Ruawai farmer and businessman, Greg Gent, has confirmed to the Lifestyler that he is considering standing for mayor in the upcoming local body elections after being approached by members of the Kaipara community.

Mr Gent is currently chairperson of Southern Cross Healthcare Group, FMG Insurance, Dairy Holdings and deputy chair of the Plant and Food Research Board. He says that great progress has been made in the Kaipara under the

commissioners and he would like to see that momentum continue.

Thirty-nine past and present Save the Children volunteers gathered to enjoy lunch at the Northern Wairoa Hotel. Now the Northern Wairoa Save the Children store has closed the organisation wanted to thank the volunteers for the work they have done in the shop. Northland branch president Aym Wade says it was a humbling experience to see the number of volunteers that have been involved over the years and she says the group will still be active amongst the local community.

Te Roroa Learning Assistance students were all smiles as they received their certificates on completing the Stepping Up and basic computing programmes. Students graduating from the course were mostly looking to upskill and keep their computer literacy up to date as well as add to their CV. “You have to know how to use computers in almost every aspect of life now and we are constantly updating our courses,” said manager Janet Te Rore.

A season of success by Ann Morgan

The Tatarariki Tennis Club’s junior programme had a successful season and coach David Cole says this is due to the commitment and support local schools have given to the sport.

“I have been coaching at schools in Dargaville for a few years and the momentum is building and the skills students are gaining are starting to show through,” said David.

“The encouragement they are getting to participate in tennis events from their schools has made it much easier for them.”

Junior tennis player Emma Pocklington has been playing since she was 12 years old.

“When she first tried the sport her natural talent saw her make the tennis excellence class in 2014. She received two hours of coaching once a week for a term. She then joined the Tatarariki Tennis Club and hasn’t looked back.

“Emma has the potential to go a long way. She is very talented at many sports and tennis is obviously one of her strong points. We have had 65 players aged between four and 18-years-

old at our club this season which is really encouraging.”

David’s daughters Stephanie, Victoria and Carolyn have been playing since they were old enough to pick up a racquet.

Carolyn has won several competitions including the Northern Wairoa year seven and eight girls’ doubles title back-to-back, partnering with Francie Godfrey.

Victoria and Emma won the Northland Secondary Schools Doubles Tournament and Victoria won the Northland 14-year-old girls Open. Stephanie won the Northland 16-year-old girls Closed and Open Tournaments.

“Owen Cleary won the Intermediate School tournament and Sela Maake is doing great too. Her only coaching is at school and she came fourth in the year seven and eight singles and was runner up in the Dargaville Primary School singles. It is encouraging to see the players doing so well.”

Dargaville resident Darlene Lang Gent will play an influential role in deciding how funds will be distributed to community groups throughout Northland following her appointment onto the Lottery Northland Community Committee.

She will sit alongside Dargaville farmer and presiding member Neil Clements, Peter Jensen, Patsy Thornton and Gwen Te Pania-Palmer.

Mrs Lang Gent was approached last year by the Department of Internal Affairs and was notified of her three-year ministerial appointment earlier this month.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what projects are going on in Northland and being able to help people achieve their goals by giving them funding,” she says.

Mrs Lang Gent says it will be a new experience on the other side of the process as she has previously applied for funding through the scheme as a community member.

Lottery Community funding is available for projects, activities, resources or services that have a community or social service focus and the board aims to connect communities and improve well-being and the quality of people’s lives.

Applications for the lottery funding scheme open in June and close in July and the board will meet in October to make their final decisions.

Celebrating 25 years by Ann Morgan

Jean Johnson from Ray White Dargaville is celebrating 25 years in the real estate industry, which has been her passion — helping clients into their own homes has been a pleasure to her.

“My real estate career started in East Auckland where I had owned a cake shop. We decided to move to Dargaville and I have enjoyed living my passion for real estate here,” said Jean.

Only four real estate agencies operated here when she first arrived.

“I wanted to provide open homes but that was not heard of so I organised signage and was the first in town to do open homes.

“Sale and purchase agreements were done by carbon copies in those days. There were no faxes or photo copiers where I worked at the time. Technology has changed so much and I am grateful to have young staff to keep things up to date for me.

“I love selling the old character buildings like the Lilac Villa on the way to Te Kopuru, the Kaihu Tavern, the Dargaville Post Office and the Northern Wairoa Hotel.

“I have had lots of fun and could write a book about all the experiences I have had over the years, including getting covered in fleas head to toe — they even got into my white sheepskin car

seat covers — and having goats get into my car which I couldn’t get out.

“I have loved every minute of my job and will be around for a few years yet.”

Jean has won many awards in real estate and says she could wallpaper a room with them.

To celebrate 25 years with Jean, list with Ray White Jean Johnson Realty Ltd and be in the draw for a weekend away to Paihia for two. Special conditions apply.

Competing for the Chatham Cup by Ayla Miller

The Northern Wairoa Senior Men’s Football team will play against University of Auckland at Memorial Park, Dargaville, as they compete for the first time in the Chatham Cup tournament to be held on Anzac Day.

Club president Allen Dennis says the team are feeling more confident about their skills, and as it is a home game and on Anzac Day, it will be an appropriate way to commemorate the fallen soldiers.

“The playing roster this year is quite strong and the team thought it would be a good goal to set,” he says.

“The senior men would like the experience of playing in the Chatham Cup at a higher level.”

Mr Dennis would like to encourage the community to come along and support their team and he is expecting spectators from Whangarei to travel across to show their cheer the team on as well.

“The club is growing this year in the junior ranks and they have three teams in the youth grade competitions home and away in Whangarei,” he says.

Coach Sam Green says the team are trying to make a footballing name for themselves.

“We are quite proud that we have been drawn at home against quite

The Northern Wairoa Senior Men’s Football team in training

a prestigious club and I think it is a chance for us to showcase ourselves not only as a team but as a club.”

The Chatham Cup has been running in New Zealand since 1923 as the equivalent of England’s FA Cup.

The trophy was gifted to the New Zealand Football Association by the crew of HMS Chatham to thank the New Zealand public for the great goodwill shown the sailors during their time in the country.

Development Board

Election talk kicks offcontinued from front page …

“To achieve that, I believe people who may have never thought of themselves as giving back via local government, should consider the option to stand.”

He says the greatest positive development over the past three years has been the reduction of the debt whilst maintaining adequate levels of services which has restored a huge amount of confidence.

To avoid the same issues as the previous elected council, Mr Gent says his focus would be to work on having an open and transparent council. He believes that the new council will need to think of innovative ways to stay accountable to ratepayers and retain their confidence.

“I think councillors need to have more accountability and fiscal responsibility. Progress will sometimes mean saying no until our financial base is solid and reliable.

“We are challenged in the Kaipara because we are a diverse community with varying economic factors at play across the district.”

He says a good leader is someone who empowers a group and gets the best out of people.

Elections will be held for the Kaipara District Council, Northland Regional Council and Northland District on

Greg Gent, Ruawai farmer and businessman, has started the conversation about the local body elections set for October this year

Saturday, October 8. Candidates must be nominated by two people who are on the electoral role for the area you wish them to stand for.

Nominations for the next local body elections open on July 15 and close on August 12.

Beach access ‘is protected’ by Ann Morgan

A group of Mangawhai residents, protesting the proposed removal of Te Arai beach car park to make way for development, has suggested the move will prevent public access to the coastline.

“It is an important part of our community. We are very concerned about the removal of the car park on Pacific Road as this is at the heart of the community,” said Save Te Arai chairman Aaron McConchie.

The group believe developers for the Te Uri o Hau coastal project are attempting to privatise a large part of Te Arai beach by relocating the car park inland.

This has been refuted by Te Uri o Hau. Chair of the iwi’s settlement trust Russell Kemp, says the car park is being shifted because it is currently located within the sensitive dune area which is part of the coastal reserve.

“We have worked to reposition it on our private land at our cost. We are building a walkway for people to access the beach along with other facilities for the public. By shifting a car park and installing a walkway, it

will be far more difficult for people to get trail bikes and 4WDs onto the beach.

“We have protected the entire Te Arai Beach frontage and other sensitive ecological areas for the community and achieved significant gains for the environment. Endangered shorebirds are doing much better.”

A walkway is planned for people to access Te Arai beach

A holiday near home Ann Morgan

Malcolm and Jo Roberts decided to take a mini break from their home in Mangawhai and visit Dargaville, keeping things local.

“We read in the Kaipara Lifestyler about the different tourism ventures in and around Dargaville, including the Dargaville Rail Cart Tours and thought we should go and see that side of the Kaipara for a change and go on the carts,” said Jo.

“We arrived the night before our tour to make the most of our trip and we stayed at the Commercial Bed and Breakfast on the river.

The couple say they had the added bonus of walking in on the Rivertown Singers group rehearsing at the Commercial.

“It was so lovely. I even ran into an old school friend. We shopped in town and really enjoyed visiting the Muddy Waters Gallery and took in other local sites.

“The rail carts topped the whole trip off, they were very well presented. Coming back to town from Tangowahine you get a different perspective of the area and see a lot of different things. It is not a case of repeating what you see on the way back. Having Dave

Selby and John Hansen as our guides and being local characters added to the experience. They gave us a lot of information and history of the area we travelled and the railway line. It was a very enjoyable experience.

“Malcolm and I both hope that the residents of Dargaville realise what good things they have on their own doorstep. They have one big advantage and that is the river and it would be good to see them use it to their best advantage.

“It was a lovely trip and we will be definitely back to visit.”

Showing they care by Ann Morgan

Team Med Heads from the Dargaville Medical Centre participated in the Shave for a Cure fundraising event last week and pulled out the clippers to remove their locks.

Carolyn McNabb, Jill Rahui, Sue Harris, Mandy Talijancich, Angela Bird and Te Aniwa Sullivan, raised more than $2,000. This meant team member Tana Iosefa joined because he promised if they hit their original target of $1,000 he would shave too.

“We are doing this in support of family, friends and colleagues we work with who have experienced or are experiencing the effects of cancer, and to encourage those who have lost or are losing their hair due to the treatment they receive,” said participant Jill Rahui.

“It is something very close to our hearts as we see what happens to those fighting the disease. Having our heads shaved is a very different experience. It certainly makes you look at life differently and even experiencing the looks you get walking down the street makes you realise what patients go through.

“Knowing we are supporting others who have not had the choice to lose

their hair makes it more important because we do have the choice. Losing hair is just one part of what those battling for their lives go through.”

Ms Rahui says people who have cut off all their locks in the past have said everyone needs to do it at least once.

Dargaville Hospital patient Gavin Dacombe joined the team and shaved his locks too but was unable to be in the photo.

“I did it to support them supporting us. I think they are very brave cutting all their hair off and it is for a good cause. If it helps just one person it is a very big deal. Good on them,” said Mr Dacombe.

Kaiwaka’s gigantic pumpkin by Ann Morgan

Kaiwaka School student Lincoln Morgan smashed all previous records at the annual school Giant Pumpkin Growing Competition this year with his ‘Big Boy’ entry which weighed in at 93 kilograms.

“The last record was 72 kilograms. It was a challenging season this year for the pumpkin growers with many unconfirmed and outrageous claims made, mainly by teachers, of pumpkins reaching prize-winning weights before exploding or rotting in the humid weather,” said principal Rosie Ellis.

“We have been running the competition for at least five years now. It was started by some keen parents who still run the event for us.”

The seeds are planted in Spring and the competition is held in April.

“The local vet supplies the scales for weighing and then we have the hill roll event. We see which pumpkin rolls the greatest distance and the seeds are then collected and saved to give to growers the following year. It is a great initiative and everyone really enjoys it.

“The children learn how to pollinate and look after the vegetables.

“There is a lot of care needed and it is not as easy as it looks. You need to figure out the best location for growth, have the correct water, sun and compost.

“It is an excellent learning activity. There are also other categories for the children to enter in such as the ‘Arty Farty’ dressed up pumpkin. The event is

Lincoln with the Kaiwaka School Pumpkin Trophy

sponsored by Jaques Four Square, Kauri Park Nurseries, Kaiwaka Cheese Shop, Buy the Way Boutique, Café Bianca and The Vet Centre.

“Seeds from Lincoln’s winning pumpkin will be distributed in Spring for this coming Summer’s budding Giant Pumpkin growers.”

New lead nurse by Ann Morgan

Hospice Kaipara Inc have welcomed lead clinical nurse Annette Olsen to the team. The area Annette will help cover is from the Waipoua Forest through to Pouto, Tangowahine Valley and Paparoa.

“My husband and I have moved home to Dargaville. I recently worked at Totara Hospice in South Auckland where I was for just over a year,” said Annette.

“Prior to that I was a district nurse. My experience includes living in the outback of Australia caring for the Aboriginal community.”

Annette says this was very different and exposed her to a different culture and way of life and was a unique experience.

“I am excited to be back in Dargaville and to be involved with Hospice Kaipara,” said Annette.

“My role involves interacting with patients and families once referrals have been received by Hospice. We are here to meet needs and give the

person the opportunity to live every moment to the best of their abilities.”

Annette will be at the annual Hospice Car Rally Poker Run on Sunday, May 15 in conjunction with the Dargaville Hotrod and Custom Car Club.

“We would like to see all types of custom, vintage and speciality vehicles on the rally. This year's route is really interesting and we are sure people will enjoy the ride.”

The rally starts at 12.15 noon at the Vintage Machinery Club Harding Park Dargaville. Prize giving will be at 5.30pm at the Northern Wairoa Hotel and there will be a cake cutting to celebrate the Dargaville Hospice Shop’s 10th birthday.

A cultural celebration by Ann Morgan

Otamatea High School hosted the Te Tai Tokerau Festival 2016 last week, showcasing the kapa haka talents of youth from 30 schools participating in the event which coincided with the school’s 50 year celebrations.

“The theme was kaitiakitanga or guardianship. Safeguarding our three official languages: Te reo Maori, New Zealand English and New Zealand Sign Language; protecting our land and sea as a zero waste event and also caring for people with various educational health and sporting advice on site.” said teacher Thomaseena Paul.

“The staff, students and community all jumped aboard the waka and ensured that the

kapa haka festival highlighted the might of our local community. The school field was alive with people who were enjoying the day and participating in Maori games, family entertainment, food and information stalls.

“After months of planning and work preparing for the festival, Otamatea High School is proud of the result of the innovations that we implemented.”

She said safeguarding the Te reo language was

promoted through the engaging of bilingual MCs and sign language interpreters.

They protected the land through the zero waste initiative and the people through the promotion of good health and educational planning.

“The festival was a fantastic way of unifying all facets of our community and we would like to thank our sponsors for supporting the kaupapa and powering the waka.”

IS YOUR CAR READY FOR WINTER?Get prepared with your local experts

Welcome to WellsfordWelcome to WellsfordRock out and read in the library by Rose Stirling

If you’ve ever wanted to break the rules and make a bit of noise at your local library — now is your chance.

Wellsford War Memorial Library is opening its doors to musicians next month and they’re hoping it will draw in a crowd as well.

Wellsford Library manager Megan Livick says they wanted to do something to celebrate New Zealand Music Month, so librarian Gene Nicolson came up with the idea to invite local musicians to play.

Megan says it’s about getting the community engaged with the library and so far they’ve had two local groups come forward to say they will perform on separate Saturday mornings to coincide with the adjacent markets, but she welcomes more.

“We certainly invite others to come forward. I think libraries are becoming a real community space now and are allowing members to use the space as a place to showcase their talents.”

She says musicians will be able to choose between playing in the lounge area of the library, where she says there is a nice ambience, or outdoors.

For more information: 09 423 7702.

Students set goalsChildren in Wellsford tested their endurance and perseverance during Wellsford School’s Try-athlon.

The event has been running for three years and focuses on personal challenge rather than competing against others.

Sixty year-zero to -one children completed a 400m run, 300m bike and a 15m swim whilst 100 year-two to -four children completed a 1,200m bike, 400m run and a 150m swim.

“As part of our health and physical education curriculum, we have been learning about having active lifestyles and setting goals. At our school we are lucky enough to have a 20-metre solar-heated pool and a large bike track, with a set of school bikes,” said teacher Ngadia Jones. “We have

Wellsford students were encouraged to challenge themselves at their school Try-athlon

been proud of our students seeing what they can achieve and putting themselves out of their comfort zone, but enjoying themselves at the same time.”

HEAVY PERIODS?Are your periods restricting your life or leaving you feeling washed out?

Did you know that there are options for treatment other than pills or a hysterectomy?

There are treatments available that require no anaesthetic or only a minor hospital, procedure that usually dramatically improve periods without the risks and complications of major surgery.

Riverside Women’s Healthcare is a full time private gynaecology clinic run by women for women with these types of problems. Dr. Rachel Moss is a specialist gynaecologist who can discuss with you whether these options would be suitable for you so you can decide if you want to get your life back. If a hysterectomy is require there are new techniques that make it safer and less painful.
