‘ROUND THE BENZ

With a dominating 1-2 finish in the 2015 Formula 1 season opening Grand Prix race in Aus-tralia, Team Mercedes AMG proved to the racing world that

their 2014 world championship was no fluke, and that they will be hard to beat in every race this year.

The only question is: Which of the two re-turning teammates will win, Lewis Ham-ilton or Nico Rosberg? Further bad news for the competition: the 2015 Mercedes AMG racecar’s power unit is rumored to produce about 50 more horsepower to go along with overall improved handling. Plus, from a purely aesthetic point of view, the new racecar just looks bet-ter, and the power unit sounds better, with the turbo V-6 producing the proper engine noise that you would expect from a Formula 1 car.

Speaking of noisy engines, if you’re a fan of Carroll Shelby and the fabulous race cars he produced, please join us for breakfast on April 18 at the Egg & I (Cita-del Crossing). After breakfast, we’ll head north to Boulder for a tour of the Shelby American Museum. You’ll also have the choice to visit the nearby Leanin’ Tree Western art museum and sculpture gar-den. Admission is free and the gift shop offers amazing reproductions.

Also at the April breakfast, you’ll be able

to get your Paved Peaks & Passes, Phase II passports. This is the follow-on to our very successful driving program from last summer. This year, we’ll be driving to small-town southern Colorado to visit historic markers, landmarks, and other points of interest (POIs). This self-paced driving program travels to 40 small towns, all within a day’s drive of Colorado Springs, where you’ll discover fascinating Colorado history. We’ve got both mountain views and prairie vistas in store for our participants. Almost all of the locations are well way from the congestion of Denver, I-70 or I-25, i.e., Far From the Madding Crowd. Rules are similar to last year. So get your passport and hit the road(s) less travelled with us this summer.

On Sunday, April 26, Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs again will host our semi-annual Do-It-Yourself Tech Session. This is your chance to get your car on a lift and take care of some springtime service items. There are many quick and easy projects you can do yourself at huge savings. All you pay for are the parts, at our Pikes Peak Section mem-ber’s 20 percent discount, and a $10 fee. A service tech is always on hand to give you advice on your project, but you will need to bring your own tools. Don’t miss this opportunity! This is one of the many benefits of membership in MBCA and the Pikes Peak Section. To reserve a service bay, please call Dave Williamson, 719-575-7976.

As always, drive safe, and I will see you down the road.

‘ROUND THE BENZ

A few months back, I wrote about my im-pressions of a visit to the classic car show, ‘Techno-Classica,’ held in Essen, Germany each year. This month I’m sharing another classic car opportunity should you be in the area on a European trip. This one is avail-able year round and is free.

Right next door to Essen sits Düsseldorf on the Rhine River, the major city of the region. In Düsseldorf, you can find a col-laboration of classic car enthusiasm and in-dustrial redevelopment in ‘Classic Remise Düsseldorf,’ a unique classic car haven in Germany. Interestingly, ‘remise’ as used here is an archaic English usage meaning ‘coach-house’. And what a coach-house!

In Düsseldorf, they’ve taken a derelict railroad locomotive roundhouse and reno-vated it to serve as a one-stop center for classic cars. There you can find classic car parts and service specialists; clothing and accessories; classic car storage includ-ing transparent, climate controlled booths; and open storage as well, with a central display area with a restaurant/bistro. It’s a storage facility and museum in one. With the unique storage approach, everything is visible yet secure, although only the open display area has attendants keeping the cars clean and dusted. It’s a testament to the classic car culture in Germany that the

cars there are not just your typical ‘club’ cars.

The Sunday I was there, I saw everything from an Edsel to a 540K and just about everything in between. It would put most classic car museums to shame. Open 7 days a week, it’s a popular week-end destination for enthusiasts and local car clubs on ral-lies and can be booked for spe-cial occasions.

If you would like to see more of ‘Classic Remise Düsseldorf’ or ‘Classic Remise Berlin’, you can visit their website at www.remise.de.

Saturday, 18 April 20159:00 a.m.

Summer is just around the corner and we’ve got places to go and people to see in our beautiful Benzes. The Do-It-Yourself Tech Session is just the ticket to get you out on the road safely. It’s also one of the more tangible benefits of MBCA member-ship in general and the Pikes Peak Section in particular, all courtesy of Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs.

Get your motorized icon up on a lift to check out the undercarriage. Swap out those snow tires, replace worn-out wind-shield wipers, adjust your coolant levels,

and check your belts and hoses. These are all quick and easy projects you can do yourself at a huge savings. All you pay for is the parts (at our 20% discount). A $10 service bay fee will go to the Club.

You can do it all on Sunday, 26 April, at 10:00 a.m., at Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs. As usual, the dealership will have the parts department open and techs will be on hand to guide you through your proj-ect. Bring your own tools though.

Give Dave Williamson a call at 719-575-7976 to reserve your lift. He provides the space and the techs and may even throw in some coffee and doughnuts. See you there!

Colorado Railroad Museum - 16 May 2015

“Visit the

1880’s-

replica Depot

Museum....”

Our Section has scheduled a tour of the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, CO on Saturday, May 16. Based on the number of persons attending the event we can ask for a volunteer tour guide, as well as receive a 15% discount in admission, provided we have 20 or more in our group. Admission is normally $10 per adult or $8 per senior.

Stroll the mu-seum’s 15-acre rail yard with over 100 narrow- and standard- gauge steam and diesel locomotives, passenger cars, cabooses, HO model railroad and G-scale garden railway on their 15-acre rail yard.

Watch as Colorado rail-road history is brought back to life in their round-house restoration facility

with working turntable. Visit the 1880s-replica depot museum, housing thousands of rare artifacts, along with the Denver HO Model Railroad Club’s operating model layout replicating the various types of Colorado mountain railroading. Take home

a memory from their Depot General Store.

As we near the tour date, we will ask that members call Stan or Mary Bixler at 719-597-1281 to sign up for the tour. Plan ahead to join us.

Star Party - 20 June 2015Because the first Star Car Star Party (21 June 2014) was such a success, we have decided to do it again this year. We are in the early stages of planning. The Star Party will be held at Asher Acres near Pey-ton.

The date will be 20 June 2015. This time we are planning a few minor changes. There will be a $5 per person charge that will help cover the costs of hot dogs, soft drinks and water. We have also decided to do a modified pot luck. If

you have a favorite dish, please bring it along. We will have hot dogs and Sherry

Sheehan’s Hot Dog Sauce (which was a big hit last year). We have a few other surprises in store for everyone, so stay tuned. We’ll release more info as we get closer. We will have telescopes available, so bring your lawn chair and spend another nice evening under the stars. If the weather does not cooperate, we’ll have movies for

your entertainment.

Joint Section Picnic - 11 July 2015Contrary to what you may have heard or read, this year’s Joint Section Picnic will be held at Maguireville in Monument, Colo-rado.

Maguireville began many years ago when Jim and Donna Maguire purchased a horse ranch just east of I-25 in Monument. Donna set out to furnish the house with antiques from the late 1800s and early 1900s. Jim caught the “bug” and from there the “bug” just grew and grew. The interior of the barn was made over into a large social area surrounded by the original horse stalls converted into reproductions of businesses from rural America. Each business is fully outfitted with original furnishings that Jim has collected over the years. As Jim turned over more of his ownership responsibilities at Overhead Door to his son Kevin, this gave him more time to collect memorabilia for Maguireville, and collect he did, and still does.

A friend of mine who was making his first visit to Maguireville recently stated, “This

is one of the best keep secrets in El Paso County.” For more information on Maguire-ville, access the Web.

If you would like to spend a few hours with old and new “Star” friends, enjoying ca-tered barbeque while surround-ed by memora-bilia from your parent’s and grandparent’s era, plan to at-tend this year’s Joint Section Picnic. All you need to do is RSVP by July 6, 2015, and arrive with $10 for each adult and $5 for each child under 12. Plan to arrive between 12:00 PM and 12:30 PM. Food will be served at 1:00 PM. To RSVP, contact Clark or Karen Absher at (719) 749-2621, or [email protected]. Directions to Maguireville will be provided in next month’s newsletter.

Star Party - 20 June 2015

President’s Rally - 18 July 2015The 2015 President’s Rally is coming soon. This year’s theme is inspired by the 1980s “Back to the Future” movie trilogy.

In “Back to the Future II”, Marty and Doc traveled ahead thirty years into the future, from 1985 to 2015. In the 2015 movie future, people drove flying cars, rode hoverboard-type skateboards, and used Mr. Fusion compact power supply units. Obviously, our 2015 is quite different from that vision, but it will make for great rally

questions.

The movies covered the years 1885, 1955, 1985 and 2015; the rally questions will be about those same years. Questions and clues will cover movie trivia and Mercedes-Benz-related history from those years. The rally should take 2-3 hours, ending with lunch at an appropriate restaurant. The cost is $10 per car. Please RSVP to Andrew Nelson, 719-634-7522 (home), or [email protected].

Pikes Peak Section Enchanted Weekend

“Highlights

include driving

the Enchanted

Circle Scenic

Byway and

visiting the

Black Mesa

Winery....”

The Pikes Peak Section is headed south to New Mexico this Fall for a 3-day regional event called The Enchanted Weekend. We plan to leave Colorado Springs on Friday, 9 October for Taos, NM. Highlights of the weekend include driving the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway and visiting the Black Mesa Winery and other points of local inter-est.

The Enchanted Circle is an 83-mile loop through mountains, valleys, mesa, and national forest, all unique to northern New Mexico. We’ll drive from Taos to Questa via Red River, Eagle Nest and Angel Fire. This beautiful countryside offers dramatic moun-tain vistas of aspen and pine in the shadow of 13,000 ft Wheeler Peak, the highest point in the state.

Then it’s a 37-mile drive down a winding canyon road along the Rio Grand River to the Black Mesa Winery. Black Mesa Win-ery has garnered multiple “Best of Show”, “Best in Class” awards, and “Double Gold” and gold medals in international competi-tion. Black Mesa’s wines meet the high-

est standards for wine, not only for New Mexico, but also on the international stage. Need more activities? Taos Pueblo is a living Native American community and National Historic Landmark. The multi-story adobe buildings have been continuously inhabited for over a 1,000 years.

We will be staying at the historic La Fonda de Taos Hotel on the Plaza. Our renowned hospitality suite will be open on Friday and Saturday nights before and after dinner. The event cost for this weekend is $37 per person and includes a continental breakfast, box lunch, snacks and drinks in the hospitality suite for two nights, dash plaques and prizes. We plan to return home Sunday, although it’s possible to stay over to Monday and have breakfast with anyone who wants to spend Sunday shop-ping or sightseeing.

Contact Dave Carpenter at [email protected] for more information or to sign up. Registration deadline is 1 September 2015. Please plan to join us for this delightfully enchanted weekend.

Big Cats Recap After our monthly breakfast on Saturday, March 21, Club members and guests, 23 in all, caravanned out to Serenity Springs Wildlife Center (www.serenityspringswild-life.org) in Calhan. It was a perfect spring day for visiting the big cats and assorted exotics—sunny and mid-60s.

Our tour guide, Lisa, introduced us to lions, tigers and bears (oh, my!), as well as leopards, caracals, couti-

mundi, ring-tailed lemurs, Chip the binturong, a wolf and a dog. She educated and entertained us along the way with interesting

stories about the animals. Several are retired performers, with careers in movies, television, or photo opportunities. Others were pets, until their owners could no lon-ger care for them. Some came to Seren-ity Springs because the facilities where they lived closed down. All have a forever home, because founder Nick Sculac’s policy is to never turn an animal away.

Serenity Springs

is a great place to spend a couple of hours in the sun. Join us next time--you might even have the opportu-nity to play with a tiger cub!

Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs helped the Pikes Peak Section celebrate our latest new car deliveries in style! They turned over the entire showroom floor to two of Mercedes’ finest creations. Steve and Barb Dierks and Charlie and Judy Ben-nett took delivery of 2015 SL400 roadsters. Diamond White and Mars Red respectively, the cars were quite the lookers. Pikes Peak Section members gathered to check out the new rides and compare features. Then we adjourned to the downstairs showroom for toasting beverages and snacks, courtesy of Dave Williamson and Andrea Hansen. We swapped more tales before the lucky new owners drove off into the night. Congratu-lations to Steve and Charlie!

Paved Peaks & Passes, Phase IIPaved Peaks & Passes (P3), Phase II is coming soon to a Mercedes-Benz near you. Last summer, we drove to 30+ picturesque mountain passes within a day’s drive of Colorado Springs and had a blast. This year, we’re back with P3 POI!

We selected 47 points of interest in more than 40 towns across southern Colorado – all less than 200 miles from Colorado Springs. The POIs are located across the plains and throughout the mountains. Each location commemorates its Colorado heritage or is just plain quirky or, perhaps, both. You will be traveling the lesser highways and byways of our region where traffic and crowds are not issues – and the roads are all paved, of course. “Far From the Madding Crowd” will be our mantra this summer.

You’ll be look-ing for Colo-rado roadside historical mark-

ers for the most part. We’ve discov-ered a ton of his-tory and fascinat-

ing facts about our state….markers that we never took the time to stop and read…historic districts in rural towns that valiantly document their early history and continual struggle for survival. Many are in areas where you will want to explore further, to shop or dine, or just learn more about the local area. We encourage you to dine at Christine’s in Rocky Ford or El Pueblocito in Westcliffe or to shop for homemade cheese and jam at the Naked Goat in El-bert. These are just a few of the treasures you will discover.

The rules are almost the same. Check out the list of POIs to see what interests you. Design a route that takes you to the POI. Find the POI, take a picture of you and your car there, email the picture to Judy, and get your passport stamped. When you have accumulated 40 stamps (Beulah counts for 2!), you will be eligible for the POI patch for your jacket. The patch will be presented at the 2016 Pot Luck Dinner.

There are some dif-ferences in Phase II. We’ve included geo-graphic coordinates as well as street ad-dresses, to help you find the sites. We’ve also added a question

about the POI that you will answer to help you remember your visit. The only other change is that we’ve eliminated the time limit from this and the original P3 pass-port. You can drive both passports at your leisure.

The POI passports will be ready by the April breakfast. The cost for the passport for existing program participants is $25 and includes the passport and the jacket patch. For new participants, the cost is $85 and that includes the P3 signature jacket, the patch, and a map. If you are interested in joining this unique driving experience, please contact Judy Bennett at 719-576-9737, or email her at [email protected]. Kick back and get ready to drive the road(s) less travelled with the Pikes Peak Section.
