Michael A. Miles, former Chairman and CEO of Kraft Foods and Philip

Morris, and former Chairman of JA of Chicago’s board, passed away on

November 10, 2013.

Mike was elected Chairman of the JA of Chicago board in 1987 and he

revolutionized our program model by expanding programming into middle

schools and implementing programs both during and after school. Chairman

during JA’s 50th anniversary in 1990, Mike challenged the organization to “Dare

to Be Great” and initiated a goal to reach 100,000 students annually by 2000.

The goal of this campaign (titled “Project Outward Bound”) was reached four

years ahead of schedule in 1996, when over 109,000 students were impacted,

and it set a precedent for JA’s annual ambitious student outreach goals.

Mike and his wife Pamela remained loyal supporters of JA, and we received

the ultimate compliment when his family chose Junior Achievement and the

Salvation Army to receive charitable donations in his honor at the time of his

passing. Those honorary gifts to JA totaled nearly $17,000 and sponsored more

than 1,200 JA students during the 2014 school year. Mike will be greatly missed.

For nearly 75 years, Junior Achievement of Chicago has been in the business of believing in our young people. Since 1940, our

volunteers and supporters have been dedicated to the transformative power of investing in our youth and have motivated them

to reach their boundless potential.

We showed our continued commitment to this promise by providing impactful programs to 484,239 Chicago-area students (an

8.7% increase over the prior year) and 22,914 Chicago-area classrooms during the 2014 school year, and introducing innovative

ways to connect with students through the re-imagination of our flagship curriculum, the “JA Company Program” (see page 12

for details). The new, blended-learning program will allow students to learn through vodcasts, tablets, and other digital platforms,

keeping JA relevant and accessible to all students.

We truly believe that all students have the ability to reach their academic and career goals, but they do not always have the

resources available to fulfill these aspirations.

That’s where you come in. As a classroom volunteer, educator, or financial supporter, you are helping to provide students with valuable financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurial skills they

need to be successful when they enter the workforce. By partnering with JA, you made a choice to invest in the boundless potential of youth, and we cannot thank you enough.

Your investment over the past year has paid enormous dividends, allowing us to establish exciting new partnerships in our communities, a strong financial standing, and most notably, the record 484,239

students that were impacted. This unprecedented level of outreach allows us to set our sights high for our 75th anniversary, with a goal to reach 515,000 Chicago-area students during the 2015 school year.

J A M E S C . D O W D L E(1934-2014)

James C. Dowdle, former President of Tribune Broadcasting Company,

a Director of the McCormick Foundation, and former Chairman of JA of

Chicago’s board, passed away on February 17, 2014. Known for his key role

in Tribune’s acquiring of the Chicago Cubs, Jim’s renowned business acumen

and his sincere care for those in need garnered him great admiration in the

Chicago community.

Under his leadership as Board Chairman, JA of Chicago became the first

JA office to launch the Whole School Program, which allows organizations

to create long-standing relationships with schools. To date, this program

(featured on page 13) remains a signature model for program implementation

across the United States. As a Director of the McCormick Foundation, Jim also

opened the doors to establish the JA partnership with Junior ROTC programs in

Chicago high schools, with young cadets serving as JA volunteers.

Jim and his wife Sally made many personal gifts to JA to help us further

our mission. His legacy will live on through the many students who receive JA

programs annually through the Whole School Program and through the JROTC

cadets who serve as inspiring classroom volunteers in their communities.

For 25 years during his JA board tenure, Jim reigned

as one of our most loyal supporters.

Mike left an indelible mark within Chicago’s business community because of his

expertise in marketing and his passion for helping others.

The Power of PartnershipsThis year, 11,448 volunteers made a difference in the lives of students through Junior Achievement of Chicago. Our passionate volunteers come from

corporations and the local community and invest in their neighborhood schools by teaching our relevant, hands-on programs. They serve as positive role models to students

by sharing their professional and life experiences while teaching JA’s proven, fun programs. JA’s educational curriculum helps students see the connection between what they

learn in school and the working world, thereby enhancing the relevance of their classroom learning and increasing their understanding of the value of staying in school. While

our programs are fantastic, it’s our volunteers that truly empower the future.

Elementary School ProgramsThe Junior Achievement elementary school programs include grade-specific lesson themes for kindergarten through fifth-grade students.

Elementary school programs teach students the basic concepts of business, economics, and how education is relevant to the workplace.

40 companies volunteered their expertise at the JA You’re Hired! Workplace Skills Challenge. The competition

gave students the opportunity to practice professional development skills through competitive workshops in

areas such as business etiquette, product development, interviewing skills, and ethical decision making.

In the JA Titan Competition, students competed in a virtual market simulation, making tough business decisions.

Groups from York High School in Elmhurst took first and second place and Lyons Township High School in

LaGrange was awarded third place.

The JA Company Program Competition judged the skills and business plans of JA Company Program businesses.

Additionally, six exceptional student leaders were named as Officers of the Year.

The New JA Company Program Since our founding, the JA Company Program has stood as the cornerstone of the JA experiential,

entrepreneurial-learning method. The program unlocks the innate ability in high school students

to fill a need or solve a problem in their community by launching a business venture.

The curriculum has been re-imagined this year to make the experience more contemporary.

For the first time, digital tools will be infused in the JA Company Program that will allow students

to take advantage of social media strategies, create their own e-portfolios, and allow for volunteers

to interact with students virtually.

With the help of a grant from The Hartford to JA USA, the new JA Company program is part of an

initiative currently being launched by JA USA to blend our educational curriculum with 21st century

learning capabilities. JA Education Gateway will provide modular, blended learning experiences that

include classroom materials, digital activities, online seminars, and competitions coupled with JA’s

traditional face-to-face volunteering; the new education platform will also feature virtual meeting

rooms and web-based mentoring.


The 2014 JA Company of the Year was awarded to Lemont High School

for their innovative and fun “LEMONT-OPOLY” board game!

The program not only teaches students about entrepreneurship, it makes students entrepreneurs! Students experience the same road blocks as entrepreneurs and develop their problem solving skills to get

past these obstacles.

The Encompass Championship This past spring Junior Achievement of Chicago was named one of four charity partners for The Encompass Championship, presented by CareerBuilder!

This prestigious Champions Tour tournament was played the week of June 16–22,

2014 at North Shore Country Club in Glenview. The tournament featured a special

Pro-Am format during the first two rounds of competition on Friday and Saturday

pairing all 81 Champions Tour professionals with celebrities and amateurs. Sunday’s

final round saw Champions Tour professionals competing for the individual title

and it came down to the final putt, which Tom Lehman made to become the 2014

Champion.

Encompass Championship Charities designated four outstanding youth-oriented

organizations as beneficiaries of this year’s tournament that are focused on improving

the lives of young people. JA of Chicago is honored to be sharing a portion of the net

proceeds for the event, with the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Fund, JDRF, and The First

Tee of Greater Chicago joining us as charity partners.

2014 Scholarship AwardsEach year, JA gives thousands of dollars in scholarships and awards to exceptional students who have participated in JA programs. This year, we awarded more than $100,000

in scholarships to 16 outstanding high school students. The top award, the Colonel Henry Crown Scholarship, provides $20,000 over the course of four years at an accredited college

and includes a paid summer internship at a Henry Crown affiliated company. The Colonel Henry Crown Scholarship winners were Mishika Narula of Highland Park High School in

Highland Park, Jenna Baker of Aqsa School in Bridgeview, Julissa Garcia of Morton East High School in Cicero, and Margaret Rogers of Lemont High School in Lemont.

Junior Achievement of Chicago was founded in 1940 and provides financial education programs at no cost to schools and students in the Chicago area. JA is a not-for-profit tax-exempt corporation under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and is a publicly supported organization as defined by Sections 170(b) (1) (A) (vi) and 509 (a) (1) of the code. Contributions to Junior Achievement of Chicago are deductible for federal income tax purposes, limited to the excess of any money contributed by the donor over the value of the goods or services received. Junior Achievement of Chicago’s total net assets were $13,719,912 for the year ending June 30, 2014.
