industrial community. Productive relationships are fostered in a rich environment of commerce, manufacturing, production, and city life.

CORES AND COLLABORATIONThe CORE is a central space around which program is organized. It not only serves as both a formal and informal meeting space for tenants but simultaneously is a space that allows engagement with curious community members who pass through the building.

The STUDIO is a space for ideas and innovation, housing the day to day operations of burgeoning businesses in a flexible and adaptable open floor plan.

The LAB provides a means to prototype and test various product designs from mock-ups to fully functioning finished prototypes.

The MARKET is one of the many advantages that SEED provides to growing your business. A space from which to grow revenue during development and to create relationships with, and gain feedback from customers.

The WORKSHOP offers the skilled fabricators and facilities needed to bring ideas to life. While a more permanent fixture of the building the constant challenge of creating new products in innovative ways will create a greater diversity in the range of skills of its workers.

Collaboration is integral to the success of SEED and the companies which are supported by it. The buildings are intended to foster this collaboration as much as possible and rather than be devoted to a single use can meet many of the needs of a growing business through a solid foundation of infrastructure for fabrication and prototyping accompanied by more flexible spaces that accommodate the dynamic growth of tenants who work in the space.

The Breweryserves as the public interface between the district and the surrounding community, part resource centre part exhibition space.

The DistrictThis system is realized through complex sec-tional relationships within individual build-ings which in turn form a secondary network that links the social and collaborative spaces across the broader district.

The Woodlandshelters the community from Edmonton’s strong northwesterly winds and strengthens connections between a green corridor to the North and cycle paths to the east.

The Commonsis home to the support network which largely differentiates the SEED district from other industrial areas offering services in education and as a place to house large events and gatherings.

Merchant Promenadeoffers flexible spaces along its edges for the sale of products manufactured on site allowing for dialogue about customization and for feedback on products.

Exhibition Hallprovides a space to showcase some of the newly launched products generated within the SEED district.

The Hubis a public space formed by the support buildings of the SEED district where major events such as festivals and product launches can occur allowing engagement and excitement to be fostered with the public.

Throughout my education in the fields of landscape architecture and environmental design, I have completed a total of ten studios. Each studio has offered different expertise to help guide me through the projects and new experiential knowledge on a wide variety of topics and landscapes. Typically, my expertise has revolved around larger scale masterplanning, then moving to a larger scale to provide some closer details of the designs.

Imagine yourself in a sea of gold, waves of wheat surround you, encompass you. Imagine yourself adrift in this sea, tossing and turning, waiting for a destination, a deserted island, an oasis, a break.Imagine yourself in this speck of green, a place along the horizon, a canopy of color, the only hope you see. Living within this space, among a community of people. People who live, work, and play together.

Heimatsiedlung, located in Frankfurt, Germany was to be relocated and redesigned for Winnipeg, Manitoba as a landscaping project. Located in rural northern Winnipeg, this urban setting of Frankfurt was completely restructured to more appropriately fit its new setting.

The mound was of great importance to the

sight. A proper use of excess soil was to be used in an efficient way. The design of the mound was meant to both use the extra soil, help to protect against prevent prevailing winds, and provide another area of possible activities.

Excavation of the site was necessary in order to fulfill the needs of the development

design, basements for all units. This excess soil was not shipped out of the site but was used to build the Comet Trail Mound and the Comet Mound. Because of the nature of the Comet Trail Mound, as allotment terraces, the excavated topsoil was put to use on the mound to promote the growth of the resident’s personal gardens, and apple trees.

The wheat fields surrounding the model are made from grass matts that have been cut to fit within the model area and around the oasis of Jade City. The wooden pieces of the

All other cuts within the model were etched using a laser

cutter. These objects include playgrounds, allotment gardens, sports fields, sidewalks, streets, and private gardens.

Colony Farm Regional Park sits somewhat dormant in a state of separation. This 404 hectare piece of land offers a great potential to connect to its surroundings while raising awareness and education of agricultural practices and wildlife protection. Education plays an important role for young and old. Developing Colony Farm into an educational destination offers the opportunity to complete land use while creating a precedent for knowledge, conservation, and entertainment.

Colony Farm is currently a part of the Agricultural Land Reserve and was once used for agricultural production purposes. Although the park is still

ALR, there is no longer any agricultural practice here. Instead, most of the eastern portion of the park has slowly become conservation lands for wildlife protection.

Colony Educational Park is designed to integrate past and present uses while providing education for future generations. This new design motions to act as a catalyst for urban farming, to develop with food and wildlife in mind, and awareness to how daily products are made and where they are coming from. CEP offers the opportunity to teach individuals how to grow their own food and to source out better choices for food and design.
