I am truly thankful for the prayerful support the Trinity community has given me throughout my time at Bethel, and I am overjoyed to be joining the pastors and staff at Trinity as a pastoral intern this summer. It is truly an honor to have the opportunity to meet with members of our church on pastoral visits, share a sermon with you and work alongside the staff and volunteers of Trinity to be God’s hands and feet. Kassy Heinrich takes on a new role as Trinity’s pastoral intern

Kassy is a familiar face to many at Trinity, but this summer, she’s taken on an exciting new role. In June, Kassy started her position as pastoral intern and will

continue to help with pastoral duties throughout the summer.

Dear Trinity,

I imagine many of you can relate to the sentiment that time goes by much too quickly. I find it hard to believe that my family and I first joined Trinity more than 12 years ago. I find it equally hard to believe that after four years, I am nearing completion of my time in seminary. I first sensed the call to pastoral ministry when I was part of Trinity’s high school youth program, and I have both fought and followed that still small voice in the past 10 years through business school, law school and now through seminary. To say these years have been a journey is nothing short of an understatement. As I have learned more of who God is, and explore who it is He has made and called me to be, I continue to be both humbled and empowered in ways I never imagined.

Since I began pursuing my degree at Bethel Seminary, I have envisioned a bi-vocational call, both continuing my law practice and pursuing ministry. This summer I finally have the opportunity to step into that vision.

This summer is intended to be a season of growth, transformation and refinement for me as I complete my Master of Divinity and prepare myself to step into pastoral ministry as a profession. Your prayers, feedback and insights are welcome!

Thank you also for donating over $280 to buy honeybees for Heifer International in honor of our VBS Bible Buddy, Abbee. HS youth delivered the donations on their trip to Heifer Ranch.

We had over 200 kids and 100 volunteers sharing God’s love the week of June 12-15. It was incredible to hear kids shout, “WOW, GOD!” while learning God made them for a purpose and He’ll always be with them. The week wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of our volunteers! Thank you

to MS and HS youth who helped as crew leaders and to parents, grand-parents and other adult leaders who helped with crafts, drama, decorations, music and more!

High School Mission Trip to Heifer Ranch and Leadership Trip to Montana

High school youth spent a week (June 23-30) in Perryville, Arkansas at Heifer Ranch, where they worked on projects to promote sustainable solutions to world hunger, poverty and environmental degradation. Read about the trip on the mission trip blog at https://tlctravelblog.wordpress.com. More details and pictures will be in the August Tower.

The High School Leadership Team is also going to Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp in Montana the week of July 8-15. Please keep them in your prayers. A recap and pictures will be in the August Tower.

Middle School Trips to the Boundary Waters and Camp Hiawatha

21 of Trinity’s 7th and 8th graders trekked through the Boundary Waters on canoe trips the week of June 24-30. This is the largest group of youth that Trinity has taken on canoe trips!

A group of 35 of our middle school youth is also headed to Camp Hiawatha in Deer Lake, MN the week of July 16-21.

Pray for all of our youth experiencing God in Minnesota’s Great Northwoods this summer! Pictures from both trips will be included in the August Tower.

Financial Update through May

Although giving dropped slightly, to (0.8%) under budget through May, we’ve entered the summer months in a good position. We thank you for your faithful support of Trinity’s ministries and invite you to continue your generosity throughout the summer. An easy way to do this is to sign up for electronic giving. You can pick up an ‘I Give Electronically’ laminated card at the usher stand and place it in the plate during the offering to show your participation. For members who would like to join others in making contributions with a direct electronic transfer from a bank account, please contact the church office for a form, or access the link from the giving page on the Trinity website at https://trinitylonglake.nm-secure.com/online-giving. The process is easy to setup!

Trinity also accepts stock gifts, and if you’re 70½ or older, an IRA Charitable Rollover may be right for you. Contact Rindee Erdmann, Financial Manager, by email at [email protected] or by phone at 952-476-0112 x136 for more information on Simply Giving, stock gifts or IRA rollovers.

Nursery help needed for the summer! Can you help in the nursery on Sunday mornings, 8:45-10 a.m.? Please contact Stacy Thoma.

Handmade cards are available in the narthex for a $2 donation each. Proceeds will support the mission outreach work of the Dorcas Circle.

Lutheran Night at Target Field

Tuesday, August 8 7:00 p.m.

Come cheer on the Twins when they play the Milwaukee Brewers for Lutheran Night. There’s no better way to spend a summer night than at the ballpark!

Tickets are $36, and the seats are in the lower level Field Box. Bus transportation will be available from Trinity.

Sign up online or at the Sign Up Center. See Jeri with questions.

Deadline to sign up is July 12.

What’s up with the screen during worship? The current projectors were installed during the remodel in 2008. With a life expectancy of 5-7 years, a replacement is long overdue. Following the recent bulb replacement, we’ve been experiencing some issues with the shutter. This problem has gotten better with use, and we hope it will fix itself in time. Thank you for your patience.

The bigger question is: What’s next? With the abundance of ambient light in the sanctuary, the quality of projected images can get very washed out on Sunday mornings. The latest developments in LED displays, like those in the recently installed outdoor sign, would be the perfect answer to the problem. But that would require a new video processing system and displays – a total cost around $60,000-$80,000. The other option is to replace the current projectors with no significant improvement in picture quality at a cost of $10,000-$12,000.

The current plan is to run the projectors until they stop working, in hopes that future LED prices will make the leap a more viable option for us. In the meantime, please be patient and understanding, as there is no way to predict if/when the projectors will shutdown. Thank you.

vs.

Middle School Summer Stretch is August 8. Youth will volunteer at Second Harvest Heartland, then explore the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, and end at Target Field for the Twins game. Cost is $40, which includes Twins ticket, bus transportation and a T-shirt.

Volunteer Opportunities

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace.

Look what we are collecting — Can you help?

Items to repurpose for the AGAPE Market: Pillow forms & gently used sweatshirts/school spirit wear.

Ongoing Donations: Used cell phones/batteries; travel-size shampoo, soap, cream rinse; grocery/coupon books (expired no more than 30 days); paper bags; diapers (any size and quantity); socks (both men’s & women’s); reusable bags; women’s bras (any size, new) and feminine hygiene products.

Place donations in the bins by the Sign Up Center.

Did you know? One of the most common needs that brings families to Interfaith Outreach is the need for groceries. 40% of the people who use the food shelf are children. The demand for food is highest during the summer, when children are home and not receiving free or reduced lunches at school. At the same time, food donations are at their lowest because of vacations, faith communities experiencing lower attendance, and civic groups taking a break.

Here’s a simple way to help: Make a donation of $35 to support the food shelf. Indicate “IOCP Summer Groceries” on the envelope or memo line of check. Each $35 is equivalent to $245 purchasing power at the local food bank. Thank you for supporting kids in our community this summer!

Serving Near… Serving Our Community

Two opportunities to be part of our local community and help it grow this summer:

• Monthly Community Meal: Co-sponsored by Calvin Presbyterian, St. George Catholic and Trinity with a goal of fellowship and relationship-building. Come and share a meal together once a month! Volunteers are also needed to help prep and serve each meal. Trinity is coordinating the July 27 dinner at Dexter Park, 5:30-6:30 p.m. We hope you will attend and consider helping!

• Pop In & Read: Offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through August 24, 4-5 p.m. each day, in Long Lake and Maple Plain. The program is coordinated by Orono Community Education and encourages kids to continue reading in the summer. More HS youth and adults are needed! For more info and a schedule, grab a flyer from the Welcome Desk at Trinity or contact Genna Torney at [email protected].

For the fall, more mentors are needed for Orono’s Sparks tutoring program. To learn more, contact Melanie DeLuca at [email protected] or visit Trinity’s website under Outreach.

Thank you for the many ways you serve!

• Volunteers who faithfully serve at Simpson, Interfaith Outreach, quilting, prayer shawl ministries and especially Mpls Crisis Nursery. Trinity volunteers have

now been supporting and serving monthly breakfasts at Crisis Nursery for 10 years!

Worship assistants on Sundays and Wednesdays. Trinity needs between 10 and 28 volunteers each Sunday as greeters, ushers, readers, refreshment hosts and communion assistants. There are also many who help with altar care and bake bread for communion. THANK YOU to the 150+ people who’ve served this past year! If you’re interested in helping this summer, please email Linda Koltes at [email protected] or visit the sign up page online. All the jobs require little experience!

• The many donations provided each month; all items are appreciated.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:23

Groups/Vendors: To reserve a spot at the market, pick up an application at the Sign Up Center or online.

Take home projects: We’re looking for people to help with sewing, wood-working or simple tasks at home. See Sign Up Center or talk to Jill Cornell.

Families Moving Forward & Keys to Success Alumni Picnic & School Supply Drive

Families Moving Forward is hosting an Alumni Picnic on August 7 at the FMF Day Center in Minneapolis. The event will provide an opportunity for current and past families to connect. We hope it builds community and provides an opportunity to tell families about FMF’s additional services and support.

We are collecting new school supplies to give to the families at the picnic. Trinity and Westminster Church are hoping to collect 50 sets of supplies (one for each child). Each set will contain: a backpack, 24-count Crayola crayons, washable markers, scissors, #2 pencils (Ticonderoga preferred), colored pencils, glue sticks, dry erase markers, wide-ruled notebooks, 2 pocket folders, rectangular erasers (not pencil top), and Kleenex (for the classroom). To make a cash donation instead, please indicate “FMF School Supplies” on envelope or memo line. All donations are needed by August 1.

If you would like to volunteer at the August 7 picnic, (and/or provide a side dish), please contact Jennifer Sustacek, 612-600-6975 or [email protected].

¡MUCHAS GRACIAS! THANK YOU!

Through your incredible support of the Give & Grow program at Otten Bros, $1,432.50 was raised for Seeds of Hope students in El Salvador. This amount is almost equivalent to one full year of sponsorship for a university student. Only about 5% of the youth in El Salvador attend university. We know that the students in rural communities who are sponsored by the SOH program would never have the opportunity to attend university if not for your support and the support of our individual sponsors.

In the photo below, second from the left is Karla, who is attending her first year of university thanks to sponsorship from the Gabos & Taylor families. On the right is Marina, a first-year student sponsored by Trinity’s HS youth.

El Salvador Seeds of Hope Mission Trip A group from Trinity is traveling to El Salvador July 8-17 to spend time with our sister church, San Pablo, and Seeds of Hope students. The group will share photos on Facebook and blog during the trip (a link will be available on Trinity’s website). Please keep the group in your prayers: Samantha Carlson, Ron Van Buren, Chuck Ritchie, Jerry Jones, Joyce Trio, Vicki Brink, Kassy Heinrich and Jill Cornell. The group will share about the trip during worship on July 23.

Water Mission Donations & the 2017 Twin Cities Walk for Water on September 16

842,000 people die each year due to diarrhea caused by inadequate drinking water, sanitation and hygiene. That’s approximately 2,300 people per day. And 2.4 billion people live without adequate sanitation—that’s 35% of the global population.

Water Mission, a nonprofit Christian engineering organization, provides solutions for those living in communities around the world who as a result of a disaster or emergency situation.

During these summer months, help us fill up a large water jug at the Welcome Desk with your change to support Water Mission. Also, save the date and join us on Saturday, September 16 for the 2nd Annual Twin Cities Walk for Water in St. Paul.

Thank you to our maintenance volunteers!

I’m pretty particular about getting just the right person to do maintenance – whether it’s roof repair or cleaning the tubes on the boiler. So when I say someone is good at something, well it is heartfelt. Ben Benson, Craig Moleski, Kari Newell, Wanda Fischbach, Buzz Hanning and Brian Droen come on down! These shining stars lent their talents to cut down dead trees, trim others to perfection, clear weeds, and even burned the evidence! To all of you, thank you. –Jeri Lowe
