Welcome to the Summer 2012 Edition of the KCS Informer.

Due to time constraints we did not publish a Spring edition and therefore this edition is packed with a mixture of interesting articles, new product features and sales promotions.

The feedback from our KCS Schools Customer Care Survey is published between pages 5 and 11. This is the 7th year of our survey and we are really pleased with the feedback provided by our customers. As always we publish the full results in the KCS Informer, for you to read and hopefully our 12/13 Action List will keep you informed of our intentions during this year.

The other central article concerns our KCS Own Brand range. We have taken the decision to refresh the branding of our range and you will notice in the article between pages 20 to 23, that we have a new name: “YOU”.

All existing products will remain the same on the inside, but outwardly they will now be branded .

We hope that from all the pre-publicity material that this change is not really new for you, but if we have missed you, then apologies.

Once again, thank you for your continued support and if you have further ideas or suggestions in relation to KCS, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,

Steven Munday KCS General Manager T: 01622 605485 E: [email protected]

We received a record number of responses and for the fi rst time we had replies from new areas for KCS such as Cornwall, Devon and Somerset. We are very proud of the results and over the following pages you will hopefully see the reasons for our pleasure.

The Survey is immensely important for us as it gives KCS the opportunity to fi nd out what our customers require from us and how we perform against your expectations. Can we take this opportunity to thank all those of you who submitted a response and we hope that the lucky winners of the “Dymo labelling machines” put them to good use.

We hope that you will respond later this year and make 2012 a new record year for response levels.

12 Phonics

P H O N I C SIn April 2011, the Government announced matched funding of up to £3,000 on a selected range of synthetic

phonics products and training, as contained in a catalogue entitled “The Importance of Phonics”.

This funding is available until 31st March 2013, to all state funded schools (including academies and free

schools) in England with Key Stage 1 pupils.

How to claim your Phonics Matched FundingFollow these simple instructions:

• Account set-up: Hassle free ordering with KCS by using your existing account number or by using the link below to use our fast track account set up. Return your completed KCS Account Form by email to [email protected].

• Choice: You choose which items from the catalogue best meet your requirements, making

as many individual purchases as you wish, but you will only receive matched funding up to a maximum amount of £3,000 based upon a total spend of £6,000 which is available until March 2013 – for example:

- School selects products from the catalogue to a value of £6,000.

- School places the orders with KCS.

- KCS invoices only 48% – School only pays £2,940 – Leaving it an additional £120 (including matched funds) to spend on Phonics!

- KCS recovers 50% of the catalogue value directly from the DfE.

- Simple and worry free.

• Remember: you can make multiple orders until March 2013, and you do not need to spend your full allocation. If you decide to spend more than

your allocation then this will be invoiced at the full catalogue price.

• Order placement: You can place your order via: Phone 0845 270 8811 Fax 0800 243 732 Email [email protected]

• Delivery: If you have ordered “P” code products before Noon, then you will enjoy free next day delivery direct to your school. “T” codes will take between 10-14 days.

• Invoicing: You will only be invoiced for 48% of the value of the “T” and “P” products you have ordered from the catalogue. Training is dealt with differently – please see the details opposite.

• Queries: Phone 0845 270 8811

N.B. As this is a match-funded initiative, no refunds or returns are available – so please order with care! (VAT will be charged where applicable.)

How to claim your Phonics Training Matched Funding

You can reclaim 50% of the cost of any Phonics course, plus VAT where applicable. Details can be found at the back of the Phonics catalogue (pages 102 onwards). KCS wants to make the process of claiming back this money as simple as possible.

How to claim the money back

Once you have completed the training course, details are sent to KCS to enable you to reclaim 50% of the cost of the course, plus VAT where applicable. You must provide a copy of the invoice together with a completed copy of the “Match-Funding Claim and Feedback Form”, to obtain your matched funding.

The form can be found on the inside back cover of the Phonics catalogue or from the KCS Webshop.

Once we have received your invoice and form, these are submitted to the DfE. Receiving the credit from the DfE may take at least three months. We will then credit this amount to your KCS account.

Returning the forms

To make returning the relevant documents as easy as possible, KCS has set up a dedicated email address, a PO Box address and a free fax number for your convenience.

FlexibleFurniture for Tidemill Academy

When Tidemill Primary School moved to a new building and became an academy, they took a completely new look at their nursery and reception classrooms. We worked together with them to create natural paths and boundaries between the activity areas using Community Playthings Roomscapes furniture. These boundaries help children feel secure and engage deeply in all the activities on offer.

Here is what Carl at Tidemill Academy said about the project:

“After visiting settings and seeing Community Playthings furniture in action, I knew it was the quality solution we wanted. Sitting down with a planning adviser in their display room proved invaluable. Working with their visual designs as well as playing around with the furniture really brought the vision of the rooms together. The children love the furniture which has created a calm and safe environment that they are able to explore and use independently. The Roomscapes furniture has proved extremely useful as we are continually changing our environment to meet our children’s needs.”

Get ya fresh data here! Use our FMS Web Service!

KCS can now offer a modern alternative to all SIMS/FMS users: the integration of KCS Webshop accounts with SIMS/FMS systems, creating a 21st century e-procurement solution!

By directly linking your KCS Webshop account to the SIMS/FMS system, you take advantage of these significant improvements:

• Always up-to-date Data: You’ll never need to update your data again! Once the link has been set up, all ordering is done on our webshop www.kcswebshop.co.uk, where the latest prices, products and promotions will always appear.

• Greater Efficiency: Tired of entering orders twice: once into the webshop & once into SIMS? An FMS linked account eliminates this double entry: once on the webshop, orders can be directly imported into FMS for immediate authorisation!

• Immediate Order Submission: When an order is posted or faxed to us, it still requires entering into our system by a member of our sales team. When an order is sent via the webshop, it enters our system immediately!

Curious about the steps required to link your webshop account with SIMS/FMS? Our set-up guide can be downloaded from the “Management Systems” page on the KCS Webshop - but please remember, you will not be able to actually link your system until you have received certain details from us.

The first step to creating the link is to download and complete the FMS Web Account form, found on the New Customer web page.

Still want to use the SIMS disk for your data? No problem. Although KCS are no longer producing physical disks, the SIMS disk data can still be downloaded from the webshop and imported into your SIMS system in the same way as in previous years. For a full guide to this process, including a video tutorial, head to the Management Systems page on the KCS Webshop and click on SIMS button.

Traditionally, refreshing SIMS/FMS systems with updated catalogue data is done annually by loading a SIMS file (downloaded or supplied on disc) into the program.

Page 29: KCS Informer Spring 2012

KCS no longer produce or send SIMS disks containing catalogue data to our customers. We now offer a 21st century alternative for your SIMS/FMS systems - to learn more about the advantages, see the FMS Service Advantages page.

For customers who prefer to continue to use the SIMS disk method, we still offer the necessary SIMS data in the form of a free download.

To update your system using the download, please follow our step-by-step video guide found on our webshop www.kcswebshop.co.uk.

If you experience any problems or have any queries regarding the SIMS data, please contact your local SIMS office, or call our Customer Care Team on 0870 270 8811 or email [email protected].

John Hall of Norton Knatchbull School was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award on stage at the Music for Youth Schools Prom Concerts in front of thousands of people at the Royal Albert Hall. John was given the Award by Tim Loughton MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Children and Families.

The Classic FM Music Teacher of the Year Awards seek to recognise and reward those teachers who

have made a real difference to the musical life of young people. As part of the Award, John will receive musical equipment and instruments from Yamaha and software from Avid for his school.

The judges commented: “John has been teaching at Norton Knatchbull School since 1983, producing very high quality music, year in, year out, not only in extra-curricular groups, but also in the classroom. This is clearly refl ected in his results. Norton Knatchbull School is now known as a place of musical excellence and his students speak very highly and proudly of him, as do the parents. The judges were bowled over by the amount he has achieved and the standard of music he has helped to produce. He has given his students a fantastic start in their musical life, as has been seen in the many occasions he has performed here at the Music For Youth Schools Prom.”

On receiving the award John commented: “I was surprised and amazed to be given this award. Teaching has always given me great pleasure together with many opportunities I would not otherwise have had. Even now, after 32 years in the profession, I am still fi nding new challenges. To be recognised for doing something I love is a great honour and I am delighted to receive this award.”

We decided to allow a neat, established part of our field to grow wild, A team worked with our premises manager to build a rustic fence to define the area and a low level stile was added as the entrance.

Something new came to Birkbeck Primary School this year…!

33School Shout!

Chippings and logs were donated by two local tree surgeons and ten beautiful, young trees arrived thanks to a local garden centre.

It was then the turn of the children, who ventured out in groups wearing their waterproofs, to enjoy the new area by playing hide and seek and interacting with nature first hand!

“Forest School” has created a fantastic, new, outdoor learning opportunity for all our children. Small groups experience the outdoors in exciting and creative ways; they see a space grow and change and learn about nature from first hand experiences.

Kristian Saunders - Office Manager Birkbeck Primary School

The team were raising funds for the John Pridmore Mission and put a lot of work in to publicising the event with lots of posters and an advert on the website, so there was no excuse to not know what was happening. A teacher was even prepared to dress up as a baked bean!

On the last day of Term 1, four sixth formers - Abby Young, Josh Thomason, Beth McCrossan and Evie Pritchard held a ‘Baked Bean’ throwing event, which proved very popular with the students.

Baked Bean Throwing – Messy but Fun!

On the day we got lots of teachers involved by asking them to have beans thrown at them and this got very messy! The teachers included- Mr Pillinger, Mr Graves, Miss Morriarty, Mr Mannion, Mr Rescorla and Mr Henderson.

Students and some staff paid £1 to throw a cup of beans at the teacher of their choice. Lots of people turned up and we managed to raise £90 for the mission, who help young people in schools, prisons, parishes and retreats.

The new building is called the Sue Laker Building, named in memory of Sue Laker, the nursery teacher who sadly passed away in 2008. It was officially opened by her family members in the presence of the Mayor of Greenwich, Cllr Jim Gillman and the Mayoress, Cllr Janet Gillman, local ward councillors, children, parents and staff.

The new nursery building includes its own computer suite and interactive whiteboard, self-contained showering facilities and fully fitted kitchen

Head teacher Sheila White said, “Wyborne has a very strong tradition for early years education, and our children are delighted with the new building, which provides them with a superb learning environment both indoors and outdoors.

“The new building is a fitting tribute to Sue Laker who made a huge impression on the children she taught and on the school community, and who is still sorely missed.”

The new purpose built nursery building has a Machine Profile Log construction which is a modern twist on the traditional log cabin. It is the first nursery of its kind in the South-East. It also has its own landscaped area and covered outdoor play space.
