Dear Parents & Carers,

Classes have been busy this week getting back into routine, with eager and settled children. It was a

pleasure to spend time in all the classrooms during the week and engage in learning experiences

with the children. This is something that I really enjoy doing and try to as much as possible, although

things don’t always go to plan.

Peer Support Training

On Tuesday and Wednesday of last week Mrs Fraser and Mrs Quinn took students through a variety

of modules in preparation for being peer support leaders. I was very impressed with the way the

children were responding to the sessions and look forward to watching them grow and develop in

their role as peer support leaders mentoring the younger students of our school. Thank you to Mrs

the topic. The team consisting of Emma Sheehan, Brydie Zorz, Ebony Seymour and Carmen

Schindler have also been working particularly hard developing their own understanding of the topic.

They should be commended for the hard work they have put in and their commitment. It was great

to have a delightful group of students and family members and a teacher from Cooerwull. Cooerwull

to adjudicate for us. Mrs O’Rourke gave all the girls positive feedback and suggested strategies to

think about to further develop their skills. Thank you to the Wallerawang parents for offering the

girls encouragement and support. Wallerawang’s final debate in this series will be against Oberon.

Thank you to Mrs Quinn for the work she has done and is doing with the team and to Matilda Cafe

for chairing and Kayla Giles for time keeping.

Touch Football On Friday Wallerawang will host Lithgow Primary in the first round of PSSA touch football. This is always a very competitive game and I am sure this one will be no different. Under the guidance and expertise of Joe and Sloan Beecroft the team con-sisting of Holly Beecroft, Kayla Giles, Erin Luchetti, Erin Rainsford, Tahnee Lamborn, Alexis Cathie, Matilda Cafe, Shaqkyra Quinn, Hannah Whyte and Emma Sheehan have been training hard. They are thanked for their continued contribution and sup-port. Weather permitting it will be great to use our own school oval for this hotly contested game and to have other students in attendance to watch their peers. Parents and community members are invit-ed to watch and cheer. It will also be great to be able to wear our expanding representative sports uniforms thanks to your generosity.

Public Speaking Trophies Public Speaking trophies will be handed out on Fri-day to the students who placed 1st, 2nd & 3rd in the finals of our public speaking competition. We have been getting all our trophies locally through Mur-ray Besley. Murray has been fantastic and has an excellent range on offer, he always does a great deal and we thank him for his support. I urge local schools & associations to support Murray if in need of trophies. His email address is: [email protected]

Education Week Next week is Education Week where we celebrate public education in our schools. The theme contin-ues to be ‘creating the future’. A combined WGEC opening will be held at Lithgow Primary School next Tuesday with school leaders and community representatives in attendance. Miss Gurney has been busy preparing students Madison Burns, Maddison Hollands, Erin Luchetti, Erin Rainsford, Brydie Zorz, Amy Cook, Matilda Cafe and Carmen Schindler as part of the combined WGEC choir and she is thanked for her contribution to this. I attend-ed the rehearsal last week and they sound fantas-tic. The group will then move around a variety of Lithgow destinations showcasing their skills. I would to thank Shellie Tancred, Principal from Capertee PS for the time and effort she has put into the coordination.

Education Open Day On Wednesday commencing at 9.30 am we will host our school celebrations where we will acknowledge all students across the school for the contribution they make each day. Stages will pre-sent an item and students and parents will be

awarded for both application to study and citizen-ship, with parents also being acknowledged for the many and varied levels of support they offer. After the assembly parents are invited back to the class-rooms for a sharing session with students, with the P&C and school staff providing a morning tea to conclude the morning’s program. We look forward to your attendance in the celebration of all the great things that happen consistently at Walle-rawang.

Kindergarten 2014 Parents of students enrolling or considering enrol-ling are invited to collect an information and enrol-ment package from the front office. School tours are available and I am happy to meet with prospec-tive enrolments at any time to talk through what we have to offer at Wallerawang. On Thursday 22nd August a parent information ses-sion will be held, followed up on Thursday 29th Au-gust with a Kindergarten orientation morning. Fur-ther information will be sent prior to these events.

Trivia Night On Saturday Wallerawang PS held its 3rd trivia night in what has become an annual event. Once again I continue to be humbled by the incredible amount of support and generosity in our communi-ty. I would like to thank everyone who supported this fundraising event. Approximately $4,500 was raised which will go straight back into classrooms with the purchase of literacy resources. The P&C are thanked for their on-going support to the school as without their input and commitment we would not be able to provide the students with the resources and opportunities that we now can.

I would like to particularly thank Anna Fitzgerald, Katena Taylor and Leanne Houlison for their lead in this event and Duncan & Rebecca Auld, along with Rebecca’s daughter Brooke for organising the questions, marking and collating. The community of Wallerawang is extremely unique and there are always so many examples in both times of need and celebration where people come together. It is great to see the way everyone socialises, feels a part of and is included in events.

I leave you this week with a quote I am sure we all can relate to. Experience is not what happens to you. It is what you do with what happens to you. - Aldous Huxley

PSSA Basketball Gala Day 2013

It has come that time of year that Ms Graham and I are looking for support for the PSSA Basketball Gala Day 2013 for both Boys and Girls which will be held at the Wallerawang Indoor Stadium on Thursday the 8th of August. If you could assist us by volunteering as a support coach, scorer or time keeper that would be wonderful. If you have experience as a referee that would also be greatly appreciated? Please direct in-terest to either myself, Ms Graham or the office.

Thank you in anticipation , Mr Campling Gala Day Coordinator

Peer Support News

We are commencing our Peer Support lessons this week. The whole school participates in Peer Support for 30 minutes each week. Two Peer leaders facilitate a small group of 8-10 younger students, who work together through a number of structured activities. Each teacher will supervise 2-3 groups in their class-room. We are working on a module called Keeping Friends helping us explore the concept of friendship, build relationships and develop skills in empathy and critical thinking. The module runs for 8 sessions. Our first session enables the children to get to know eve-ryone in their group, agreeing on how they will work together and interact cooperatively with others. They will also begin to think about the meaning of friend-ship. We encourage you to talk to your children about Peer Support every week as it will help to rein-force the concepts learned in each session.

Live Life Well

Keep active in the colder months. Don’t be a winter wannabe and let you and your

children be sedentary this winter. Encourage chil-dren to engage in active play such as bush walk-

ing, bike riding, kicking the footy, or playing a game of tag all year round.

Year 6 Fundraising Committee

We are conducting a Billy G’s Gourmet Cookie Dough Fundraiser as a major fundraiser for this term so we are asking for your support, which will be much appreciated. Funds raised will go towards a fantastic end of year present from Year 6 to Wallerawang Public School. Students have received a Billy‘s Gourmet Cookie Dough order form. An individual prize program has been in-cluded for every student/family that sells one or more tubs. The more tubs you sell the better the prize! There is a selection of over 55 prizes to choose from such as Barbie, Nerf, Hot Wheels, Razor and much, much, more. Please take the order form to your family, friends and work colleagues and even take the order form to your child’s sporting activities. Students who sell one or more tubs will be entitled to a prize of their choice and will also receive family discount vouchers for Baskin Rob-bins, Stefan salon, AMF Bowling & Pixie Photos valued at $140. WIN AN IPAD – each student has the chance to win an iPad. At the end of each term a winner will be selected. If one of our students wins the prize our school will also win two (2) ipads. So don’t forget to enter. For more details on this promotion and how to enter, please view the inside of the order form. Please return the order form along with your monies on or before Friday the 9th of August. Delivery will be on Thursday 5th September. Please ensure that you make arrangements to collect your cookie dough order on the day of delivery if your order is more then two tubs as the product will be too heavy for your child to carry home, after school hours will be provided for pick up.

1/2G Library Time

Every Tuesday we love going to the library. Our time starts with us returning our books that we might have borrowed last week. We then get to choose one or two new books to borrow. After

we have borrowed we get to put a sticker on our borrowing chart. We love story time with Mrs Nancarrow and finally we have lots of time in

the computer lab to do some publishing

Canteen Roster

Student Medical Forms

During terms 3 and 4 we will be updating our medi-cal records systems to ensure we have the most up-to-date information on your child’s health. If you have a child with a medical condition you will re-ceive a copy of the new forms in the mail and will need to fill them out and return them to us as soon as you can.

The good news is we have already started collect-ing some of this information, which means less for you to do. The new forms will help us collect your child’s important medical information and the in-troduction of new systems will mean we’ll be able to better manage the daily and emergency health needs of your child.

We appreciate your support as we start collecting the information. If you have any questions please call the office on 63551210.
