Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’Landys says the decision to charge wagering operators more from next month to bet on

thoroughbreds in the state is justified and will have no detrimental effect on wagering turnover.

The industry regulator will lift its Race Fields Fee (RFF) to a minimum of two per cent of turnover from 1 July, up from 1.5 per cent, which allows licensed wagering service providers to take bets on racing in NSW.

The additional revenue from the raised RFF will help sustain NSW’s record prize money levels and investment in infrastructure.

The move comes at a time when Tabcorp is poised to merge with Tatts, which holds the retail and pari-mutuel wagering licences for Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania, creating an $11 billion company.

V’Landys said yesterday that Racing NSW was in favour of the Tabcorp-Tatts merger which he believes will strengthen racing in Queensland.

“A merger for us is important for one reason and that is it basically makes Queensland racing viable again. The biggest winner out of the merger isn’t NSW, it is Queensland, because they will be getting between $20,000,000 and $30,000,000 in additional revenue once the merger matures,” V’Landys told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“We want to see Queensland racing become strong again.”

V’Landys confirmed he was against a push to lower the takeout rate on pari-mutuel markets, which is currently about 17 per cent

on win only pools (after dividends are rounded up in ten cent allotments). “(Australia) has the lowest takeout rate of any jurisdiction (with pari-

mutuel betting) in the world,” he said. “The turnover does increase (from decreased takeout rates), there is

no doubt about that, but the overall revenue does not make having a lower takeout rate worthwhile.

“All you are doing is looking after the professional punters. All you are doing, really, is giving another two per cent rebate to professional punters.”

The long-time Racing NSW chief executive said betting on horse racing in the state remained one of the premier wagering products despite strong competition from sports and gaming.

“There is no betting medium like racing. We have the highest integrity standards as we scrutinise every element. When you bet on sport or something else you don’t get that same element (of scrutiny),” V’Landys said.

“If you bet on the first try scorer market the takeout rate is 25 per cent. The head-to-head bets are much lower, granted, but the bookies are trying to get you into exotic bets where the market (percentage) is much higher.

“We are competing against sport, but our turnover on Racing NSW keeps on going up.”

Wagering on racing with Tabcorp, according to its 2015/16 annual report, increased by one per cent, but totalisator betting fell by 16.4 percent which was offset by the increase in fixed odds betting.

V’Landys said he was not perturbed by the continued push away from pari-mutuel betting by punters and said it would not adversely affect Racing NSW’s bottom line.

“We get almost the same return from TAB fixed odds as we do from the tote betting as we charge them a product fee on that. The yield on fixed odds is much greater compared to totaliser betting, so the return (to Racing NSW) is about the same,” he said.

He said the relationship between Tabcorp and Racing NSW was essential for the long-term viability of the industry.

“There is an incentive (to bet totaliser odds) from the TAB as we get a return from interstate meetings,” he said.

“If the meeting is held at Flemington or in Brisbane or Adelaide and the punter is betting with a corporate, then we get nothing, and that is the big difference between the TAB and other wagering operators.”

V’Landys said yesterday that the increase of the RFF, which was first introduced after a long court battle with corporate bookmakers Sportsbet and Betfair, would not adversely impact betting turnover on racing.

“Recreational punters aren’t affected at all because what is affected (by the increased Race Fields Fee) is the margin of the bookmaker,” he said.

“When we introduced Race Fields legislation bookmakers were making six cents in every dollar invested and now they are making 12 cents in gross revenue of every dollar invested. So, we are only taking half a cent of that, and that does not affect the punter.”

Australian wagering industry professional Greg Conroy, who has previously worked for the then Tab Limited and Betfair, told ANZ Bloodstock News the ‘price’ of wagering, or the takeout rate, had to remain competitive with other forms of entertainment.

“Wagering has to exist and grow alongside many other forms of

Tuesday 27 June 2017 Racing NSW To Increase Fees Imposed On Wagering Operators

competing entertainment options, so it’s vital that the industry sets takeout rates at a level to provide the optimum return for all parties,” said Conroy, who is now managing director of wagering software company RewardBet.

“The optimum level is thought to be around ten to 12 per cent and although recreational players may be oblivious to the percentage, they have a strong sense of how long their money lasts for.

“Wagering operators should be focused on providing entertainment value - a better experience for a longer time, and ensuring punters are customers for life.”

Conroy said if takeout rates, or bookmaker margins, increased too far to meet their RFF obligations along with other wagering taxes, racing as a betting medium would become unattractive to new players.

“Unfortunately, the constant increase in takeouts will eventually reduce the inflow of new punters who will gravitate towards more rewarding gambling options leading to an inevitable downward spiral in industry funding and participation rates,” he said.

“All participants should be focused on increasing the number of wagering punters and growing the wagering ecosystem as there needs to be a balance between recreational and more professional players to thrive.”

In response to the increased RFF, Betfair last week announced it will charge a maximum commission of ten per cent on customer winnings per race, up from the base rate of eight per cent.

Racing Victoria and Racing Queensland do not charge Betfair based on turnover. Betfair charges customers a maximum of six per cent of profit per race in those states.

In the wake of the decision, Betfair claimed the RFF increase had made thoroughbred racing in NSW the most expensive jurisdiction for the betting exchange to operate in.

"The commission increase and Turnover Charge changes on NSW thoroughbred racing has not been a decision that Betfair has taken lightly. However, such is the magnitude of the uplift in fees it was unfortunately the only course of action available to us," Betfair chief executive officer Tim Moore-Barton said last week.

"Betfair has never refused to pay product fees to Australian racing codes and we are proud of our contributions to the Australian racing industry. This includes over $20,000,000 to RNSW over the last five years.”

Betfair said under the new RFF of two per cent, 56 per cent of revenue generated by Betfair on NSW racing would have to be paid to the industry before considering operating costs and other taxes.

V’Landys denied that the impact on Betfair would reduce overall betting turnover and downplayed the importance of the betting exchange in the Australian wagering landscape.

“People think that Betfair is some immune organisation but at the end of the day it is a wagering operator. One of the things that we have discovered is that 70 per cent of layers on Betfair are bookmakers, so it does not affect the punter,” he said.

“Betfair is apart of the wagering landscape but it is not immune to paying Race Fields Fees. At the end of the day we have a product and we charge the same to every wagering operator.

“I think there is a lot of spin that comes out about Betfair. They have a place, but not at the cost of every other wagering operator and participant in the racing industry.”

Inglis June Online Sale Bidding Closes TomorrowBidding for the Inglis June Online Sale closes tomorrow. Among the 114 lots catalogued for the online auction, which opened for bidding on Friday, is five-year-old mare Chase The Rose (Domesday), who is a sister to recent Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2200m) winner Ruthven, and the stakes-placed three-year-old Mediterranean (Smart Missile). Bidding closes at 5pm tomorrow. Click here to view the online catalogue. Guineas Test For ConstantineThe progressive Chris Munce-trained three-year-old Constantine (Turffontein) is set to tackle the Sunshine Coast Guineas (Gr 3, 1600m) this weekend. The gelding finished third on his debut at Beaumont in November and has won his four subsequent starts, most recently by a length over 1400 metres at the Gold Coast, a performance which convinced Munce to step Constantine up in class. "It was a strong race for a midweek Class Four but he finished very powerfully and beat them well. I have always felt he was going to be best at 1600 metres or further," Munce said. Constantine is one of 32 runners nominated for the $125,000 Group Three on Saturday. 22 Entered For GlasshouseA total of 22 runners have been entered for the Glasshouse Handicap (Listed, 1400m) at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday, headed by the Darren Weir-trained Ulmann (Sebring). The five-year-old won the Wangoom Handicap (Listed, 1400m) at Warrnambool earlier this preparation and finished 11th in the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1350m) at his last start. Stakes winner The Virginian (Hinchinbrook) has also been nominated for the $175,000 race, alongside Flamboyer (Clang) and Snippets Land (Snippetson).

Caloundra Cup Noms ExtendedThe deadline for nominations for the Caloundra Cup (Listed, 2400m) have been extended until 9am this morning after 15 entries were received yesterday. The current entries are headed by the Adrian and Harry Bull-trained Benzini (Tale Of The Cat), who finished second in the Ipswich Cup (Listed, 2150m) under top weight at his most recent start. Benzini chased home the David Brideoake-trained Self Sense (Street Sense) on that occasion and he could face that rival again in the Caloundra Cup, while Darren Weir has nominated the dual stakes-winning mare Neverland (Big Brown). Ninth Race Added To Sunshine CoastRacing Queensland yesterday added a 0-70 Handicap (1400m) at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday to make it a nine-race program. Nominations for the additional $30,000 race, to be run in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Guineas, Caloundra Cup and Glasshouse Handicap close at 9am today. Click here to view Saturday’s Sunshine Coast nominations. Girl Sunday Chases Civic SuccessGirl Sunday (Encosta De Lago) is set for a tilt at the Civic Stakes (Listed, 1350m) at Rosehill on Saturday after missing out on a run in the Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1, 1350m). The mare was also entered for a race at Randwick last Saturday, but trainer Gerald Ryan opted to target the Civic Stakes instead. "There's no problem with her missing a race on Saturday and Rosehill won't be as wet as Randwick," Ryan said. "When she was racing really well last spring she won three races with three weeks apart. As long as we don't get rain and the track is not heavy, she will be running." Girl Sunday was one of 17 runners nominated for the $150,000 Civic Stakes. 13 Entered For Winter CupThe Joe Pride-trained Destiny’s Kiss (Power Of

Destiny) heads 13 entries for the Winter Cup (Listed, 2400m) at Rosehill on Saturday. The multiple stakes-winning eight-year-old took out the Winter Cup in 2013 and was last successful in the Australia Day Cup (Listed, 2400m) in January. Darren Weir has entered three runners, including the European import Gallic Chieftain (Tamayuz), while premier Sydney trainer Chris Waller has nominated Montauk (More Than Ready) and Soviet Courage (Dutch Art). Nominations for the Winter Cup have been extended until 11am today. Click here to view Saturday’s Rosehill nominations. Caulfield Next For ClipperProgressive Matt Dale-trained filly Clipper (Beneteau) is set to run over 1100 metres at Caulfield this weekend. The three-year-old has won her last two starts, including a comfortable three-length success at Randwick on 10 June, and Dale said the Super Vobis Three-Years-Old Fillies Handicap (1100m) had been the aim since that success. "Straight after she won her second highway race we had this race earmarked," Dale said. "She's a natural little racehorse who is very honest and she's progressing through the grades nicely. She certainly warrants a crack in an open three-year-old fillies race." A total of 31 fillies have been entered for the race. Click here to view Saturday’s Caulfield nominations. Kakanui Set For SandownThe lightly raced Kakanui (Statue Of Liberty) is set to continue his comeback from serious injury at Sandown Hillside tomorrow. The six-year-old showed promise as a younger horse before suffering a broken knee, forcing him out of action for over two and a half years, but he was narrowly beaten into second place at his second run back over 1000 metres at the same track on 14 June. "The way he's pulled up from his two runs has been terrific, and his leg is holding up absolutely brilliantly," trainer Brendan McCarthy told Racing.com. The gelding is due to face 15 rivals in the $40,000 Hyland EOFY Sale Handicap (1000m).

Battle Hero Joins Gangemi StableGroup Three winner Battle Hero (Stratum) will be prepared by Ascot-based trainer Chris Gangemi in Perth after being purchased by Black Type Bloodstock for $60,000 on Sunday. Battle Hero, who was unplaced behind Scales Of Justice (Not A Single Doubt) in the Hyperion Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Belmont on 17 June, was trained by Geoff Durrant and John Miller at Karnup for Peters Investments. Battle Hero was sold at the Magic Millions Perth Winter Racehorse and Thoroughbred Sale on Sunday, with owner Bob Peters offloading a big draft of horses headed by Dark Alert (Testa Rossa) and five-year-old gelding Battle Hero. Mahuta To Stand At Stud In WAStakes winner Mahuta (Flying Spur), a rising five-year-old formerly trained by Darren Weir, has been retired and will stand at Lynward Park Stud in Western Australia in 2017. The son of Flying Spur (Danehill), who won the 2016 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) during a six-race winning streak, suffered an injury in the spring after finishing third behind stablemate Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) in last year’s Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield, but returned to run three times in the autumn, finishing down the field over 1400 metres at Flemington at his last start in May. A fee for Mahuta has yet to be announced. Boorooj Win Rosehill TrialThe Peter and Paul Snowden-trained two-year-old Boorooj (Exceed And Excel) won a 1030 metre barrier trial at Rosehill yesterday. The Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum-raced filly, who fetched $750,000 at the 2016 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Segenhoe Stud, raced in midfield under Hugh Bowman in the five-runner trial for two-year-old and three-year-old fillies. She was angled off the rail and came with a sweeping run to lead close home, beating Dazzles (Redoute’s Choice) a shade cosily by half a length. Addictive Nature Wins TrialAddictive Nature (Savabeel) made a positive impression when winning a 900 metre barrier

trial at Rosehill yesterday. The unraced Bjorn Baker-trained two-year-old colt is a brother to Group Two winner and Group One-placed Savvy Nature and was purchased for NZ$775,000 by Ultra Thoroughbred Racing at the 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale. Addictive Nature held a prominent position throughout under Tim Clark and quickened up well in the closing stages to beat Colesberg (Congrats) by just over a length. Click here to view the Rosehill barrier trial replays. Shailer To Run Waller’s Queensland StablePremier Sydney trainer Chris Waller is on the verge of opening a Queensland satellite stable, with his brother-in-law and former assistant Paul Shailer returning to Australia to run the operation. Waller plans to have a stable either in Brisbane or the Gold Coast, with approval from Racing Queensland expected in the coming the weeks and 20 horses expected to be in work. "We will have about 20 horses which suits our model," Waller said. "We can send a few horses up there which might be struggling in Sydney. We will have a base for horses going to the Magic Millions in January and it's also a good base for the winter carnival.” Walker On Comeback TrailVictorian-based jockey Michael Walker could return to race riding as soon as 14 July after overcoming a career-threatening back injury that has kept him out of the saddle since February. The 33-year-old jockey has been cleared by specialists to return to trackwork after undergoing surgery to repair his back problem which struck mid-race at Moonee Valley on 17 February. "I feel good right now and I’m currently undertaking a rehab program and the aim is to return to riding trackwork next week," Walker told Racing.com. "It will down to my discretion as to which day I return to riding trackwork next week but if I get through a couple of weeks and feel good in myself then I will look to return to race riding from July 14th onwards.” Cerchi To Front Stewards On ThursdayCranbourne-based trainer Jim Cerchi Jnr will front the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board (RAD) on Thursday after being charged

by Racing Victoria stewards for applying chest rub ointment to a horse in his care on race day. Cerchi is alleged to have applied the ointment to the six-year-old Petrov (Eavesdropper) prior to a Benchmark 64 (1200m) at Pakenham on 8 June. Petrov was declared a late scratching by order of stewards after intervention from the stewards’ compliance assurance team. Hodge Promises Pakenham Track ActionPakenham Racing Club has vowed to fix its synthetic racecourse amid criticism levelled at the surface after a large amount of kickback when racing on Sunday. Prominent Victorian trainers David Hayes and Troy Corstens were vocal in their criticism of the surface after Sunday’s meeting. Pakenham Racing Club chief executive Michael Hodge said action would be taken to remedy the situation. "We put our hand up, yesterday the synthetic track did not race to the usual high standard," Hodge told Racing.com. "The surface did not perform to our expectation and we are disappointed about that. The prominent issue is the lack of moisture in the Polytrack, which is a consequence of a lack of rain and we will be addressing that as soon as possible.” BOBS Nominations OpenRegistrations for the Breeder Owner Bonus Scheme (BOBS) will close on 1 September with Racing NSW. The lucrative scheme is eligible to all eligible horses foaled in 2015 and turn two on 1 August this year. To be eligible for BOBS the now yearling must be sired by sired by a NSW-based stallion who has been paid up for the scheme by the stallion’s owners. The nomination fee for the latest crop of rising two-year-olds is $990. Horses may also be nominated for the BOBS Extra Scheme, which carries bonuses for horses who win over 1800 metres and further in NSW. The BOBS Extra nomination fee is $840. (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield on 2 September. The pair won the ATC Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) and the ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) respectively in the autumn, and both are likely to have the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) as a main spring target. "We couldn't be happier at this stage but there's still a lot of water to go under the bridge,” Forsman said. "We'll probably look at giving them a trial here in early August and then get them over to Melbourne in the middle of August. Obviously they are both Caulfield Cup candidates, so that would be the target at this stage.” Melbourne Possible For Miss WilsonThe Group Three-winning four-year-old Miss Wilson (Stratum) could also be set for a Melbourne spring campaign. The John Bary-trained mare is being aimed at the Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1, 1400m) in New Zealand, but her trainer said she could head across the Tasman if failing to make the cut for that race. "She's only won a Group Three for fillies and mares so she could be borderline,” Bary said. "If she wasn't going to get a run, I wouldn't think twice about heading straight to Melbourne. There's plenty of fillies and mares' races over there for her starting with the Let's Elope and, if she was going well enough, the Myer Classic would be her main aim."Flying Ibis Set For Winter CupThe Michael and Matthew Pitman-trained Flying Ibis (Nadeem) is on course for a tilt at the Winter Cup (Gr 3, 1600m) at Riccarton on 5 August. The seven-year-old, who ran fifth over 1200 metres at Riccarton at his most recent start, is likely to have several runs in the lead up to the NZ$100,000 race. “I was thinking about easing up on the horse but Chris, who has been riding him, said he would be an ideal Cup type and he has won over a mile at Riccarton before

as well,” Michael Pitman said. “He’s done a really good job since we’ve had him so we’ll keep going, there’s some nice races for him between now and the Cup.” Coleman Sidelined With InjuryJockey Michael Coleman is likely to miss the remainder of the season following recent knee surgery. The 47-year-old, who rode his 2000th New Zealand winner when successful aboard August Edition (Alamosa) at Matamata last month, revealed yesterday that he is likely to take an extended break to allow his knee to heal. “I had some repair work done and I’ll probably take the rest of the season off,” Coleman said. “That may change, but at this stage I’m not in any hurry to get back.”

Kitasan Ruled Out Of ArcMultiple Grade One-winning Japanese runner Kitasan Black (Black Tide) has been ruled out of a tilt at the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) in October. The five-year-old finished a disappointing ninth in the Takarazuka Kinen (Gr 1, 2200m) as the odds-on favourite on Sunday, and plans for a European campaign later this year have been shelved as a result. Kitasan Black's trainer Hisashi Shimizu has confirmed the entire will remain in Japan for races such as the Tenno Sho (Autumn) (Gr 1, 2000m) and Arima Kinen (Gr 1, 2500m) this season.

International

Harbour Law Out For The SeasonThe Laura Mongan-trained Harbour Law (Lawman), who won last year’s St Leger Stakes (Gr 1, 1m6.5f), has been ruled out for the season after suffering a tendon injury. The four-

year-old colt came back to form when running third behind Big Orange (Duke Of Marmalade) and Order Of St George (Galileo) in the Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2m4f) at Royal Ascot last Thursday, but the injury was discovered the following day. "After being on such a high last Thursday it was devastating on Friday to find the injury,” Mongan told the Racing Post. “But we have to be positive. It's not career-ending and we can get him back if we do everything right and look after him." Dettori To Miss Irish DerbyJockey Frankie Dettori will miss the ride aboard Cracksman (Frankel) in the Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) at the Curragh this weekend. The Italian has not fully recovered from the arm and shoulder injuries that prevented him from riding at Royal Ascot last week. "His specialist has told him rest is the best medicine for his injuries,” Dettori’s business manager Pete Burrell told the Racing Post. "He has two small fractures on the top of his left shoulder and he has seen his specialist twice – he's happy with how the injury is mending. The aspirations are that with it nearly two weeks since he was injured, Frankie will be back at the July meeting at Newmarket in three weeks' time."

Arrogate WorksArrogate (Unbridled’s Song) continued his preparation for the San Diego Handicap (Gr 2, 8.5f) on 22 July with a six-furlong workout at Santa Anita on Sunday. The colt completed the gallop in 1:24.40 and is likely to use the San Diego Handicap as a stepping stone to the Pacific Classic (Gr 1, 10f) at Del Mar on 19 August. "He went fast today and was really cruising around," trainer Bob Baffert told Bloodhorse.com. "The San Diego is his (next) race right now. We'll have to see how he's doing, of course, but he'll definitely be leaving for Del Mar.”

Trainer Shane Baertschiger thought he would put a line through the Singapore Golden Horseshoe series after his “best baby” Be Bee (Showcasing) hurt himself quite seriously back in March.

The Australian handler was gutted to say the least at the woeful sight of the son of Showcasing (Oasis Dream), the more forward of the three two-year-olds in his yard, returning from the training tracks with a bloodied left leg.

After losing his rider as he was being led out of the track, Be Bee galloped on riderless before jumping over a gate, tearing up his near side fore leg in the process. Thankfully, the injury was not life or career-threatening, but the annual two-year-old series plans looked touch and go then.

Hopes were, however, rekindled when the gelding recovered more speedily than thought. The Auric Stable-owned gelding was soon put through two barrier trials (winning the second from start to finish on 15 June), and Baertschiger could finally give him the

green light for his Kranji debut in yesterday’s S$75,000 Restricted Maiden race over 1100 metres.

In a close go to the line, Be Bee found enough to edge out the other debutant Augustano (Hard Spun) by a head. It did not matter how he won, to Baertschiger that maiden run was the go-ahead signal he needed to press on towards the race he had long been set for – the Aushorse Golden Horseshoe (SGP Gr 2, 1200m) on 7 July.

“He ripped his leg around three months ago. He got loose and jumped over a gate at the catching area,” said Baertschiger, whose other two-year-olds Silent Prince (Casino Prince) and Kiss Your Song (Your Song) ran in the Singapore Golden Horseshoe series without winning.

“We had to stitch up his left forearm, but luckily, he came back good. But because of that injury, he could not run in the two-year-old series.

“I thought he was home and hosed today, but he just made it by a nostril. He wasn’t as

brilliant as he was in his trials; when the other horse (Crazy Dreams) crossed in front of him, he got a bit of pressure.

“He’s only two but he coped with it quite well. He will now run in the Aushorse Golden Horseshoe in two weeks’ time.

“That was the race I had in mind for him before the injury. I’m glad he’s made it in time for the grand final.”

From his draw in barrier one, Be Bee was stoked up by jockey Barend Vorster to take up a prominent position but Crazy Dreams (Oratorio (AUS)) beat him to the lead.

Keen to avoid trouble in running, Vorster moved Be Bee off the fence to sit outside Crazy Dreams, before asking his mount to quicken at the top of the straight.

Be Bee hit the front after a brief tussle with Crazy Dreams, but began to show his inexperience when hanging under pressure.

Resorting to hands-and-heels riding, Vorster just made sure his young mount was given enough impetus to the line. The South African jockey was well inspired because another debutant Augustano (Amirul Ismail) was storming home with a later rush on the outside, but he fell short by a head.

Crazy Dreams ran third another two and a half lengths away. The winning time was 1:05.22 for the 1100 metres on the Polytrack.

“I’d like to thank (Baertschiger) for the opportunity to ride this horse, especially after he had to overcome an injury so early in his career,” said Vorster.

“He jumped quite well but when the other horse came across too quickly, I let him switch across heels to sit outside. At the top of the straight, he hit the front but he was very green and wanted to lay in on the rails.

“I just rode him hands and heels as you don’t want to cut a two-year-old in half.”

The wonderful association between jockey Martin Wepner and Lucky Winston (Churchill Downs) continued with a brilliant win in

Saturday’s Director’s Cup (MAC Gr 2, 1500m) at the Taipa racetrack.

On a track rated as heavy, Lucky Winston once again came from well back in the run to power home though the middle of the pack to win running away under Wepner, for what has been his biggest win to date.

Lucky Winston beat the 100/1 outsider The Whirlwind (Henrythenavigator), with the pacemaker Oh So Easy (Snippetson) holding on for third.

Martin Wepner first linked up with Lucky Winston back in November of last year when on a mark of 78, he flashed home for a close second to Oh So Easy to be beaten a head. Since then the pair have linked up a further eight times with the result now reading four wins and three seconds.

Saturdays win was the son of Churchill Downs (Danehill) first in Group company and

will not be his last judging by the impressive fashion that he scored in.

“As soon as they raise the bar he just keeps rising to the occasion,” Wepner said.

“I let him find his feet early like always and we were well back in the run. We had a lot of work to do when I started to wake him up after the 800 metres.

“We were held up a moment in the straight and then when the opening came he just blew them away.

“He is on a rating of 107 now and he will win again especially with the wet tracks we are having.”

Trainer Kim Cheong has done a marvelous job with the six-year-old, who has raced 13 times this season but has held his form and condition well. So much so that he was awarded the nod as the best turned out horse in the parade prior to the race.

Lucky Winston was originally a $10,000 purchase at the 2012 Inglis Autumn Yearling Sale and, following a barrier trial win at Echuca, was sold onto Macau.

The gelding’s overall record reads ten wins

and ten placed efforts from a total of 45 starts and over HK$2,700,000 for his owner and long time MJC supporter in Mr. Tam Vai Lam.

Smart three-year-old Win Win Friendship (Gold Centre) made it two wins from his three starts in Saturday’s other feature race, the University Of Macau Alumni Association Cup over 1200 metres.

Ridden by Brazilian rider Ruan Maia, Win Win Friendship soon took command of the race away from the gates and led clearly. Maia stretched the margin further by opening up a three length break at the 200 metres and had enough in hand to stave off the flying late challenge by Eangle Commander (Bahhare), with Winner Fortune (Murtajill) in third.

Whilst Saturday’s win was not near as impressive as the three-years-old’s effortless win in 1:08.70 over 1200 metres on 3 June, it showed the son of Gold Centre’s (Danehill) versatility to be able to handle any type of track.

At his debut on the sand, Win Win Friendship chased home the speedy The Pirate King (Red Element) who has since won again. Then followed his nippy 1200 metre win on a good track, with Saturday’s victory coming on the heaviest track we have had in some time.

Prepared by K C Chong, Win Win Friendship is a nice type that will develop further and should have no trouble reaching the top ranks.

Wichita Linesman (Danehill Express) has been a nice find for trainer Danny Wong this season, with the former West Australian galloper adding another win to his resume in Saturday’s Class Two Handicap over 1800 metres.

The four-year-old had to dig deep under jockey Wayne Smith to prevail by a neck over Macau Guineas (MAC Gr 1, 1500m) winner River Treasure (Savabeel), with a huge break back to Vancouver Jaguar (Husson) back in third.

The Australian-bred gelding has now won three races and has a close second to Lucky Winston under his belt from only six runs in Macau. With those runs he has already picked up close to HK$800,000 in prize money, including a local Group Three victory in the 4YO Prelude (MAC Gr 3, 1500m) back in March.

Australian Influence At Ascot Has Power Of Passion

Over the years, there have been many Australian-bred gallopers who have thrust their name onto the world stage through their deeds at Royal Ascot: Choisir, Scenic Blast, Takeover Target, Miss Andretti, Starspangledbanner and, of course, Black Caviar.

There were no Australian-bred compatriots running at Royal Ascot in 2017 but, if anything, our influence has never been stronger.

Choisir, who blazed Australia’s trail in 2003 with victories in the King’s Stand Stakes and then the Golden Jubilee, made his presence felt on the first day of Royal Ascot with his flashy 2YO, Rajasinghe, capturing the Group Two Coventry Stakes, while on the Friday he was in play again as damsire of Group One Coronation Stakes hero, Winter.

Darley Australia’s highly influential sire, Exceed And Excel, has been spreading his wings for a while too and chimed in with an Ascot double via Sound And Silence (Windsor

Highland Reel scores an emphatic victory in the Gr.1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes RACING FOTOS

"THERE HAVE BEEN MANY AUSTRALIAN-BRED

GALLOPERS WHO HAVE THRUST THEIR NAME

ONTO THE WORLD STAGE THROUGH THEIR DEEDS AT

ROYAL ASCOT"

Castle Stakes) and Out Do (Wokingham Handicap).Exceed And Excel’s own Australian-bred sire sons, Excelebration and

Helmet dominated the prestigious Group One St James’s Palace Stakes on Tuesday when Barney Roy and Thunder Snow ran first and third, while Foxwedge and Lonhro also figured prominently with Royal Ascot runners.

Perhaps stealing the show, however, was Australian-bred, Danehill mare, Hveger, who was exported to Ireland in 2009 and has been visited by Coolmore’s super sire, Galileo, every year since.

And the magic has been working overtime with Hveger’s son, Highland Reel, winning the Prince of Wales’s Stakes - his sixth Group One victory - while the full brother, Idaho, won the Group Two Hardwicke Stakes three days later.

Naturally enough, Coolmore Stud was over the moon with the week’s success given that the internationally acclaimed nursery stands Choisir and owns Hveger.

Coolmore Australia’s Sebastian Hutch was quick to acknowledge the influence from down under: “Royal Ascot is as prestigious a race meeting as there is in the world and it was a great endorsement of the Australian bloodstock industry to see so many horses with an Australian connection featuring so prominently,” Hutch enthused.

“It was a particularly special week for Hveger, who has been an astonishingly successful producer for Messrs Meduri, Tagg and Moffitt. For many breeders, it is the pinnacle of a lifetime’s work to have a Royal Ascot winner, but to breed two in a week, out of the same mare, is a special achievement.

“Highland Reel is as tenacious a horse as there is in Europe at the moment and while his earnings are now in excess of A$11 million

following the Prince Of Wales, the fact that he seems to be getting even better means that he’s likely to add significantly to his winning haul through the remainder of the season.

“His brother, Idaho, has always looked a top class horse in the making, but hasn’t enjoyed the best of luck. However, that was a brilliant performance in the Hardwicke, the form of which looks very strong. It only appears to be a matter of time before he wins at the highest level.

“It’s very exciting to see the success that Galileo is enjoying with elite mares from Australia, especially when you consider the likes of Atlantic Jewel, Nechita, Melito, Sea Siren, Amicus and Monsoon Wedding, along with some other fantastic mares from Australia, have progeny to come by him.

“As for Choisir, well, he’ll always be synonymous with Royal Ascot. What he achieved as a racehorse there is unlikely to ever be repeated and it’s a credit to his quality as a stallion to see his offspring excelling there as well.

“Starspangledbanner was obviously a phenomenal representative for him and carved out his own piece of history at Royal Ascot as a sire a few years later, while Coventry Stakes winner Rajasinge, became his sire’s 82nd career stakes winner and is a high class colt in the making. And, just for good measure, Choisir was broodmare sire of Winter, following up on the win, through another of his daughters, of My Dream Boat 12 months ago.”

Mick Talty of Edinglassie Stud “Listen Here the mare was bred at Edinglassie Farm and was sold by the breeder

Indian Pacific as a yearling at the Easter Sale. “She was a powerful filly beautifully balanced with gaskins like a Bulgarian

weight lifter. As a foal herself she was correct and strong with a determined attitude which I loved hence I purchased her for my partner Robert Oatley.

“Listen Here was trained by David Hayes and was a stakes winner, winning the Pewsey Vale Stakes as a two-year-old.

“After her racing career I sent her to Northern Meteor and the foal ended up being (Group Two winner) Deep Field. I was so impressed by him as a foal that I sent her back to Northern Meteor, and she produced (Group One winner) Shooting to Win.

“She was then sent to Zoustar, so we would have a three-quarter foal to those two colts. The filly she produced was not disappointing, always being a beautifully balanced and correct with plenty of scope and a great attitude.

“We knew she would sell well, and Bruce Perry being a great judge of yearlings purchased her for New Zealand-based clients, and we look forward to seeing her on the track.
