Invited speakers or panelists will require an abstract number for registration. Please refer to your abstract confirmation page for this number. Invited session chairs and discussants will require the session number for registration. Please contact the session organizer for the session number.

Please DO NOT submit a dummy abstract to tell us that you are a discussant of a session. Your name will be added to the session once your payment is processed.

CONTRIBUTED PAPERS

Contributed papers may be given on any topic of statistical interest. The intent is to broaden the scope of the meetings by covering new developments. Contributed paper sessions should encourage the presentation of papers by younger statisticians.

Authors are encouraged to submit papers on the theme set by 2007 ASA President Mary Ellen Bock, Statistics: Harnessing the Power of Information. Contributed and invited sessions on this subject will be designated in the program as themed sessions. The author of a contributed paper may elect to use one of the following formats:

a) Topic-contributed paper b) Topic-contributed panel c) Topic-contributed poster d) Regular contributed paper e) Regular contributed poster

Please see the descriptions that follow on each of these submission types.

TOPIC-CONTRIBUTED PAPER – Five 20-minute presentations arranged in advance by an organizer or a discussant. There also may be four paper presentations with a discussant. The organizer’s name must accompany the abstract for each presentation. If you would like to organize a session, contact the appropriate member of the Program Committee.

TOPIC-CONTRIBUTED PANEL – Three to five panelists provide commentary on a topic arranged in advance by an organizer. If you would like to organize a topic-contributed panel session, contact the appropriate member of the Program Committee.

Panel presentations each require one abstract submitted by the organizer. All other panelists must be registered in order to be added to the abstract. All panelists will be listed as presenting and corresponding authors.

All panelists: Plan ahead. A registration confirmation number (CNF#) for all panelists must be provided at the time of abstract submission.

The organizer submitting the abstract is responsible for collecting CNF#s from all of his/her panelists and providing these with the abstract submission so fees can be linked to the appropriate abstract.

REGULAR CONTRIBUTED PAPER – Oral presentations of 15 minutes each in a session with five to seven generally related papers.

REGULAR or TOPIC-CONTRIBUTED POSTER PRESENTATIONS – (NEW!) Poster presentations will be on display from 8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday and from 8:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Poster presenters are expected to be present during an assigned 110-minute session that permits face-to-face extended discussions with interested individuals or small groups. There will be three face-to-face poster presentation sessions on Monday and Tuesday: 8:30 a.m.–10:20 a.m.; 10:30 a.m.–12:20 p.m., and 2:00 p.m.–3:50 p.m. There will be two face-to-face poster presentation sessions on Wednesday: 8:30 a.m.–10:20 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.–12:20 p.m. Particular advantages of this poster presentation format, as opposed to a more traditional paper session format, are direct feedback to the author and the ability to display extensive graphical or tabular materials, possibly in addition to a handout. Posters will be grouped according to the topic selected.

Regular Contributed Poster Presentations – Please select a sponsoring Section/society and a topic that best fits your presentation from the list provided below. Regular contributed poster presentations will be grouped by topic.

Topic-Contributed Poster Presentations – For JSM 2007, we have expanded the range of poster presentation sessions to include topic-contributed poster presentations. A topic-contributed poster presentation session will contain three to six posters on a given topic, with roughly the same degree of intellectual cohesion as expected of topic-contributed paper sessions. The topics for a given session may be defined by application, methodological, or theoretical themes. For example:

Analysis of Phase III Clinical Trials Seasonal Adjustment of Economic Time

Series Analysis of Point Source Pollution Data CUSUM Charts Sequential Analysis Application of MCMC Methods to the

Analysis of Complex Survey Data Calibration and Related Inverse Problems Empirical Processes Teaching Introductory Statistics

Topic-contributed poster presentation sessions provide a format in which several colleagues can present different perspectives on a given statistical controversy, or can present side-by-side analyses of an especially challenging dataset. Poster presentations within a given topic cluster will be presented at the same time. Organization and submission of a topic-contributed poster presentation session will follow the same pattern as a topic-contributed paper session. For topic-contributed poster presentations, you will be asked for the organizer’s name and you must select a sponsoring Section/society and a topic that best fits your presentation from the list provided below.

Poster Presentation Topics 1. Applications and case studies 2. Bayesian statistics, hierarchical models 3. Biometrics, bioinformatics, computational biology 4. Bootstrap, resampling methods 5. Business, financial, and marketing statistics 6. Categorical, multivariate analysis 7. Clinical trials, drug discovery 8. Computational statistics, numerical methods,

ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONS A roundtable discussion with coffee or lunch is a fee event. Each has a designated topic and discussion leader. The topic could be related to an exciting session planned for JSM, or it could be another interesting subject. The leader should be a knowledgeable, fun, and an engaging person who can help stimulate a lively discussion. As a fee event activity, roundtable discussions are advertised with the registration materials. Registrants partake in a stimulating discussion and receive a continental breakfast (for morning discussions) or a hot entrée lunch (for afternoon discussions). A roundtable is limited to a maximum of 10 people, including the discussion leader. Roundtable discussions will be thematically arranged in the program over the course of the JSM and give registrants a choice of discussion topics. Roundtable discussions are scheduled Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 7:00 a.m.–8:15 a.m. or 12:30 p.m.–1:50 p.m. The ticket price includes the price of the food and beverage provided to participants. The discussion leader’s ticket is paid for by the sponsoring Section or society. Roundtable discussions are organized by members of the JSM 2008 Program Committee. If you are interested in presenting a roundtable discussion (with coffee or lunch), click here for contact information for the JSM 2008 Program Committee chairs. Once you’re approved by a Section or society to be a roundtable presenter, please submit the abstract for the roundtable online by February 1, 2007.

ABSTRACTS ELIGIBLE FOR THE PROGRAM MUST BE RECEIVED BY JANUARY 22, 2007 (mail) 4

Please select “Roundtables” as the session type and, depending on what you will present during, select either “Roundtable with Lunch,” “Roundtable with Coffee,” or “Speaker Luncheon” as the subtype. The abstract should be a short (two- or three-sentence) description of the discussion (limited to 900 characters). This abstract text will appear, exactly as provided, in the registration materials. Attendees will make their decisions on whether to attend based on the discussion description.

MEETING ORGANIZATION & PARTICIPATION PAPER TRANSFERS – The Program Committee will strive to produce a well-organized program of cohesive sessions. To this end, we ask you to consider allowing the Program Committee to transfer your paper from one Section to another to produce a better fit, or to a poster session if your paper does not fit well with other papers to form a session. Please indicate on the form whether you consent to having your paper moved to a more appropriate Section and indicate your second choice. Also, indicate if you consent to having your paper changed to a poster. You will be informed in advance of any such change.

ACCESSIBILITY FOR THOSE WITH DISABILITIES – If you are a presenting author with mobility impairment and will need wheelchair ramp access to session stages, please check the box on the registration form. If you have any other disability for which you require assistance, please check the box on the registration form regarding disability and attach a statement regarding your disability-related needs. Someone from the ASA Meetings Department will contact you prior to JSM to discuss your needs. Availability of appropriate accommodations cannot be ensured without prior notification.

PRESENTATION LIMITS – To increase the diversity of the JSM participant group, there is a limit on participation. Each participant may do one (1) activity from each of categories A–I:

A. Deliver a main presentation (one of the following):

• Present an invited paper • Serve on an invited panel • Present a regular or topic-contributed paper • Present a regular or topic-contributed poster • Serve as a discussant, panelist, or other

GUIDELINES FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

1. Incomplete or incorrectly formatted abstracts will not be accepted.

2. Abstracts for all session types will be returned if the appropriate registration fee is not submitted for each abstract.

3. The official language for all abstracts, papers, and oral presentations is English.

4. The abstract should state concisely the methods and results of the paper.

5. Abstracts are limited to 900 characters (about 150 words), not including title, author, and keywords. A character is defined as any keystroke, including spaces and punctuation. Abstracts exceeding this count will be truncated to the maximum amount.

6. Revisions - You will be able to revise your abstract text, title, keywords, or add coauthors after the initial submission from December 1, 2006 through February 1, 2007 and from March 26, 2007 through April 11, 2007. To make any of these changes you will need the Abstract Number and your self-selected password. Use the Online Submission Form at www.amstat.org/meetings/jsm/2007. Click on “Program,” then “Abstract Submissions,” then “Edit an Existing Abstract.”

7. December 1, 2006–February 1, 2007: ALL participants must register and pay the registration fee per the instructions under Fees. ABSTRACTS ELIGIBLE FOR THE PROGRAM MUST BE RECEIVED BY JANUARY 22, 2007 (mail) 5

8. Panelists: The organizer of the session needs to submit the abstract and add all the necessary panelist names. A panel abstract is one abstract with multiple speakers attached. There will be one abstract number for each panel session. All other panelists (invited or topic-contributed) also must register and submit payment for JSM 2007 at this time per the instructions above. Please note separate instructions for topic-contributed panelists under Topic-Contributed Panel.

AFTER YOUR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

EDITING ABSTRACTS – If you need to revise your abstract text, title, or keywords, or if you forgot to add your coauthors during the initial abstract submission, you may do so until February 1, 2007, and from March 26–April 11, 2007. You will need the abstract number and your self-selected password to make revisions. Click here to edit your abstract.

DRAFT MANUSCRIPT DEADLINE – (NEW DATE!) For every presentation, one copy of a complete draft manuscript must be sent to the appropriate JSM session chair by May 10, 2007. In late March, the JSM staff will send an email to the presenting author confirming session number with presentation day and time and giving additional instructions for editing and submitting draft manuscripts. Included in this information will be the chair’s name and address, guidelines, and the timeline for submission of a draft manuscript. Depending on the type of paper, you may need to provide other copies as well. If you do not send all required draft copies in a timely manner, your paper will be deleted from the program and be ineligible for publication in JSM Proceedings. This requirement applies to all types of contributed papers (including poster presentations) and to invited sessions with discussants.

The two months before the meeting should be used to prepare the final version of the paper and to work on its presentation. Click here for eligibility requirements and instructions for submitting papers to JSM Proceedings. Please check this site periodically for updates.

ONLINE PROGRAM AND ABSTRACTS – Abstracts will be available online by March 26, 2007, with search capability. All information for online and print publications is collected when abstracts are submitted. Hard copies of the program and abstract books will be distributed in Salt Lake City.

ABSTRACT PREPARATION – All abstracts will be published in the JSM 2007 abstract book. Please submit your abstract free of typographical errors or misspellings. Communication between the ASA and corresponding authors will be done ONLY via email. All those submitting abstracts must have a working email address in order to receive frequent participant updates.

AUDIOVISUAL GUIDELINES – The standard audiovisual equipment supplied for all sessions without cost to the speaker are one overhead projector, one screen, and one LCD/data projector (for computer or PowerPoint presentations). Additional equipment must be ordered and paid for by the presenter. Laptop computers are not provided.

Download the Speaker Audiovisual Order Form.

LAPTOPS ARE NOT PROVIDED FOR SESSION PRESENTATIONS – Presenters using LCD/data projectors for computer or PowerPoint presentations must supply their own laptop computer and required software. It is recommended that multiple speakers in a session using PowerPoint or computer-generated presentations designate one speaker to provide a laptop for the session and load all presentations onto that machine to avoid lost time or faulty connections. Please facilitate this process with your session chair.

Click here for detailed instructions on how to submit an online abstract.
