THE MATCH-UP Washington travels to Kansas City to face the Chiefs in a regular season contest for the first time in a decade as the Redskins visit Arrowhead on Sunday. The Chiefs are 2-2 and are coming off their bye week, while Washington is 3-1 after suffering its first loss of the season, a 21-19 setback at Denver (10/9). After four games, the Chiefs have scored 91 points, the exact same total that the club has allowed. While the Redskins own one more victory than KC, all four of Washington’s games have been decided by three points or less. This week’s Chiefs-Redskins clash features a pair of NFL coaching adversaries who haven’t met on the gridiron since ’82. During that strike-shortened ’82 campaign, current Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil was in his seventh and final season at the helm of the Philadelphia Eagles, while current Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs was in his second year of his first tour of duty with Washington. Over two decades since their last meeting as NFC East foes, Vermeil and Gibbs are presiding over vastly different squads in 2005. The Chiefs strength is their high-powered offense that led the NFL in total offense for the first time in team history in 2004. KC is currently averaging 345.3 yards of total offense per game in 2005, 4.5 yards per game ahead of the club’s four-game pace from a year ago. Meanwhile, the strength of Washington’s squad is clearly its defense which currently ranks fifth in the NFL, permitting just 282.0 ypg. Much has changed since Washington’s last visit to Arrowhead in ’95 and even more has changed since the last meeting between the two squads in 2001. In ’95, a third-string QB named Trent Green was in his first season with the Redskins. Since coming to KC in 2001, Green has started 68 consecutive games for the Chiefs and owns the top passer rating (87.3) in franchise annals. On the defensive side of the ball, only three starters who opened in a 45-13 win at Washington (9/30/01) – DE Eric Hicks, DT John Browning and S Greg Wesley – will likely be in the starting lineup for this meeting with the Redskins. Up next for the Chiefs is a road trip to Miami (10/23), while the Redskins have a home date vs. San Francisco (10/23). THE SERIES The Chiefs own a 5-1 (.833) mark in regular season action vs. Washington, including a perfect 3-0 record in games played in Kansas City. The only Redskins regular season victory in the series was during Washington’s Super Bowl XVIII season when Kansas City suffered a 27-12 setback at R.F.K. Stadium (9/18/83). The Chiefs most recent win against the Redskins was a 45-13 decision at FedEx Field (9/30/01), marking Dick Vermeil’s first victory as Kansas City’s head coach. Washington’s most recent visit to Arrowhead resulted in a convincing 24-3 Chiefs victory (11/5/95). Kansas City also produced a 35-16 win in Washington’s initial regular season appearance at Arrowhead (11/15/92). The Red and Gold claimed a 27-20 victory at Municipal Stadium (10/25/71) in the first-ever meeting between the two franchises in ’71 in what was George Allen’s initial season as Washington’s head coach. The Chiefs also posted a 33-30 win at Washington (10/10/76). KC owns a 4-2 (.667) advantage vs. Washington in preseason games, including a 20-0 victory at Arrowhead (8/12/01), giving the Chiefs a 9-3 overall edge in the series. Those two preseason losses came at R.F.K. Stadium in ’77 and ’81. KC’s last contest of any sort at R.F.K. Stadium was a 17-14 preseason victory (8/12/94). KC SET TO HONOR GENERAL RICHARD MYERS The Chiefs will conduct a pregame ceremony on Sunday to honor Kansas City native General Richard Myers, who recently retired as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, marking the conclusion of a dedicated and distinguished military career. A longtime Chiefs fan, Myers is a graduate of both Shawnee Mission North HS and Kansas State University. Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, Kansas City (MO) Mayor Kay Barnes and Kansas State Athletic Director Tim Weiser will be on hand to join the Chiefs in celebrating the accomplishments of Myers. Interestingly, Myers’ appointment as the 15th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff came on October 1, 2001 – just one day after Kansas City’s 45-13 victory at Washington (9/30/01). *With St. Louis **With Kansas City REMEMBERING HANK STRAM (1923-2005)

This season the Chiefs are remembering Hank Stram, who passed away on July 4th, by wearing a helmet sticker with his initials during the entire 2005 campaign. A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2003, Stram served as the franchise’s head coach from 1960-74, compiling a 124-76-10 regular season record and a 5-3 playoff mark. He guided the club to three AFL titles and a win in Super Bowl IV. His many contributions to the game include the two-tight end offense, the stack defense and the moving pocket.

REMEMBERING P JERREL WILSON (1941-2005) The Chiefs also lost another link to their Super Bowl IV squad this off-

season when P Jerrel Wilson passed away on April 9th. Wilson served as the club’s punter from 1963-77 and still holds an NFL record by leading the league in punting four times (’65, ’68, ’72-73). A member of the AFL’s All-Time Team, he was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in ’88.

KC’S INTERCONFERENCE EDGE AT ARROWHEAD The Chiefs are tied for the NFL lead with a 17-4 (.810) record in

interconference games at home dating back to the ’95 season. KC’s overall 25-16 (.610) record against all NFC foes is the third-best mark in the league over that same span. The Chiefs domination of NFC opponents at Arrowhead has been remarkable. In 21 home contests against NFC foes since ’95, KC has outscored those opponents by a 630-to-351 margin, good for an average score of 30.0 to 16.7.

The only three NFC teams that have visited Arrowhead over the past decade and have claimed victories have been Carolina, Philadelphia and N.Y. Giants. The Panthers and Giants were both coming off Super Bowl appearances when they visited Arrowhead. The Eagles were en route to the first of four consecutive NFC Championship berths when they won in KC in 2001. In KC’s most recent interconference clash, the Eagles rallied from an 18-point deficit to register a 37-31 win at Arrowhead (10/2).

Chiefs High-Octane Offense Set to Square Off Against Stout Washington Defense by Pete Moris

KC Seeks to Keep Washington Winless at Arrowhead Washington is 0-2 in its two previous visits to Arrowhead in regular season action. Dallas (0-2) and Atlanta (0-4) are the only other teams that have played at least one regular season game at Arrowhead and are winless. The Ravens are the only team yet to play at Arrowhead. The Redskins have lost seven straight contests to AFC opponents and haven’t won a road game against an AFC foe since getting a 17-10 win at Denver (11/18/01). Washington is just 8-18 (.308) on the road dating back to the start of the 2002 campaign. KC is 16-5 (.762) in its last 21 home outings.

Chiefs Four-Game Report The Chiefs are 2-2 after four games. Dating back to the 2003 season,

23 of the 24 teams that have qualified for the playoffs have been 2-2 or better after four games. The only exception to that rule were the 2004 Packers, who began the year at 1-3. KC’s defense has shown improvement in a number of areas compared to the club’s four-game totals from 2004. Most notably, KC is permitting 2.5 fewer offensive points per game and 38.3 rushing yards per game fewer than it did in 2004.

QB Trent Green Set to Square Off Against Redskins Defense Chiefs QB Trent Green owns an 12-1 record at Arrowhead as KC’s

starter when he compiles a passer rating of 100.0 or better and owns 15 100.0+ rating games dating back to 2003. Green also owns 20 career 300-yard games with the Chiefs, the best mark in franchise history. KC is 6-1 at Arrowhead since 2002 when Green registers a 300-yard passing game. In his last 21 regular season starts at Arrowhead, Green has posted a 16-5 record, completing 424 of 635 passes (66.8%) for 5,232 yards with 35 TDs and just 14 INTs, good for a 101.2 rating.

Putting up big numbers will be difficult against one of the NFL’s best defensive units in Washington. The Redskins currently rank fifth in total defense (282.0 ypg) and are sixth in pass defense (178.3 ypg). However, the Redskins have lost 10 consecutive games dating back to 2000 when they have allowed an opposing QB to produce a rating of 100.0 or better.

Washington has gone 26 games without permitting a 300-yard passer, the second-longest active streak in the NFL. Here’s a look at at the longest active streaks without allowing a 300-yard passer and the last QB to do it against each of those squads. Chiefs QB Trent Green was the last signal caller to post a 300-yard outing against two of those teams. Green has 16,982 career passing yards with KC and needs 296 more to bypass QB Bill Kenney (17,277) for second in Chiefs history. Active NFL Streaks, Cons. Winning on the Road is Difficult with a Negative Turnover Ratio Winning on the road is never easy in the NFL, particularly with a

negative turnover ratio. This season, road teams that own a negative turnover mark own a 3-28 (.097) record. However, one of those wins was by Washington, which registered a 14-13 win at Dallas (9/19) despite a -2 turnover mark. The Redskins are 2-12 in road games with a negative turnover ratio dating back to 2001. Washington has been negative in six consecutive games and is -5 (2 takes/7 gives) on the season. The Redskins (-5), Patriots (-6) and Seahawks (-1) are the only three teams with negative turnover marks that currently own winning records. Only Houston (0) has fewer takeaways this season than Washington (2).

Kansas City is 38-4 (.902) at Arrowhead with a positive takeaway margin in regular season play dating back to ’95. The Chiefs own a +17 turnover differential (44 takes/27 gives) over their last 21 regular season home games. Overall, KC is 14-1 with a positive turnover mark dating back to 2003, including a streak of five consecutive wins.

Chiefs Rushing Offense vs. Redskins Rushing Defense Kansas City’s offense is averaging 135.3 rushing ypg, while

Washington’s defense is permitting just 103.8 rushing ypg. The Chiefs ground attack is even more potent at Arrowhead, where the club has averaged 141.6 rushing yards per game in its last 21 home contests.

The Chiefs are 10-3 in regular season play at Arrowhead when either Holmes or Johnson enjoys a 100-yard rushing game, including wins in eight of the club’s last nine such games. Washington is 1-18 (.523) when allowing an individual 100-yard rusher dating back to 2001. In fact, the Redskins have lost 14 consecutive games when allowing a 100-yard rusher dating back a game vs. Dallas (12/2/01). Broncos RB Tatum Bell had 127 ground yards in the Redskins 21-19 loss at Denver (10/9).

KC is tied for fourth in the NFL with 18 runs of 10+ yards, while Washington’s defense has allowed just six runs of 10+ yards, a mark that is tied as the lowest in the league. KC is 13-2 at Arrowhead when the club racks up 125+ team rushing yards dating back to the 2002 campaign. Over that same span, Washington is 2-15 when permitting an opposing team to register 125 or more team rushing yards. The magic number in the ground game for KC this week may be 150 yards. Washington has lost 18 consecutive games when its defense allows 150+ team rushing yards. Denver posted 165 team rushing yards against the Redskins last week.

KC is Hard to Stop When it Scores on the Ground at Arrowhead The Chiefs have won 13 consecutive home games dating back to

2002 when it has boasted a RB with two or more rushing TDs. RB Priest Holmes has accounted for 10 of those games, while RB Larry Johnson has boasted three such games. The Chiefs would like to continue that trend against a Redskins squad that is just 1-16 dating back to 2000 when it allows an opposing team to record two or more TDs, including last week’s loss at Denver. Washington’s only win in such a circumstance was a 33-31 victory at Atlanta (9/14/03). The Chiefs have registered at least one rushing TD in 17 consecutive victories dating back to 2003, the longest active streak in the league. KC has posted at least one rushing TD in nine of its last 10 games going back to the 2004 campaign.

Slowing Down Redskins RB Clinton Portis is a Priority Redskins RB Clinton Portis registered three 100-yard rushing games

in four appearances against the Chiefs as a member of the Broncos. In those four games, Portis totaled 81 carries for 559 yards (6.9 avg.) with 10 TDs, numbers that translate into an average of 139.8 yards and 2.5 TDs per game. Washington is 7-2 when producing a 100-yard rusher dating back to 2003, including wins in seven of the club’s last eight such games. The Redskins own a 6-1 record when Portis posts a 100-yard rushing game, suffering that loss when Portis had 103 yards at Denver (10/9).

Dating back to the 2002 campaign, KC owns a 13-3 record when holding opponents to under 100 team rushing yards. The Chiefs have gone nine consecutive games without permitting an opposing RB to register a 100-yard rushing day at Arrowhead. KC has allowed just 85 combined rushing yards in its first two home games of 2005.

Chiefs-Redskins Scoring Stats The Chiefs have outscored their opponents by an average score of

34.2 to 19.4 over their last 21 home games, good for an average winning margin of 14.8 ppg. KC has scored 30+ points in 13 of those 21 games (61.9%) and has averaged 39.7 ppg in its last seven home outings against NFC opponents. In total, the Chiefs are 24-4 at Arrowhead when scoring 30 points or more dating back to ’95. Dating back to the start of the 2002 campaign, no NFL team owns more 30-point games than the Chiefs (24).

Putting points on the board is typically difficult against the Redskins, who are fifth in the NFL, allowing just 14.5 ppg. Dating back to 2002, only Jacksonville (3) and the N.Y. Jets (6) have allowed fewer 30-point games than Washington (7). Although Washington is 1-6 in those games, they have gone 20 consecutive games without allowing an opponent to hit the 30-point barrier after suffering a 31-7 loss vs. Philadelphia (12/27/03).

Kansas City has won 16 consecutive games when holding opponents to 21 points or less dating back to a 17-16 win vs. Buffalo (11/17/02), a mark that ranks as the third-longest active streak in the league. The Chiefs have held 11 of their last 21 opponents at Arrowhead to 21 points or less. In fact, Kansas City is an incredible 42-2 (.955) at home dating back to ’95 when holding opponents under 20 points, including a 13-1 mark under Dick Vermeil. The Redskins have been held to 21 points or less in 18 of their 20 games since Joe Gibbs returned last season. Although Washington owns a 7-11 record in those contests, the Redskins haven’t topped the 21-point barrier yet in 2005, but are still 3-1.

Dante’s Inferno Continues to Burn WR Dante Hall owns 10 combined kick return TDs (punts or kicks) in

his NFL career, the third-highest highest total in NFL history. His six KO return TDs are tied for the most in NFL history. Hall has racked up his 10 total kick return TDs in just 70 games, meaning he averages one return score every seven games. Among players with at least six combined kick return TDs, only Detroit WR Eddie Drummond (4.8 games per TD) has a better average.

Six days after watching the Broncos jump out to a quick 17-0 lead, Kansas City was the team grabbing a 17-point lead before the visiting Eagles knew what hit them. The Chiefs would push their lead to 24-6 on a WR Dante Hall 96-yard kickoff return TD, but the rest was all Philadelphia as the Eagles stormed back to claim a 37-31 win at Arrowhead Stadium. QB Donovan McNabb threw for 369 yards and three TDs and Philadelphia converted four KC turnovers into 24 points en route to the victory. RB Priest Holmes got the Kansas City offense started on the Chiefs first drive, touching the ball on seven of the team’s nine plays scoring on a three-yard TD dive. A 38-yard field goal from Lawrence Tynes put KC up 10-0 late in the first quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, CB Dewayne Washington stripped Eagles return man CB Roderick Hood and rookie LB Kris Griffin jumped on the fumble at the Philadelphia 27-yard line. Six plays later QB Trent Green hit WR Eddie Kennison for an eight-yard TD pass as the Chiefs grabbed a 17-0 lead. Philadelphia finally cracked the scoreboard when CB Sheldon Brown intercepted Green and returned it 40 yards for a TD. The score remained 17-6 when the Eagles extra point try failed. Just when it looked like the Chiefs might be losing momentum, WR Dante Hall took the stage. On the ensuing kickoff, Hall raced to a 96-yard touchdown. Hall’s score gave KC a 24-6 lead and tied an NFL record with his sixth career kickoff return score. That was the last the Chiefs would see of the momentum. Looking to kill the clock just before halftime, the Chiefs suffered a costly turnover to shift the flow of the game. A fumble near midfield gave the Eagles the ball with 2:40 left before halftime. A McNabb-to-Owens seven-yard TD pass cashed in the turnover and gave Philadelphia life. The Chiefs defense held Eagles RB Brian Westbrook to just 15 yards in the game, but the McNabb-to-Owens combo was too much. Philadelphia got a 44-yard field goal before passes of 30 and 28 yards to Owens (11 catches for 171 yards) set up a three-yard TD pass to TE Mike Bartrum. The Eagles tied the game at 24-24 after a successful two-point conversion. The Eagles regained possession and rattled off a nine-play, 71-yard drive that resulted in the go-ahead 37-yard field goal. Trailing by three and still fighting, another Chiefs fumble handed the ball back to Philadelphia at the KC 25-yard line. McNabb would find TE L.J. Smith open in the end zone just moments later for a 34-24 lead in the middle of the fourth quarter. Philadelphia would add another field goal before the Chiefs offense added a late 15-yard TD pass to Hall to close within 37-31 with 1:24 remaining. When the Chiefs failed to recover the onside kick, the Eagles ran out the clock and clinched the victory.

GAME NOTES• RB Priest Holmes surpassed RB Ed Podolak (1,445) for the most career attempts from scrimmage (rushes and receptions) in Chiefs history.• WR Dante Hall registered his 10th combined kick return TD (kickoffs and punts), moving him into third in NFL history.• Hall’s eight kickoff returns and 234 kickoff return yards were both career highs, while his kickoff return yardage tally ranked as the third-highest single-game total in Chiefs history.

Playing in its first road contest of the season, Kansas City picked a perfect time to unleash the club’s high-powered offense. The Chiefs racked up the first regular season win under head coach Dick Vermeil in convincing fashion by a 45-13 margin. The contest also marked Kansas City’s first regular season meeting with the franchise’s former head coach, Marty Schottenheimer. QB Trent Green had a banner day, racking up an incredible passer rating of 154.3, just four points shy of a “perfect” 158.3 rating. He finished with 307 aerial yards on 21-of-26 passing (80.77%), to go along with three TDs. That opened up room for RB Priest Holmes to explode for 225 yards of total offense (147 rushing, 78 receiving) and three TDs. The contest was close deep into the first half when QB Tony Banks found WR Rod Gardner for a 26-yard TD to narrow the Chiefs advantage to 14-10. Kansas City then rattled off 14 points on a pair of Holmes TD runs in the final 1:24 of the half. The Chiefs final drive of the half covered 70 yards, but consisted of just three plays: a 27-yard Holmes run, a 19-yard pass to WR Chris Thomas and a 24-yard Holmes TD run to give the Chiefs a commanding 28-10 advantage at the half. Washington opened the second half with a 28-yard FG to cut the count to 28-13, but it would be as close as the Redskins would get. Kansas City answered with a nine-play, 75-yard march, which culminated in a three-yard TD pass from Green to TE Tony Gonzalez. After Washington went three-and-out on its next possession, Kansas City added a 33-yard K Todd Peterson FG to push the margin to 38-13. A three-yard Green-to-Thomas TD connection made the final count 45-13 in favor of KC. Those 45 points were the most Kansas City had scored on the road since a 47-27 win at New Orleans (9/8/85).

GAME NOTES• The Chiefs 32-point margin of victory was the club's largest since getting a 42-10 win vs. San Diego (9/17/00) and was the largest margin in a road game since a 40-3 win at San Diego (12/8/68).• Kansas City's 546 yards of total offense were the fifth-highest total in team history and the most since the club compiled 566 yards vs. Detroit (10/14/90).• Kansas City had a 300-yard passer (Trent Green - 307 yards) and a 100-yard rusher (Priest Holmes - 147 yards) in the same game for the first time since QB Steve DeBerg (331 yards) and RB Barry Word (112 yards) did it in a 37-7 win at New England (12/2/90).• QB Trent Green completed 21 of 26 passes, good for a completion percentage of 80.77, the second-best single-game mark in team history.
