Growing up as an Army brat, my retail experience was limited solely to the PX and the Commissary. My parents bought all our groceries, toothpaste and clothing at these two fine establishments. I never knew what Sears or K-Mart sold behind their doors! I think I may have become aware of brand names in clothing when Jordache jeans made the news in the late 70‟s because of their provocative com-mercials. I was more impressed that people were willing to pay much more for a

pair of jeans with a little tag on its seat than jeans without the special tag. Today I have the Internet, Amazon, Wal-Mart and Target to satisfy my consumer needs. Like most people, as I have grown older, I tend to be brand-specific in my shopping whether it is pasta or computers. (fyi – Barilla and Apple!) I am sure that all of us tend to a similar familiarity. Sometimes I wonder if we have begun to identify ourselves by the brands with which we surround ourselves. I sus-pect that this tendency is even more pronounced in generation X, Y and Z. Instead of having the goal of becoming human beings, we are seeking to be branded by our chinos manufacturer or the contents of our wallet or the model of car that we drive. Once upon a time, slavers were branded to identify them as being the property of others. We still do this to cattle for the same reason. The quest to identify ourselves by the brands we surround ourselves with is what Father Johnson would call an existential or ontological quest. A „brand‟ seeks to be unique and distinguishable from other similar products that might perform the exact same function. It seems to me that our relentless quest to identify ourself by the „brands‟ we consume is ultimately a quest for personhood. However, identifying ourselves with a brand ultimately is not a good thing. It creates a false identity, an inauthentic self that is based merely on the choices of my own ego. Ultimately, we hope to market this self-constructed image of ourselves to others in the same way that Madison Avenue seeks to convince us to purchase their products. Ulti-mately, we are transforming ourselves into commodities to be consumed, labeled, and objectified. Instead of becom-ing fully human being, I have become a product, a thing, someone just as manufactured as the brands I buy at the mall or online. If I attempt to define myself by the brands that I surround myself with, then I become a derivative person, one of many clones, posturing behind my things. Ultimately, I become defined by my relationship to a hundred self-created „brands.‟ Behind the labels and the brands is a fool‟s gold. Is it not predictable that as I invest more of my time and energy into this inauthentic self that I become more insecure, depressed and lonely. The Gospel this weekend asks „what really is the Truth about Jesus.‟ If he allows himself to be „branded‟ by the judg-ments of others, then he risks being labeled and defined by their false expectations. It will be these mistaken as-sumptions of who Jesus truly is that will lead to the conflict with his fellow Jews that will create the tension that will lead to his death on Calvary. Yet, we are no more immune to misunderstanding who Jesus is than his peers. We can also mislead ourselves about who Jesus is for us. How do you answer the question „who do you say that I am?‟ How we answer this question will determine the „brand‟ by which we define ourselves. If we choose to be branded by Jesus instead of all the shallow alternatives, then we will already be truly „branded‟ by the truth. If we succumb to the shrill merchandizing that surrounds us constantly, then we are destined to become a shadow of our true self. We do need not create anything or have anything. We only need to live as who we truly are. We are made in the Image of a Trinitarian God who exists as Three Persons in One Nature. As persons, we are indeed unique individu-als never to be repeated. Still we share a common nature. We do not need to strive to distinguish or brand ourselves artificially if we could just recognize that like Christ, we are unrepeatable persons with a unique task. Without self-consciousness or ego, without needing to compare ourselves to anyone else, we can begin to learn to live as Christ did. By doing so, we will have adopted the true brand by which we can define ourselves. Our true brand can never be something we create, take on, project or carefully craft. Instead, we, like the stained windows of a church building, simply allow that light of Christ to shine through us. Indeed, as Christians, we can „be the brand and live the brand.‟ We won't have to worry about the labels that we or others place upon ourselves. The „Brand‟ is as limitless as God, no label can describe it, limit it nor define it. Howev-er, we'll know the brand when we see it.

God Bless! Fr. Michael Roverse

St. Teresa of Avila would like to connect Catholics across the Augusta Deanery! This year our Parish Handbook will feature a directory of area businesses that are owned or operated by our parishioners. Catholic business owners listed in the directory are active parishioners of St. Teresa of Avila parish. This directory serves to build the Catholic com-munity by bringing together those who support the Gospel and desire to connect with and serve like-minded Christians in the local community. If you would like your business included in the Parish Business Directory, please complete the form on www.st-teresa.com or pickup one in the Narthex.

Your business will also be included in the online business directory. Business logos and business cards may be submitted with the form and will be included in the online directory.

Visit www.st-teresa.com/business_directory to view the online directory. Let's build up the Catholic community together by getting to know who the Catholic business owners are in our community. Please submit your infor-mation by Monday, 07/01/2013 to the church office or submit via email to [email protected]

The readings for this

Crucifixion. It was a

tragedy and an extremely

sad occurrence; at the

same time, as it meant

salvation for us, it was a

time of great joy.

The first reading from

Zechariah recounts this

time of great mourning,

yet also as a time when

the people will be given a

“fountain to purify from sin and uncleanness.” In the Gospel, the Lord points

to a similar contradiction when He says, “…whoever wishes to save his life must lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.”

Our lives are filled with sadness and joy. Those who practice stewardship as a

way of life focus on the joys. If we concentrate on our blessings, the crosses

we must bear become less burdensome and more tolerable. The noted author

and lecturer Helen Keller, who was both deaf and blind, had a wonderful

stewardship outlook on life. She once said, “Keep your face to the sunshine

and you cannot see a shadow.” That is our challenge as stewards — to concentrate on the good in life because that is what brings us great happiness.

A Family Prayer for the Year of Faith

O God our Father,

In Jesus you call all Chris-tian families and homes to

be signs of living faith.

By the light of the Holy Spirit, lead us to be thankful for the gift of faith, and by that gift may we grow in our relation-ship with Jesus, your Son,

and be confident witnesses to Christian hope and joy to

all we meet.

In the name of Jesus Christ

our Lord.

Amen.

Mission of the Family, by Jon Leonetti How will the world change? What is the key to moving the

culture from death to life and from idols to God? The key is

to communicate God’s will to people in a way that they can

understand it and do it. The best place to pass on God’s

magnificent plan of sheer goodness is in the family. Mission

of the Family serves as an excellent guide to equip families

so that their change will change the world.

Book Reviews "We crave spirituality that is practical and truly lived, and this is what you will experience when you read Mission of the Family by Jon Leonetti. Having just witnessed his excellent presentation to more than 600 men in Louisville, I read his book and find a Christian man who makes good use of his experience as a husband, father and evangelizer to give a living witness that Jesus Christ continues in our age to give life and abundance in and through His Church. Restoring family life in our culture requires witness like Jon Leonetti. I recom-mend his very accessible book."

+ MOST REV. JOSEPH E. KURTZ Archbishop of Louisville, Vice-President of the USCCB

“In a busy society, there is nothing more challenging yet joy-filled than nurturing a holy family. If you’ve ever hoped for a complete yet easy to understand guide for fostering and maintaining a happy family, this is it!”

SOMETHING ABOUT SUMMER For many years priests across the Diocese of Savannah have noticed the yearly “Summer Phe-nomenon.” The main expression of this phenomenon is a decrease or shrinkage of fabric in cloth-ing thus resulting in an increase in the exposition of skin and body parts. Priests have been fighting against this “Summer Phenomenon” in a multitude of ways for decades, but it has been a mostly unsuccessful fight. One of our former pastors, Fr. Tom Peyton, recently wrote an article in his St. Michael’s Bulletin addressing this annual summertime issue: “Father, would you please put something in the bulletin or say something from the pulpit about the way people come dressed for Church? Well, my views haven’t changed in 39 years of priesthood. I learned them from childhood (and please feel free to disagree!).

1. It is all about “Family Spirituality.” What values are taught in the home and this is usually done at a very early age. Behavior, activity and dress/attire for Church is all about par-enting.

2. I am not in the family home as children, teens, and adults are preparing for Church. It is the parental example and authority that should be visible and operating.

3. My son or daughter would be dressed for Church, even at the beach or regardless of the heat, in a given way designating WHO WE ARE GOING TO SPEND SOME TIME WITH.

4. The “domestic church”, the family home, needs to reclaim the Lord’s Day as a significant time of the week. Again, it is parental values!

5. Here are some favorite random thoughts of the parishioners: “It’s a disgrace; it’s immoral!” “It’s style. It’s fashion.” “It’s the parents fault.” “It’s a sign of the times.” “What’s the issue? At least they are in church.” “They have a dress code at St. Peter’s in Rome. Guards enforce it!” As your Pastor, my take on church attire is that it all boils down to a reverence for the Blessed

Sacrament. Do you teach/believe in the Presence of God in the Blessed Sacrament? So for me as a priest, it is not a matter of “Judgment” or “Choice” or “Personal Freedom.” It is a basic PROFES-SION OF FAITH!” As your Pastor here at St. Teresa’s all I will add is “AMEN!”

UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE (Part 2)

Today's Catholic is called to take an intelligent, spiritual approach to the bible. Listed here are a few points for fruitful Scripture reading. Last week we listed the first four points for fruitful

Scripture reading. Here are the last six.

1. The Bible isn't a book. It's a library. The Bible is a collection of 73 books written over the course of many cen-

turies. The books include royal history, prophecy, poetry, challenging letters to struggling new faith communities,

and believers' accounts of the preaching and passion of Jesus. Knowing the genre of the book you are reading will

help you understand the literary tools the author is using and the meaning the author is trying to convey.

2. Know what the Bible is – and what it isn't. The Bible is the story of God's relationship with the people he has called to himself. It is not

intended to be read as history text, a science book, or a political manifesto. In the Bible, God teaches us the truths that we need for the sake of

our salvation.

3. The sum is greater than the parts. Read the Bible in context. What happens before and after – even in other books – helps us to under-

stand the true meaning of the text.

4. The Old relates to the New. The Old Testament and the New Testament shed light on each other. While we read the Old Testament in light

of the death and resurrection of Jesus, it has its own value as well. Together, these testaments help us to understand God's plan for human

beings.

5. You do not read alone. By reading and reflecting on Sacred Scripture, Catholics join those faithful men and women who have taken God's

Word to heart and put it into practice in their lives. We read the Bible within the tradition of the Church to benefit from the holiness and wisdom

of all the faithful.

6. What is God saying to me? The Bible is not addressed only to long-dead people in a faraway land. It is addressed to each of us in our own

unique situations. When we read, we need to understand what the text says and how the faithful have understood its meaning in the past. In

light of this understanding, we then ask: What is God saying to me?
