Project Profile: The DeSoto, Texas school district had safety, technology and the environment in mind when developing their new school, Katherine Johnson Magnet Technology Academy (KJMTA). KJMTA is a 109,500 square foot school building home to over 900 students in the grades K-5. The new academy is aimed to focus on helping more than 72% of the population that is considered economically disadvantaged and due to that, children are limited to opportunities that could lead them to a large variety of career paths. Building Challenge: To provide students with a strong foundation for tomorrow’s jobs, the design team developed the building to support the Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) and Outdoor Learning curriculum. Along with engagement, technology and the environment, a main focus of the building is also safety. With the help of VT’s Fire Core doors with 90-minute fire-ratings, the safety requested by the DeSoto school district was met. VT’s Contribution: VT provided 161 doors for the new Katherine Johnson Magnet Technology Academy. A variety of doors were constructed for this project including: doors with fire-ratings of non-rated and 90-minutes, particleboard cores, 5-ply construction, structural composite lumber cores, and fire core. These doors feature a quarter sliced A grade cherry veneers, a clear finish, and controlled wood with a slip and balance match. Photos provided by -----
