Over the past few weeks,
art students at Kildonan-
East Collegiate worked
with their art teacher,
Angel Audrey, and
Winnipeg artist, Annie
Bergen to create a
mural about citizenship.
Ms. Bergen, came to work
with the students through
the Artists In the Schools
program. Students began
the mural plan by
discussing what
citizenship meant to
them.
Ms. Bergen used their
ideas to create the
mural‘s design, which
includes images of the
school and activities that
people participate in
within their community.
The mural was painted
onto panels, and is now
installed on the main
floor of the school. This
fantastic project would
not have been possible
without the generous
assistance of the Manitoba Arts Council.
Message from Administration
Counsellors‘ Corner
March 2014
There is a lot of information in the
counselling office regarding post-
secondary plans. We encourage
those students who are interested in post-secondary
education to make an appointment and speak with a
counsellor to answer any questions they may have.
Students are reminded to ensure that thirty (30)
required credits are achieved for graduation. Guidance
counsellor appointments can be made if there are any
concerns.
Scholarships and Awards:
A reminder to grade 12 students to check the KEC
website for scholarship information and deadlines. A
number of scholarship deadlines are coming up soon!
Congratulations to Shehnaaz Brar for making it to the
selection stage of the YMCA-YWCA Women of
Distinction Awards. The final award winners will be
announced at a gala dinner on May 7th.
Counsellors have had the opportunity to speak with
many students and parents regarding programming
choices for next year. The Guidance Office will be open
one week prior to September start up for students to
make alterations to schedules they have received.
Schedule changes will also be permitted during the
first week of school in September.
We encourage all KEC students in their studies and
look forward to offering assistance to students and
parents whenever possible.
A heartfelt thanks to our Parent Advisory Council and our
community for providing our staff with a wonderful staff
appreciation week. We are grateful for all of your support
throughout the year and thank you for the opportunity to
work with your children.
Students and staff have had an excellent first semester
full of many wonderful learning opportunities and
extracurricular activities. Our newsletter is full of stories
and pictures of their successful ventures. I encourage
you to spend time reading the newsletter and sharing our
stories with family and friends.
Semester two is well underway and our students have
settled nicely into their new routines and classes.
Students received academic updates from their teachers
prior to spring break and will receive a formal midterm
report on April 24th. It is important to review with your
children their progress to date to ensure they are on
track to a successful second semester. Be sure to mark
your calendars for our next student parent teacher
evening which will be held on May 1st, 2014. Parents are
encouraged to schedule an appointment with their child‘s
teachers. We also welcome all parents to attend our
Parent Advisory Council Meetings which are held on a
monthly basis; our next meeting is on April 8th, 2014
from 5:00 to 6:30pm in the library.
We have completed our spring registration and our open
house for the 2014-2015 school year. We have over
400 course offerings for our students and students have
multiple opportunities to support their learning. Programs
are offered in performing arts, technology, vocational
education, advanced placement, student leadership,
biomedical internships, transition education and much
more. It was great to see so many parents join us for
each of these events. We thank you for taking advantage
of the strong tradition of excellence at Kildonan-East
Collegiate. Our graduates have a competitive advantage
as they graduate and move on to their futures! We
encourage you to contact the school should you have any
questions about your child‘s registration.

GRAD 2014 UPDATE
This year‘s grad committee meets every Monday at lunch, in room 206. All graduating students are welcome to participate.
Parents wanting information about graduation events or volunteer opportunities are invited to attend the parent-information
evening which will take place Monday, April 21st at 6:00pm in the KEC library.
Baby Pictures
Parents are asked to ensure that their graduate bring in a baby or early-childhood picture of themselves for the slide-show
presentation, which will be shown at the Dinner and Dance and at Convocation. Pictures can be e-mailed to babypic-
[email protected]. Please name the file with your last and first name, or drop pictures off at the office with your full name
and TA‘s name so they can be returned with ease.
Fundraising
Grade 12 students are encouraged to participate in the number of fundraising activities held throughout the year. *Students
may fundraise an amount up to $180.00 (two Dinner & Dance Tickets - one for the Grad and one for the Grad's guest/date).
Any amounts fundraised beyond $180.00 will go into the general Grad fund and cannot be transferred to another KEC Grad
student at the time of ticket purchase*
Sobeys—Graduates have been encouraged to participate in Sobeys gift card sales. The profit they earn from these sales goes
to off-set individual Grad Dinner and Dance ticket prices. The next due date for Sobeys gift cards is Friday, April 11 th.
Gourmet Lollipops—Grad Committee members are continuing to sell Candy Tree lollipops for a dollar every Friday at lunch. This
is a profitable fundraiser, which requires a significant commitment from our grad committee members.
Bud, Spud, and Steak- There is an annual Bud, Spud and Steak fundraiser held every spring, an event that is always
well-attended and raises considerable funds for individual graduates, as well as for the general grad fund. This year‘s Bud,
Spud and Steak will take place Friday, April 25th at Cowboys, Canad Inns. All those in attendance must be 18+.
For every $20.00 ticket sold, grads will receive $10.00 toward their grad tickets. More information will be available at the par-
ent meeting on April 17th. Questions about the Bud, Spud and Steak can be directed to Ms. Cheryl Kalinin, (204) 667-2960,
ext. 4914.
A merchant letter can be found on the Grad 2014 link on the KEC website or in the front office of the school requesting prizes
for the Silent Auction for the Bud, Spud and Steak. Please feel free to make copies of this letter and gather prizes for this
event. Prizes can be dropped off directly at KEC‘s front office. Please indicate from whom the prize(s) was received, so we can
thank those businesses who have donated.
Dinner and Dance
We will require parents to volunteer as chaperones and casino operators for the big night, June 23rd, at the Fairmont! We also
need a volunteer to create baskets for the silent auction, as well as to transport these prizes to the Fairmont the day before
the event. We look forward to seeing you at the parent information evening.
Parent involvement is crucial to making graduation a special and memorable event for our graduates!

This anthology of short stories was written by EAL students in grades nine through twelve after they completed the
short story unit in class. These students come from a variety of countries and linguistic backgrounds. The stories
vary in genre and cover a variety of themes including: love, tragedy, sanity, survival, family, sustainability, hope and
justice. Each student that contributed to this anthology first wrote their original story in English, and then translated
it into their mother tongue. The languages the students translated into include Vietnamese, Hindi, Arabic, Korean,
Farsi, Punjabi, Spanish, Tagalog, Swahili, and Yoruba.
The purpose of this project was to introduce new Canadian students to the world of short stories, and to celebrate
their talent and imagination in English (their second language), as well as celebrate, respect and value their mother
tongue, their culture, and their roots.
Semester two is underway and the international program is doing well. We said good-bye to 16
international students at the end of January but greeted 9 brave, new students. This semester our
program has students representing Brazil. Germany, South Korea, Hong Kong, China and Mexico.
Even though this year has been the coldest winter in the last 35 years, our international students
have put on a brave face, toques, mitts and have enjoyed experiencing a Canadian winter. As the
semester continues students will participate in a day of cross country skiing, a trip to the Manitoba
Museum, a walking tour of the exchange district and hopefully sooner than later a Winnipeg
summer. Be sure to introduce yourself to KEC's international students when you see them around
the school or in the community!

Ms. Weisshaar‘s Grade 9 English Class, as well as a contingent from Ms. Audrey‘s Art classes, visited the
Winnipeg Art Gallery in December. We toured several exhibits, concentrating on exploring the vast array
of mediums used to create art. Our first exhibit was the work of British war photojournalist Don McCullin.
The pieces were very heart-wrenching in their depiction of war and its effect on the civilians involved. In
the Math and Art exhibit, we saw explored how interwoven math is in the creative process. Some of us
may have almost mistaken a particular sculpture as seating! The class got to partake in a mind- blowing
video installation called ―The Clock‖ by Christian Marclay. ―The Clock‖ is a 24 hour video in which clips of
TV shows and movies all have an element of time, either a clock or spoken reference. They are edited
together to play in real time. We could have stayed and watched for an entire day. The students also
toured the European Renaissance and Baroque Art and the Inuit Sculpture exhibit, both of which had
several pieces that amazed us. In our 90 minute tour, we experienced over a hundred different
substances used to make the artwork. We only wished we could have stayed longer.

Mason Dick, a former Reiver football standout and two-time
lineman of the year in the WHSFL, is continuing to make noise
on the gridiron. During the spring of 2013, Mason made a big
impression at the University of Saskatchewan Huskies camp
and earned himself playing time during the season. This
achievement is amazing for a rookie fresh out of high school.
This winter, Mason played for Canada's National Team down in
Texas at the International Bowl and was recently selected to
be part of Canada's National Junior team that will travel to
Kuwait for the World Championship! Well done, Mason!

AP MATH and CALCULUSAP MATH and CALCULUS
In early March, the hard-working students in Mr. Hawkins‘ Grade
9 AP and Mrs. Ramsay‘s Calculus classes took a break from
their studies. They spent the day exploring the University of
Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. At the U of W, a tour of
the facility provided insight into life after high school, along with a great pasta lunch. The WAG display
provided a connection between the two surprisingly similar worlds of Math and Art. Today it‘s touring
Winnipeg for these students, tomorrow the world!

PHOTOGRAPHY
Photography has been busy with various projects. It's been an exciting past few months.
Our joint project with Murdoch Mackay Collegiate concluded with an energetic day during which the students showcased their
skills and expertise in their areas. The end result was fantastic. We look forward to joining forces again soon. A big thank you
to KEC's Ms. Lachowich, and her grade 12 Hairstyling students, Murdoch Mackay's, Ms. Miller, and her Fashion Technology
students, and to the grade 12 KEC Photography students.
The grade 11 & 12 students braved the cold and made their way to The Forks to complete a photography assignment. The
focus of the assignment was to capture images of Aboriginal artifacts & portraiture with available light. This gave students the
opportunity to continue building their skills and confidence in photography.
The Humane Society and their volunteers eagerly introduced us to some of their four-legged family members. We had the
opportunity to meet five beautiful, enthusiastic dogs who proudly ―smiled‖ for their photo session. Having these dogs pose
(sit still) was a challenge the grade 11 students overcame with pride. The photo shoot resulted in a number of stunning
photographs to share, and a new found appreciation to working with our new furry friends. Grade 11 student, Sandra
Skorupski was determined to make this project a reality. Sandra took the initiative by investigating whom to contact at the
Humane Society and was instrumental in making this project happen. We look forward to meeting more canine friends and
having the opportunity to explore more pet photography.
Some upcoming projects will be taking us to the Legislative Building, Assiniboine Park Zoo and Conservatory, Exchange District
and Bird's Hill Park. We are looking forward to the opportunity to meet and capture toddlers and babies in our Children
Photography Unit and are extremely excited to impress you with our
visual arts

Basketball
Congratulations to all six basketball
teams as each team made it to their League semi-
finals. The Grade 9 Boys lost a heart breaker to MBCI
in the final as did the Junior Varsity Boys losing to
Garden City. The Junior Varsity Girls lost a close one
49-47 to Selkirk and the Varsity Boys as well as the
grade 9 Girls both lost in the semi-finals to MBCI. The
Varsity Girls lost a hard fought match against Miles
Mac.
At Provincials the Varsity Boys were given an
automatic wildcard birth and ended up losing a close
one to Glenlawn in the quarter finals. The JV boys
also entered the Provincials and won their first game
before bowing out to Garden City once again. The JV
Girls were given an opportunity to play Oak Park for a
wildcard birth and unfortunately lost their game. The
Grade 9 Boys were also invited to compete in the
provincials which will take place at Glenlawn
Collegiate March 24th–28th.
A number of players were recognized as league
all-stars including Moira Kennedy, Aimee Garland and
Bailey Koop were all-stars at the JV Girls level,
Emmanuel Akot and David Mugugu at the JV Boys
level and Daliny Yang, Martina Akot, Dominic Scarlett
and Arshdeep Gill were all selected at the Varsity

KEC Cheerleaders—Our cheerleading team has been very this
year participating in a few competitions in the province. Our first
unofficial competition was held at the University of Manitoba where
our KEC team and other cheerleading teams throughout the province
could come together to showcase their routines and stunts
in front of peers and an audience. The judges also had an
opportunity to practice their skills in preparation for the
competitive season. Our first official competition occurred
in February in Steinbach, MB. I am proud to say that the
team brought back with them a first place trophy for their
division, Senior Small Co-ed Level 2. On March 23rd, the
team was back at the University of Manitoba for the Bison
Grand Championship. Once again we placed first in our
division. There is one more competition to look forward to
which is the Provincial Competition which will be held on
April 26th in Portage la Prairie. We are looking forward to
demonstrating our routine and stunts and bringing home
another first place trophy. A big thank you goes out to all
the team members for their continued dedication and
commitment to the team. Ms. Paterson would also like to
thank Ashlee Smith, the team‘s coach for her continued
support and guidance. Ashlee has brought to the team a lot
of positive energy and experience. She herself is a
Cheerleader on the Power Elite team. Together we make a
wonderful team and are very proud to represent KEC.

Mr. Thompson‘s Global Issues class had the opportunity to visit and volunteer at Siloam Mission on
Thursday February 27th. In addition to touring the facility and learning more about the issue of poverty
and homelessness in Winnipeg, students took part in a variety of volunteering experiences including
preparing and serving lunch and sorting donations. As a result of this profound and eye opening
experience, the students worked on a Take Action project in order to raise awareness of this issue and
to try to work towards finding solutions to deal with it.
Throughout the week of March 3rd - March 9th students planned and implemented a number of projects
including social media campaigns (Twitter, Facebook), pizza sales, clothing and food drives, and public
service announcements. Collectively students were able to raise over $500.00 for Siloam Mission, as
well as several pounds of food, and boxes of clothing. Students furthered their research in poverty in our
city by inviting a speaker from RaY (Resource Assistance for Youth), into our classroom. Students were
able to learn about their organization, which helps homeless youth find jobs, housing, and improve their
skills. Students were able to talk with Sarah, a former homeless youth and learn about her experiences
on the streets of Winnipeg, as well as how we, as KEC students, can help support their center. Watch
for projects to support this resource in the near future.

Gee willikers that was a fun
concert! It was an evening of
excellent music performed by
excellent musicians! KEC
musicians performed at the
Université de St. Boniface in
January to a full crowd of friends,
family, and teachers! All of the
Band and Choir ensembles
performed wonderfully. There was
also a line up of special guests
including the KEC Men‘s choir and
the Tone Chimers who were a
fantastic addition to the concert.
Fun fact: Most of the soloists in
the concert were in grade 9!!! We
heard some wonderful solos in the
Great Locomotive Chase (yes it is
exactly what it sounds like), and in
the Vocal Jazz. Congratulations to
all who performed!
Well that was a fun time! KEC
Jazz ensembles got a chance to
perform for other schools and
get clinics from jazz
professionals at the Brandon
Jazz Festival in March! During
the trip the ensembles got to
also perform for a local Senior‘s home.
Next time you see someone who went to
Brandon this year, ask them what their
highlight was and be ready for a story and a
half! Congratulations to Resonance, Vocal
Jazz, and the Jazz Band (a.k.a. Tomato
Basil) on a fantastic trip!

The Girls Club had a special guest speaker and performer on Friday, February 21st. Sierra Dawn Sky Noble is a Canadian
singer-songwriter, and fiddle player. Sierra spoke to the club about her life as a high school student. She spoke of the struggles
of being a victim of bullying and how she overcame the suffering she felt for many years. Nobel played her guitar and sang
songs most meaningful to her and answered all the questions with honesty and a positive outlook on life. The members of the
club felt inspired, and many could relate to Nobel‘s story.

On Wednesday March 19th, 15 KEC
students and 5 teachers travelled to Lac Du
Bonnet, Manitoba for a day of ice fishing.
The group left KEC at 7:00am and were on
the lake ice fishing by 9:00am. Several
students were lucky enough to catch fish,
including: Walleye, Sauger, Northern Pike,
and even salamanders‘. The highlight of
the day was a 40 inch Northern Pike pulled
up through the ice, by one of the students,
Tyler Carey. The weather person was very
cooperative that day, finally providing the
anglers with above zero temperatures.

Career Bridge Students Gaining Valuable Experience
Thirty-five students in grade eleven and twelve are now starting their job and career explorations as part of
the Career Bridge Program. After their internship, resumes will be updated with new work skills,
experience, and references for future employment. This semester, student work placements include
Concordia Hospital, policing, veterinary, auto technology, education, retail, food services, automobile parts
and service, recreation, and child care.
If you are interested in exploring a possible career, developing real-world skills, building a resume, gaining
valuable references and contacts, or getting your foot in the door in a local profession, business, or
industry (and earn TWO CREDITS in the process!), Career Bridge is for you.
If you are planning on entering the Biomedical Internship Program when you reach grade 12, our program
can give you a leg up in grade 11 by arranging a resume building experience in a hospital, pharmacy, or
other area of interest.
Our former students have said that Career Bridge was one of the most important classes or programs that
they had enrolled in. If you would like to the same kind of experience, be sure to keep Career Bridge in
mind when you register for courses. The program is listed under Career Education on your application
form.
If you have any questions about the program, or if you would like to discuss what exciting career
exploration opportunities await you, come see Mr. Kutka in Career Bridge, room 143, or speak with your
Teacher Advisor who can also register you for this course for next year.

The halls of Kildonan-East Collegiate may have been empty of students on March 14th, but there was still plenty of noise! Around 150 KEC staff members took an hour out of their in-service day to participate in a Drum Café, which is an exercise that had them working together to create rhythms as a team… and having a lot of fun in the process. Drum Café began in Johannesburg, South Afri-ca, in 1998 and has since spread around the world and across Canada, inspiring and moti-vating groups from school children to Fortune 500 executives.

The Human Rights Club ran a couple of events this term designed to help others and raise awareness. The
first was participating in Operation Donation, an annual
food drive for Winnipeg Harvest. Schools across the
province collect donations for local food banks. The
school contributions are matched pound for pound by
both Canada Safeway and Peak of the Market. Coin
collections were held around the school and Jessica
Samonte organized a bake sale to raise funds. A total
of 61 pounds of food and $177 was raised.
The second event was a Fair Trade cinnamon
bun, coffee, and hot chocolate sale, which raised $240
for rainwater harvesting tank projects in Tanzania.
Thanks to Tall Grass Prairie and River East Transcona
Teachers Association for assistance with this project.
Animation Students Build Game
Characters
Grade 10 students in Digital Film 25S have
completed video promotion projects, 2D
animation projects and are starting to
create Claymation morph animations.
Morph animations are less about the story
and more about showing the process of
deforming one clay shape into another.
Pairs of students take about 100 still
photographs to make 10-20 seconds of
morph animation, then all the animations
will be combined into a final product which
will be shared on SchoolTube, a school
friendly video sharing service.
When Term 4 begins these same students will learn about creating
game characters. Students create 3D models of robot characters in
Cinema 4D, a process which involves changing and combining basic
geometric shapes such as spheres, cubes, and cylinders to create the
various parts of the characters. This connects back to the Claymation
project, except that now the ‗clay‘ is a surface mesh of vertices and
edges that can be edited, pushed and pulled to created new shapes.
After the robot models are completed, texture and colors are added,
and a structure for controlling the characters is begun by creating a
‗skeleton‘ of joints, and binding it to the models. Binding controls how
each part of the model moves when different parts of the skeleton are
moved. This process is known as rigging the model.
The rigged robot will then be imported into a 3D game engine, Unity3D,
where students will add scripting to apply basic moves such as walking,
running and jumping. These moves can be controlled by computer key
presses, mouse movements, as well gamepad joysticks and buttons.
Students then go back into the Cinema 4D program to create their own
animations for a special move, such as a back flip, hand stand or throw.
When the scenes are complete they will be posted to: http://
kongregate.com/accounts/jthomson
By the time these students are in the new Grade 12 course Game
Design 40S, they can be designing and creating their own game
prototypes with the same tools and scripting languages used by
professional developers.

News from the library… It is that time of year when there is nothing more relaxing than grabbing your favourite book and getting some sunshine, and at KEC Library we have many new arrivals of all genres to help you out. Each month a new batch of “New Arrivals” is displayed in our library and available for your enjoyment. Stop by and check them out!
Here are a few of the April new releases:
The Bling Ring by Nancy Jo Sales
Over the course of a year, the members of the now infamous Bling Ring allegedly burglarized some of the biggest names in young Hollywood. Driven by celebrity worship, vanity, and the desire to look and dress like the rich and famous, these seven teenagers made headlines for using Google maps, Facebook and TMZ to track the comings and goings of their targets. Many of the houses were unlocked, alarms disabled. A “perfect” crime – celebrities already had so much, why shouldn’t the Bling Ring take their share?
Ape House by Sara Gruen
Isabel Duncan, a scientist at the Great Ape Language Lab, doesn’t understand people, but apes she gets – especially the bonobos Sam, Bonzi,Lola, Mbongo, Jelani, and Makena, who are capable of reason and communication through American Sign Language. Isabel feels more comfortable in their world than she’s ever felt among humans – until she meets John Thigpen, a very married reporter writing a human interest feature. But when an explosion rocks the lab, John’s piece turns into the story of a lifetime – and Isabel must connect with her own kind to save her family of apes from a new form of human exploitation.
