A Message Fromthe Board Chair

With thepervasive newscoverage ofAmerica’sfinancial turmoil, our children mayhave questionsabout what isgoing on in oureconomy. Manyadults have adifficult timeunderstanding—much less explainingin an age-appropriate way to a child—what is going on in our governmentand in our financial markets.

America can, and must, do a betterjob of educating our kids abouteffective money management, not onlyso they can avoid the financial pitfallsinto which so many adults have fallen, but because our kids will someday runour businesses, our government, andour financial institutions.

How can young people get thefinancial knowledge that they sodesperately need? Fortunately, there areorganizations who are answering thecall to educate the next generation ofconsumers about how to effectively

manage their money.Junior Achievement is one such

organization, working closely withthe business and educationcommunities to deliver programs thatteach K-12 students age-appropriate,hands-on lessons about how to befinancially literate. After participatingin Junior Achievement programs, students see the importantconnections between education, career, salary and desired lifestyle.I encourage businesses to support

organizations such as JuniorAchievement, which currently reachesmore than four million K-12 students inthe United States annually. In the 2008-2009 school year Junior Achievement ofEast Central Illinois reached 8,930children.

It is critical for our young people tolearn effective money management sothat American communities, and oureconomy, remain robust.

I first became associated withJunior Achievement upon myarrival to Mount Zion High Schoolin the summer of 2005. Myprincipal, Greg Bradley (a JuniorAchievement board member at thetime) informed me that the JuniorAchievement program “SuccessSkills” was to be incorporated intomy Consumer Educationcurriculum and that Dr. WarrenJesek of Jesek and Griffin FamilyDental Care was the consultant that Iwould be working with inimplementing this program into myclassroom.Fortunately,Dr. Jesek hadbeen servingas aconsultantfor JuniorAchievementprior to myarrival andwas graciousenough toeducate meabout whattypes of things he would be doing inmy classroom when teaching the“Success Skills” program.

I have enjoyed my associationwith Junior Achievement during thepast five years. I have been fortunateto work with an energetic consultantin Dr. Jesek as he supplements myConsumer Education curriculumbrilliantly. When teaching the

“Success Skills” program to my class,Dr. Jesek educates the students aboutan array of topics ranging fromeffective communication skills to the

traits that ittakes forstudents to besuccessfulthroughimplementingthe bookentitled “TheSeven Habits ofHighly EffectiveTeens” by SeanCovey.

Furthermore,in being asuccessful

businessman for the past 30 years, Dr.Jesek also educates the studentsabout the job search process throughhaving them complete a typedresume, cover letter, and a mockinterview with him so that they canbecome better aware about whattypes of questions may be asked ofthem when applying for a job in thefuture.

Regardless of the topic that he isinstructing to the students on a givenday, Dr. Jesek teaches with a passionmatched by few. He has no problemkeeping the students engaged in thematerial he is covering and thestudents enjoy seeing him weekly. However, Dr. Jesek’s contribution tomy classroom is not limited to hisweekly visits, as he has taken timeout of his busy schedule in the past tohelp students interested in themedical field gain valuable jobshadowing experience.

I look forward to my continuedassociation with the JuniorAchievement program and myconsultant, Dr. Warren Jesek. Thepersonnel employed at JuniorAchievement have been veryaccommodating when it comes toproviding resources to my classroom. Those resources, along with Dr.Jesek’s knowledge and passion haveprovided my students with aneducational experience thatsupplements my curriculum greatly.
