“It would be a million dollar project if it was being paid for in hard cash, but its completion will be the sum of a huge amount of time and effort on a voluntary basis,” said the chairman of the 150th Years Up Committee, Albie Paton.

“Basically we and the Residents Association are looking at improvements and beauti� cation from Bickerstaffe Road, then throughout the town. A key component of the huge project will be the reconstruction of the old wharf on the Wairau Creek at Bickerstaffe Road where the original settlers landed. Today, just old pilings remain at what later became a town dump site.”

There has been a joint meeting with the Northland Regional and Kaipara District Councils with a positive response to the plan and resource consents are being applied for.

“We plan to clean up and beautify the old dump site as a small park which will join on a walkway through the Maungaturoto Country Club. We wish to leave a wharf structure that can be used by children � shing and a launching place for kayaks and sailing dinghies,” Mr Paton added.

The committee and residents’ association hope � nances will be boosted by sales of ‘planks’ at $200 to individuals, families or groups to get the wharf and park project underway.

Plans for the makeover of Maungaturoto have been overseen by local concept designer, Richard Moore and his wife, Diana.

rocks, stones, plants, trees, cement.” Hopefully we can sell 100 planks and we are also looking for offers of help with labour, machinery, tools — anything that will help. From the park, as a second and third stage, we would like to extend the walkway along the edge of the mangroves to the bottom of Judd Road. Stage three, if funding allows, would be a bridge over the creek from Davis Landing and a path to join up with the walkway at the sewage ponds.

In the town proper, a huge spruce up is planned, with landscaping. Planting and painting running from the Gas service station through to the Caltex station.

The 150th celebrations are set for November next year.

Dargaville Theatre debuts hot new materialLocal playwright Deborah Steele’s new musical is called ‘Material Girls’ — a name borrowed from Madonna’s chart-topping hit of the 1980s. And the feel-good story of an all-girl band during the decade of hairspray, � uorescent tiger print and neon captures the upbeat tone of 1980s pop, weaving a top-twenty medley of familiar songs into a tale of ambition, talent and triumph

some amazing 80s-era costumes and a list of stand-out characters (including a megalomaniac fashion designer, a very worried band manager, and a dad so uncool he’s almost hypnotic).

While all cannot be revealed regarding the plot for reasons of artistic impact, those who come to see Material Girls should be prepared for an interesting twist after the intermission, as well as cameo appearances by local entertainers. And unlike some 80s pop stars, the cast of Material Girls really sing — this is no lip-synch fakery!

Northland Hunt has last week marked its 60th Jubilee. With most horse sports � nished until spring the hunting season is just beginning with horses and riders charging around the countryside after the hounds until the season � nishes in late July

Riders from all over the country have taken part in a full week of hunting, from locations in the Bay of Islands, Whangarei and two hunts in the Dargaville area, � nishing off the week with a social evening and joined by 80 visitors. Northland Hunt was also acknowledged at the recent Dargaville races after kindly having one of the races named after their 60th Jubilee.

“We have 60 senior members with the youngest this year being 10 years old and the oldest 88 years old, who we believe may be the oldest actively hunting member in New Zealand,” said Master of the hunt, Andrew Duff.

“It is a great family orientated sport that is non-competitive; we have a friendly group of members that help each other out while having a good camaraderie.

“Each hunt gives you the opportunity to ride across farm land that is not often seen by the public and with Northland Hunt averaging 40 hunts a season from Kerikeri Peninsula to Pouto,” said Andrew.

Students soon to be enjoying high speed broadband

Schools, hospitals, and libraries in Kaipara and throughout Northland will be connected to faster broadband in the � nal phase of the government’s $300 million Rural Broadband Initiative, released last week.

Across the country, 193 provincial schools, 183 rural public libraries, 37 rural hospitals and 10 Health Centres will be receiving ultra-fast broadband � bre connections of up to 100 megabits per second.

In Kaipara, schools to be connected include St Joseph’s, Dargaville High, Dargaville Intermediate, Dargaville Primary, Mangawhai Beach, and Maungaturoto as well as Dargaville

Hospital. Libraries include Mangawhai, Dargaville, Ruawai, Maungaturoto and Paparoa.

“Many of the schools have relied on satellite broadband and have managed with small data caps and low speeds,” says Northland MP Mike Sabin.

“The announcement ensures that rural communities will be well connected with the latest technology. This will break down the barriers of distance that rural communities face. Students will be able to video conference with specialist teachers, doctors and nurses will be connected to training sessions in big cities, and communities will have access to information and job-seeking tools through broadband in public libraries.”

“The weather was mostly good, it all went well and we are really pleased with our latest Crank–up Day,” says Vintage Machinery Club treasurer, Mrs. Ann Lupton. “Numbers were up on last year. Quite a few young ones came for a look and they seemed really interested in the butter making and the bread making. Butter maker Pamela Parkinson let some of them have a try at turning the churn handle. The miniature horses with their dressage and little carts were excellent. They carried out a simulated rescue that was a lot of fun”

Among other interesting activities was a ‘rag rug’ making display and Ann noticed how that brought back memories for many older people. There was a display by the Dargaville Camera Club, nineteen classic cars were on show for the men to drool over and ‘Doug the Digger’ strutted his stuff.

“A shearing plant powered by a bicycle caused a lot of action. A local lad managed to pedal long enough for the shearer to shear a sheep. Others tried but couldn’t pedal long enough. And over at the camp oven Keith

Maungaturoto setlers found solid ground after harrowing journeys of two weeksor more from Auckland.

Settlement records echo the feelings of exploration I was experiencing.

‘Embarked upon the whaleboat, the party commenced a veritable voyage of discovery,’ wrote the authors of The Albertlanders book.

‘Neither master or man seemed to have any idea of the location of the place (Mangaturoto), beyond that it was near the head of the Wairau Stream. The course zig-zagged; the boatmen being new to the river, after poking about in every bay and indentation along the way, � nally bumped hard aground’.

The settlers spent the night as the tide receded and left them high and dry. The next day they set off again.

‘Presently the river narrowed and the party’s destination was � nally reached about noon at the head of the Wairau Creek’.

We were making the same journey 150 years later, and the comfort of a depth sounder kept us clear of mudbanks. It was an idyllic journey, the water like glass, and birdlife along the way abundant. Here and there tall kauri bordered rich farmlands, occupied in many cases by descendents of those � rst arrivals in 1863.

A lost world: Up the Wairau Stream to Mangaturoto

I was invited aboard by the redoubtable Albie Paton of Mangaturoto, to visit the upper reaches of the Otamatea, including the Kaiwaka and Wairau streams.

We launched at Point Curtis, after a drive through private farmland, and that in itself was something of a revelation. We could have simply been on a lake, with the high tide lapping at the roots of kauri tree and mangrove alike. The

railway bridge spanning the upper reaches of the Otamatea gave the lie to the fact that should we wish, we could easily access the harbour proper and then the open Tasman. But for the time being, were were cruising a private waterway.

We had set out to examine an old wharf, or the remaining few piles of that structure, where the early

metres of SH 12 as it sweeps past the Fonterra plant on the outskirts of Mangaturoto. Then we retraced our wake to where Bickerstaff Road abutts the river, where the remnants of the original wharf have been exposed from the mangroves.

With Mangaturoto’s 150th anniversary celebrations being planned forNovember next year, a landing re-enactment is on the menu. This will require some repair work, that is not without percent. Further west, on the Paparoa River, a new wharf has been constructed at The Landing, which is expected to be a centre-piece when the anniversary is marked there this coming Labour Weekend.

For now though, this stretch of the Kaipara Harbour is a remote backwater hidden from the harbour — but most de� nitely worth a visit, should the opportunity arise.

The appeal runs from May 1 to Sunday, May 13, and donations will help support Coastguard’s critical volunteer programme ‘Train one – save many’.

Coastguard Northern Region’s volunteers each require training both in the water and the air, to ensure they can respond with speed and accuracy.

There are currently 1,035 volunteers in Northland. In the past year they have invested 100,262 hours, responded to 1,616 calls for assistance and have rescued 3,710 people.

“We hope that with New Zealand’s support, this year’s MayDay appeal will help raise the necessary funds to give them the essential training and support they need to do their job safely while out on the water,” said Northern Region CEO, David Tommas.

From the cape to the bluff RSA clubrooms form a hub for their communities — in fact, the thought of a ‘proper’ New Zealand town without its RSA is almost unthinkable.

While the RSA was � rst formed for returned servicemen and women, the role of the organisation has grown from that of a memorial and a place of remembrance into one of real community involvement, with the doors of your local RSA open to all. There are very few Kiwis who haven’t had a relative or two who was a member, and even fewer who have never visited the RSA clubrooms in their locality.

And while the spirit of remembrance and camaraderie which built the association is still strong, there are increasing numbers of members both here and in Australia who are neither veterans or even ex-military — they have respect for the sacri� ces of those who have gone before,

Ratepayers plan rates response

“At its recent meeting, members were most concerned that rate increases required by Kaipara District Council will be beyond the capacity of many ratepayers to meet,” said the association chair, Ron Manderson.

“Since there is only KCRA that represents all citizens and ratepayers of Kaipara, we will take steps to gather further support and address the rates issue in particular.

He said the planned public meeting “is expected to be well attended and vocal as council liabilities have increased from $10 million to $91 million in 10 years according to published � gures, and rates from $9 million to $18 million a year in the same period, and further massive increases are required.

“While several different rate increase indications have come from the mayor, and staff, the most credible appears a recent one at a council meeting indicating an average 31%

further increase with large sectors facing up to 50%, with many more targeted rates. This was before the recent complaint to the police that council has illegally collected, and may need to repay $9.5 million of targeted rates of the disastrous Mangawhai Wastewater Scheme. The position therefore is still uncertain.”

Mr Manderson added that ratepayers pay around $20 million a year to KDC, which with subsidies provides the $40 million a year that council expends.

“Disturbingly very little monitoring of council takes place and ratepayers and residents simply must invest more time and money if they want improvement and control of rate increases. Outside entities appear to have captured in� uence of much of councils’ rampant expenditures.”

Insulation in your ceiling and walls creates the fundamental basics for warming your home.

Many homes built in NZ before 1991 have no insulation in the walls. While roof and under floor insulation is widely used, unless your ceilings and walls are properly insulated up to 70% of the heat in your home is being lost.

The Chinese today are numerous throughout New Zealand, owning businesses, farms, market gardens, and have blended successfully into the New Zealand community. The Crafar Farm deal is not about Chinese ownership. It is all about how Mr Crafar managed to borrow so much money and purchase so many farms, backed by the banks. There used to be land aggregation restrictions in New Zealand by way of the Land Aggregation Act which restricted the amount of land that an individual could purchase. It applied to New Zealanders as well as immigrants. A purchaser had to justify that they could manage and afford to run more than one property.

Since these restrictions have been removed, we have seen numerous individuals backed by banks, the majority

of which are overseas, to provide up to 100% loans for farmers to purchase additional properties. A substantial number of these today are facing � nancial ruin through no equity and overwhelming debt. Farmers in New Zealand owe $46 billion in debt nationally. It is not the threat of the Chinese or overseas ownership that we should be concerned about, but the issue of whether it is in the interests of New Zealand for banks to recklessly lend money to one individual, with the end result that the only way the banks can bail their way out is to look to overseas purchasers that can have the ability to mitigate the banks’ losses.

If it was possible to run a score card on former Dargaville mayors to mark their efforts for the town and district, it might come up with a surprise. A twice elected but little noted W. L. (Bill) Hughes, could well top the chart. Only one other man, F. A. Jones, served a longer term, although the late Peter Brown went on to be � rst Mayor of Kaipara District

Bill Hughes, as he was always known, came to Dargaville with wife Kathleen (Cassie) in 1929. Going into the lawyer’s of� ce of Hayes, Darling and Mitchell as a clerk doing mainly conveyance and estate work, he stayed in the job for the next � fty years. Darling lost his life in World War One and Gilbert Hayes died a few months after Hughes arrived. The � rm carried on and became Hayes Mitchell and Goulding, later adding partner Peter Pegg. In the 1980s decade it became Baanders Cannon and today it is known as Pegg Ayton Gordon.

Bill and Cassie Hughes lived in Plunket Street before shifting to Islington Street where they spent the rest of their lives.

It wasn’t long before Hughes became involved in a huge amount of community work. He was a Justice of the Peace and served as District Coroner for many years.

His efforts for Dargaville’s St John secured them a standby ambulance, one of only six Mercury cars imported into the country. He became president of the Northern Wairoa Brigade in 1952.

He was president of Northland District Council, � rst chairman and a director of Dargaville Milk Treatment Corporation, the 1956 president of Rotary and was elected a Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary’s highest honour. When he had spare time he was a keen bowler and typically became the president of the Northland Centre.

First elected to Dargaville Borough Council in 1941 he stood and was elected mayor three years later when Raymond Gibson retired. Hughes served two three-year terms until 1950 when another law clerk, Sam Astley, took over as mayor. Astley retired two years later and Bill Hughes stepped into the job again for a four-year third term.

Two. And not surprisingly he served as chairman of the North Auckland Patriotic Committee.

In their obituary, when Hughes died at Dargaville Hospital in October 1983 at age 85, the North Auckland Times wrote. ‘Within this district during the war, he took it upon himself to be with families when sad news was received from overseas battlefronts. Bill Hughes was a man who placed service above self.’

It would be hard to argue that he didn’t deserve his medal as a Member of the British Empire.

A cancer fundraiser for Project Promise, with something of a difference, is coming to town.

On Friday, April 27, Api Theodore will arrive on foot in Dargaville as part of her fundraising ‘hikoi’ in support of a cancer treatment centre at Whangarei Hospital.

“Api is a 65-year-old Maori wahine survivor of cancer who is passionate about her vision, dreams and aspirations in raising awareness and a consciousness about cancer by running around Northland,” says a project spokesman.

Api will be arriving on Friday at 1pm at Selwyn Park. The public are invited to welcome her, and to also follow the rest of her journey on www.facebook.com/ProjectPromiseNorthland.

It was announced last week that the fundraising efforts for Project Promise has of� cially reached the $1 million mark.
