Defibrillators in Wendover The South Central Ambulance Service is encouraging all public places to have defibrillators available and Wendover is responding. The original defibrillator in Wendover High Street seems to belong to Smile Design at number 33. The staff at Smile Design have been trained in its use for years and their window now displays the green heart and lightning logo in the window. Clearly this is only available during their working hours.
John Colet Academy also possesses a defibrillator some staff have been trained in its use. Again, it is only available during school hours.
A kind benefactor has donated two defibrillators which will be purchased through Wendover Parish Council and placed subject to planning permission. The hope is to put one inside the heritage phone box near
the Clock Tower and the other near the ATM outside Budgens. Many thanks to Dary Sweeney who is paying for the installations. More and more people in Wendover are learning how to use these machines but fear not, if you phone 999 the emergency operator will talk you through the procedure. The machines are designed not to treat inappropriately. If you have a smartphone, you can download the FREE app AED nearby and you will be able to locate the nearest available defibrillator.

HS2 update On 28 April 2014, the House of Commons passed the Second Reading of the Hybrid Bill, which means that HS2 is now approved in principle. With the three main political parties in favour of the scheme, this was unfortunately not unexpected. Our MP, David Lidington, chose once again to be absent from the Vote and has repeated the assertion that he has more influence as a Minister than a back bencher. He has since declared that he will vote against the scheme on the Third Reading if further tunnelling is not secured for our area.
Following the Second Reading there was a short window for Petitioning (closing date 23 May), which was our last chance to formally request improvements to the scheme. As a result of several workshops, leafleting, and help from local volunteers, we believe Wendover and the surrounding area submitted a significant number of Petitions, which will now be considered by a Select Committee who can recommend changes to the scheme.
We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who Petitioned and helped others to Petition, and very special thanks
must go to Antony Chapman for his tireless work and leadership in coordinating the local Petitions and providing vital information and suggested Petition wording to help people navigate the complex process.
The next stage for Petitioners will be to prepare for the possibility of speaking in front of the Select Committee. Wendover HS2 intends to hold workshops in the coming months to help Petitioners prepare for this. With the common theme locally being the insistence of a fully bored tunnel throughout the whole of the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, work is now commencing to build evidence that the initial construction cost of a fully bored tunnel will be far outweighed by the benefits that a fully bored tunnel would bring. Wendover HS2
HS2 decision “dangerous precedent” The Chiltern Society said on 30 April the decision to route HS2 across the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty sets a dangerous precedent for other protected areas of landscape in the country. The Society, which has over 6,700 members working to protect and enhance the
Chilterns, will now petition Parliament to have HS2 tunnelled under the entire AONB in order to reduce the environmental damage the railway will bring.
Chairman David Harris said: "The Chilterns AONB is supposed to be a protected landscape. It is the only AONB in Britain that will be crossed by HS2 in its first and second phase. Yesterday's decision by MPs sets a dangerous precedent. From now on areas of legally protected countryside, such as National Parks and AONBs, are not as safe as they believe they are from infrastructure projects.
"HS2, as proposed, will now travel through the middle of the Chilterns AONB at its widest part, inevitably damaging its integrity.
“The travesty is that other routes between London and Birmingham that could have avoided this sensitive and unique landscape were not considered properly.
"Most MPs have shown that ensuring unique and fragile landscapes are protected for future generations is low down among their priorities."

Wendover’s favourite barmaid, Dolly Saville, reached a remarkable landmark when she turned 100 years old on Saturday 19 April 2014. A party was held in her honour at her workplace since wartime, The Red Lion, Wendover. Dolly was born in Eton in the South of Buckinghamshire a few months before the outbreak of World War I. She featured as Local Face for Wendover News in May 2002; have a look at the story on wendovernews.co.uk/news/dolly-local-face . To celebrate this momentous occasion, The Red Lion hosted a party with five generations of Dolly’s family attending, along with local residents, friends and colleagues. The day was full of stalls to raise money for Dolly’s nominated charities and the Fuller’s dray horses, Griffin and Pride, got in on the action by providing local children with trips around the village. This was featured at the time on Wendover News Facebook and wendovernews.co.uk/news/dolly-is-100 . A lovely YouTube video was prepared by local resident Gordon Findlay and her story was picked up by the BBC, ITV, in Ireland and the USA. Martin Howard, Manager of The Red Lion, said: “There were lots of surprises for Dolly including a beautiful birthday cake designed and made by the chocolate company Choccywoccydoodah, 100 roses prepared by The Flower Gallery, various presents and even a letter from the Prime minister. She had already received her
card from HM the Queen. Everyone worked so hard to make the day special for Dolly and her family – even Sir Jackie Stewart, the motor racing legend, arrived with a signed magnum of Champagne.”
When Dolly started at the pub a pint cost a mere eight pence and London Pride wasn’t on the bar until 1959. During her time at the Red Lion Dolly has seen two monarchs take the throne and 14 Prime Ministers in Parliament. Dolly loves meeting people and sharing a joke when she is behind the bar. Over the years Dolly has shared a joke with famous faces including Pierce Brosnan, Dame Margot Fonteyn and Dame Vera Lynn. Commenting on the day, Dolly said: “I’m overwhelmed at all of this. I’ve no idea what you will do next year – but I will still be here and I’ll still be working.” Many of Dolly’s greatest fans have received beautiful thank you cards for all their support associated with the celebration. £1231 was raised on the day for Dolly’s four nominated charities: Great Ormond Street Hospital, Thames Valley & Chiltern Air Ambulance, SSAFA, Chilterns MS Centre. The bouncy castle also raised £50 which will go to Shooting Star Chase. Thanks to all who donated!

Her Majesty the Queen’s Colour for RAF Halton will be paraded and supported by the Central Band of the Royal Air Force. The Parade will be reviewed by the Mayor of Aylesbury, and a Dakota from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will fly past at 1400 hrs. On completion of the Reviewing Ceremony, RAF Halton will march through the town with full ceremonial and fixed bayonets finishing at the Dais at Market Square.
New E-Book by Wendover Resident What would you do if you were a pre-lingually deaf person who found herself parenting a disabled child? For Melissa Mostyn, it was a crash course in both first-time parenting and cerebral palsy, the condition her daughter Isobel was diagnosed with. Before she became a parent, Melissa had worked with people with disabilities in a variety of empowered and leadership roles, ensuring that she brought a rather divergent attitude to the table. Nevertheless she was unprepared for the conflicting emotions that arose within after Isobel was born, and so began her blog, The Mostyn-Thomas Journal. Nearly four years and much blogging later, My Daughter and I is the result.
Pressure on BP event drops For the fourth year running the Rotary Club of Wendover and District, in conjunction with the Stroke Association, arranged for qualified staff to be at Wendover Library Annex on Thursday 24 April to take blood pressure and provide tea and coffee and biscuits. This year several people were advised to seek further advice from their GPs. Word about the importance of knowing your blood pressure is obviously spreading and the Health Centre has a machine allowing patients to monitor themselves.

Local News Wendover Remembers Wendover Remembers held its first community meeting on Wednesday 30 April. The Wendover Remembers Working Group will be meeting on Monday 9 June to look at how it can help make all the good ideas that came from this meeting happen in Wendover. During the Centenary of WWI Wendover News will be in close contact with Wendover Remembers. The intention is to track events on a monthly basis.
The remembering is starting already as RAF Halton has an event on Thursday 26 June when there will be a flypast to honour James Thomas Byford McCudden VC, DSO & Bar, MC & Bar, MM (28 March 1895 – 9 July 1918). A new museum is being opened in his honour.
New Saints, new icons On the last Sunday in April the world watched Rome as two Popes were canonised. The media asked what was happening at a local level. The Roman Catholic Parish Priest for St Anne’s, Wendover is Father Wayne Coughlin. He serves from Damian House in Great Missenden where he is also Parish Priest for Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. He commissioned an icon of each Pope Saint. Bella Cherry from Chesham (see photo below) was the iconographer of Pope Saint John XXIII who will eventually stay in St Anne’s Church in recognition of his ecumenical work. Constantina Wood from Aylesbury was the iconographer of Pope Saint John Paul II (the Polish Pope) which will eventually stay in Great Missenden where the Church has been serving a Polish Community since World War II. Meanwhile, the new papal icons are on tour in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Northampton.

Hay Fever Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen that is common in spring and summer.
Symptoms include sneezing; an itchy, runny or blocked nose; and itchy or watery eyes; they are typically worse in the evening and when outside. The commonest type of hay fever is allergy to grass pollen, which peaks in June and July.
If you suffer from hay fever, symptoms can be prevented by reducing your exposure to pollen as much as possible by: staying indoors as much as possible, and keep windows and doors shut; avoiding cutting grass, large grassy places, and camping; washing your face or shower after being outdoors; and keeping car windows closed (consider buying a pollen filter for the air vents in your car).
It is local NHS policy that medicines for hay fever should be bought rather than prescribed. All hay fever medicines are available over the counter at pharmacies, but it is worth shopping around to get the best prices. Generic medicines are usually cheaper than equivalent branded products.

The following medicines may be helpful, check suitability and doses with a pharmacist when buying them for a child:
Antihistamines such as loratadine 10mg or cetirizine 10mg once daily relieve many of the symptoms of mild hay fever, such as sneezing, runny nose and itchy eyes.
A steroid nasal spray such as beclometasone may ease a blocked or runny nose. This is best started before symptoms start, if not it may take 1-2 weeks to have effect. It is important to use a nasal spray correctly – follow the instructions that come with the product.
Sodium cromoglicate eye drops may help relieve itchy or watery eyes.
Treatment should be continued on a regular basis throughout the hay fever season.

Young Enterprise Success A team of Year 12 John Colet students competed at the Young Enterprise County Finals, in May. The team, named Are We There Yet?, created, marketed and sold a CD featuring songs and stories for young children to enjoy on car journeys.
At the County Finals, held in Milton Keynes, four team members presented their product to 100 people. Sam Bailey, Dan Lee, James Bowers and Harrison Speight represented Are We There Yet? and spoke confidently to the judges about their product. The team were thrilled to be awarded the prize for the most innovative product, and were the only team from Aylesbury Vale to win an award. Unfortunately, they didn’t progress to the next stage.
The team’s journey began back in April when they were selected to participate in the County Finals. Another John Colet Young Enterprise team also presented at this earlier stage. A Taste Of Wendover created a locally sourced recipe book, featuring recipes from local restaurants and members of the local community.
Head of Business Studies, Mark Gardiner, said: “This year’s Young Enterprise teams have been a real credit to the school. Both teams have performed brilliantly, and both were commended for their creativity and
entrepreneurial spirit, as they were the only teams in the competition to create their product from scratch. This has arguably been the most successful year we’ve had in Young Enterprise since I’ve been at the school.”
John Hampden Fun Run & May Fayre The John Hampden School Wendover Fun Run on 27 April has been successful in helping raise funds for the school. We are still waiting for some sponsorship to come in but we are over £1000 already. We had 50 adult runners and 53 children. The winners of the 5K were Callum West and Kathy Klein, and the winners of the 10k were Stephen Cliffe and Jodie Digby.
Thank you to Harpenden Building Society for providing the refreshments, Cafe in the Woods for providing the water station, the Forestry Commission for allowing us to use Wendover Woods and Glynn McConnell from Britvic who gave us the sports drinks. The event was organised by JPR Fitness, helped by Matthew Frost, Sarah Fishman and Sam Wilson, and many more helpers on the day.
The John Hampden School May Fayre was a great success with the children enjoying a wide range of stalls and entertainment. We succeeded in raising over £2000 for the school. Many thanks to all the families who attended and to all the businesses who donated fantastic raffle prizes.

May, June and July will see the arrival of the LTA’s much heralded Great British Tennis Weekends (GBTW)– the aims of which are to get more people playing tennis and to have fun! The dates have been chosen to take place in the build up to the excitement of the Wimbledon Championships and to convert the excitement generated by our world class players down to grass roots level. The 2014 GBTW follows the success of last year’s one-off Weekend which saw over 7,500 people take to the courts of 39 venues on a single weekend. This year there are more than 1,500 venues!
Events are taking place across the county over four weekends, and they are just our part in the hundreds of Open Days which are to take place throughout the country on 21st-22nd June, 28th-29th June and 19th-20th July.
Tennis venues are offering free tennis and coaching for people of all ages and abilities and the days are being promoted by the LTA across all media to try to help promote our sport and our clubs. If you have not organised an event yet or want to do more, it’s not too late, and quite easy to get something organised. In many cases days can be staged as part of an existing open day
promotional strategy.
Halton Tennis Centre and Penn & Tylers Green Lawn Tennis Club are typical of those already organising events. Halton for example, on the first GBTW in May offered adult coaching sessions, mini tennis, cardio tennis and junior tennis whilst Penn hosted an open “Parent and child” tournament.
Marlow Tennis Club have already organised some open days in the run up to the GBTW’s, one of which they say added some 20 members so far thanks to their promotional efforts throughout the town.
“We are really excited to be bringing Great British Tennis Weekend back this summer. Tennis in Britain has enjoyed some fantastic results during the last 12 months with the Davis Cup team reaching the quarter-finals and Andy (Murray) having won Wimbledon last year,” said LTA Chief Executive, Michael Downey, “For us, it’s about capitalising on the interest in our sport, so when people at home are inspired by our players on court, we offer them an opportunity to get on court without barriers getting in the way.”

Junior 5-a-side Football Success! For the second year running, a local junior 5-a-side football team represented South England in the Powerleague 5-a-side National Finals held in Manchester in May. The team qualified after winning the Under 16 South Regional Finals at Basingstoke in April against tough competition, having previously also won the Area Tournament, held locally at Stoke Mandeville in February. The team, consisting mainly of Wendover Under 15s, has been put together this season by player manager, James Patton, who was part of last year's successful Under 14 team. James would like to thank all the players for their support and commitment, with special thanks to Hossam Fowlie for taking on the role of goalkeeper and performing outstandingly. Despite the majority of the team (5 of the 7) being under 15, they weren't fazed, united as a team and confidently asserted control to succeed against older opposition in the Under 16 group.
Wendover Men’s FC Congratulations to the Wendover First Team who reached the Marsworth Cup Final. Unfortunately they lost 4-0 to Bucks CC FC, but can go away
with their heads held high, knowing they reached the final through merit whereas Bucks CC reached the final via default. On their last league game of the season, the team drew 3-3 at home with Long Marston. Wendover First XI finished the league campaign in 5th place in the Aylesbury District League Division One. Wendover Reserves managed a final day victory, winning 3-2 away against Bucks CC Reserves. The club finished 9th in Division 3. The Reserve Team are looking for a new manager ahead of the new season.
During the summer months, training is from 8.30pm every Tuesday at Wendover playing fields at John Colet School. Thank you to all who have supported the club in any way this season. Wendover Youth Centre Given £250 Gift Sandra Maizels, Chair of Wendover Rotary, came to the Centre’s AGM last month and was moved to report their urgent need back to Rotary, who concurred it was a worthy cause. Dary Sweeney, Budgens proprietor, also attended the AGM and has pledged his support.

Mid Bucks Beekeepers Association The mild winter resulted in the lowest loss of colonies for many years, locally our members reported less than 8% losses with only a few being due to disease. The result has been that the colonies have come into the Spring stronger than usual and throughout May we had unprecedented numbers of swarms of honeybees. Cricket Wendover Cricket Club’s junior section has proved really popular this season. Sixty-four turned up for U7 & U9 training and 28 for U11. Unfortunately with these numbers, any new enquiries in these age groups will regrettably be put on a waiting list. In matches, the U9 B team has won both their games, whilst the A team is yet to play. The U11s won in the 1st round of the Bucks Cup. The U13s also made it through the 1st round of their cup and have won their 2 other games by convincing margins.

More on Red Rose Garage Mr Chris Kingham of the Princes Risborough Heritage Society advises that he picked up a copy of Wendover News and was interested in the article on William Lancaster and the Red Rose Garage. He told Wendover News: William Lancaster purchased a bungalow in Peters Lane, Monks Risborough/Whiteleaf called “Hebron” and renamed it “Pat’s Cottage”, but was only there for a year or two before his adventures. A Plea for Responsible Dog Ownership While out walking my dogs recently, I and two other dog walkers witnessed a lady screaming for her dog to return to her, which it did not. We discussed that if she actually came into the field then she would stand more chance of retrieving her wayward dog which was now chasing and stampeding the sheep and lambs around the field and over the fence. Once this lady got hold of her dog, she left the field, leaving the other gentleman in the field to help the sheep back over the fence. Shouting at your dog will only make things worse. If you see sheep and you don’t trust your
dogs 100%, keep them on a lead as farmers do have the right to shoot! Another point linked to dog walking is the removal of dog bins. We are lambasted as evil people who let our dogs foul the paths and cycle lanes. The majority of dog owners “scoop the poop” but are foiled it seems recently by the removal of the red poo bins. Where are they going and who is removing them? Surely we should be getting more rather than less so that there are more places for us to help keep the paths clear.

Crime Rate in Wendover Over the last few years I have often heard people say that the crime rate in Wendover increased during the construction of the bypass in 1997/98. I have asked Thames Valley Police for the figures for the years before, during and after construction, but the only figures available are for 1998/99 and 1999/2000. Does anyone have any facts relating to this, not just anecdotal evidence? If so could they please send it to me at [email protected] .

Comments on the HS2 Bill I have supported David Lidington's stance on HS2 since the route was announced as I believed as a minister he was best placed to argue his constituents case for better compensation and mitigation.
Through his position he has been able to gain direct access to the key decision makers in Government and HS2 to lobby and argue his constituents’ case.
David Lidington is an excellent MP for this constituency but as Councillors for Wendover and Halton both Peter Strachan and I are disappointed that he did not vote against this Bill which establishes the principle of HS2 as the vast majority of his constituents in Wendover, Halton, Stoke Mandeville and Aylesbury would have wished.
I have conveyed this to David Lidington who assures me that if a fully bored tunnel and other mitigation measures are not forthcoming he will resign before the third reading of the Bill.
As Chairman of the Aylesbury Conservatives I and the Association will continue to fight HS2 on behalf of local people by lobbying the coalition government, working with community groups and by both speaking out against this proposal and fighting for better mitigation.

Do You Cycle in or around Wendover? If you are a cyclist in and around Wendover, the appalling state of our roads both residential and arterial can’t have escaped your notice. Our local road network has at best extremely uneven surfaces, at worst a full spectrum of killer potholes that can easily wreck car tyres and wheels but can be lethal to cyclists if they have the misfortune to drop a wheel into one. Negotiating these hazards requires the utmost attention from cyclists with the obvious detriment to their concentration on the normal hazards of riding in an environment dominated by bigger, faster motor vehicles.
Cyclists have justifiable cause to complain about the rapidly deteriorating state of the County’s roads but how many of them do just that and complain? One suspects very few. Complaining seems to produce results, especially if one draws attention to the far more serious nature of potholes to the cyclist as opposed to the car driver. On several occasions in recent years, as a mobility impaired cyclist, I have complained about the surface of the residential road in which I live. Action has been taken within days of my complaint being received, to patch at least the Category 1 holes (40mm or more deep).
It’s surprisingly easy to complain, especially if you take the online route. Roads are the responsibility of the Highway Authority, which is under the
control of the County, namely Buckinghamshire County Council. Wendover actually has its own nominated highway technician, Rob Anderson, who can be reached through the mailbox of the Transport for Buckinghamshire section of Bucks County Council’s web site. Alternatively, use the internet. Once in the BCC’s site, using the search facility “A –Z of Services” go to Transport for Bucks and then select a sub-sector called Report It. Couldn’t be easier, and if my experience has been typical there could be improvements soon to your local cycling experience!

Just Going Out for a Cycle... I will be in a London to Paris cycle ride 2-5 July 2014 in aid of Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity. So far I am the only one supporting FNHC. The ride starts between 0630 and 0700 on 2 July at Crystal Palace and we ride 90 miles to Dover. We have to be there by 1800 to catch the ferry to Calais where we spend the first night. The next three days are 85, 75 and 65 miles arriving at the Eiffel Tower on Saturday 5 July. Four consecutive days covering so many miles requires a lot of training and I have been working extremely hard since December. Jack in the Box Pre-school will be 20 years old in September, and to celebrate they are opening their doors for three afternoon sessions—increasing the pre-school provision for parents and carers in Wendover. Jack in the Box Playgroup was the brainchild of Linda Ayres and Brenda Edwards, opening in the Clay Lane Scout Hut (which opened March 1990) in September 1994. They were already qualified and practiced Playgroup leaders and wanted to offer something special to the toddlers of Wendover. There was great sadness when Brenda Edwards died suddenly in November 2010. Happily, Linda Ayres continued to lead until her retirement in July 2012. Ruth Blake has worked at Jack in the Box (JitB) since it opened. At the time she was a volunteer helper with needlecraft at John Hampden Infant School but a friend who was on the staff at JitB couldn’t do the first week so Ruth stepped in. She has been there ever since and both her grandchildren have passed through JitB. Ruth is a great advocate of Learning through play, which introduces toddlers to numbers and simple literacy and writing skills using all sorts of games and crafts. This is delivered through the free play of the children and observation by the
assistants. Voluntary helpers, as she had been, are few and far between because now-a-days the typical route of an assistant like Ruth is to train for qualifications on-the-job, aiming for level 3 Diploma in Childcare. This enables them to complete the paperwork including learning journeys and contribute to parent consultations. Staff like Ruth are easily identified by their uniform of a tee-shirt and sweatshirt depending on the weather. The current Pre-school Manager is Tracey Buttle, one of seven members of staff and a volunteer. Her children attended JitB and she started as a parent on the committee. When her younger child joined in 2009, she started training and became an assistant then a supervisor. Tracey finds her pre-children experience in business has been invaluable and she plans to take JitB onto afternoon working in the Autumn. The current hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 12 noon. In September they will be open until 3pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays

school was the appointment of Gill Osmond as the Chair of the committee. She brought with her experience as a former teacher at John Hampden Infant School. Having taught Infants and Nursery children for 30 years she was appointed an Early Years Advisory Teacher in Bucks. The Scout Hut setting is ideal as the Scouts are benevolent landlords eg they made the barbecue bases the right size
for Pre-school sandpits. The grounds facilitate freeflow access to outdoor and indoor play. A team of 8 staff means plenty of people to supervise the entire premises. They even have a kitchen garden where they grow their own carrots, beans, peas, radishes, tomatoes and flowers.

View from the Chair This time of year usually brings many reviews, changes and looks forward to the new Parish Year. We say cheerio to James Grant whose business commitments do not allow him to continue as a Councillor and also to Sue Gilbert who has been our Assistant Clerk for the last two years and now moves on to become Clerk to Haddenham PC. Many thanks to them both and good luck in their future endeavours. We hope to co-opt new Parish Councillors at the Council Meeting on 2 June to serve until the Parish elections in May 2015. If you are interested please contact the Clerk.
As I write this we are moving towards the end of May which means only one thing as far as I’m concerned – Wendover Celebrates. A huge undertaking which could not take place without the support of Wendover Parish Council. Two years ago and again this year, WPC provided a grant to help get things off the ground, as I write, tickets are selling fast, the weather is improving, and we are looking forward to a great event. By publication the event will have passed and will have been judged a success or not. Whether financial, practical or just by being there my thanks go to everyone from WPC and the community who have been involved, you know who you are, but my personal thanks especially go to Emma Carroll who as Queen Bee of the whole event has worked tirelessly and efficiently to make sure that this event is a community success.

HS2 Petition The Parish Council’s Petition against HS2 has been submitted to Parliament and is a worthy tome which outlines all the mitigation options that could and should be considered by the Select Committee. Thanks to the working group, especially Marion Clayton and our Clerk for their hard work in ensuring the petition accurately represents the views of Wendover residents. Thanks also to expertise from Wendover Society for ensuring that the WPC petition allied with other petitions from the local community.
Assistant Clerk Vacancy The position is initially for a 3 – 6 month contract of 25 hours a week. The hourly rate will be between £9.35 an hour and £10.04 an hour depending on skills and experience in financial and general administration and minute taking. Working from the Clock Tower the role would include Clerking for the Planning Committee which meets in the Library Room on Monday or Tuesday evenings on alternate weeks. Time off in lieu is given for these meetings. Within the next six months the Council anticipates advertising to recruit permanently for this position, which may be for additional hours. Clock Tower We are pleased to report that the vital structural repairs to the Clock Tower have finished on time. It’s been a rollercoaster of a project with a high that not so much of the external timber needed to be replaced as we had at first thought, to a low that stripping back the lead beneath the bell space
exposed a lot more rot than we’d expected. The next excitement was caused by the way the roof tiles had originally been fitted. More tiles than expected were broken during the removal phase. A source of replacement tiles, sufficiently authentic to meet the Historic Buildings Officers requirements, were found and fitted. The clock has never been better. The original bell wheel has been renovated, the bell and mechanism have been serviced and the clock faces spruced up. Through it all the contractor Colin Pearcy and the project manager Charles Mallard have kept the project on target.
From a Mule to a Gator The PC have replaced the groundsman’s vehicle with a much more useful and safer truck. The old Mule had no means of securing tools or materials inside it, no windscreen wipers, no heater/demister nor any way of keeping the rain out. This basic specification meant that at times when its rugged 4X4 character would be most useful, it wasn’t possible to operate it safely. The new Gator is a smart looking truck and is very definitely an all weather, go anywhere vehicle that will be a great asset to the Parish for years to come.
Poppies As part of the WWI commemoration poppy seeds have been scattered on Rope Walk Meadow. Some will flower this year but most will lie dormant until after the flail cut and chain harrow at the end of the Autumn.
