After an overwhelming response to our previous editions, a readership above 90,000 global Hyderabadis. It gives me great pleasure and pride to release the third edition of our magazine. This month, we look into Hyderabad’s heritage and what Hyderabadis can do to save it. Also, we learn about the Departed Kings of the Seven Tombs, discover how the beautiful month of june which bring back fond memories of our childhood, toh “jee le bachpan ke woh suhane din phir zara”. We also glaze upon how crazy the Hyderabadi public is when it comes to Salman Khan. We strive to bring you quality content every issue. Cricket has its own ways of being vengeful. In 2011, an Indian contingent with stalwarts like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman travelled to England with the prospect of ending

their respective careers on a high and give their fans a chance to watch them perform together one last time. At the end of the tour, a bruised and battered Indian ream returned-dejected and beaten by the English weather and a young English team. The high and mighty Indian batting had been done in.

Circa 2013, a new look Indian team with a handful of players from the 2011 team that toured England have exacted vengeance on English soil. And how. A team which left India soon after IPL edi-tion 6, shrouded in the spot-fixing controversy and without the big names who either hung up their boots or marred by injuries won all the matches and everybody’s hearts in the tournament with their clinical performances. The team went about in the most profes-sional way possible-they were not only unbeaten throughout the tournament, they had won all the warm-up games as well.

This made Team India only the second team in the world to win the ODI World Cup, World T20 and Champion’s Trophy and MS Dhoni, captain cool, the only captain in the world to have won all the 3 tro-phies. The team which left India, though strong on paper, wasn’t expected to be the frontrunner for the trophy. What worked in its favour was lessened expectation-the IPL spot-fixing fiasco put a damper on things.


The team was very well balanced with the players gelling at the right time. The mercurial rise of Sunriser Shikhar ‘The One’ is now well documented. Apart from him the batting just stuck. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma emerged from the shadows of their senior opening pair and forged an excellent opening com-bination-especially, Rohit Sharma, who despite all his talent has time and again fallen to his laziness and poor shot selec-tion. This time he batted with hunger and good temperament.

The middle order was mouth-water-ing with Virat Kohli, Dinesh Kartik and Suresh Raina with MSD and ‘Sir’ Ravindra Jadeja forming the lower middle order. Ravindra Jadeja performed the dual role of a lower middle order batsman and the second spinner with so much aplomb that by the end of the tournament he was the highest wicket taker, overtaking his senior R. Ashwin.

The bowling was fresh, young, energetic and exuberant, bearing the likes of swinging sensation Bhuvaneshwar Kumar as the strike bowler , Umesh Yadav, our very own Sunriser- Ishant Sharma and offie R. Ashwin. While the seamers did an excellent job by taking early wickets and denying good starts to the opposition, the tweakers Jadeja and Ashwin were equally important in striking at crucial moments and choking the flow of runs in the middle overs.



India fared so well in the group stages that after winning just two matches they had been assured of a semi-final spot, where they beat SriLanka comprehensively. Such was there popularity in the tournament that after the India- Pakistan match in the group stage, a large number of Pakistani fans were rooting for India to win the tournament. So popular were the players, a lot of SriLankan fans sup-ported India in the finals.

A lot has been written about Team India and its players recently. However the skipper MS Dhoni is never given enough credit. His weird field placements, bowling changes and chang-ing the batting order might defy logic some-times, but the man really knows what he is doing. His cricketing genius is clearly illustrat-ed by how he trusted his spinners to bowl the last 2 overs of the final match against England with a conventional field setting when they needed just 18 runs to win (a score very much achievable in modern day cricket) and yet won by five runs. A special mention to Shikhar Dhawan again, this time for his humility and compassion and not his batting, where he dedicated the win to the Uttarakhand flood victims. The dedication by Dhawan was rather heart warming when the nation was celebrating an Indian victory and in course forgetting about the tragedy in North India. It surely must have boosted the morale of the survivors.

With this tournament, India has moved on to the No.1 spot in ODIs in the ICC points table with No.2 England behind by 8 points. This also takes Ravindra Jadeja to a top ten spot in the bowlers and all-rounders category and Shikhar Dhawan debuts in the top 50 list of batsmen with 2 back to back centuries and a fifty.



To sum up, it was a fitting ode to the Champions Trophy -the last onw the cricket-ing world would see.

THE DEPARTED KINGS OF SEVEN TOMBS

We are currently living in the digital age and have forgotten the times when the sun was sufficient to tell us the time. A time when kings and cardinals walked amongst us. Souvenirs of their reign still dwell this city in dilapidated conditions. Reaching out and narrating a story about the departed kings, the magnificent Seven Tombs, surrounded by enchanting minarets stand tall at Ibrahim bagh, a kilometre north of the outer boundary wall of the famous Golconda fort’s Banjara Darwaza(Gypsy door). These architectural marvels were erected in remembrance of the departed kings of Golconda. The Qutub Shahi tombs, planned and built by the Qutub Shahi’s themselves, are the oldest historical monuments in Hyderabad. During the Qutub Shahi period, these tombs are highly revered. However after the fall of Qutub Shahi Dynasty, the tombs were neglected until Sir Salar Jung carried out a restoration under his command. The serene beauty was reinstated when the garden was laid out and the compound wall was rebuilt.




These tombs hold many sarcophagi-all except the last of the Qutub Shahi sultans lie buried here. All tombs have a story to tell - a story embossed on the ornate architecture of its walls. A story intricately carved deep into the stonework of the tombs.

Sultan Quli Qutub Ul MulkThe founder of Qutub Shahi dynasty ruled the sultanate of Golconda in southern India, establishing the Qutub Shahi rule from 1518 – 1687 and died in 1543. Sultan Quli Qutub Ul Mulk’s tomb is resting on an elevated terrace measuring 30m in height. The tomb chamber is an octagon with each side measuring 10 meters. The entire chamber is crowned by a circular dome. Three graves rest in the tomb chamber, while twenty one graves are laid outside on the terrace, each of which lack proper epitaph except the main tomb. Sultan Quli Qutub’s epitaph is inscribed in three bands, in Tauq and Naskh scritps. The inscription refers to him as BADE MALIK(Big Master), an endearing term used across the people of Deccan. What is surprising is the fact that as per the customs, the Sultan had built it during his lifetime – 1543 A.D.

Jamsheed Quli Qutub Shah & Subhan Quli Qutub Shah The second ruler of the Qutub Shahi dynasty, he ruled the Sultanate of Golconda from 1543 to 1550 A.D. He is the only ruler whose tomb is not designed from shining black basalt. Its construction is different from that of the other tombs in the garden. It rises elegantly unlike the squat tombs of other kings. The epitaph of Jamseed Quli Qutub Shah bears no inscriptions, unlike the tombs of other kings. Jamsheed’s son, Subhan Quli Qutub Shah ruled for a short while. His tomb stands at the equinox between his father and grandfather’s tomb. He was popularly referred to as Chote Malik(Little Master).


Sultan Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah The third ruler of Qutub shahi dynasty, he ruled the Sultanate of Golconda from 1550 to 1580 A.D. His tomb is slightly larger than Sultan Quli’s tomb. The southern wall of the tomb displays traces of glazed tiles which once adorned the mausoleum. The tomb bears the resting place for two graves and has sixteen graves laid out on the terrace; most of them are his kin. His sarcophagus bears inscriptions in the Thulth script. His contemporaries, famous calligraphists – Ismail, Isphalan & Taquiuddin Muhammed Salih were responsible for the inscriptions on many of the Qutub shahi edifices. Their inscriptions comprised of texts in Nastaliq, Naskh & Thulth.

Sultan Muhammed Quli Qutub ShahThe fifth Sultan of the Golconda Sultanate under Qutub Shahi dynasty, he was also responsible for the founding of the city of Hyderabad. Muhammed Quli Qutub Shah is also responsible for building the architectural centrepiece – The Charminar. The third son of Ibrahim Quli Qutub shah, his mausoleum is considered the grandest of the seven tombs. Built in 1620 A.D, the tomb rests atop a terrace of 65m square which is 4m high. A flight of stairs takes you to the proper mausoleum which is 22m inside and 11m inside. The tomb has two entrances on southern and eastern sides. The actual tomb is in a vault below the ter-race, decorated by intricately carved Naskh and Persian scirpts.

Sultan Muhammed Qutub ShahThe sixth mausoleum in the seven tombs series is a magnificent work of art decorated with enameled tiles, though only traces of this beautiful art work is evident. The tomb was built in 1626 A.D. The tomb holds six graves with inscriptions in tulth and Naskh script.




Sultan Abdullah Qutub Shah The seventh ruler of the kingdom of Golconda under the Qutub Shahi dynasty, his rule lasted from 1626 A.D to 1672 A.D. It was under his reign that Hyderabad was taken over by Aurangzeb under the command from Shah Jahan. The only success he had was defeating a decayed Vijaynagara. This is the last of the royal tombs since Abdul Hasan Qutub Shah, the last Qutub Shahi Sultan died as a prisoner in the fortress of Daulatabad, near Aurangabad. While the tombs of kings and sultans dominate the seven tombs, interspersed are monuments of the royal family.


Present day : The tombs were once decorated with chandeliers and carpets laid out with velvet canopies on silver poles. The Holy Quran was kept on the pedestal and was read at regular intervals by visitors. Golden spires on top of the tombs of Sultans which enabled distinguishing their tombs from those of other members of the royal family. However, today these tombs have fallen prey to iconoclasm. We’ve ruined these heritage sites with our lovey-dovey inscriptions. Either most sites are just used for ‘lover’s’ shenanigans or are so neglected that we are practically obliter-ating them. We need to identify these once deeply venerated cultural heritage sites and strive to restore their true glory.

HERITAGEHyderabad, the city of Nawabs as it is famously known, is slowly losing its sheen. You might be thinking “Arre Apna Hyderabad Pehle Jaisa Nahi Raha”...you see many people complaining “Pehle Jaisi Baat Nahi Rahi”...this is true..aur rahingi bhi kyu apan apne hyderabad ka khatal apne haatho se kardere..!!

The beautiful monuments which we have inherited from the Quli Qutub Shah and the Nizams, of which we should be proud, are slowly dying a silent death in the hands of our careless attitudes. The Charminar, the Macca Masjid, Seven Tombs, the Golconda Fort, Paigah Tombs and the Musi river are some of the many heritage sites left worse for wear.

Every day we go zooming around these monuments but we pay little atten-tion to them as they shout back at us “Bhai hum log ka haal behaal hai aur kharab mat karo hamareku”. We forget that these tourist attractions bring revenue and business to our lovely city along with praise and awe from onlookers. Yut we still neglect to see what is happening to our lovely monuments. Venkatesh, a regular local visitor to the Charminar, says”I have been in Hyderabad for thirty long years but still I have not seen the Charminar”. .Same is the case with Nayeem , who is also born and raised Hyderabadi...”Arey bhai apan ka roz ana jana hai Golconda ke saamne se lekin apan aaj tak Golconda ka G bhi nai dekhe “ is what you get to hear from him.


Thode log toh itne mahaan rehte, they just forget that it is the “face of hyderabad” and are busy making it more worse by idling there,idhar udhar k baatan karna chai peena..chai piye baad paan khake paan ki pichkari monu-ments pe maarna...end result is the beautiful structure gets a red colored spit mark on it which is not taken care of by any of the authorites. Meanwhile, our Hyderabadis respond with “sab chalta hai bhai..yaa kisku”.

Every morning GHMC workers come and sweep the premises clean and then the deadly mayhem of polluting the surroundings start..ghouse bhai ki mauz ki bandi pe se khalamma ek dazen mauz lete..uske baad khate khate ek chilka charminar k saamne zaam se phek ke jaate jaisa ki woh kachra kundi hai..!! Then comes Rasheed bhai who is in a hurry after having early morning chai and paan. He happily spits it into the Musi river. He furthure decides to pee into it and then leaves. Nobody cares about the stench and filth he has just created.




You will find many street hawkers who surround these places, sell-ing water packets, food, souve-nirs..We happily go and buy things, eat and instead of throwing the garbage in the bin apan idhar dekhte udhar dekhte aur khushi se saamne phek dete.. It adds up to more garbage and filth around the monuments, due to which it becomes a breeding ground for stray dogs, mosquitoes, flies and various other insects. Then we complain “abaah kitte maccharan hogaye yaha pe...abaah yaha koi bhi dekhre nai kitna kachra pada-wa hai..kya galeez boo aari..gov-ernment kuch karri ich nai iska”!! The fact is that all the filth due to our own negligence, not any gov-ernment’s .

The most strange type of people you find are the “Aashiqs”..they go visit these monu-ments, spend some loveydovey time together and start scrib-bling their names on the walls. You find many such names etched on the walls such as “Kabira loves Reshma”...”Swathi my love”..”Shabana and Farooq”..”Ramesh and Shwetha”. Yet we do nothing about it. If any-thing, we make fun of such things “abey dekh kya likhawa hai idhar ahahha” is the generic response.


Another interesting thing is the same people in foreign countries abide by the rules and do not litter on the roads or historical monuments. They strive to keep the surroundings clean. Once they land here, they start throwing gar-bage and then complain “abaah kitta kachra hai yaha..yaa ki hawa kitni polluted hai..yaha ka paani kitna polluted hai..kitte zyaada macchar hai yaha..”koi care hi nahi karta yaha pe”. Expecting a green and clean city with such an attitude and without any work on your part is never going to happen.

As a result we see cracks on the monuments, stenchful surroundings, vandalist elements on the now neglected monuments, which were once of haunting and ethereal beauty. If the status quo remains as it is, very soon hHyder-abad will only be a place of malls, artificial parks and nothing else and we cannot boast about our Nawabi culture anymore to anyone.




1.Apne hyderabad ku apne ghar ki tarah samjho. Dont litter garbage on the roads. Bins are made to throw garbage in them and not just for ‘ deco-ration purpose’.

2.Monuments ku bhi malls, international places ki tarah samjho. Don’t take them for granted and turn a blind eye. Koi kachra phekra toh usko roko aur khud bhi ehityaar karo.

3.Don’t make these places public urinals and ugaaldaans(spitoons). Agar paan khaae toh pichkaari direct monument pe maarne ki koshih mat karo. Instead see a place where there is a provision for spitting.Agar aapke bacche ku toi-let aara toh “jaa beta waa diwar k picche kone mei karle koi nai dekhre” bolke salah mat do. Instead, take the pain and search for a toilet so that the surrounding is clean and free from urine.

4.Apne aashiqui ke kaarname Facebook ke walls pe daalo not on the monument walls..Apne bf/gf ka naam ya apni bewafai ka paigaam fb ke walls pe likho. Please do not damage the walls of beautiful architecture which are already being neglected.

SCHOOLCHALE HUM!School-a golden period in everybody’s life, A phase when the major worries are “getting the school uni-form right” or “completing the homework on time”. Those carefree days can never be brought back even if one is ready to pay a million bucks for them. The couplet by Jagjit Singh rightly fits in it “Yeh daulat bhi lelo..yeh Shohrat bhi lelo bhale cheen lo mujhse meri jawani…Magar mujhko lauta do bachpan ka saawan wo kagaz ki kashti who barish ka paani”.



June is the month which takes our memory back to school.12th June isthe date which is sched-uled for every school to reopen. However, there are is a lot of preparation going on before it reopens. We see every child get-ting ready for school..koi apne books ku cover chadata toh koi apne uniforms ready karta...going back to school after a two month break is an exciting feel-ing in itself.

The thrill of taking new things to school, attend new classes, with new seating arrangements and new teachers is a blessing in itself. Many children don’t sleep the night before with excitment. The preparation to go to a new classroom is challenge for most-parents.

School re-open hone wala hai aur pappu ki ammi abhi pappu ke liye dress lena hai..sonali ke abbu ku yaad aaya ki sonali ke liye “ barbie ka uubag” lena hai


1.School ki fees

Pehle school ki fees pay karke, school stall se jaake text books aur note books lena hai...failing to which pappu aur sonali ka first day utna exciting nahi rahinga

2.Getting books for the new curriculum

Fees toh pay kardie ..ab books dilana hai..agar kisi ke bade bhai ya behen same class last year padhe toh ammi purane text books lejaao bolte..lekin pappu aur munni ku yeh manzoor nai rehta..”ammi mai bhaiyya ke books nai leke jaatu school ku...mere ku naye text books hona” is the reaction of most of the kids going to school.

3.Labels aur covers

During our times we didn’t have much choice over labels and covers; the same old dis-ney “alladin” labels or the “wwf” labels were the famous ones. Covers were just plain brown with plastic cover which had to be stapled to make a perfect fit to the books. Aajkal ke munni aur pappu’s ke paas “doreamon”se leke “pokemon”,” harry potter” se leke “iron man” tak har type k labels milte ..today covering the book is so easy that school stationeries are offering it for 3 rs per book and no one is com-plaining.

Ab books leliye, cover chadliye..tiffin aur water bottle toh lena hai..ammi meku woh cello ka teen boxes wala tiffin hona bold-erau mai abbich aur iron man ka water bottle leke jaatu is what pappu demands nowadays from his mother..agar ammi aisa kuch nai kare toh samjho pappu miya poora saal dum karte ammi ku ki ammi unki khwahish poori nai kare!!!

5.Stationary

“Hazaron khwahishein aisi k har khawhish pe dum nikle...”is the motto of every school going kid. Ammi meku faber castle ka pen hona...avengers ka pencil box hona...iron man k stickers hona..Batman ka pen pencil hona..is what pappus want..aakhir pappu miya pass karke amma bawa pe ehsaan kare..!!

6.Shoes and Uniform

Back in the 90’s, uniforms had to be tailor made..we had to take a cloth piece and go to our nearest tailor and give him measure-ments so that he could stitch them up. F.D.Khan was a hot favourite among the parents, for shoes Bata, Metro, Hollywood at Abids did the trick.Now we get stitched uniforms..Sona garments pe jaao school ka naam bolo aur readymade dress lelo; but for those of you who have elder siblings going to same school, bhaiyya aur baaji ke school uniform chalana padta.


School memories brings tears in our eyes along with smiles on our faces. Those wonderful mornings starting with the assembly...those first periods of the school..those annoying first benchers reminding teachers of “teacher teacher home work”...those funny last benchers who are happy with their punishments “kneel down” or “stand up on the last bench”...those terrifying rounds made by the principal...woh games period jaha par kabhi drill hota toh kabhi march past hota...lunch break ko kaun bhool sakte jaha par sab ke tiffins kha ke khelne nikal jaate thae..after school woh auto wale ka intezaar..woh bear, jaam aur gan-gul ki bandi..woh ice cream ki bandi...woh kairi ki bandi...reminds me of the lines “give me some sunshine..give me some rain...give me another chance I wanna grow up once again!!!!

I leave you all with this beautiful thought of our wonderful schools; a salute to our teachers for making us what we are today, and love to all those friends without whom our journey would have never been complete!!!

Yet, whenever a Salman Khan movie is out, we hyderabadi’s buy two things: advance tickets and gym membership. We might just croon to his songs during the workout and even pair “Dagabaaz re” with a set of preacher curls. Still, every time we walk into a gym our minds are never vacant of Bhai’s guns. Back at home guys would sport avia-tors, flex muscles a la Chulbul istyle and say “ammi muscle se yaad aaya, talawa gosht bangaya?”. We even dream about big bang movie climaxes where our shirt tears off while flex-ing muscles in anger. The bottom-line is if you attempt his workout of 1000 squats and 1000 pushups the only thing you’ll be saying is, “Yeh jism pyaar karna nahi jaanta, jaanta hai tho sirf bodybuilding”.

But we stick to our belief - Bhai ki izzat poorey Hyderabad ki izzat hai, that’s why Hyderabadi’s say sabku maro, Salman Khan ku nakko maro.

Sabku katrina hona, am I right? Girls I know you’re probably irked right now but this is about Salman Khan and how we want to be him, this isn’t about you. Ever since Katrina walked into his life, our lives changed. We die hard Sallu bhai fans set out to find a Katrina look alike. After all when you want to be the best you want the best for yourself. Whatsoever their relationship status we know holds the nume-ro uno position in bollywood behind which is Sallu bhai’s bada haath. Irrespective, we do adore the beautiful Jodi and feel to need to have a Katrina for ourselves as well.

For those of you folks out there who are looking to pursue MS/MBA in the US, NOW is the right time to begin your process. It is easy to get confused with all the various intricacies and complications in this phase but with proper advice and guidance you should be just fine. Although there are various consultancies out there, all they end up doing is mint money and state/accomplish what you already know/can do. So, If you would like to save some moolah, here are some tips that will guide you throughout your process.

1. Prepare For Your Testing

First things first, begin preparation for your GRE/GMAT nice and early. Choose the right materials and the right institute, if needed. Allow yourself a prepa-ration time of at least two months before the test. Book the dates, well in advance, to avoid last minute issues. You’d want to have your score in hand before you decide your universities.

As for TOEFL v/s IELTS, both are accepted by majority of the universities although TOEFL is preferable in the US. If you do not want to limit yourself just to the US, then you should consider writing IELTS.

2. Selecting the right university and SOP

After having your scores in hand, you can then proceed to select-ing the universities to apply for. Although the US News Rankings provides a good idea, do not limit yourself only to it. Other factors such as location, vlimate and accommodation must also be accounted for before proceed-ing with your selection(s). Your scores and your GPA play a vital role in getting you an admit but there is no guarantee that you CAN or CANNOT get into a par-ticular college with just these.

The SOP is the single most impor-tant part of your application. Any shortcomings in your scores can be overlooked if you have a good SOP. A good SOP should be brief and concise, around 600-1000 words, and must outline all your achievements, ambitions and research interests. Do not write a one-size-fits-all-universities SOP, tailor it to the different demands of different universi-ties. Give yourself adequate time to prepare your SOP and get it proofread by several people.


3. Applying Deadlines: Most of the top universities application deadline for fall is usually by mid-December or mid-Jan. Most mid-level universities deadlines are on/by the end of February while some extend as far as April or May. See the deadlines before applying to a university.

All the universities now have an online application system. So, register on the university website and start with your online application form. Arrange your Letters of Recommendations (LOR’s) from professors that know you well and who respond quickly to the university’s

follow-up. Send your GRE/GMAT, TOEFL/IELTS scores and arrange the financial support documents and other documents the university asks.

After the online application is done with, pay for the application fee. The official transcripts need to be mailed (by post) to the university along with the hard copies of all the required documents. Once all the documents are received by the university, your application will be rendered complete. When complete, it goes under review and a final decision is taken usually


4. I-20 and scheduling of visaOnce you get an admit to a univer-sity, mithai baadmei baato pehle I-20 ki fees pay karke I-20 lelo. Schedule a visa appointment online and book the available slots according to your con-venience. Be very careful, especially with the name, while filling the DS-240 form.

5. Visa InterviewUnlike a Hyderabadi wedding, be in time for your visa interview. Confidence and self-belief is the key while dodging the interviewer’s questions especially the ones on your shortcomings, if any. This, coupled with a bit of luck should

get you the Visa! Ab baato mithai!

6. Book your tickets and Contact your seniorsBook your tickets as soon as you get your passport. The fares and the pas-sengers tend to rise during this period and it would be wise to book your tick-et at the earliest.

Nearly every university has a com-munity for Indian students. So, find a group on Facebook or Google groups and contact them. Get temporary or a permanent accommodation arranged before you get there.All The Best!
