• Explain what differentiates you – Are you family/pet friendly? Do you stock/grow local products? How easy is it to get to you? Do repeat visitors re-ceive any special discounts?• Source local – Even if you don’t grow or produce your own products, look for ways to integrate local produce into your business so that customers get a real flavor of what your community of-fers and the dollars stay local. Ask fellow businesses to reciprocate too.• Team up with complementary businesses to cross-promote and market your businesses – with something for everyone, tourists might be more likely to make the trip to your community and stay for a while! Get some tips for doing this in this blog from Rieva Lesonsky: "Forget Competition it’s Time for Co-Opetition."• Cash in on what your region has to offer – Is your region known for its wine or green credentials? Are there certain certifications that you can seek out to help promote your business?• Develop messages and advertis-ing that targets larger groups – Can you handle bus tours or school field trips? Any incentives or package deals for larger groups or families?• Remind visitors that they will save money on gas, lodging, airfare and even time by vacationing near home.• Get Involved in Local Events/Festivals – Community fairs, farm-ers markets, sponsored sports events and concerts offer great opportunities to reach locals and tourists alike. Read guest blogger Rieva Lesonsky’s: "Marketing Your Business with Events and Sponsoring or Hosting an Event – 6 Ways to Maximize your Return."

3. Use Location-Based Services to Attract Passersby Don’t forget to take advantage of mobile technology. Promoting your

small business to tourists who might be passing by using mobile apps isn’t that difficult. Groupon, Living Social, Four-Square and ThinkNear, among others, let you post information about your lat-est offers and limited-time deals to con-sumers within a certain distance of your business. You can also schedule deals so they get delivered during key hours. Keep your Google, Yelp, Yellow Pages and other online listings up to date too.

4. Take Your Business on the Road If the best way to reach tourists is to take your business on the road, a concession stand or a booth at a craft or community fair is a great opportunity to bring in extra dollars and spread the word. These articles offer some advice:

• Starting a Mobile Food Concession Business

• Payments On the Go – Turning Your Mobile Device Into a Cash Register

5. Become a National Park Concession Business Did you know there are oppor-tunities for small businesses in national parks? Food, lodging, tours, whitewater rafting, boating, and many other recre-ational activities and amenities in more than 100 national parks are managed by private businesses under contract to the National Park Service. The services, provided by more than 600 concession-ers, gross more than $1 billion every year and provide jobs for more than 25,000 people peak season. Every year, the Park Service issues prospectuses that detail these business opportunities; it also publishes notices at www.fedbi-zopps.gov. Many of these opportunities are smaller operations featuring unique recreation activities.

6. Need Short-Term Capital? Seasonal businesses often have to pour capital into business improve-ments, marketing, inventory and staff long before they can expect to make a profit. If you don’t have sufficient cash flow or funds to prepare your business for the 2018 tourist season, you may want to consider a short-term loan or line of credit. SBA’s CAPLines Program, for example, provides advances against inventory needs and accounts receiv-able to help you weather seasonal sales. Read more and talk to your regional SBA Office for more information.

7. Plan Your Seasonal Work Force If your business counts on the summer season or tourist trade, then start planning your seasonal workforce now. If you’re new to this process or have questions about hiring and com-pensating seasonal workers (for exam-ple, do you need to pay unemployment taxes for seasonal workers?), check out this blog – "5 Things to Know Now about Hiring Temporary or Seasonal Workers" – for tips on hiring and working with seasonal workers within the law.

8. Partner with Local Business Groups Reach out to your local Cham-ber of Commerce and local tourism as-sociations or sector organizations that promote clusters of businesses in the same business sector such as hotels, res-taurants, tour operators, B&B’s, camp grounds and so on. Many of these offer small businesses an opportunity to par-ticipate in their targeted and collective approach to seasonal marketing.

Profile on Josephine County

Rhiannon HenkelsJosephine County Clerk

I was born in Grants Pass, Oregon, however shortly after I was born my family moved to So. California. After a few family vacations to Grants Pass, my husband and

I decided in 2004, to relocate & raise our family here. We have two beautiful daughters and have been foster parents

in Josephine County for over 7 years. We are adopting two amazing teenagers who are currently placed in our home. My husband is self-employed and I have worked in the Jose-phine County Clerk’s office for over 10 years. I was appoint-ed Josephine County Clerk in June 2017.

When I am not working I am: Spending time with my family, watching

my kids play sports, volunteering and fundraising for local organizations, (one

very close to my heart-- Royal Family Kids), or just simply relaxing.

What am I reading now: The Shack & The 5 Love Languages

(but if I’m being honest, being a parent to 4 kids doesn’t lend a lot

of time for reading.)

What excites me about coming to work every day:

Helping the citizens of Josephine County achieve their business needs when they

come into my office.

The County Clerk is a nonpartisan elected official as provided in the Oregon Constitution.

The duties of the office include:• Conducting elections in Josephine County. • Keeping public records for the county, including Board of Commissioners’ documents. • Recording land records and liens. • Processing Board of Property Tax Appeals. • Issuing marriage licenses. • Perform marriage ceremonies• Accepting United States Passport applications.

Where I would like to see my Department in five years:

I would like to see my department con-tinue to provide the excellent customer service that we are known to offer on a

daily basis. As with any department, there is always room for improvement and I am

always looking for ways to better assist our customers.

After getting some big snow days that didn’t allow Brenda Turner, Oregon State Cham-

ber of Commerce staff and facilita-tor, to travel from the Bend area in early February, the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Com-merce was finally able to hold their Board of Directors Strategic Plan-ning session in late March.

The board really dug in, did some magnificent work, and had a little bit of fun throughout the pre-evening and the long day following. The board and staff reviewed mis-sion, vision, strengths and weak-nesses and in the end came up with some areas of focus for strategy de-velopment.

• Engage with other area enti-ties to find a solution for forest fires

• Create a value proposition for all businesses

• Seek out and be relevant to the next generation of leaders

• Further strengthen commu-nication to increase awareness and engagement of members and Board in fighting anti-business legislation

There is still a lot work to be done in setting up strategy and fi-nalizing the goals, but chamber staff and board are looking forward to the next steps to providing our members and community a strong chamber that serves the business needs and helps build a stronger economy for the area.

The chamber would like to give special thanks to Asante, Pacific Power and Southern Oregon Sanita-tion for hosting us throughout the process.

Don's Bike CenterWHAT NEW IN CYCLING: Electric Bikes aka Pedal Assist Bikes are gaining in popularity. The rise in popularity is twofold, the first being that lesser priced models are now available. The second reason is that there is more interest in commuting to work by a younger aged work force that wants to get physical exercise and not arrive to the work place sweaty. With more people choosing to live closer to their jobs Electric bikes hold great appeal as a commuter op-tion. There is yet another interest for many others that draw them to Elec-tric bikes and that is the riders who just need some assistance to continue riding as they once had been, the rid-ers who can’t go as far as they once did or the riders who need pedal assist to keep up with their riding buddies.

Don’s Bike Center is not only a great place to purchase a quality bike, it’s also a place

to get connected with other cyclists. Don’s Bike Center has recently started Facebook groups for leisure riders (city rides), road riders and mountain bikers. Their hope is that more people with the same riding interests will become connected and find riding partners. If you’re want-ing to find people to ride with this is a great opportunity to meet other rid-ers. https://www.facebook.com/pg/DonsBikeCenter/groups/

Southern Oregon Air Academy (SOAA) held an open house event March 15 at the Grants

Pass Airport in the Dutch Bros hanger. The event was arranged with the assistance of several part-nerships, Larry Graves Manger of the Grants Pass Airport, Caleb LaPlante Board Member for SOAA and Daniella Bivins Southern Or-egon Education Service District (SOESD). Guest speaker Shaesta Waiz, an Afghan- American and the first female as well as the youngest pilot to fly solo around the world in a sin-gle engine aircraft in 2017. Following her passion with aviation at age 18 and then at 30 years old Shaesta flew 145 days and 22 countries. Founding Dreams Soar her goal is to inspire young women and men in STEM aviation. Lamar Haugaard with Alaska Airlines was on hand at the event. His company is currently working on a partnership with lo-

cal company Pacific Aviation to provide funding for flight training to young students that will commit to a future job within their Alaska/ Horizons Airlines companies. It is expected that in the next 20 years there will be a considerable pilot shortage with military and re-gional carriers already feeling the impacts. Assisted by a grant from Oregon Department of Education for $382,286 awarded to SOESD the groups are partnering to spark middle school and high school stu-dents interest in pursuing aviation sciences, aerospace engineering and related CTE/STEM subjects by offering after school and summer camp experiences to students. Stay tuned, there is much more to come in these exciting times for Grants Pass Airport and the surrounding area.http://money.cnn.com/2017/07/27/news/companies/pilot-shortage-fig-ures/index.html

founding chapters of a state-wide women en-trepreneur’s association. After two decades of success, we gained greater independence and a stronger local identity by separating from the state association and forming Women En-

trepreneurs of Southern Oregon (WESO). Over the years we have expanded our bene-fits and offered more opportunities for members

to network, promote their businesses, gain new customers, and develop their business skills and knowledge.
