Vehicle Vault Fun RunSaturday, 16 July 2016

9:00 a.m.Our July Fun Run will get us back to our car roots. We’ll be visiting a mind-boggling car collection with a scenic drive to follow. We might even pick up a few Paved Peaks

& Passes, Parks and ‘Marks stops. If you haven’t picked up your pass-port yet, there’s still time to get one.

Our destination is the Gallery at the Vehicle Vault located at 18301 Lincoln Meadow Parkway in Parker, CO. The Vehicle Vault is home to an awesome collection of cars. The heart of the business is the museum, which features automobiles as old as the 1906 Success, to classic 1950s and 1960s racing cars. There is a 1954 Mercedes-Benz Gullwing, which is considered the

crown jewel of the collection because it is so rare and has only 400 original miles on it. The museum also has a Maclaren SLR and two 1914 Mercedes-Benz town cars that have been meticulously restored.

‘ROUND THE BENZ

After two lackluster performances and results at the Canadian and Monaco Grand Prix races, Nico Rosberg’s dominating win at the European Grand Prix puts him back

in control of the 2016 Drivers Champion-ship. With 25 points for the victory and teammate Lewis Hamilton’s fifth place finish, Rosberg’s lead in the champion-ship increased to 24 points. Rosberg was so dominant that he pulled off a so-called “Grand Slam” - pole position, race win, and fastest race lap. Rosberg now has 5 wins this year, including the first 3 races of the season and, as I previously noted, every driver who has won the first 3 races has gone on to win that year’s championship. Rosberg now has 29 ca-reer wins and holds the dubious distinc-tion of having the most career victories without a F1 championship. The season is not even half-way complete, but Nico should still go on to win this year’s cham-pionship.

The European Grand Prix was held in the city of Baku, Azerbaijan. It is on the west coast of the Caspian Sea, approximately 1100 miles from the Bosporus Strait, the traditional line between Turkey/Asia and Europe. However, Azerbaijan is now shown as part of Europe in most world atlases. The more important factor is that they paid their exorbitant fee to Formula 1 and designed a spectacular 3.7 mile

city street race course. The design of the track was a challenge for all of the race teams because half of it was through the narrow streets of Baku’s Castle District, which called for high aerodynamic down-force on the race car wings to increase the grip for the many challenging cor-ners. The other half was on modern wide streets, including a 1.25 mile street that called for low aerodynamic downforce for high top speed. The dominating perfor-mance of the Team Mercedes AMG race cars showed once again how they are the class of the field with both cars show-ing great grip and stability in the Castle District and the highest speeds on the straightaways.

On every race track so far this year, Team Mercedes AMG has shown, just like in 2014 and 2015, that they have the fastest and most balanced race cars, clearly the best in the world. They’re showing the world that “Das Beste Oder Nichte” (the best or nothing) is the motto that always guides Mercedes-Benz.

On a more local note, we’ve got some more great driving coming up as the weather heats up. Join us for our trip to the Vehicle Vault in Parker, CO on Sat-urday, 16 July. Their car collection is one of the best in the area. We’ll do some scenic driving, some gawking at awe-some cars, and some gustatory sampling of Colorado cuisine. We have a lot of fun on these drives and I encourage you to join us.

As always, drive safe, and I will see you down the road.

Saturday, 13 August 20162:00 p.m.

The Mile High Section is in charge of the Joint Section Picnic this year. After three con-secutive years at Absher Acres, we’re planning to give Karen and Clark a break.

The Mile High Section has moved the date for the picnic to Saturday, 13 August. They thought our July fun run was such a good idea that they’re planning the picnic at the Vehicle Vault, located at 18301

Lincoln Meadow Parkway, Parker, CO, on Saturday, 13 August at 2:00 p.m. The cost is $30.00 per couple and $20.00 per single. The cost includes admission, tour

and picnic lunch.

This is always a popular event and a chance to reconnect with our northern neighbors. We will enjoy picnic fare in an awesome venue. Plan to join our fellow MBCA members from the north in this joint venture. Please RSVP by 6 August to Bob Mashburn

at [email protected] or by calling (303)988-2710.

Breakfast & President’s Rally Saturday, 20 August 2016

9:00 a.m.Plan to join us at 9:00 a.m. for our month-ly Pikes Peak Section breakfast at the Egg & I Restaurant, located at the Citadel Crossing Shopping Center.

After breakfast, at approxi-mately 10:30 a.m., we will start the President’s Rally. This is a time-honored tradition for our Section and our president Andrew always is up for the chal-lenge of putting together a fun time.

As you know, 2016 is a U.S. Presidential election year, so the theme of the rally will be, appropriately, U.S. Presidential cam-paigns and elections past and present.

We hope you will “jump on the bandwagon” and “keep the ball rolling” (hint, hint) and join us for breakfast and a rally. The entry fee is only $15 per car, which sounds like a “fair deal” to me.

Please RSVP to Andrew Nelson at 719-634-7522

2017 G550 4x42 by Viknesh Vijayenthiran

Mercedes-Benz’s G-Class has been in production for almost four decades but the rugged, go-anywhere SUV only gets better with age thanks to the series of updates made over the years.

For the 2017 model year, the G-Class gains a new G550 4x4² variant. The G550 4x4² features the same V-8 as the regular G550. What makes the vehicle unique are its portal axles, which raise the ride height

to more than 17 inches and increases the width of the vehicle by 9.0 in at the front and 10.0 at the rear.

The 2017 G-Class range goes on sale this September, though the G550 4x4² only arrives early next year.

“Big Plans!”

Breakfast & Buffalo Bill - 17 September 2016Did you know that Buffalo Bill Cody, famous American scout, bison hunter, and showman, is buried in Colorado? After breakfast on Saturday, 17 Sep, we will be travelling to the Buffalo Bill Museum and

Gravesite outside of Golden.

The Museum features over 3000 sq. ft. of exhibit space focusing on the life, times, and legacy of this American hero. We’ll take a self-paced tour that ends up at the Buffalo Bill gravesite with an awesome view of the valley and Table Mountain. Admission is $5 ($4 for seniors).

The flamboyant Cody had a remarkable life. He fought nine

battles against Indians and was awarded the Medal of Honor. He earned his nick-name for his sharpshooting accomplish-ments while shooting buffalo to provide food for workers laying the railroad west.

For a few decades at the end of his life, Cody might have been the best-known person on the planet. His acclaimed Wild

West show toured the world for more than three decades, starting in 1883.

He and his troupe displayed amazing horse-riding and shooting abilities, showed Americans and foreigners alike a real herd of buffalo (by then nearly extinct in the wild), and through feats of cowboy derring-do, ignited the idea of the modern-day rodeo.

Buffalo Bill also earned a fortune and lost it. He came to Denver frequently, visiting his sister and hanging out with range-rider pals. Cody had retired from his show-biz days when he died there in January, 1917.

Lance Michaels, Mercedes-Benz of Colo-rado Springs, Parts Dept. Manager, is an award-winning Buffalo Bill re-enactor and historian. He will be on hand at breakfast to provide little known details about this historical icon and he will also conduct us on a guided tour of the museum.

Please plan to join us for this unique op-portunity to hear some Colorado history. Contact Judy Bennett, [email protected], if you have any questions.

Georgetown Loop Fun Run - 15 October2016On Saturday, 15 October, you are in for a treat. After our monthly breakfast, Henry and Sylvia Russell have planned a road trip to Georgetown, CO where we will board the Georgetown Loop Railroad for the ultimate fun run.

The Georgetown Loop Railroad was one of Colo-rado’s first visitor attrac-tions. Completed in 1884, this spectacular stretch of three-foot narrow gauge railroad was considered an engineering marvel for its time.

The fun run, starting at the Egg and I restaurant, will take us north and west to the railroad depot in Georgetown. The loop will take us between George-town and Silver Plume across four bridges around two loops and rise of 640 feet.

This will be an exciting fun run and there will be plenty of beautiful, colorful Colorado scenery. We are hoping to see some of the Colorado wildlife, so bring your cameras to save your memories. The cost is $36.95

per person and well worth the cost.

If you have any questions, please contact Henry and Sylvia Russell at [email protected] or give them a call at 719-599-5503.

Self Drive Tours of Europe by Andrew GanzMercedes-Benz Classic has partnered with a German leisure tour operator to offer guests the ability to rent a vintage SL road-ster for a scenic, pre-planned drive through some of the best parts of Europe.

Mercedes says it and Stuttgart-based Nos-talgic Tours will have on offer either W113 (1963-1971) or R107 (1971-1989) SLs for the new travel programs, which are struc-tured to allow guests to drive various differ-ent cars during their journeys.

Nostalgic itself has been in the classic car tour business for more than a decade, although this particular program is one of its more ambitious.

Guests will pay 1,975 euros (or about $2,260) for an all-inclusive tour of either France or Italy that includes an orientation of the vehicle, a tour book, a tour guide who speaks English, airport transfers, and accommodations for two people. The tours are for groups of 18 people, presum-ably meaning that nine SLs will go out on each event.

A support crew will also follow the classic cars in case there are any issues that need to be rectified en route.

The SL is one of the industry’s longest-running nameplates, and the W113 and R107 are generally considered the two most classic roadsters, if you exclude the W198, aka the 300SL.

The Pikes Peak Section got a first-class tour of our beautiful part of Colorado on Saturday, 18 June, courtesy of our presi-dent Andrew. We started out in the park-ing lot of the Egg & I restaurant after our monthly breakfast. Then it was on to a tour of “historic, iconic, quintessential Colorado Springs” and surrounding towns.

What was fun about this rally was that it took us to places in our city that most of us had been to before, but we got to see them through a new prism while learning a bit of history along the way.

We answered questions about everything from the iconic America’s Mountain, Pikes Peak, to the 7-11 Velodrome, to multiple first churches, to the historic National So-ciety of Colonial Dames and quintessential Colorado Springs’ Johnny’s Navajo Hogan. But we weren’t done yet - we wended our way to Manitou Springs to taste the water that made the town famous. That was a first for most of us and it was delicious. Back to

town and lunch at historic Patty Jewett Golf Club, founded in 1898 (third oldest public course west of the Mississippi and a crown jewel of our city).

While we were waiting for lunch, President Andrew offered up the answers to the rally questions. Amid groans and contested ques-tions, he overruled objections and commiserated with those who lost the argument. Winners earned gift certificates to historic, iconic, and quintessential local businesses. The end results were Patels in fourth place (The Perk Cof-fee); Bixlers in third place (Josh & John’s Ice Cream); Kerbs in second place (Wimberger’s Ger-man Deli); and Bennetts in first place (Patsy’s Candies). Everyone agreed it was an awesome rally, a beautiful drive, and a delicious meal. Well done, President An-

drew!
