ODU and PSU Students Visit NNSEight Old Dominion University engineering students and one student from The Pennsylvania State University visited Newport News Shipbuilding March 10-14. The purpose of the visit was to provide the students information about shipyard operations and potential career opportunities at NNS.

During the weeklong visit, the students toured the waterfront, ROVR, Modeling and Simulation lab, Foundry, NNS’ Welding School and the 310-metric-ton green crane. The students also attended networking events and were provided hands-on experience in various technology activities.NNS Metallurgist Stephen Williams gives the college students a tour of the Foundry on March 11. Ford Crew Celebrates Safety RecordOn March 11, X42 shipbuilders working on Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) were recognized for their 746 accident-free safety record. The crew is responsible for various build, test and operations aboard the carrier.

“This crew has a great safety and quality record,” said Foreman Earl Sullivan. “They have outstanding attitudes, they know what is expected of them and they ask questions when they don’t understand something – each of them are leaders.”

Shipbuilder Nathaniel Morse (X42) believes the crew’s relationships have played a large part in the crew’s overall safety record. “We look out for each other,” he said. “The younger guys in the crew look to the older guys for advice and safety tips. When we have questions, the older guys never hesitate to come over and help.”

The Huntington Ingalls Industries Careers website has a new web address: www.buildyourcareer.com. The new, easier to remember website address was established to support the recruitment branding campaign, “Build Your Career,” that’s been in place for more than

two years. In 2013, the HII Careers website was visited more than one million times with more than 245,000 applications being received for our career openings.

praised the crew for their efforts. “Safety and quality overlap a lot,” he said. “If you are working safe and performing quality work, the other two pillars [cost and schedule] will fall into place. All of you have someone outside of work that loves and cares for you – and they are counting on you to work safe.”

Sullivan added, “We want you all to keep up the great work you are doing and always remember that safety trumps all.”

Nominate a Shipbuilder for an Ethics AwardTwo USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) shipbuilders were recognized for their ethical actions in February.

William Parker and Tyre Watkins were leaving work one afternoon in February when they noticed a fellow shipbuilder [Kelly Reese] in the parking lot having car issues. Not knowing the shipbuilder, they walked over to see if they could help out. After taking a look at the car, they determined that the battery had died. Luckily, Reese had an extra battery in her car and Parker had the tools needed to replace the battery in his vehicle. Parker and Watkins replaced the battery and Reese was able to drive home.

“I’m so thankful for these two shipbuilders,” said Reese. “They could have seen me and kept walking, but they cared enough to stop and come over to make sure I was okay.”

Chris Miner, vice president of In-Service Carriers, thanked the shipbuilders for their ethical actions. “I know this isn’t the first time you’ve helped out – it’s who you are,” he said. “Your actions define the ‘best friend at work’ and ‘someone cares about me’ employee engagement questions. It’s how we care about each other inside and outside of work. The shipyard is fortunate to have you working as part of our team.”

Employees are encouraged to nominate and recognize fellow shipbuilders who demonstrate company values. For more information, visit the Ethics and Business Conduct Yardnet website. Contact Catrina Hagwood (K18) at 688-1907 for questions.

USS Texas Celebrates 100 Year Anniversary Newport News-built battleship USS Texas (BB-35) celebrated its 100th year anniversary on March 12, 2014. The Battleship Texas Foundation and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department held two events to celebrate the anniversary. A final crew reunion was held aboard the ship last Wednesday, March 12. During the event, 32 former sailors who served aboard Texas during World War II were awarded “Patriot Medals” in honor of the special occasion. The second event was a centennial celebration held on Saturday, March 15 to honor Texas’ legendary history and to pay tribute to the surviving crew members.

Texas is the ninth NNS-built battleship that served two World Wars and is now a museum ship moored near Houston, TX.
