The Filipino Community have another venue to show our Filipino Pride

and share our beautiful heritage to the world. Add to your list, The Calgary Stampede Parade (Prelude) as Possibilities in Motion (PiM) Foundation will proudly continue to facilitate our Filipino Community Prelude Entry every year. With PiM’s dedicated partners, donors, volunteers and support of its sponsors, the Filipino-Calgarian community can expect an outstanding display of ‘Bayanihan’ in our City through the prelude parade and eventually through our very first Filipino Community float.

For its second year PiM Foundation, its members and volunteers have had the greatest honor to be able to work with our Filipino Community’s many different amazing groups, associations, organizations and businesses. Because of team work, the Filipino Community have successfully represented The Philippines and once again became a part of The Greatest Show On Earth. In fact, the Calgary Stampede Committee (Prelude) was worried that because of the recent flood that challenged our city, there would not be a Filipino Entry as some of the participants have pulled out from the show. We proudly replied to them, ‘Hell or High Waters the Filipino-Calgarians will be there to

Very talented Filipinos and non-Filipino group who are multi-awarded gave us top quality performance and authentic cultural dances have done our community proud. They gave a performance that is especially dedicated to our Calgarians and neighbouring towns who suffered from the flood disaster. Our spirit as Calgarians and as Filipinos will not be washed away but will only make us stronger and a better community united.

According to the Calgary Police Services, over 300,000 thousand of proud Calgarians and people from all over the world sat and witnessed the parade kick off to Calgary Stampede 101. Plus the millions of viewers from around the globe as our entry was covered by many international television stations, including TFC Balitang Canada, a ABS-CBN broadcasting station in the Philippines. (July 14, 2013 issue)

The showcasing of our beautiful Filipino Heritage in the streets of 6th Ave from 1st Street up to 10 Street during the Stampede prelude parade (8:00am to 9:00am) was only icing on the cake. The display of unity by so many individuals and groups was profound. Business supporters (Pacific Hut Restaurant, Greatway Financial, UMAC Cargo

She delights in watching movies the traditional way by sitting at the theatre with popcorn rather than at home. She loves books and is right now reading Dan Brown’s Inferno.

A tennis fan trapped in a hockey country

No, tennis is not boring. It’s the most thrilling sport I know of.

It’s a physical battle. You chase the ball for three to five hours. Some games are more than five hours. In fact, the longest tennis match in history lasted 11 hours played over three days at the 2010 Wimbledon Championships. Oh, was I lucky to have witnessed that!

It’s an emotionally tough sport. You play alone (except for Doubles). No coaching, no talking, not even sign language. You sit by yourself during breaks with cameras on your face. When things go wrong, you absorb all the boos from the crowd. Swearing and smashing of racquet are not allowed.

It’s a mentally challenging sport. You make a decision in a

split second, there is no time for pondering. Whether forehand or backhand, you decide only after the ball is suspended in the air. Sometimes you go by instinct, you run to the left not sure if the ball will go that direction. Sometimes you gamble, you approach the net with no assurance of scoring.

Tennis breaks racial boundaries. If basketball is for the United States and soccer is for Europe, well, tennis is for all continents. Regardless of height and hair color, this sport is open to the world. Asians included. When China’s top ranked player, Li Na, entered the world’s top ten few years back, she signalled the arrival of Asians in tennis.

Above all, there is drama. Some players actually smash their racquets, out of frustration. But immediately they receive warning from the umpire. Champions cry, they drop to the ground and praise heaven, they rip their shirt off from relief, and in between all these, history unfolds.

A huge tennis fanI am a patriotic tennis fan.

That is the most moderate way I can describe my love for the sport. I am a loyal follower for about three decades now. I wake up at two in the morning to watch the finals. I shun time difference. At the Australian Open for example, I am wide awake at the wee hours even as the whole of Canada sleeps. One time, my neighbour told me it was so bizarre that she smelled popcorn at three in the morning. I just smiled.

I skip appointments to watch the finals. If it happens that I am out of the house, I watch in my phone. The

players are too small they are like ants running around in my screen.

I have some tennis T-shirts. I have a racquet pendant. I have pictures of the world’s top players mounted on my fridge. I confess I am a tennisholic and I don’t know what medication to take.

Fast forward One day in 2009, I migrated to

Canada, a world renowned hockey country. I witnessed the nation’s obsession for hockey. I felt so alone in my tennis world. I had no one to talk to. Not one of my officemates was into my sport.

I would check the TV and all sport channels were showing hockey, even as a tennis grandslam tournament was on going. I then would just go online and be contented with a live streaming.

When Eugenie Bouchard, the highest ranking Canadian female player, qualified to play for the French Open this year, I rejoiced. I joined her fans club and read all news items about her. I was so happy when, from rank #77 in the world, she became #66 in just few weeks. When she played against Maria Sharapova, I cheered for her. Only with Bouchard, I would go against Sharapova.

Last month at the Wimbledon, when Bouchard beat former world #1 Ana Ivanovic at the third round, I celebrated and danced in the office. I asked myself, what will I do if a Canadian reaches the finals? I might paint my face with a maple leaf.

I give the same kind of support to Milos Raonic, the highest ranking Canadian male player, #15 in the world. I am a staunch Rafael Nadal

follower but if he plays against Raonic, I will cheer for the latter. All because he is Canadian and I live in Canada.

WishesI hope Bouchard and Raonic

will pave the way for Canada to love tennis, like hockey. I don’t believe the cold weather is reason enough to shun the sport here. Some of the world’s top players come from winter countries.

I know a major grandslam or a Canadian Open is wishful thinking

for now. Maybe not until a Canadian hit rank #1. But in tennis, everything is achievable. I was there when Sharapova won her first grandslam. I was there when she became world #1. I will be there when Bouchard wins her first grand slam. I will be there when she becomes world #1.

Big dream, I admit. But this is tennis. Where big dreams must technically start from the very bottom.

No, tennis is not boring. Come sit with me at two in the morning, I promise you will love the popcorn.

Isang karangalan para sa ating komunidad ang ginawa nina Angie Sta. Ana, at ng mga kasama

niyang tenants sa isang apartment na kanilang tinitirahan sa Westend. Sa katunayan, sa tinagal-tagal ng mga Pilipino dito sa Winnipeg, ngayon lang muli nagkaroon ng pagkakataon na makipag-ugnay ang mga tenants sa pangunguna ni Angie Sta. Ana, at mga kasamahang sina Ana Tasico, mag-asawang Alag, V. Lampa, L. Redoblado, M. Teano, M. Ramirez, at E. Evangelista at iba pang mga tenants sa Filipino Journal upang ilathala ang kanilang magandang balita sa pagkapanalo nila laban sa isang landlord, bilang desisyong ibinigay ng Residential Tenancies Commission kamakailan lang.

Ang mga kababaihang ito ay nagkaroon ng lakas na loob at matigas na desisyon na ipaglaban ang kanilang karapatan. Ang pagtaas ng renta, sa 38.15% ay hindi makatao. At sa kanilang mga hearing, nagtistigo sila sa mga ginawang kapalpakan ng landlord. At dito nabulgar, ang dagdag na halaga sa mga resibong inilahad ng may-ari ng apartment. May isang kababayan tayong may kompanya at nagbigay ng quotation sa may-ari ng apartment. Nagtitistigo ang ating kababayan na wala silang ginawa sa apartment. Nagtaka ang kababayan kung bakit may resibong isinumite ang may-ari. Pero ang ginawa ng landlord, ginamit ang stationery at ginawang resibo bilang gastos sa renovation. Lahat yata ng kompanyang nagserbisyo at nagsupply ng mga gamit ay nagtestigo pagkatapos tanggapin nila ang subpeona upang tumistigo sa hearing. Nalaman ng tanggapan na iniretoke ang mga resibo at kakaiba ang halagang inilahad ng may-ari

ng apartment at ng mga resibo ng mga kompanya. Maraming dagdag na halaga ang nabulgar sa hearing. At kung hindi nagreklamo ang ating mga kababaihang ito, tagumpay ang landlord. Nagkaroon sila ng lakas na ipaglaban ang kanilang karapatan bilang mga tenants. At sa aming mga panayam, doon ko nakita at nadama ang lakas ng kanilang desisyon na ipagpatuloy ang kanilang laban sa kabutihan ng mga tenants.

Sa kasalukuyan, libu-libong mga Filipino ang dumadating dito sa Winnipeg. Salamat sa Provincial Nominee Program at ang Philippines ay isang nangungunang bansa na pinagmumulan ng mga bagong immigrant o bagong dating. At sa pagkakataong ito, marami ang dumadating na nais magkaroon ng matitirahan at mga apartment naman ang kanilang pansamantalang tirahan. Gusto ng mga landlord na ang kanilang mga tenant ay mga Filipino. Mahusay at marunong mag-alaga ng kanilang tirahan att madaling paki-usapan. Kung minsan, sa mga masamang landlord, ang mga Filipino ay madaling lukuhin at madaling takutin. Walang reklamo kung patungan man ng mas mataas sa antas ng regulasyon sa upa sa apartment o dili kaya, wala silang magawa kung ang landlord ay hindi sinunod ang mga pangako katulad ng bagong fridge, oven or anumang gamit sa apartment.

Mula pa noong magkaroon kami ng Filipino Journal noong 1987, maraming tumatawag sa amin upang magpatulong sa kanilang mga problema sa trabaho, o sa kanilang landlord, o dili kaya sa kapwa nating Filipino. Inihahain nila ang kanilang problema at ang sabi naman namin, ang batas dito ay pantay-pantay. Hindi katulad sa atin na ang batas ay kakaiba:

may batas para sa mga mayayaman; at may batas para sa mga mahihirap.

Ang payo naman namin ay magkaroon ng pagkakataon na tumawag ng pulis, at magkaroon ng record; magpunta sa mga tanggapan at ihain ang mga reklamo. Karamihan, hindi natutuloy dahil natatakot daw sila. Baka daw sila ipadeport. Baka daw sila saktan. Baka daw sila balikan. Huwag na lang daw at bahala ng ang Diyos. Hindi natutuloy ang mga habla dahil sa ang mga witness ay walang panahon sa korte. At saka baka daw silang inglisan nang inglisan.

Marami na kaming karanasan sa mga pagtulong, at sa pagbibigay ng payo sa ating mga kababayan kung ano ang dapat gawin. At ang karamihan

ay hindi natutuloy ang kanilang layunin. Busy daw sila. Hindi daw sila makaalis sa trabaho. Natatakot daw sila. Ang iba, baka ipadeport. Paano tayo uusad kung ganito tayo?

At sa mga nakaraang mga kaso,may mga kababayan din tayo na nagkaroon ng lakas upang makipaglaban. Marami na din kaming natulungan sa pamamagitan ng pakikipag-ugnayan sa Filipino Journal at sa ibang mga lider ng ating kumunidad. (Nililipon namin ang mga lathala upang isa-aklat ang mga pangyayaring nagbigay dangal sa ating mga kababayan.)

Pero, sa nangyari kina Angie Sta. Ana at ibang pang mga tenants sa naturang apartment, ay isang tagumpay sa mga Filipino dito sa Winnipeg. Nagsakripisyo sila ng kanilang oras upang ipaglaban ang kanilang karapatan. And ibang mga tenant ay may mga trabaho at naghahanap-buhay. Nagsikap silang dumalo sa mga hearing. Kaya, isang makabayaning-saludo sa kanilang tagumpay. Sabi nga ni Angie Sta. Ana: Siyam kaming nag-object sa itinaas ng renta ng landlord. Kung hindi kami nakipaglaban, kami ang kawawa. Hindi na namin kaya ang mataas na renta. Konti lang naman ang nakukuha naming pension o sa sweldo. Kaya ang masasabi ko sa ating mga

kababayan huwag kayong matakot, wala kaming politikong kinapitan, at bilang mamayan, may karapatan tayong iharap ang mga problema sa pamahalaan. Huwag kayong pipirma o sasang-ayon sa anumang gusto ng inyong landlord. At ang lahat ng mga papeles ninyo ay ipunin at itago. Naku, napakarami palang kalukuhan ang ibang mga landlord. At isang malaking pasasalamat sa Diyos, sa kanyang tulong at awa."

Ang desisyong ito ay ipadadala ng Commission sa tanggapan ng Attorney General at Minister of Justice at sa City Hall upang imbestigahan ang naturang kaso.

At kung may problema kayo sa inyong landlord, makipag-ugnay sa Residential Tenancies Branch, sa 302-254 Edmonton at may telepono: (204.945-2476). Lahat ng rental increase, ay aaprobahan ng tanggapang ito at kung may objection, may hearing at magkakaroon din ng hearing sa Residential Tenancies Commission,1650-155 Carlton St., across Winnipeg Convention. At makipag-ugnayan sa Filipino Journal dahil sa kasalukuyan may isa pang reklamong inihain ang iba nating mga kababayan sa naturang tanggapan.

Tayong mga Pinoy ay kilala sa pagiging “Sakop-Oriented,” lalo na kung patungkol sa

pagtatagumpay ang kaganapan. Inaangkin ng karamihan ang tagumpay ng iilan o iisa. Subalit, ang kabiguan ng isa ay kabiguan lamang niya. Sa kadahilanang ito, lalong dumarami ang nabibigo dahil nagtatalaga sila ng mga batayan kung paano at kailan sila aasenso sa buhay. At iyon ay ayon o nakasalalay sa taong kanilang inaasahan. Tila baga alikabok, ang layo ng liliparin ay depende sa ihip ng hangin.

Halimbawa, si Kulas ay nakapagtapos ng kursong abogasiya o medisina. Mapapansin natin na

Ang problema, kukunin pala ang puhunan sa isang tao na papaalis pa lamang. Nakakatuwa ba ito o nakakatawa? Para bang alikabok, kung nasaan ang hangin hanggan duon lang ang kayang liparin.

Teka, teka, bakit nga ba natutuwa ang isang Pinoy? Ang sagot: dahil alam niya na siya ay personal na makikinabang. Tulad ng magulang na tumustos sa pag-aaral ni Kulas. Natural lamang na sumarap naman ang kanyang buhay dahil makapag-aakyat na ng karangyaan ang isang abogado o doctor sa kanilang hagdanan. Kung minsan nga, tila baga isang puhunan ang anak o sinumang tinulungan na naging asensado na ang buhay. Kunsabagay, talaga namang ganun ang buhay—merong pagpapalitang panlipunan. Paagahan o una-una nga lamang yan. Tumulong ka at ikaw ay tutulungan. Pero, sana naman, tumulong ka rin kapag ikaw ay natulungan. Huwag nawang maputol sa’yo ang henerasyon ng bayanihan o damayan.

Pagtutuwid ng mga Kawikaan at Paghahambing: Gaano sila katotoo at kahalaga?

Sabi nga: “Ang maagang ibon daw ay nakakadagit ng maagang bulate.” Wasto ba ang kawikaang ito?

Mainam ito kung ikaw ang ibon. Paano naman kaya kung ikaw ang bulate?

Ito ang isa pang tanong para sa atin: “Sa palarong basketball, sino ang naliligayahan, iyon bang nanood o yaong naglalaro?”1. “Ang nanonood ang naliligayahan!”2. “Ang naglalaro ang naliligayahan!• Sino nga ba mga ate at kuya? Pili na ng wastong kasagutan. Una o ikalawa?• Alin ang kahambing ng hangin at alin naman ang alikabok? Una o ikalawa?

Kayo na po ang bahalang humusga mga kababayan, mambabasa at tagasubaybay ko at katuto! Subalit, kung nais n’yong marinig ang aking panig upang tayong lahat ay may tugmaan ng paniniwala o sususugang pamantayan at sabay-sabay na maging produktibong alikabok, maaari ninyo akong sulatan sa aking email address: [email protected].

Ano sa palagay mo? Handa ka na bang iwaglit na muna ang rehiyon o organisasyon mo, upang yakapin ang iyong pagka-Filipino? Isang araw, tatawagin kang natatangi o katangi-tanging Filipino. Kilala sa pagiging masipag, magalang, at mapagmalasakit saan mang parte ng mundo maparoon o madako.

Lahat naman tayo ay tila mga alikabok na ipinadpad lamang ng hangin patungo sa Lupaing ito ng Canada. Ano ang iyong plano? Maaari mo bang ibahagi sa pamamagitan ng Column ko dito sa Filipino Journal nang sa ganun ay ating mapagsaluhan?

Minister's Statement on World Population Day 2013Ottawa - As the world’s population continues to grow well past the seven-billion mark, we are presented with both a challenge and an opportunity: nearly half of the world’s seven billion people are under the age of 25, and more than 90 percent of them live in developing countries.

Youth in developing countries are an incredible resource and hold tremendous potential to make great contributions to their communities, societies, and economies. Yet, this potential can evaporate when expectations of education and jobs go unmet. In both developed and developing countries, investing in youth during their formative years can yield tremendous, sustainable

results. This is the reason why the Government of Canada is focusing its efforts on improving access to education and basic health care for young people.

After all, health provides a foundation for learning. Improved health allows children to attend school regularly and maximizes their classroom time. Improving the health of mothers, newborns, and children, and reducing the number of preventable deaths, are priorities for Canada. We are leading a global effort with the Muskoka Initiative to mobilize others to help reduce maternal and infant deaths, and improve the health of mothers and children in some of the world’s poorest countries. The goal of the

Muskoka Initiative is to prevent the deaths of as many as 64,000 mothers and 1.3 million children under the age of five. So far, our existing programming has achieved tangible results. In Bangladesh, more than 230,000 children have been vaccinated against serious childhood diseases. In South Sudan, more than 3,000 women delivered their babies safely. And in Ethiopia, we have provided vitamin A supplements to 1.5 million children under the age of five.

In addition to education and health, young people and children also require protection and security. Often, the scourge of child labour and forced early marriages make children subject to violence,

exploitation, and abuse. Canada is committed to protecting the rights of children and youth to help them build better futures.

On this World Population Day—and every day—we will remain resolute about bridging the gaps in global health, education, and security for the world’s most vulnerable, particularly youth. Canada remains dedicated to making a real difference by helping those most in need around the world build prosperous futures for themselves, their families, and their communities.

New AINP “Alberta Work Experience Program” launched recently

Great news for TFWs in Alberta! Effective June 20, 2013 the Alberta provincial government announced the launch of a new program under the AINP program called – Alberta Work Experience Program. This program allows eligible Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWs) in Alberta to apply to nominate themselves for permanent residency in Canada. There is no need to have their employer nominate them. Depending on the skill category of the TFW ( ie. NOC category: O, A, B or C), the worker must have at least 2 years or more of Alberta work experience in in-demand occupations and meet other program and federal government selection criteria.

This new category is accepting applications only until November 28, 2013 (ie. the date of the application package is post-marked or dropped off in person at the AINP office). It is a time-limited opportunity. So if you are eligible… you should apply as soon as possible!

A. Alberta Work Experience Program - Selection Criteria1. The TFW must be currently residing in the province of Alberta. 2. At the time of application, the TFW must be working full-time in Alberta and have a valid Work Permit with temporary resident status from Citizenship and Immigration Canada to work in Alberta in one of the selected eligible occupations. 3. The TFW must intend to continue to reside in and work permanently in Alberta in one of the eligible occupations. 4. At the time of application, the TFW must show that he/she has been working full-time (ie. at least 30 hrs./week – excluding overtime) in Alberta in one of the eligible occupations. If the current occupation is a 2006 National Occupational Classification (NOC) skill level:

a. NOC: 0, A or B occupations, the TFW must show you have been working full-time in Alberta in an eligible occupation for two (2) out of the past three years; or b. NOC: C occupation, you must show you have been working full-time in Alberta in an eligible occupation for three (3) out of the past four years. 5. The TFW must submit a complete Alberta Work Experience Category Application for Nomination and other required supporting documents.

B. List of Eligible In-Demand Occupations under the ProgramThe eligible occupations have been identified using the 2006 National Occupational Classification (NOC) code and skill level. If an applicant’s current occupation’s skill

level changed from the 2006 NOC system to the 2011 NOC system, the application will be considered on the basis of the NOC code that is most beneficial to the applicant.

Listed below are the in-demand occupations under NOC: O, A, B and C that are eligible only under this program:

C. What work experience in Alberta are considered to be eligible

Authorized work experience obtained in another eligible occupation will be considered where the occupation falls within the same industry/occupational group (ie. within the same NOC Skill Type column of the NOC Matrix) as your current occupation.For example, if an applicant is

working as a Finance Clerks Supervisor (NOC 1212) at the time of application, the applicant would need to demonstrate two out of three years work experience (as NOC 1212 is a skill level B occupation). o If the applicant had experience during the three years as an Accounting Clerk (NOC 1431), the applicant’s experience in these occupations would be eligible for consideration, as both occupations are on the eligible occupations list and both occupations are under the “Business, Finance and Administrative Occupations” column of the 2006 NOC Matrix. If the individual’s prior experience was as an Accountant (NOC 1111) instead of NOC 1431, the applicant’s work experience would also be eligible, as NOC 1111 is on the eligible occupations list as well, and

falls under the “Business, Finance and Administrative Occupations” column. o If the applicant’s experience during the three years was as a Customer Service Representative – Financial Services (NOC 1433), this experience would not be eligible as this is not an eligible occupation, even though it is still in the same column in the matrix. o Any work experience in an occupation outside of the “Business, Finance and Administrative Occupations” column, regardless if experience was gained working in an occupation on the eligible occupations list, would also not be eligible.

NOTES: 1. Unauthorized employment (e.g. a violation of terms and conditions of a work permit) will not be counted towards meeting this work experience criteria. 2. If you work in a regulated occupation in Alberta, you must demonstrate that you have the required certificate, licence, and/or registration. The eligible occupations list above shows which occupations require certification, licensing or registration.

D. Required English Language Test Scores The TFW must submit official test results showing that he/she meet the minimum language standards, and the test results cannot be more than two years old at the time of application to the AINP. The only English Language official test results that the AINP will accept are listed below:1. IELTS – General Test Exams with minimum scores of: a. Listening: 4.5 b. Reading: 3.5 c. Writing: 4.0 d. Speaking: 4.0

2. CELPIP – General Test Exams with minimum scores of: a. Listening: 2H b. Reading: 2H c. Writing: 2H d. Speaking: 2H This program is great news for TFWs whose employers do not want to or cannot nominate them under the regular AINP program. The program is also great news for semi-skilled workers – who were previously not eligible under the regular AINP program (ie. Accounting and Related Clerks, Shippers & Receivers, Machine Operator, Mineral and Metal Processing, etc.). Unfortunately, the eligible lists in this program do not include: Food Counter Attendants, Cashiers and Kitchen Helpers.

Composed of vocalist Basti Artadi, guitarist Manuel Legarda, bassist Mon Legaspi and drummer Francis “The Beast” Aquino, the band distinguished itself for winning numerous awards from NU107 Rock Awards, Awit Awards and the Malaysia-based AsiaVoize.

Wolfgang was formed in January 1992 in Manila. The band

holds the dissention of being the only Filipino rock band to release albums in Japan and the United States and for reaching Platinum record sales in the Philippines.

The original line-up broke up in 2002 but was reformed in 2007 with a different roster of musicians. On August 2012, the band released their new single and music video, "Sandata", which is part of their 7th album "Ang Bagong Dugo Sa Lumang Ugat". The album is released in installments, while the first part is "Unang Kabanata" and first done entirely in Tagalog.

Temporary foreign workers can now nominate themselves for permanent

residency under an expanded Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP).

Foreign workers in Alberta now have a new option to stay in Alberta permanently. The Alberta Work Experience Category of the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program lets eligible foreign workers apply to nominate themselves for permanent residency. They need to have worked in a key in-demand occupation for two or more years and meet other program and federal government requirements. More than 100 occupations are eligible.

The Filipino communities are growing in Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer & Fort McMurray. More & more events being passed along our way, we are looking to complement our team with volunteer photographers to cover all those events.

As with any community newspaper, we focus on local events such as community gatherings, picnics, sporting events, press conferences, dinners. Some gigs can be as quick as 15-20 minutes and other can be long, painful & boring. Our goal is to find photographers that we can assign work to on any given story. The majority of the events are during the evenings and weekend.

University of the Philippines Graduates in Edmonton Launches Alumni Association

A group of University of the Philippines (UP) alumni has established the University of

the Philippines Alumni Association Edmonton (UPAAE). The work to incorporate the new association began in June 2013 and the inaugural meeting was held on July 18, 2013.

An enthusiastic group of alumni who attended UP from the 1960s through the early 2000s convened to begin the review process of the association’s by-laws, choose the UPAAE logo, and brainstorm on worthy projects that will benefit the members, the Philippine community and the city at large. UPAAE’s first project is to support a world class Filipino ultra-marathoner and UP

alumni Cesar Guarin who is on a quest to become the first Filipino and first Asian to run the globe. He will be in Edmonton in October for a segment of his North American leg, and UPAAE will spearhead a 2.5K Family Run with Cesar on Sunday, October 27.

UPAAE was formed to pursue the following objectives: (1) to foster fellowship and cooperation among the members of the association, (2) to promote education and skills training through scholarships, bursaries, and similar programs, (3) to undertake projects and programs that will inform, support, and assist members and the community at large in areas of need (i.e., legal, medical, socio-

economic, and the like), (4) to support the promotion of Philippine culture and heritage; and (5) to provide a channel of communication between the University of the Philippines and the members of the association.

residency under an expanded Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP).

Foreign workers in Alberta now have a new option to stay in Alberta permanently. The Alberta Work Experience Category of the Alberta Immigrant Nominee

Program lets eligible foreign workers apply to nominate themselves for permanent residency. They need to have worked in a key in-demand occupation for two or more years and meet other program and federal government requirements. More than 100 occupations are eligible.

In Alberta, the unemployment rate has been consistently under

five per cent for the last year and we have a projected labour gap of 114,000 workers by 2021. Through the Alberta Work Experience Category, the Alberta Government is assisting temporary foreign workers with the skills needed in Alberta to stay permanently and keep our economy growing. The new category is taking applications until November 28, 2013.

Pateros Celebrate the Feast of St. Marta

The traditional procession to celebrate the feast of the Patron Saint of Pateros,

Santa Marta continued to become an annual event at the Emily Murphy park last Saturday July 20, 2013. Pateros, a town famous for raising ducks and producing the Philippine delicacies 'balut' and 'pinoy' was once again honored Santa Marta by celebrating and carrying the statute of Santa Marta around the park. Devotees dancing and swaying in sumba form of music hoping that their wishes be fulfilled. There was 'paagaw' to the guests and bystanders of candies, chips and cookies. Balut and pinoy eggs were given to sample and the fiesta menu included the famous duck caldereta. Art Santos the Hermano this year and the his family and extended families organized this traditional event for the past several years. It's a revival of the tradition that is celebrated in Edmonton every year.
