‘ROUND THE BENZ

I hope all of you have survived the May storms. The steady rain along with snow in the moun-tains, has been a god-send, greatly reducing the fire danger and linger-

ing drought. It has been difficult to keep our cars clean though. With the summer driving season just around the corner, you will need to get your favorite star car ready for our Section’s upcoming sum-mer events. Here are some highlights.

On Friday, 5 June, we invite you to bring out your inner Rembrandt or Jackson Pollock and join us at “Paint the Town” where you will be guided through the creative process of creating a painting. The fee includes a meal and all supplies but it is BYOB.

On Saturday, 20 June, we’ll kick off the day with breakfast at The Egg & I at 9:00 a.m.. Later in the day, we will be having our second annual Star Party, held again at Absher Acres in Peyton. You will have the opportunity to star-gaze through sev-eral high-powered telescopes. Since this is an outdoor event at night, please dress appropriately, bring a lawn chair, etc. This is also a potluck event, so please bring a favorite dish to share.

In July, our section will again by hosting the Joint Section Picnic. This is an event for both the Pikes Peak and Mile High Section members. Plan to join us on Sat-

urday, July 11 at Maguireville in Monu-ment, CO for a catered barbeque lunch and an opportunity to meet new and old star friends in a unique environment.

The following Saturday, 18 July, join us for breakfast and the President’s Rally. The rally will begin immediately after breakfast. This will be a multiple choice Q & A-type rally and the theme is the 1980’s “Back to the Future” movie trilogy, If you plan to participate, I would recom-mend you watch the three movies.

As you can see, we are off to a fun start for the summer. I hope to see many of you at these events.

And, just a note in closing on the status of the 2015 Mercedes AMG Formula One team. Drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton continue their winning ways. Lewis Hamilton is the defending Drivers’ Champion and Team Mercedes began the season as the defending Construc-tors’ Champion, having secured its first championship title at the 2014 Russian Grand Prix.

After six races to date, Hamilton leads the Drivers’ championship standings by 10 points over teammate Nico Rosberg. However, Nico is closing fast with a win at the Monaco Grand Prix last month. Either Hamilton or Rosberg has won ev-ery race except one - they placed second and third behind Ferrari in the Malaysia Grand Prix. Mercedes currently leads the Constructors’ standings.

As always, drive safe, and I will see you down the road.

Star Party (cont.) - 20 June 2015(Continued from page 1) ...watch closely you may be able to see a satellite streak by. Saturn will be visible near the constella-tion Libra around 9 p.m. The Milky Way will be visible (it will run almost north to south). I will bring along a star chart so you can orient yourself with the night sky. Last year many people just enjoyed sitting under the stars talking with friends. Others walked around and checked out the stars and constellations.

We will have a few door prizes and every-one will be eligible. Please RSVP and tell us what dish you plan to bring along by

June 15. If you RSVP by June 15, you will receive an extra chance at winning one of the door prizes. That’s two extra chances at a door prize! So email Ken today with your picture answer and your potluck dish. Contact him at [email protected] or 719- 433-9025 to RSVP.

Directions: To get there, take Hwy 24 east to Peyton (approx 20 miles). Turn left onto Peyton Highway. It makes a slight jog to the right after 3 miles. Take the first left onto Prospector Drive (portions of this road are unpaved). 17410 Prospector is on the left. We plan on starting around 7 p.m.

Joint Section Picnic - 11 July 2015Mark your calendar, everyone - you’re in for a real treat. On Saturday, 11 July 2015, The Pikes Peak Section will host the an-nual Joint Section Picnic at Maguireville in Monument, Colorado.

Maguireville is a world-class museum started by Jim and Donna Maguire on their horse ranch near Monument, CO.

The interior of the barn was made over into a large social area surrounded by the original horse stalls converted into repro-ductions of businesses from rural America. Each business is fully outfitted with original furnishings that Jim has collected over the years.

As Jim turned over more of his owner-ship responsibilities at Overhead Door to his son Kevin, this gave him more time to collect memorabilia for Maguireville, and collect he did, and still does.

A friend who was making his first visit to Maguireville recently stated, “This is one of the best kept secrets in El Paso County.” For more information on Maguireville, ac-cess the Web.

If you would like to spend a few hours with old and new Star friends, enjoying catered barbeque while surrounded by memora-bilia from your parents’ and grandparents’ era, plan to attend this year’s Joint Section Picnic.

All you need to do is RSVP by July 6, 2015, and arrive with $10 for each adult and $5 for each child under 12. Plan to arrive between 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. Food will be served at 1:00 p.m.

To RSVP, contact Clark or Karen Absher at 719-749-2621, or [email protected]. Directions to Maguireville will be pro-vided in next month’s newsletter.

“...learn about

history of

Colorado,

Earth, and the

universe.”

Please join us for breakfast at 9:00 a.m. at The Egg & I restaurant on Saturday, 18 July. At ap-proximately 10:30 a.m., the real fun begins.

The theme of the rally is in-spired by the 1980’s “Back to the Future” movie trilogy. In “Back to the Future II,” Marty and Doc travelled thirty years into the future from 1985 to 2015. In the 2015 movie future, people drove flying cars, kids rode hover boards, and “Mr. Fusion” compact power supply units were common. Obviously, our 2015 is quite

different from the movie version, but it will make for great rally questions.

The movies covered the years 1885, 1955, 1985, and 2015. Multiple choice quesions and clues will cover movie trivia with some Mercedes-Benz related history from those same years thrown in.

I strongly suggest you watch all three mov-ies if you can, before the rally. The rally should take 2 to 3 hours, ending with lunch at an appropriately-themed restaurant. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers. The cost is $10 per car.

Please RSVP to Andrew Nelson, 719-634-7522 (home) or email him at [email protected].

Denver Nature & Science Museum - 15 August 2015The Denver Nature & Science Museum is the destination for our August Fun Run. After our monthly breakfast we’ll travel to Denver where we will explore exhibits on dragons, unicorns, and mermaids; the Silk Road; Egyptian mummies; and North American Indian cultures, just to name a few.

A wide variety of exhibitions, programs, and activities help museum visitors learn about the natural history of Colo-rado, Earth, and the universe. The 500,000-square-foot building houses more

than one million objects in its collections including natural history and anthropo-logical materials, as well as archival and library resources. Plan to join us on this very edifying trip.

Silly humans, so accident prone.

To comply with a California law, Google released the shunt stats for its self-driving test fleet, and the results are impressive. And by impressive, we mean perfect. Be-cause while there were 11 instances where the cars wound up in collisions, as The Car Connection reported, the self-driving test-beds were never to blame.

Most of the accidents—seven, to be ex-act—involved the cars being rear ended,

and at least one was the result of another vehicle running a red light. The other incidents, meanwhile, were with a human driver in control of the vehicle. Google’s program has covered approximately a mil-lion miles since it began in 2009.

Of course, it will be quite some time before buyers will be able to hop into their ve-hicles, push a button, and be chauffeured home by their vehicles. Revelations like this make it clear that the technology isn’t an “if” but a “when.”

Drive-In Movie - 6 September 2015The Mountains, Movies & Mercedes Re-gional Event of last year was such a suc-cess that we can’t begin to duplicate it. So this year, we’re going to throttle back just a little on our annual Drive-In Movie event. This may be the last year for this iconic event, so mark this date on your calendar and join us for a top down (and sunroofs open), fun-filled evening.

Once again, we’ll gather at Dan & Cheryl Kerbs’ homestead for dinner and a movie - Pikes Peak Section-style. Plans are still being formulated, but we’ll have steaks on the barbie and accompanying side dishes along with suitable beverages, adult and otherwise. Line up your Star car and grab some popcorn as you relax under the stars. It’s one of the best times you’ll have all year.

Pikes Peak Section Enchanted Weekend

“Highlights

include driving

the Enchanted

Circle Scenic

Byway and

visiting the

Black Mesa

Winery....”

The Pikes Peak Section is headed south to New Mexico this fall for a 3-day regional event called The Enchanted Weekend. We plan to leave Colorado Springs on Friday, 9 October for Taos, NM. Highlights of the weekend include driving the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway and visiting the Black Mesa Winery and other points of local inter-est.

The Enchanted Circle is an 83-mile loop through mountains, valleys, mesa, and national forest, all unique to northern New Mexico. We’ll drive from Taos to Questa via Red River, Eagle Nest and Angel Fire. This beautiful countryside offers dramatic moun-tain vistas of aspen and pine in the shadow of 13,000-ft Wheeler Peak, the highest point in the state.

Then it’s a 37-mile drive down a winding canyon road along the Rio Grande River to the Black Mesa Winery. Black Mesa Win-ery has garnered multiple “Best of Show”, “Best in Class” awards, and “Double Gold” and gold medals in international competi-tion. Black Mesa’s wines meet the high-

est standards for wine, not only for New Mexico, but also on the international stage. Need more activities? Taos Pueblo is a living Native American community and National Historic Landmark. The multi-story adobe buildings have been continuously inhabited for over a 1,000 years.

We will be staying at the historic La Fonda de Taos Hotel on the Plaza. Our renowned hospitality suite will be open on Friday and Saturday nights before and after dinner. The event cost for this weekend is $37 per person and includes a continental breakfast, box lunch, snacks and drinks in the hospitality suite for two nights, dash plaques and prizes. We plan to return home Sunday, although it’s possible to stay over to Monday and have breakfast with anyone who wants to spend Sunday shop-ping or sightseeing.

Contact Dave Carpenter at [email protected] for more information or to sign up. Registration deadline is 1 September 2015. Please plan to join us for this delightfully enchanted weekend.

CO Railroad Museum Recap

“...why in the

world you

haven’t visited

before.”

The Colorado Railroad Museum is one of those places that you ask yourself why in the world you haven’t visited before. It’s located just down the road from the Coors Brewery - ah, the smell of cooking hops in the morning.

Our group headed north following our monthly breakfast. We rendezvoused at the museum for photo ops and then set off to explore. We climbed aboard all types of rail cars from every era, we visited the railroad

roundhouse and turntable, we toured the grounds aboard the Galloping Goose, and we said howdy to the engineer overseeing the awesome HO model set in the base-ment. That was a Colorado history lesson all by itself. It was a great day, capped off with a wonderful meal at the Old Capitol Grill in downtown Golden.

Many thanks to Stan and Mary Bixler for organizing this great day. Check out all the pictures on our Facebook page - MBCA Pikes Peak Section.

C-Class Cabriolet by Viknesh Vijayenthiran

Here is the latest spy shot of a prototype for the convertible version of the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class, courtesy of Motor Authority. We’re expecting it to be revealed later this year or early next. The car will be called a “C-Class Cabriolet,” and will be joined in show-rooms by another generation of the C-Class Coupe.

These two-door C-Class variants will be sportier than the sedan on which they’re based. We can already see that the track of this prototype is wider than that of the sedan, and the car looks to be sitting lower. The side mirrors are also mounted to the doors, whereas on the sedan these are mounted at the base of the A-pillar.

As for the roof of the C-Class Cabrio, Mer-cedes is likely to forgo a retractable hard-top in favor of a lighter and less expensive soft-top, just as it has with the E-Class Cab-rio and upcoming S-Class Cabrio. The SLK, which is soon to be renamed an “SLC”, will

be sticking with the hard-top option for the time being.

Engine offerings should match those of the C-Class sedan, meaning C300 and C400 models at launch. In the C-Class sedan, the C300 is powered by a 235-horse-

power, 273-pound-foot 2.0-liter turbo-charged four-cylinder while the C400 gets a 329-horsepower, 354-pound-foot 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6. A seven-speed automat-ic and rear-wheel drive should be standard.

“We’re expect-

ing it to be

revealed later

this year or

early next.”

“The fleet of

M-B vehicles

fits perfectly

into Jurassic

World...classy,

sophisticated,

and sexy....”

This summer, when the long-awaited next installment of the ground-breaking Juras-sic Park series, Jurassic World, arrives in theaters, an entire fleet of Mercedes-Benz vehicles will share the spotlight. Alongside the iconic G-Class, Unimog, Sprinter mod-els and the all-new GLE Coupé will play a leading role in the epic action-adventure.

Mercedes-Benz will accompany the re-lease of the film with a comprehensive co-promotional package that includes a television commercial, print and online ad-vertising, dedicated microsites and social-media activities. The commercial, starring the Mercedes-Benz vehicles from the film, launched last month in the U.S. and

Europe. Ad-ditionally, a custom key visual was developed for all com-munication in which the all-new GLE Coupé is seen eye-to-eye with the film’s fearsome

Indominus rex.

“In 1997 the Mercedes-Benz M-Class made its first official appearance in the Hollywood blockbuster ‘The Lost World: Jurassic Park’. Today, 18 years later, another Mercedes-Benz car will debut in a significant role in the latest installment of the ground-breaking Jurassic Park series named Jurassic World: the new GLE Cou-pé,” says Dr. Jens Thiemer, Vice President Marketing Mercedes-Benz cars. “We are delighted to continue our partnership with a multitude of Mercedes-Benz vehicles and will promote the film and our cars with many exciting global marketing activities.”

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 AMG Coupé makes its film debut as the official car of Jurassic World operations manager Claire,

played by Bryce Dallas Howard. When Claire must confront a crisis well beyond what she can handle alone, she takes the new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé (show-casing its off-road capabilities) and joins behavioral researcher Owen (Chris Pratt) on a mission in the lush jungle of Isla Nub-lar.

In addition we see Owen piloting the G-Class, the patriarch of all Mercedes-Benz SUVs. The film also features the Unimog, cast as a dinosaur ambulance, as well as a G-63 AMG 6x6 and various Sprinter mod-els. “The fleet of Mercedes-Benz vehicles fits perfectly into Jurassic World. They are classy, sophisticated, and sexy — exactly what would exist in a modern international theme park,” says producer Frank Mar-shall.

The Mercedes-Benz promotional campaign kicks off prior to the June 12 release of the film. Starting May 18, Mercedes-Benz launched a TV commercial (http://mb4.me/Jurassic-World_TVC) showcasing footage of all the Mercedes-Benz vehicles appear-ing in the film. But it is the all-new GLE 450 AMG Coupé which will captivate viewers as the “Alpha Car”. The ad is supplement-ed by extensive print, online and out-of-home publicity measures. In Germany, for instance, the key visual will be featured in advertisements, on posters and flyers.

Movie fans can discover more about the film and the featured Mercedes-Benz vehi-cles on a special Jurassic World microsite (www.mercedes-benz.com/jurassicworld) that will show exclusive behind-the-scenes material and a selection of additional im-ages of the set, which explain how the film was created and the roles of the Mer-cedes-Benz vehicles. Exclusive content will be released and discussed with fans on Mercedes-Benz social media platforms (Making-Of: http://mb4.me/Jurassic-World_MO). Jurassic World model vehicles of the G-Class and G 6x6 will be available at the Mercedes-Benz Accessories online store as well as in toy retailers.
