Material Handling Shipbuilders Celebrate One Year “Accident-Free”On June 6, shipbuilders in Newport News Shipbuilding’s main distribution center celebrated one year “accident-free.” To celebrate the accomplishment, supervisors in the warehouse held a luncheon for the shipbuilders. Congratulations to the shipbuilders on the following teams: “Red Team” (Teresa Mullen, O53 Material Handling supervisor), the “Blue Team” (Ray Shazier, O53 Material Handling supervisor), the “Pink Team” (Eden Hill-Jones, O53 Material Handling supervisor), and the “Green Team” (John Spady, O53 Material Handling supervisor). Keep up the great work!

Shipbuilders Steering the WayE46 Survivability Designers Christopher Rolf and Brett Carson are recent winners of an Opportunity for Improvement (OFI) award. Rolf and Carson’s idea consisted of creating a “ship in place” delivery method to eliminate storage cost and to create a safer work environment for shipbuilders working on Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78).

“Due to unique design and scheduling constraints, a very small portion of our system gets installed much earlier than the rest of the components,” said Carson. “This requires a vast majority of components to be stored for up to three and a half years before being installed.” Rolf added, “While researching this idea, Brett and I had the opportunity to meet with many great Huntington Ingalls Industries shipbuilders. We are so grateful for everyone’s support.”

Rolf and Carson’s OFI will be incorporated into the John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) build plan. The new “ship in place” delivery method will save the company approximately $173,000 over the course of a 12-month period.

NNS Hosts Admiral RichardsonNewport News Shipbuilding (NNS) hosted Admiral John Richardson, director of Naval Reactors, for a tour of the shipyard on Tuesday, July 2. During the visit, Richardson received a briefing on the shipyard’s current work and capabilities and was given a tour of carriers Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and USS Enterprise (CVN 65). The admiral also delivered brief remarks telling shipbuilders at the Covered Modular Assembly Facility (CMAF) that he wished every American could see and understand “what a national treasure we have here in Newport News Shipbuilding.”

How Does Your Job Affect the “Build Clean” Process?Although pipe work does not affect every organization across the company, all Newport News Shipbuilding employees have responsibility for the “Build Clean” program.

The work you do affects others’ ability to “Build Clean” and maintain system cleanliness throughout construction. Know how your work affects the “Build Clean” process across the value stream. For example, all working documents should be formulated with system cleanliness in mind.

“Today’s celebration was a great demonstration of respect for current and past veterans. I am honored to have served and to continue to serve through Newport News Shipbuilding.”

Terri Goodman-Henry (E44) Army

“The Armed Forces celebration was a great way to show appreciation for veterans who work at the shipyard. It’s nice to know we are appreciated.”

Ralf Smith (E44) Navy

“The entire event was great! It was nice to see the large crowd of veterans working for the company come out and celebrate together.”

Trent Richardson (E45) Navy

“The celebration was very nice. After serving on a carrier in the Navy, it’s great to work for a company that builds them.”

Christopher Robinson (E56) Navy

REMINDERS

Huntington Ingalls Industries is pleased to announce Enterprise Rent-A-Car and National Car Rental as our primary suppliers effective July 15, 2013 for all new rentals. Visit the Travel website on Homeport for more information. Employees are encouraged to start enrolling in the Emerald Club immediately to receive their membership number. All employees who sign up by July 31 will be given Emerald Executive status, which allows them to rent a car at the midsize rate but choose the car of their choice from the Emerald Aisle.

Sign up to attend an overview and question and answer session with an Enterprise/National representative on July 11 from 9-10 a.m. in the VASCIC auditorium. Reserve your seat today!

Car Rental Supplier Changes

Beginning July 15, employees will no longer have a separate password in Time and Attendance (TAS); they will log on using their Newport News Shipbuilding Network password (3+2). A Computer User Access System (CUAS) request will still be required to request access to TAS; however, TAS users will no longer receive Green Sheets for TAS access credentials. Shipbuilders who have questions or concerns, should contact the Service Desk at 8-HELP.

Say “Goodbye” to TAS Green Sheets

Correction: “Cardboard” Reference in NNS’ Recycling New ProgramIn the Currents article regarding Newport News Shipbuilding’s (NNS) new “Single Stream Recycling Program” on July 1, there was a statement that read: “With the implementation of the ‘Single Stream Recycling Program,’ employees no longer need to separate plastic bottles, aluminum cans, newspapers, cardboard, etc. Employees will now be able to put all those materials in their trash cans, which will be taken to the green dumpsters and recycled together.”

The cardboard referred to in the article should have been “non-corrugated cardboard” that can go into regular trash.

Nothing has changed in NNS’ current recycling program for corrugated cardboard. The corrugated cardboard should still go to Material Stop 550 where Department O46 personnel manage that recycling process.

VCS Program Hosts “Patriotic Week”Continued from p. 1 “... to join in the moment.”

Maffett and White said that the new flag will remind them of the sailors who will one day sail in the submarines they help build. “You can never have too many American flags,” said Maffett.

As a reminder, all shipbuilders who have served or currently serve in the military, reserves and national guard should register with Human Resources to confirm their veteran status.
