Start your adventure in the very same place that Jasper’s first Superintendent called home. This designated Heritage Building is not only a year-round information hub, but a popular gathering place and frequent venue for outdoor entertainment.

Tourism Jasper and Parks Canada staff work closely together, advising you on all things Jasper – what to do, where to stay, where to eat, trail conditions, wildlife sightings, and information on backcountry adventures.

THE ICEFIELDS PARKWAY TURNS 75 IN 2015ORIGINALLY OPENED IN 1940, THIS ICONIC SCENIC DRIVE HAS WELCOMED MILLIONS OF VIS ITORS AND SEEN MANY CHANGES OVER THE PAST 75 YEARS.

Long before Canada even existed, the area was known to Aboriginal people on both sides of the Continental Divide. Aboriginal guides shared their routes and knowledge with early European explorers, traders and railroaders, as well as with the first recreational mountaineers.

Adventurous early visitors called it the "Wonder Trail" and the "Glacier Trail". Prior to the completion of the Parkway, the journey took weeks by pack horse. From 1931 to its completion in 1940, crews built the "Wonder Trail" into a single track road as a Depression Era make-work project. The goal of the builders was to make this mountain path in the shadow of the Continental Divide accessible to all. They named the road the Icefields Parkway.

Today, stretching 232 km (144 miles), this is a journey through the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site, allowing visitors to experience the mountains, glaciers, alpine meadows and turquoise lakes that define the beauty of the Canadian Rockies. This high-elevation mountain road provides a multitude of opportunities that change with the seasons. From hiking, camping and picnicking to sightseeing and Ice Explorer tours, the possibilities are endless.

TOP 3 BE ACHESL AKE ANNETTE The perfect destination for an epic day with the whole family. Awe-inspiring turquoise green water and a long sandy beach to enjoy. Lake Annette includes a 2.4 km paved trail around the lake shore. Cooking shelters and a playground can be found a few steps away from the beach.

L AKE EDITH The beach is at its best mid to end summer when the level of the lake is getting lower. This makes for warmer water, a wider beach and a great place for kids to play.

PYR AMID L AKE Pyramid Lake may not have the spectacular turquoise water Lake Annette and Lake Edith have to offer but its amazing mountain views and clean sandy beaches make this a go-to destination for summer fun. The lake offers a selection of several beaches. If you feel like exploring the lake, boats can be rented at the lakeside resort.

All three locations offer picnic tables, metal fire rings with grills and outhouses.

⊲ There’s a bit of drama in the park about pine trees! Watch for street theatre performances around the Heritage Firehall in town and at Whistlers campground.

PR ACTICE YOUR SKILLS WHILE ENJOYING THE SCENERY (2.8 km one way) Follow the Wapiti Trail to Red Squirrel Run all the way to Old Fort Point. There, lock your bike in the rack and climb up the stairs for an impressive view of the Athabasca Valley and the townsite. Return via Red Squirrel Run back to town or continue along the Lac Beauvert Road to the lake (1.0 km one way). Wide level surface, with a few roots and rocks.

VENTURE OUTSIDE OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE (13.2 km return) Begin your adventure at the Sixth Bridge, a short drive outside town, toward Maligne Lake. The Overlander (Trail 10) brings you to the historic Moberly Cabin. The trail follows the Athabasca River, relatively flat, with a grassy double track to start. Further afield, the trail curls and dips over gravel beds and root features. Make some noise before bursting through the wolf willows to the meadows, as this is grizzly country.

DARK-SK Y PRESERVE (DSP)A Dark-Sky Preserve is an area in which no artificial lighting is visible and active measures are in place to educate and promote the reduction of light pollution to the public and nearby municipalities. DARK SK Y V IE WING T IPS AND SAFET Y ON YOUR OWNTAKE SOME FRIENDS It’s best to visit some of these places as a group and this is especially important at night. Wildlife do use some of these areas at dawn or dusk for grazing and feeding, so always make noise and give space to anything that might be in the area. Move together as a group, and when wildlife is present, adapt your plans accordingly.

COME PREPARED Mountain weather is infamous for changing quickly. Bring a jacket and warm clothes in case those heavenly skies turn grey, or the temperatures drop to conditions that compromise your comfort level. Bring plenty of spare food, water and blankets.

DRIVE SAFELY Watch yourself and the roads around you – weather in the Rockies can change very quickly. Confine your night sky viewing activities to areas you can count on for ease of access, and make sure your vehicle is winter tire equipped and ready for snow.

BRING B INOCUL ARS & SCOPE You don’t need to be an avid astronomer to benefit from the use of these tools. Binoculars are often a good tool that beginner astronomers use and have the benefit of being less costly and a lot more portable. Scopes range in price (from a few bucks to hundreds of dollars) and in weight as well. Pick a location with access appropriate to the gear you are bringing.

INVEST IN A SLR Your best bet is a wide-angle lens with an F-stop of 2.8 or higher. Beautiful images of the night sky are made more possible with a good camera, a tripod and the proper lens to do the job.

GO RED, OR GO HOME It takes up to 20 minutes for the human eye to properly adjust to dark viewing conditions, and a blast from the simplest torch or headlamp can set you back to square one. Best areas for stargazing are those places off of roadways and away from busy campsites and picnic areas. Bring red cellophane and adapt your flashlights to shine red or use red light lamps if you need a steady source of light.

ATTEND A DARK SK Y PROGR AM If there’s a major event such as an eclipse or a meteor shower, there will probably be a program offered. These programs are opportunistic in nature, so inquire locally at the Jasper Park Information Centre.

The Tonquin Valley and the Skyline trails are great destinations in the fall. Be prepared to snuggle up as we do get cold nights at this time of the year.

RED CHA IR PROGRAMIn the summer of 2014, six red Adirondack chairs were placed in various locations for you to discover and enjoy. When you find one, take a moment to sit down and take in the beautiful surroundings. Learn more about this location by reading the interpretive plaque on the chair’s armrest.

WINTER: THE SEASON TO PLAY.WELCOME TO WINTER IN JASPER NATIONAL PARK . Whether you’re here for a family adventure or a relaxing getaway, there’s no better way to experience this pristine mountain landscape than on foot, or even on bike! Lace up your shoes, wax up your skis, strap on a pair of snowshoes and enjoy one of our many winter trails.

FAT BIK ING Fat biking has arrived! Oversized tires let a bike roll where it has not rolled before. On snow, wide tires have more surface area and simply “float” over the white stuff. Jasper has 10.5 km of flat-packed trails on the Pyramid Bench, perfect for fat biking. Riders are also permitted on frozen lakes – assess the ice thickness and head out for a new winter adventure! You can rent bikes from a number of businesses in town.

Flat packed trails are also ideal for winter walking and running. Head out with the gang…and a thermos of hot chocolate!

SNOWSHOE ING After a fresh snowfall, take in one of Jasper’s 200 km of valley trail on snowshoes! Favourite snowshoe routes are signed on the Pyramid Bench and provide access to great viewpoints (10.2 km in total).

For the keeners that seek solitude, deep snow and beautiful, rolling terrain, venture down the Icefields Parkway to Sunwapta Falls (52 km). Strap on your snowshoes and head into Big Bend Campground for the day (6.4 km). Situated along the Athabasca River, this little piece of paradise is well worth the journey.

SK AT ING AND CROSS-COUNTRY SK I ING And don’t forget…Mildred and Pyramid lakes are monitored for ice depth and cleared for skaters. They both offer free-skating ovals and rinks for shinny hockey. There is nothing quite like skating in the great outdoors! For those who are set on hitting the trails on cross-country skis, there are over 70 km of groomed trails to choose from the valley.

BIRD WATCHINGJasper’s spring migration takes place late April and early May. Here are two great locations for bird watching:

⊲ VALLE Y OF THE F IVE L AKES A great variety of habitats makes this a perfect location to hear and see several species of birds. Follow trail 9 toward Wabasso Lake and you may see some sparrows breeding in the wetlands. The aspen stands are good places to spot kinglets, flycatchers (dusky and least) and warbling vireo, while the lakes are good for viewing ducks.

⊲ COTTONWOOD SLOUGH There are many different species that nest in the wetland and the nearby aspen forest. Here you may see common yellowthroat, warbling vireo, many different species of ducks, Lincoln’s sparrow and ruby-crowned kinglet.

Every Sunday in May and June, join a Friends of Jasper National Park volunteer to participate in the association’s free Early Birds spring

program. These morning birding adventures start at 8:00 a.m. and participants meet outside of the Nature Calls Building. To find out more about this program or other birding experiences offered in the park, visit www.friendsofjasper.com.



SPRING: SNOW IS MELTING, FLOWERS ARE BLOOMING AND BEARS ARE WAKING UP. OBSERVE NATURE COMING BACK TO LIFE AFTER A LONG WINTER.

WILDL IFE SAFE-V IE WING T IPSSpring is a great time to see Jasper’s abundant wildlife, including deer, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, coyote, and black and grizzly bear. In order to keep them wild and undisturbed, here are a few safe-viewing tips:

SEE ING WILDLIFE WHEN DRIVING IN THE PARK: ⊲ Consider not stopping. If you stop:

⊲ Pull over where it is safe to do so;

⊲ Observe and photograph from the safety of your car;

⊲ Use your hazard lights to alert other drivers;

⊲ Remain a respectful distance from the animals.

L AUNCHING IN SUMMER 2015, the new Wildlife Guardian radio station will bring wildlife interpretation to the airwaves!

Listen to our radio station to get information on wildlife up the road, and to learn more about wildlife and safety in the park.

SPRING FLOWERSBefore the snow has melted, species like prairie crocus are already emerging from the ground. At the beginning of April, this flower blooms along trails 6 and 6b.

In mid-May, the calypso orchid brings colour to the forest floor. Growing among mosses, this beautiful orchid can be found along several trails in the montane forest. We recommend observing them from a distance since calypso orchids are very susceptible to disturbance.

As summer approaches, orchid lovers should explore the “Flower Loop”. This short 2.1 km loop is home to many species of orchids, such as the sparrow’s-egg, the spotted orchid and the yellow lady’s-slipper.

When exploring at higher elevations, keep an eye out for globeflowers. This species pushes through the snow to bloom.

JASPER’S TOP 5 ROAD RIDESCANADA’S L ARGEST CYCLING R ACE , THE WORLD -RENOWNED TOUR OF ALBERTA , is incorporating a Mountain Stage for the first time ever in Jasper National Park on September 4 and 5, 2015. Even for professional cyclists, the climb to Marmot Basin will be a challenge. Jasper is an ideal destination for cyclists of all levels to challenge themselves, and the road rides listed below are a great place to start.

⊲ CAVELL ROAD Jasper’s ultimate road ride is the freshly paved 14 km Edith Cavell Road climb. It’s almost exactly 50 km round-trip from the town of Jasper, with just under 1000 metres of climbing. LOCAL T IP : Ride it before the road opens on June 15 and enjoy the road without traffic.

⊲ MALIGNE L AKE Jasper’s best 100 km ride, the road to Maligne Lake is as challenging as it is scenic. Long sustained climbs are mixed in with some of Jasper’s best wildlife viewing along this route, especially along Medicine Lake where Big Horn sheep are commonly seen. LOCAL T IP : Don’t be fooled by the profile. Although it’s mostly downhill on the ride back, headwinds can make it equally challenging.

⊲ FALLS LOOP Combining 93A and the Icefields Parkway, the 60 km Athabasca Falls ride is one of Jasper’s few circle routes. LOCAL T IP : Ride the loop counter-clockwise to keep the harder climbs at the beginning of the route.

⊲ HOT SPRINGS The Miette Hot Springs Road is one of the quietest paved roads in Jasper National Park. It’s also the most customizable route, too, because it’s possible to make it as short as 34 km when starting from Pocahontas Cabins, and as long as 120 km if riding to and from the town of Jasper. LOCAL T IP : Shorten the ride and avoid the head winds that plague the return ride to Jasper by driving east and parking at Talbot Lake.

⊲ CELL SERVICE CIRCUIT Looking to sneak in a ride without leaving cell service? It’s possible to create quite the circuit. Start with climbs up to Marmot Basin and the Jasper SkyTram, and then take the back road from Old Fort Point to the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. LOCAL T IP : For even more kilometres, add in out-and-back segments to Maligne Canyon or Pyramid Lake.
