UNDERSTANDING THE FINANCIAL AID PROCESS
Applying for financial aid can be the most complex process when applying to college. Some students are intimated by the different forms and how complicated they look; but it is important for all seniors to complete ALL Financial Aid Forms on time and accurately to avoid delays in receiving financial aid.
To apply for State Financial Aid (including State Grants, State Scholarships and Bright Futures) seniors must complete the application as soon as possible (after December 1 and prior to graduation) at www.FloridaStudentFinancialAid.org.
To receive grants and scholarships from private colleges and universities some schools may require that students complete the CSS profile. Students must visit www.collegeboard.com for a list of schools requiring this form and for the online application.
To receive the Federal Financial Aid, the MOST IMPORTANT step is filing the FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA) as soon as possible after January 1 of their senior year. The fastest and most accurate way to complete the FAFSA is online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

The FAFSA is the form seniors need to complete in order to see if they are eligible for any kind of federal financial aid. Every college-bound student should submit the FAFSA regardless of how high family income may be or if they have a pre-paid college plan or scholarship.
The information provided by the student to the federal processor on the FAFSA form is put through a calculation established by the federal government. This calculation generates an Expected Family Contribution (EFC).
Eligibility for need based aid is calculated by subtracting the student’s EFC, along with any outside resources (i.e. scholarships received) from the Cost of Attendance (COA) from the institution applying to.

If the student’s EFC and other resources are less than the COA, then the student may have financial need, and the college/university at that point will send the student the Award Letter which may include a financial aid package with grants, work-study, and loans. Students that complete the financial aid process late may find that although they have financial need, they may not receive that much aid because of their late application.
FAFSA INFORMATION (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)The FAFSA online will be available after January 1, 2009 at www.fafsa.ed.gov . Those students that will not be completing the financial form online will be able to obtain a paper FAFSA by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) or by visiting www.edpubs.org. Students may request up to three copies of the paper application and should receive their FAFSAs in three to seven business days. Remember seniors don’t submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid until after January 1, 2009.

Who is eligible? This program is intended for low-income students with excellent academic records who are committed to pursuing a career in journalism. To apply for the program, you must meet the following qualifications:
- You must currently be a junior in high school.
- You must live in the continental United States.
- You must have at least an unweighted 3.5 grade point average (out of 4.0).
- You must have an interest in journalism.
- The combined income of your custodial parent(s)/guardian(s) plus child support payments, if any, must not exceed $45,000. (Note: This program is for students from under-resourced financial backgrounds. If the combined income of your custodial parent(s)/guardian(s) plus child support payments, if any, exceeds $45,000 and you still wish to apply, you may attach a statement explaining why you believe your family qualifies as financially under-resourced.)
What is the Princeton University Summer Journalism Program? We welcome about 20 high school students from low-income backgrounds every summer to Princeton's campus for an intensive, 10-day seminar on journalism. The program's goal is to diversify college and professional newsrooms by encouraging outstanding students from low-income backgrounds to pursue careers in journalism. All expenses, including students' travel costs to and from Princeton, are paid for by the program. Students who attend the program come from across the country.What is the program like? Classes at the program are taught by reporters and editors from The New York Times, The Washington Post, The New Republic, The New Yorker, CNN and ABC News, among other media outlets. Students tour the Times and CNN; cover a professional sports event (in past years, a Yankees, Mets, Jets or Liberty game); cover news events in the Princeton area; film and produce a TV segment; and report, write, edit and design their own newspaper, The Princeton Summer Journal, which is published on the program's last day. The program is also designed to give students a taste of what life is like at one of the best colleges in the country—students live on campus and eat in one of the university's cafeterias—and to prepare them to apply to top schools. Students meet with Princeton's top professors as well as the school's president and its dean of admissions. Students attend seminars on every aspect of the college admissions process. They also take a practice SAT and attend an SAT class taught by Princeton Review.

Through the support of Florida State University, each participant is furnished a scholarship valued at $2,800.00, covering full room and board, supplementary health and accident insurance, and academic expenses of tuition, laboratory supplies and computer time. The program also covers the costs of the weekend excursions.
Participant costs include the following: - Textbooks for academic courses . . . . $150 - $200 - Transportation between Tallahassee and your home. - Incidental living expenses. This can vary from $25 to $50 per week, depending on the student’s spending habits.
Transportation on campus is furnished by a free bus system, off-campus transportation by the city TalTran bus system and by the program vans. Automobiles are not permitted for YSP students, but bicycles are strongly encouraged and are a significant asset for transportation around campus.
Selection Process
YSP is designed for students who have completed the eleventh grade in a Florida public or private high school. A few exceptionally qualified and mature tenth graders have been selected in past years.
All applicants must have completed Algebra II, and have earned at least a "B" average (unweighted) in academic courses. A score at the 90th percentile or better in science or mathematics on a nationally standardized exam, such as the SAT or PSAT, is also required. Computer experience is expected.
Using information obtained from the application, transcripts, and the two letters of recommendation (counselor and teacher), the applicants are evaluated by the YSP faculty in the areas of academic achievement (grades, test scores, curriculum quality, class rank); scientific potential (research experience, mathematics and science competitions, academic and professional goals); personal characteristics (leadership, maturity, self-confidence, integrity, reliability, interpersonal and communication skills, high school and community activities).

Florida State University is pleased to announce the 2009 Young Scholars Program (YSP), a residential science and mathematics program for Florida high-school students with significant potential for careers in the sciences, engineering, and health professions. The Young Scholars Program is supported with funding from Florida State University.
Academic Program

The curriculum includes formal course work in mathematics, computer science, and science ethics for all students, as well as an elective course in molecular biology or modern physics. The courses and their associated laboratories are specifically designed for this program; they are not high school or college courses. The emphasis throughout is on problem solving, on the integration of contemporary theory with application, and on the ethical and societal framework of science and technology.
Accommodations
Students live in Osceola Hall, an excellent, private residence hall on the edge of the Florida State campus near the science complex. All meals are furnished at the Osceola dining room. Female and male students are housed in separate wings, with two students in each room. Four full-time YSP counselors live in Osceola on the student floors for close supervision.
Students are expected to demonstrate a high degree of self-discipline. They are treated as adults and are expected to conduct themselves as adults. However, rules of conduct and appropriate dress are strictly observed for the well-being of the students and for the reputation of the program. The use of alcohol or illegal drugs, under any circumstances, will result in immediate dismissal from the program.
