Katherine High School - Term 4 Week 8 - Newsletter Principal’s Message Week 5 is an important time for all students at Katherine High School. Mid way through the first term, all students should have a clear idea of how they are progressing. Before the end of next week, subject teachers will be attempting to contact all parents/carers of students at risk of failure. We have adopted the following system to help with this. Every member of staff has been asked to examine the progress of every student in their subject, and indicate the following: GREEN a green light means that the student has met the requirements and is doing well. They are on time, prepared, work is handed up by the deadline, all assignments have been passed, they pay attention in class and set a good example to all other students. AMBER an amber (orange) light means that the student has only partially met the expectations of a good student. They sometimes meet deadlines, sometimes come prepared and pay attention and while they pay attention for some of the time, they often distract other students. RED a red light means that the student is failing. It is an indication that the student has failed to meet deadlines, has not completed assignments in or out of class, is often late or has poor attendance, is generally not prepared and when in class, often disrupts those around them. As the parent/carer you have responsibilities to ensure that your child attends school regularly, that they are prepared when they leave home, and that you check to see how they are progressing with their assignments. If you have any doubts as to how your child is progressing at school, call the school and make an appointment with the subject teacher. Special Welcome We welcome Mr Thomas to our staff. Mr Thomas is from Brisbane and he has moved here with his family so that he can teach Maths and Science. Mr Thomas comes with exceptional skills in maths and science – he has had a good teacher as his mother is a recently retired Professor in Maths and Science. We welcome Mr Thomas to our school and are very fortunate that he has chosen to come to Katherine High School. Attendance Attendance at school is one of the most important gifts we can give as parents/carers of our children. A child who only attends 75% of the time effectively misses one term every year. A child who is 10 minutes late to every class misses the equivalent of 5 weeks of school every year. A child that is 20 minutes late to school every day misses almost 6 weeks of school every year. Give the gift of an education. Encourage your child to attend regularly, on time, and to be prepared. Year 7 Science Our budding scientists are off to a brilliant start! This week in science, our year 7 students were developing their understanding of the way science works (the “scientific method”) in practice, as they donned safety gowns and goggles and burned different substances at different temperatures using a Bunsen burner. It was hard work learning the names of all the pieces of equipment but well worth it when the magnesium burnt so brightly! (Think of sparklers on a cake.)

Stage 2 Cookery

I am very excited to be able to teach this subject and so far the students share my enthusiasm. In the past 3 ½ weeks we have covered kitchen safety and hygiene, organisation, knife skills and the importance of good food presentation. The course has four components practical, group task, reflection and discussion and the externally assessed investigation. We have plans for a long table lunch and hope to undertake school catering opportunities. The students have made a bright start in the kitchen completing three practicals and expanding their food knowledge and skills. I look forward to the rest of the year with the Year 12’s. If you have any questions about your child’s involvement and the required work for Stage 2 Cookery please don’t hesitate to email me on [email protected] . I look forward to meeting those who can make our Parent Meet and Greet next Wednesday. Adrienne McMahon Enrichment Teacher

Stage 1 Outdoor Education

Our Stage 1 Outdoor Education class has had their first practical experience of the year, visiting Nitmiluk National Park to begin investigating sustainable use of environments and park management strategies. Practical experiences have been limited throughout the first four weeks due to a good wet season impacting river levels and water safety. Students participated in hiking and swimming activities in water holes opened by Parks and Wildlife NT. Students handled the physical demands of trip exceedingly well and unfortunately lost the game of water rugby to a dominant staffing group.
