● Say: Welcome to Kids’ Club, we’re so glad you’re here! We want this to be a safe and fun place for you. To do that, let’s all commit to doing a few things:

○ Show respect to each other○ Listen when someone else is speaking○ Have fun!

● Say: This month we’re doing a new special summer series, and it’s all about EMOTIONS! Who can tell me what emotions are? Yep, emotion is when we feel something in response to something happening around us. And most importantly–God GIVES us emotions! All of them! Emotions like joy, sadness, anger, and fear. Let check out a fun video and see some different emotions from the movie, Inside Out! In this movie, we see emotions shown as people inside a girl’s head!

● Video: Inside Out / Meet the Emotions● Say: Emotions all come from God, and they help us deal with what happens

to us...but only when we use them in the right way. That means that when we let our feelings get out of control, then WE get out of control. If we don’t talk about our feelings, and get them out in the open, it can even hurt us. So...how DO we deal with our feelings? Well, in the Bible, there are all kinds of stories that show how people, including Jesus, dealt with their emotions by having a close relationship with God, and relying him to help.

● Say: So to start us off, we’re talking about joy! Today’s big idea is this:● Slide: Joy comes from God● Say: Happiness is when we feel good in the moment, like when something

funny happens and we can’t help but laugh. But JOY is lasting, no matter what we’re going through! And best of all, we get true joy from following God and spending time with him.

● Say: Let’s look at a fun story from the Bible about a guy named David. He was the king of Israel, God’s family. He had incredibly joy, not just because good things happened to him. In fact, a lot of really hard things happened in his life. But, because he spent time with God, he had true, lasting joy.

● Video: Bible Theatre / David Dances● Ask: So what gave David joy? Yep, just by being in God’s presence! And

how did he SHOW it? Yes, by dancing in the streets, even when other people thought he looked crazy! And he didn’t just do it for fun, he did it to praise and celebrate God!

● Say: WE can experience that joy too when we spend time with God and get energy from him! And most importantly, it LASTS, even when we’re going through something hard or painful.

● Lay out a large piece of paper and markers. Lead kids in drawing each of the following emotions as a “face” on the paper. As they draw each each emotion, discuss what that emotion means, and if they’ve ever felt it before.

○ Joy (this is when we have lasting happiness from knowing God and spending time with him)

○ Sadness ○ Anger (being mad)○ Fear (being scared)

● If you have especially young kids who struggle to draw different emotions, have them act out the expressions instead.

Let kids look around the room for one toy they really enjoy–have them bring the toy back to your group (alternatively, gather toys beforehand yourself).

● Ask kids to tell you why they chose/like that toy, and if/why it would bring them joy to play with it!● Then ask: What if the toy broke? Would the “happiness” last? How would you feel if these things

were gone? (Nope, the feeling would not last!)● Things like toys might make us happy, but real joy comes from God! When we know him, love him

and spend time with him, he gives us joy that lasts no matter what!

● Say: Let’s review today’s big idea:● Slide: Joy comes from God.● Say: We’ve talked all about what it means to have joy, and how we can get it

from God. Now let’s watch a video of some kids explaining what joy and happiness means to them!

● Video: Small Talk / Happiness● Say: It’s so great that God gives us joy, and then we can celebrate and praise

and have fun just by spending time with him and being in his presence, like David did! But, does that mean that we’ll always FEEL happy, every moment of the day? Nope. Will we still go through tough things that bring up other emotions, like sadness and anger? Yes.

● Say: This month we’re learning a new verse! Let’s check it out.● Slide: Ecclesiastes 3:4 There is a time to cry. And there’s a time to

laugh. There is a time to be sad. And there’s a time to dance!● Say: ALL our emotions and feelings come from God, and it’s okay to feel

every single one of them! But God wants us to learn how to rely on him to help us deal with those emotions in the right way.

● Say: Here’s a few steps to help us deal with our feelings and trust God. So, whenever we’re experiencing a strong emotion, we can:

○ STOP and name what we’re feeling○ LOOK at what’s really going on around us○ LISTEN to what God says

● Say: We’ll talk more about that in small groups. Now let’s express our joy just like David, by worshipping God with music! (You choose whether to direct kids to dance and sing along, or have them stay and seated and watch the words, to help them process the song!)

● Music Video: Who You Are● Say: Now here’s a video that just for fun, to help us show our joy and

celebrate God through dancing and singing! ● Music Video: Can’t Stop the Feeling (optional)

Prepare and share an example: Tell kids a personal story of a time your relationship with God gave you joy, even though you were struggling with something difficult. It could be a simple example of how you were content or had gratitude toward God during a hard time, and he helped you through it.

Joy comes from God.

There is a time to cry. And there’s a time to laugh. There is a time to be sad. And there’s

a time to dance.Ecclesiastes 3:4

Here’s a few steps to help us deal with our feelings and trust God. So whenever we’re experiencing a strong emotion, we can.

● STOP and name what we’re feeling ● LOOK at what’s really going on around us● LISTEN to what God says

Give each kid one Bingo sheet and 20 Bingo chips. Set out a deck of Bingo cards.● Let kids take turns pulling a Bingo card from the deck. Then show the Bingo card to the group

and lead them through the activity on the back of the card. Some Bingo Cards are the same, so it is OK for multiple kids in your group to win Bingo at the same time.

● Once everyone has gotten Bingo, put the Bingo cards back in the bin for the next service and collect the counters. Then SAY:

○ You did a great job STOPPING and naming what you were feeling, LOOKING at what was really going on in each situation, and LISTENING to what God tells us. We all have lots of feelings, and they all come from God! We just need to let God help us deal with them the right way.
