$$$$$$DOLLAR $EN$E By

Sue Grubac

I was a good student, studying diligently, believing that at the end of 13 long years of school I would be prepared for the real world. I learnt about the reproductive cycle for the fi ve major classes of vertebrates (the mammals were most interesting!); I learnt about Reign of Queen Victoria (glad I never met her); I learnt all the rivers in Russia (never learnt the Canadian ones); I learnt how to write Haiku (that will never pay the bills!) and I learnt to add, subtract and multiply polynomials (among many other things) BUT no one ever taught me about money. I never learnt to balance a cheque book, I didn’t understand the rules of credit cards, I had no idea what a credit bureau was, they never taught me about investing and I had never made a budget. I graduated from high school with NO Financial Literacy.

By defi nition Financial Literacy is the understand-ing of how money works in the world: how to earn money, how to manage money, how to invest money (turn it into more) and how to donate money to help others. Financial Literacy is the set of skills that allows us to make informed and effective deci-sions with all of our fi nancial resources.

I learned Financial Literacy through the school of hard knocks; it’s not a route I’d recommend, the outcome isn’t guaranteed. I meet with people from all walks of life; I see a variety of nationalities, the young and the old.. The one thing they have in common is that they’re all struggling to manage their fi nances because their Financial Literacy is low. I can’t agree with them more when they say: “I wish I learned this in school!”

They didn”t teach me that in schoolFinancial Literacy is gradually being added to the school curriculum so I have hope that the next generation’s Financial Literacy will be much higher than the current generation. For those of you who are unable to take advantage of the new school curriculum, stay posted, I’ll be bringing you for tips to improve your Financial Literacy over the coming months.

After dying in an accident, three friends go to Heaven for orientation. They are all asked the same question: “When you are in your casket, and friends and family are mourning you, what would you like to hear them say about you?”The fi rst guy immediately responds, “I would like to hear them say that I was one of the great doctors of my time, and a great family man.”The second guy says, “I would like to hear that I was a wonderful husband and school teacher who made a huge difference in the children of tomorrow.”The last guy thinks a minute and re-plies, “I guess I’d like to hear them say... look, he’s moving!

4 LOCATIONS TO SERVE YOU BETTER!

1. It pays to be a lap dog. Three dogs (from First Class cabins!) survived the sinking of the Titanic – two Pomeranians and one Pekingese.

2. Chase that tail! Dogs chase their tails for a variety of reasons: curiosity, exercise, anxiety, predatory instinct or, they might have fleas! If your dog is chasing his tail excessively, talk with your vet.

3. Seeing spots? Or not… Dalmatian puppies are pure white when they are born and develop their spots as they grow older.

ABORIGINAL DAY

K’omoks National Aboriginal Day, June 21

Celebrate the Cultural Diversity of First Nation, Metis and Inuit people from across Canada.National Aboriginal Day June 21 from 11 am - 6 pm in Courtenay at the Big house, hall and grounds.Free outdoor event with Music, Dance, Food and the Arts.Enjoy an artisan marketplace, a children’s play area, storytelling, performances from local and visiting dance troupes and an Indigenous Fashion showTraditional cuisine - wild Sockeye salmon cooked over an open fire, buffalo burgers, candied salmon and fresh bannock with homemade berry jams. Find us on facebook for more details;

This July 2014, members of the K’omoks First Nation will embark on a traditional and spiritual journey to Bella Bella for the Qatuwas “People Gathering Together” festival. We are pulling together to save the Great Bear. The Heiltsuk are expecting over 100 canoes from Nations all over the coast, 1000 canoe pullers, and as many as 5000 visitors. K’omoks’ journey begins June 30th 2014.

History of the Tribal JourneyThe Tribal Canoe Journey is a revival of the traditional method of transportation and is a significant cultural experience for all the participants. The canoe culture had all but disappeared until 1989 when the “Paddle to Seattle” was initiated during the 100th anniversary of Washington Statehood. That year, the state and local tribal governments signed the Centennial Accord recognizing tribal sovereignty. In celebration, coastal tribes organized the Paddle to Seattle to help revive their canoe culture. Each year, a different nation hosts other Indigenous nations coming from coastal communities. Participants learn traditional canoe carving and decorating, and learn to work together as a “canoe family”. All Tribal Journeys activities are family-friendly, drug- and alcohol-free. On arrival, the host tribe holds a Welcoming ceremony, with the canoe families asking permission to land. Cultural festivities, such as drumming and dancing, last for days.
