Andy gets connected

Volunteers for life

Students and staff at Ruawai College recently dressed up as their favourite film characters as the culmination of a week of events to mark International Literacy Week. Among them was year nine student, Joel Bickers, 13, who made his own SpongeBob costume.

Andy Daly of Greenways Trust in Dargaville did not know when he filled out a recent Department of Conservation survey while working on the trust’s stall at the Riverside Markets, that he would hit the jackpot.

DOC community relations manager Darren Jones was on hand to present Andy with his lucky dip prize of a new iPad for taking part in the survey, which was aimed at identifying conservation issues around the Kaipara.

Collapse hits local businesses“We had just taken over and

saw the long-term guests as a great boost to the start of our new venture.

We provided accommodation and food and even let them hire a commercial rubbish skip under the hotel name.”

Mr Collins says Blacktop paid the first month, but only after the hotel demanded settlement of the outstanding bill when it became obvious something was wrong.

“They paid for the April to May part, but we are still owed for the rest.”

Receiver Brian Mayo-Smith from accounting firm BDO said it was too early to say whether Blacktop’s creditors will be paid. “We were only appointed last week. It’s still early days. We’re still assessing individual contracts.”

However, the Kaipara businesses are unsecured creditors. Under the law they rank behind secured creditors, employees and the IRD for payment.

Another Dargaville business owner who did not want to be identified said he was owed a similar amount by Blacktop, but he was not confident of seeing any money soon.

Kaipara District Council Community Engagement Manager, Barbara Ware, says Blacktop was awarded its reseal contract in 2011/2012. The contract was then rolled over for 2012/2013.She says the council was unaware that Blacktop was in financial difficulty, but even if it had been, there was little it could do about it. “Any business must decide how much debt it is prepared to

incur before saying enough is enough. It is unfortunate that the trust of local businesses has been used and — it now appears abused — in the way it has.”

In early July Kaipara District Council announced it had awarded a two-year $14 million contract for all its road maintenance — including resealing — to Australian company Transfield Services Ltd.

Blacktop did not tender for the contract. Spokesman David Jamieson says Transfield has no contractual relationship with Blacktop.

Kauri museum strikes goldQuiet achievers do it againThe Kauri Museum in Matakohe has been recognised as one of the country’s leading tourism ventures for environmental performance, achieving the prestigious Qualmark Enviro Gold rating.

A large group of well-wishers gathered at the Otamatea Community Services Centre to celebrate the 10th anniversary and to see the latest addition the facility has added to its already extensive repertoire of services.

A new computer training facility, a joint venture between Te Roroa Learning Assistance in Dargaville, and the Maungaturoto based centre was launched, with Te Roroa Learning Assistance administrator Stephanie Spraggon and tutor Linda Cowbourne on hand to help students start their training.

Centre Manager Denise Meiklejohn says for those seeking often vital employment skills, the nearest training facility is in Whangarei, which is why pre-employment computer training became an item on the agency’s strategic plan.

Qualmark is the official accreditation standard issued by the tourism industry and the Kauri Museum has been Qualmark endorsed since 2000.

The museum’s chief executive officer Betty Nelley, says achieving the accreditation was a personal goal and she feels very proud.

“Our philosophy around the environment is that we wish to leave the world a better place for our grandchildren. We believe we demonstrate environmental excellence, integrity and best practice, and that belief has been formally endorsed.”

Owned by a charitable trust, the museum is funded entirely by its visitors and is Northland’s largest covered attraction with more than 4,500m2 of display around the Kauri  industry. Qualmark General Manager Tim Keeling says any

business receiving a gold rating has to exceed Qualmark’s standards for environmental and social responsibility as well as showing strong leadership and advocacy.

“The Kauri Museum underwent a comprehensive on-site evaluation around areas of waste management, energy efficiency, environmental management and community support, so to achieve this rating is no mean feat — it takes time, dedication and commitment, things the museum has in spades.

“Each of Qualmark’s quality criteria has been developed in collaboration with the tourism industry making it a quality assurance system by the industry, for the industry.”

three weeks solid work, we were able to turn it into a great new space for computer training.”

Denise says the second-hand computers were kindly donated by BNZ at Dargaville and Warkworth, and volunteer experts Noel, and Steven Smith donated their time and considerable expertise to set up eight training stations in the new classroom.

“The free, 100 hours of training is comprehensive and we have eight students doing hours on Mondays and Thursdays and eight others doing just one session, depending on what suits them as not everyone can do the same hours each week.”

Denise says the centre is also working on offering computing for seniors and another course concept that is proving very popular with seniors, understanding mobile phones.

Old skaters try out new park

by Colin Patterson

A group of avid Dargaville skateboarders who originally helped get the idea of a skate park in Dargaville off the ground, came together over the weekend to celebrate their dream becoming reality.

A number of the dozen or so old crew have moved out of town. But the chance to skate at the park they first envisaged was just too good an opportunity to turn down.

Jesse Stuck, who is now a builder in Queenstown, and Joseph Gallagher, now living in Auckland, made the trip to their hometown to meet up with old friends and take on the challenges of their creation.

“It was a chance to skate it thoroughly and work out all the ins and outs,” said Greer Mackay, one of those who took part. “The skate park’s standing up well to the test.”

He says it was all-on on both Friday and Saturday as the old dogs spent both days trying all their tricks.” We skated non-stop for eight hours a day. Fortunately there were no broken bones.”

The skate park officially opened four weeks ago and since then has been in constant use. “The skate park fills a gap. It’s pretty popular — there are so many children. You’ve got to pick your time of the day.”

The Laughing Jamaicans won the top prize, plus awards for audience vote and best secondary school entrant in the Dargaville Community Cinema Charitable Trust Fourth Short Film Competition held recently at the Anzac Theatre. The Laughing Jamaicans were also last year’s overall winner.

Dylan Hansen from The Laughing Jamaicans said his group of media studies students had borrowed equipment from school and had filmed their eight-minute piece Legend Busters II in one weekend.

He says the group worked as a team, with everyone performing both in front and behind the camera. “I like doing it all but usually I end up directing.”

Fellow Laughing Jamaican Ethan Gorrie said it was cool seeing what he and fellow team members had come up with on the big screen. “I like to show people what we can do.”

He said the group usually filmed from a script — but not always. “Sometimes something comes into our heads. We decide we want to film it and see what happens.”

The 11 members of the group are all in their final year at Dargaville High school and most are likely to move away to pursue tertiary study. Dylan says they would like to continue making movies. “We’ll just have to see what happens.”

The Laughing Jamaicans won $300 cash for top prize, $150 for audience choice and $100 for best secondary school. Dylan says they are likely to use their winnings to buy a film camera.

Nikolai Puharich won the primary school category. Other winners — each winning a signed book from Oscar winner Sir Richard Taylor — were Daniel Wade

Book favourites come to life by Alan Wheatley

by Alan Wheatley

Students and staff at Dargaville Primary School assumed some amazing alter-egos for the grand finale of book week, dressing up as their best-loved book characters.

First cab off the rank was an impressive lineup of Room 16 students, led by Mouseketeer teacher Natasha Smith.

This was followed by an equally impressive line up of comic book and historical characters, fairy tale creatures and a good sprinkling of the usual villains and aliens.

Principal Alan Russek said one of the aims of book week is to increase the awareness among students of the joy of reading and to introduce them to the variety of books available.

“Parents and whanau were invited to purchase new books from the display at the school library and then donate them, thus helping increase the library’s choice and range. Their child’s name is entered inside the cover.”

The week of events was enhanced with visits by children’s author Mark Sommerset, MORE FM breakfast hosts Angela “Flash” Gordon and John Markby and members of the Taniwhas rugby team who met students and read books with them.

Information on help for disabledA meeting is to be held in Dargaville on Friday with the aim of setting up a support structure to enable young people in the Kaipara area with various disabilities to better access resources and improve communication.

Organised by Whangarei based primary disability resource centre Northable, the meeting will be hosted by The Cube, the organisation’s youth wing. All the members of The Cube are themselves disabled.

Client services manager for Northable, Shirley Harvey says the aim of the meeting is to set up a hub in Dargaville to join with others, linking back to the Whangarei centre.

“We have been approached by a lot of Kaipara families who tell us of the lack of services for disabled people and caregivers, so we are holding this meeting to actually hear from the people who need our help the most.”

Ms Harvey says if help can be provided around the needs of the area’s disabled people then the effects can be widespread.

“People will not be so inclined to move away from the area to seek the support they need and we can also reach out to a lot of young disabled people we know sometimes leave school and then simply sit at home with nothing to do.”

She said Northable does not yet know exactly how many people there could be in the area who need support and the meeting’s primary aim will be to find out.

The meeting will be at the Dargaville Town Hall this Friday 20th September from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

Students from Room 16 of Dargaville Primary School head the parade of book character dress-ups, in the grand finale of book week, led by teacher Natasha Smith

The life bloodof the communityThere was a steady stream of donors when the NZ Blood Service set up shop at the Dargaville Town Hall.

by Alan Wheatley

On hand making his 50th donation, was Ruawai farmer Allan Smith, who has been giving blood for the past 40 years.

“I started donating when I was 17 and just seem to have kept on doing it since, in the Manawatu and for a while over in Hawkes Bay and now here.”

Allan gave the standard 470mm of ‘O’ positive type blood, which nurse Amy Lerke said was the most common.

“Because of that, we constantly need a lot of it. Luckily around 38 per cent of

donors are O positive, but the next most common type is A positive, and we see plenty of those too.”

First time donors must be over 16 and under 65, but regular donors can donate until age 76 providing they have an annual medical check.

The service collects on average around 90 units a day and Dargaville was right on target to deliver its share.

To mark Allan’s 50th donation, the service presented him with a commemorative bag.

No kitchen nightmares for Brad by Colin Patterson

Aspiring Ruawai chef Brad James has been cooking up a storm at one of the country’s most exclusive resorts.

Brad, 18, a Year 13 student at Ruawai College, last month spent a week at Hanmer Springs’ Heritage Hotel working in the hotel’s kitchen. It all came about through the college’s Gateway Programme which gives senior students a chance to gain experience in occupations they hope to make their careers.

Brad says the college’s Gateway co-ordinator wrote to the hotel which agreed to take him. He worked Monday to Friday from 2pm to 10pm doing preparation and service for dinner, while on the Friday he did breakfast and lunch.

“I thought it was going to be hard. The hotel was four-and-a-half stars. But I got into the work straight away. Every time I got a new recipe they would teach me how to do it.”

It was tough achieving the hotel’s high food preparation standards. But Brad enjoyed the experience. “It was awesome. It was a good challenge and it was fun.”

Brad has been doing hospitality ever since he arrived at Ruawai College halfway through year 10. But his interest in cooking began much earlier.

“I’ve always been interested in food — both making it and eating it. I like cooking all types of pasta and enjoy doing seafood now and again.”

Ruawai College student Brad James who spent a week cooking at the exclusive Hanmer Springs Heritage Hotel

Last year he realised that food could provide a career. “I realised I was relatively good at what I was doing. I was able to put nice food on the table.”

Brad has been accepted as a trainee chef with the Navy and will leave for Devonport as soon as he finishes his final year at Ruawai College.

“I’ll be based at Devonport for 13 weeks. Then I’ll be expected to cook on large ships for up to 200 people.”

He says he owes a big debt of gratitude. “The college has really helped me in my career. My hospitality teachers have really helped me with direction and in helping me decide what I want to do and where I want to go.”

Welcome new wheels for Linking Hands by Alan Wheatley

The charitable organisation Linking Hands, based in Maungaturoto has taken delivery of a new shuttle van to further enhance their service and to retire the current long-serving vehicle.

Linking Hands is a free community health shuttle run by donations, and covers Maungaturoto, Mangawhai and Ruakaka covering a large part of the rural Kaipara area that has no public transport.

The new vehicle — a 2007 Nissan Caravan — was made possible by many local donations, one of which came from the Maungaturoto & Districts Rotary Club with other funding coming from as far afield as Auckland.

Linking Hands Maungaturoto manager, Jayne King says the new vehicle which also has a wheelchair hoist, replaces the high mileage six year old former van, which she says was well past its projected three year use by date.

“We have five vehicles across our three centres at Maungaturoto, Mangawhai and Ruakaka and the new van means we can continue to ferry clients to health related appointments they would otherwise find hard to meet.”

Meet their little brother!

The scorching hot Fiesta ST is here, burning a hole in the tarmac at Dargaville Ford.

Sierra Cosworth • GT40 • AC Cobra…

Come and see the car which top motoring journos rate as one of Ford’s best!

For only$34,990

+orC

Hot hatch with extra chilliWhen Ford wanted to promote their new Fiesta ST hot hatchback, they could have ordered promotional stickers, t-shirts, or even novelty ballpoint pens.

Instead, the tuned, sharpened and spiced-up version of the popular little Ford was marketed with complimentary bottles of master-crafted hot chilli sauce. A more apt metaphor has rarely been presented — and just looking at the car you get some hint as to why.

Aggressive, slippery surfaces confront you at all angles, from the hex-mesh front grille all the way up a bonnet which has a hint of Aston about it (in the right light) and back to a hatch-top spoiler which, on this car, is more than just fiberglass jewellery.

That the friendly little Fiesta could look so mean is one thing, but the interior is something else again.

Black leather, chrome dials backlit in red, racing seats which grip like those of a fighter plane — one begins to get the impression that Ford's designers may have thought that they were working on the new Mustang, not a diminutively sized hatchback.

The engine is quiet, too, which only serves to lull the first time driver into a sense of security.

Because all that racing style is far from cosmetic.

This tiny car generates close to 180 horsepower, and that's before the overboost kicks in.

Then both HP and foot-pounds of torque crack the 200 mark, and you begin to feel grateful for those Recaro seats.

It's not all power and no finesse either. Ford have laboured mightily to make the ST a fitting companion on the roll of honour next to the Escort Cosworth and RS200, and every corner

you carve through puts a smile on your face. The ride is sporty and firm, with the suspension and chassis setup geared toward making each drive as much fun as possible.

On a recent television appearance, the Fiesta ST monstered two French rivals around a certain famous airfield race track.

And while most New Zealand buyers will be more likely to head down to the shops in their new ST than down to the chequered flag, a little of that energy and verve is sure to be injected into every drive when behind the wheel of this deservingly-titled hot hatch.

This tiny car generates close to 180 horsepower, and that’s before the overboost kicks in

Solar energy on the waterSolar power is no longer seen as a future technology, cautiously adopted by those ahead of the alternative-power curve. Instead, using the limitless power of the sun has gone mainstream, with big benefits for those unable to plug in to a convenient wall socket.

This is especially true for those who are far away from the national grid — campers, hunters and boaties among them. Out on the water a host of new electrically powered gadgets exist to make a day’s fishing more pleasurable and more successful, and a steady, free supply of 12 volt power is a godsend for those who want to run a truly high-tech ship.

Fish finders, fridges, and the all important safety and navigation systems of a modern vessel all require electricity, and traditional battery systems powered by a feed from the engine can bleed precious fuel at a time when the cost of operating a boat is a major concern. The answer is modern solar cells, able to be easily fitted with the development of a new and ingenious idea.

Most pleasure craft have a superabundance of rod holders, many of which are unused on even the biggest fishing trip. Rather than mounting solar panels permanently to the roof of the boat, the new mounting system by

by Andy Bryenton

Powertrain enables boaties to connect powerful solar panels — up to 20 watts — direct into their rod holders. They can be installed and removed easily, taken down over the winter and set up in a snap for summer.

Locally, this ingenious new system is available from the marine electrical specialists at VOS — and it’s so good that business owner Mark Vuletich has just installed a set on his own boat! With a steady supply of free power, this tech innovation is just the ticket for today’s gadget-intensive modern boatie.

Rangers on parade

Dargaville Ford's Ranger Re-Union night was a roaring success, with models of the popular ute travelling from as far away as Albany and the far north to join in the fun. The Ranger seems poised to take over as New Zealand's favourite ute, and the vehicles visiting Lindsay West's dealership came in all designs and from all walks of life, including farm trucks, a camper and some seriously kitted out custom machines.

One very lucky man! by Alan Wheatley

Rodney Wilson’s business is open again after being closed for nearly four months, but he’s lucky to be back on the job.

On Mother’s Day, Rodney says he was cutting firewood on his home bench saw, when he turned around to grab another mill slab, and accidentally brushed the back of his hand over the spinning blade.

“It was quick and it was brutal. Even though there was not a lot of blood, I knew I’d done something pretty bad. I went up to the medical centre and they anaesthetised my hand, gave me painkillers, bandaged it up, and then I drove to Whangarei.”

Five hours of microsurgery at Whangarei hospital followed, reattaching severed tendons and resetting fractured bones, and his left hand was back together, but Rodney said it was far from good.

“It was in a cast for ten days and really sore. Four months later, I still only have about 50 per cent use of it, but I am glad to have five fingers still.”

Rodney — who runs Dargaville Diesel — said his business has been effectively closed since the accident, but he is up and running again and says he hopes the physiotherapist’s predictions

of eventually having full use of his hand will be accurate.

“I’ve been cutting firewood for 20 years and never had any problem, but it happened so quickly. It’s a real lesson in safety and I have since added a full safety guard to the saw so there’s no way it’ll happen again. I was lucky and also lucky I was not left-handed.”

More leaders needed for St JohnSt John is calling for more leaders to help run its activities for its Maungaturoto youth division.

Maungaturoto divisional manager Jodie Horsford said they currently had three leaders but desperately need another two.

She says St John in Maungaturoto operates four groups that meet weekly. The first group is the Penguins for youngsters aged from six to eight. The kids do hobbies and learn about healthy living and basic first aid. The Penguins are followed by Green, Blue and Gold groups for older age brackets.

Ms Horsford says youngsters and teens in St John learn essential life skills and make new friends. They undertake many activities including

going on camps. But to that they need guidance from adult leaders.

“We want people who are passionate for youth and the community. They need to know how to interact with kids.”

Potential leaders should not be put off if they feel they do not know it all. “We can put them on a leadership development course. They can do a first aid course. And we provide support and assistance, especially with programme planning.”

If you can help or would like more information call Ms Horsford on 09 431 9090 or go to www.stjohn.org.nz

Former hostelmanager looks back by Colin Patterson

A former manager of Dargaville High School’s student hostel is disappointed it is closing but says she understands why.

“It is a sign of the times,” says Sharon Hunter who was hostel manager from 1991 to 1997. “I understand why. But the closure means the hostel is no longer an option that is available to kids in the region.”

When Mrs Hunter managed the hostel it had 30-plus kids in residence during the week. But lengthening of school bus runs mean many of these students can now commute each day and that reduced the demand for hostel places. The hostel currently has just six residents and is no longer financially viable.

When she became manager Mrs Hunter was the first ex-teacher in that role. “My job was to feed and house the kids and make sure they did their study. I ran the place like my own home. Parents were giving me their most precious possession — their children. I was responsible and I took my responsibility seriously.”

While most students were good, some misbehaved and got into

trouble. “The first time I saw the inside of a police station was when a kid went out stealing at 2am. I’ve also had kids who did shoplifting.”

However most students respected Mrs Hunter’s firm leadership. “My hours were from 7am to 7pm. At 7pm I went off duty and went home to one of the school houses. It was a five-day hostel, so I always had my weekends free. It was an amazing lifestyle.”

Mrs Hunter says good food was important. “I had amazing cooks and I helped with the menus. At the time I had two teenagers and I knew what they ate. Hostels run on their food and if you give the students — especially the boys — good food you keep them happy.”

Mrs Hunter’s time as manager ended when she and her husband bought a farm just outside Dargaville and she returned to teaching. But she has no regrets about her time as hostel manager. “I had some amazing times and met kids who have become lifelong friends.”

SPACE — Supporting Parents Alongside Children’s Education — has run in Whangarei for the last 10 years. “We’ve tried to get it to Kaipara for a long time. We’ve finally succeeded,” says SPACE co-ordinator Wendy Kain.

Ms Kain says the programme is set to begin at Dargaville Playcentre on Ranfurly Rd at 10am on Tuesday October 15.

“SPACE is a programme for first-time parents — not just mums. It’s more of an adult programme focussing

on education and learning about your child’s  development.” She says the programme has at least 30 sessions held every Tuesday morning. “We set a topic and then we make arts and crafts related to that. Sometimes we have a specialist guest speaker.”

She says SPACE is limited to 15 babies and is filling up fast. Bookings are essential.

Contact Ms Kain on 09 438 2155 or [email protected]. A donation of $3 per weekly session helps meet the cost of materials.

Lions seek help for projects SPACE helps new Dargaville parents

Dargaville’s two Lions clubs are looking for people interested in the community to join and help them with a range of projects. A programme that helps new parents and their babies

cope better with changes in their lives is coming to the Kaipara district.Northern Wairoa Lions

President Jean Johnson says the club has 20 members, but would like more.

“We want women who enjoy getting out and doing things for the community.

“We raise money for child cancer and breast cancer. We’ve donated money to the volunteer fire brigade. And we’ve talked to the Norfolk Court retirement home about helping them out in varying ways.”

Mrs Johnson says the club is also preparing for its Antiques and Collectors Afternoon on Sunday October 13. The event is similar to the television programme Antiques Roadshow. “You can bring your items along for viewing or sale.”

Antiques expert Louise Allpress will be along to provide her appraisal. However, anyone with items they would like to display and sell needs to book by October 8. For further information contact Mrs Johnson on 09 439 7575.

Dargaville Lions secretary Warren Osbaldiston says his club will be

working with Northern Wairoa Lions to organise the Dargaville Christmas parade, scheduled for the first Saturday in December.

The club is also producing a local phone directory for all 439 numbers in the area from Ruawai to

Waipoua Forest. A publication date depends on

finding enough advertisers to cover costs, plus the time it takes to check every entry to ensure there are no errors.

Mr Osbaldiston says Dargaville Lions has provided more than $5,000 to assist the Anzac Theatre. The club is also collecting for its annual auction.

“It’ll happen when our auction room is full.”

He says the club is happy to take any saleable goods, such as furniture or artwork. He says anyone with items they’d like to donate should call Ron Morgan on 09 439 4040.

Dargaville Lions has 29 members. “We’re getting a few young members. That’s very pleasing.”

Jean Johnson

Parents can become better parents by enrolling in the SPACE programme which is about to kick off in Dargaville
