News in Brief

Funding Opportunity

The National Stronger Regions Fund is a programme that will provide funding of $1 billion over 5 years to fund priority infrastructure in regional communities including the Perth metropolitan area. Local government and incorporated not-for-profit organisations are eligible to apply and the funding is for capital projects which involve construction of new infrastructure, or the upgrade, extension or enhancement of existing infrastructure. Grants are between $20,000 and $10 million. Round Two will open for applications on 1 May 2015.

Workshops will be held in January to provide information about the fund.

Lotterywest supports RSLWA’s Anzac Day 2015

Premier Colin Barnett and Veterans Minister Joe Francis today announced a Lotterywest grant to the Returned & Services League of Australia WA Branch (RSLWA) to support Anzac Day 2015 commemorations across Western Australia. Mr Barnett said the $1.5 million grant would make sure the RSL had the resources to manage Anzac commemorations and the expected increase in attendance at services during the centenary year.

“The Anzac Centenary is a significant milestone in our history. With 100 Anzac Day services throughout WA, I encourage all West Australians to attend a service in their local community to remember the contributions of the original Anzacs and all Australian service personnel,” the Premier said.

The grant will support the planning and event management of the Kings Park Dawn Service, the Perth Anzac Day parade, the Gunfire Breakfast in Stirling Gardens as well as commemorative activities in 83 metropolitan and regional communities throughout the State.

Recreational Fishing Grants Open

Applications are now open for grants under the State Government’s recreational fishing fund. Fisheries Minister Ken Baston encouraged incorporated individuals, research institutions, government departments, clubs/organisations or community groups to register expressions of interests for Round 4 of the Recreational Fishing Initiatives Fund by February 8, 2015.

Since 2011, more than $6.5 million of recreational fishing licence money has been invested into projects.

Club volunteers - one of a kindSport and physical recreational organisations attract the most volunteers in Australia with about 14 per cent of the adult population (2.3million people) donating their time each year*. For clubs that cannot afford to employ a roster of full-time paid staff, volunteers are the heart and soul of their operations.

Creative tips to attract more volunteers to your club

• Be flexible and casual with your available volunteer positions. While you might be looking for a regular volunteer coach or official to watch over club games, for many casual volunteers the prospect of committing to a role which requires prior experience, further training or reference checks might seem just too difficult. To engage this type of volunteer who wants lots of flexibility, try offering a more generalist volunteer role where the level of responsibilities is not as high.

• Approach hobbyists - Try looking for Graphic Design or Journalism volunteers to help your club with its social media and newsletters. Many university or school graduates would love the opportunity to help you with your marketing and public relations activities. You might be able to find some willing individuals who love taking photographs for a hobby – ask them if they would like to take photos of your games or your member nights. The volunteer would get such enjoyment out of this, and your club will get some great photos.

• Promotion - Word-of-mouth is a powerful recruitment tool! Even if members attend regular games or events, they might not realise that there are volunteer opportunities available.

• Make volunteering quick, easy and flexible - Develop a simple form which allows individuals to fill in their details and submit their expressions of interest to volunteer at your club. This provides your club with access to a database of potential volunteers which you can group and sort into categories for when future opportunities arise

• Recognition - Include recognition as part of your volunteer recruitment and retainment plan. While volunteers understand that there is no real expectation of reward or formal compensation when they commit to helping out, it’s always nice to show your appreciation and recognise their valuable contributions. According to the National Survey of Volunteering Issues, the two most frequently mentioned factors that volunteers value most about their volunteering experience were “the difference I make to the community” and “the sense of purpose it gives me” (Volunteering Australia, 2011, p 9). So whilst financial reimbursement for travel and out-of-pocket expenses are certainly ways to show appreciation for your volunteers, a sincerely written thank you note expressing appreciation for a volunteer’s effort and time, or a round of free food and drink down at the club bar may be all you need to keep your volunteers feeling happy and content.

A Regular Club Member’s Night is a great way to get members involved and raise awareness of your club in the community.

From themed dinners to party games, there are many forms of entertainment which can be used to get club members engaging with each other while having a great time.

Holding a Member’s Night on a weekly basis is a great way for members to meet other members, form social friendships and get involved with the club community - as seen at the Dudley Park Bowling & Recreation Club. A family-friendly Member’s Night is held every Friday where regulars are treated to a changing selection of food, a live band, raffles, a comedian and prizes. The night is “ever so popular” suggesting the “good, wholesome home cooked meals and the biggest dance floor in town” are appealing aspects. As a variety of dance group lessons are held during the week at the club, many members show of their diverse dancing skills including the jive, line dancing and rock and roll. A raffle is also held with prizes dependent on season and might include fresh crayfish or delicious prawns. Member’s Night at the Dudley Park Bowling Club often incorporates a theme with past events including Christmas in July, Football Fever, Black Friday or an African Evening.

A theme can be used as a talking point for members and is also a great promotional tool which could attract more attendees. Decorations, food, drinks and prizes that integrate a theme can be an enjoyable way to deliver something different to club members. The Royal Perth Golf Club holds a themed buffet dinner for their members, with exciting cuisine and decorations which have in the

past focused on Thai, a Trip to Hawaii, Oktoberfest, Christmas in July and an Australian barbeque.

The themed Paella Night was a favourite, with a large paella pan set up in the lounge and filled the room with amazing aromas. Head Chef John O’Hara cooked the paella whilst answering questions from guests and giving tips on cooking paella at home. The RPGC also pays extra attention to the beverages that are served alongside the food, making sure they perfectly compliment the theme. Guests were treated to sangrias on Spanish Night, and delicious Italian liquor on Italian Night.

This perfect balance of food, beverages, decorations, prizes and entertainment ensures a winning formula for any Club Member’s Night. These fun and exciting events bring members closer together and help instil your club’s philosophy amongst them. The positive vibes and word-of-mouth from those who attended the night can also attract even more members to join your club. You don’t need a large budget to make your Member’s Night great, just a great bunch of people.

How does your club put a special twist on Member’s Night? Do you have intense rounds of Chase the Ace, local entertainment, bingo nights or great food?

If you think you could rival other clubs for Western Australia’s best Member’s Night you could always prove it at this year’s Clubs WA Awards for Excellence. Final nomination categories will be released soon and expression of interest forms are now available on the Clubs WA website. Good luck!

**Examples and quotes have been taken from the nomination forms for the 2014 Clubs WA Clubs in the Community Award.

PickStar is the only company in Australia that allows you to make direct offers to past and current athletes across all codes. Whether your budget is as little as $400, or if you are creating a more elaborate event with a significantly larger budget, PickStar allows you to pitch your opportunity directly to our list of elite athletes. The PickStar team will assist you in finding the right athlete for your event.

PickStar’s athlete database is second to none, and has enabled us to create amazing sporting events and marketing campaigns that have not previously been possible.

How did Pickstar come about?PickStar was co-founded by James Begley and Matthew Pavlich. The concept was born to bridge a gap they both perceived between sports stars and people who want to connect with them. Through his leadership work with corporate entities, Begley witnessed a growing desire for businesses to engage with athletes. As captain of the Fremantle Dockers, Pavlich became aware of the large number of athletes, across codes, who are interested in actively engaging with businesses for commercial opportunities whilst still actively participating in their chosen sports. In addition, he experienced athletes expressing a desire to grow their networking prospects for the critical post career transition phase that all sports stars will inevitably face.

Despite the increasing interest from both businesses and sports stars, there was no service in Australia that facilitated creating connections between both sides. PickStar was born in order to bridge that gap and make it possible for everyone to reach the stars.

PickStar’s MissionPickStar looks to provide Australians with greater, easier access to their sporting stars, while at the same time delivering the platform for Australian athletes to engage and connect with the public in

Bringing you closer to the stars

ways that suit their abilities, interests and schedules. PickStar creates the opportunity for an athlete to use their profile to inspire and engage others, while also enabling organisations, individuals, clubs and schools to create interest and excitement in their events and marketing campaign.

The TeamJames Begley, Co-FounderBegley played 61 games for St. Kilda and Adelaide over seven years. After his football career, James consulted to the AFL Players Association delivering the Apprenticeship Program to all first year draftees. James was appointed as General Manager of Leadership & Development to the Fremantle Dockers players and coaches for four years. In addition, Begley has delivered many corporate leadership programs to companies such as Landcorp, Synergy, Austereo, Mirvac, BHP, Local Government, Superannuation, the Australian Rowing Team, and the East Fremantle Football Club to name a few. James has a Certificate 4 in Training and Assessment and is a DISC Advanced accredited consultant and facilitator.

Matthew Pavlich, Co-FounderPavlich has played over 300 games across 14 AFL seasons with the Fremantle Dockers, including seven years as captain. In 2014, an innovative soft-serve machine was featured on Master Chef Australia. In the episode, aspiring chefs had to create the perfect gelato cone using the Carpigiani Soft&Go machine.

The Soft&Go is a compact soft-serve machine designed for small spaces - it has the smallest footprint in the market. It is the perfect solution for Clubs since it is very easy to use and offers high production via the use of peristaltic pump.

This system has the advantage of delivering a product with up to 50 per cent overrun (amount of air that is whipped into the ice-cream). This guarantees great profit for every single serve, while the spiral, one-piece beater works perfectly with any type of mix to produce an excellent frozen dessert with a creamy and compact texture.

Simple and easy to clean, the Soft&Go can be used for ice-cream, gelato, sorbet, frozen yoghurt and much more. The product can be dispensed in cones, cups or small glasses.

Soft&Go is distributed in Australia by Majors Group who is the exclusive importer of Carpigiani equipment. Carpigiani is a world-wide leading manufacturer of ice-cream and gelato machines, which are entirely designed and built in Italy using cutting-edge technology and quality materials.

For 20-years Majors Group has been specialising in distributing ice-cream and frozen yoghurt equipment and ingredients and also drinks dispenser solutions.

If you would like more information about catering solutions for your club, please contact Majors Group by calling 1800 625 677 or by emailing [email protected]

Your investment is in good hands with Club Plus Super. With the silly season fast approaching, super is the probably the furthest thing from your mind. You may not realise it yet, but it is reassuring to know that one of your most important, and perhaps largest, investments is in good hands. This may be a good time to think about “What are the most important aspects about super” to consider when comparing super funds.

Value for money When it comes to comparing superannuation funds, the amount of fees you pay is the aspect that seems to attract most attention ─ and with good reason, as seemingly small differences in ongoing fees can make a significant impact on returns over time and hence your eventual retirement savings.

InsuranceQuite simply, for most people the cheapest access to death, disability and income protection insurance will be via a superannuation fund. This is because super funds of a sufficient size can obtain group or bulk discounts for members which allows them access to lower premiums or cover up to a certain limit without having to provide medical evidence. However, even with group insurance, there are large differences in premiums and cover levels between superannuation funds.

One of the main benefits of having insurance through Club Plus Super is the availability of automatic cover which means, if you’re an eligible industry member, you do not have to complete a medical questionnaire or undergo a health examination to be accepted for death, TPD and income protection insurance. In particular, our income protection benefit provides 90 per cent income replacement (plus 9.5 per cent super guarantee contribution) after a 21-day waiting period, with 45 or 90 day waiting periods also available at a lower cost.

Investment options and performanceIn terms of investment options, a good superannuation fund will offer a broad selection that will appeal to member’s varying levels of risk tolerance. These will include pooled asset allocation choices of balanced, conservative and growth selections, as well as single asset class options such as cash and shares.

With Club Plus Super, members also have the ability to “self-manage” their investments through a Direct Investment Option (DIO), which provides access to term deposits, a selection of exchange traded funds (ETFs) and shares on the S&P/ASX 300.

Whilst past performance is never a guarantee of how a fund will perform in the future, we have continued to deliver solid investment returns. Information about our returns and long-term investment performance can be viewed at www.clubplussuper.com.au/investments/performance

Finally, a super fund that supports you during your working life and retirement. It goes without saying that most super funds will allow you to retain your membership as you move from job to job. At Club Plus Super we will also provide the support you need to assist the seamless transfer of your superannuation benefit as you move from accumulation into pension phase.

Our Club Plus Pension provides a regular and tax-effective income stream in retirement as well as the option to convert some of your super to a Transition to Retirement Pension while you are still working.

If you need reassurance or further assistance about why you are with Club Plus Super, please contact us on 1800 680 627 or visit www.clubplussuper.com.au

Main Features of Super FundsThe following is an overview of the main features you should compare: • Value for money ─ low fees and charges are

not the only factors to consider, you should be comparing the overall benefits you are receiving.

• Insurance ─ assess the type of insurance cover that is available along with the level of ongoing support you will receive when you need to make a claim.

• Investments ─ it is important to pick a fund that consistently delivers good returns rather than one that performs well in the short term.

• Other benefits ─ consider a fund that provides quality education and advice services while you’re still working as well as retirement options when you stop working.

In 2014, Club Plus Super received the CANSTAR award for “Outstanding Value”.

In a field of more than 350 super funds, 74 of which were analysed in detail as public offer funds, Club Plus Super was awarded the maximum five out of five stars across three out of four categories. This achievement recognises Club Plus Super as being in the top echelon of super providers in the country.

Almost every town in Western Australia with a population of more than 400 people has at least one community sport, social or recreation club. Clubs are the corner-stone and the heart of WA’s unique heritage and have proven that they will support their community in any way they can.

Over the past year, many WA clubs have held a fundraiser or benefit of some kind in order to show their solidarity with their local people and support a community cause.

Many clubs support charities like the Breast Cancer Foundation and have held fundraising events to support these foundations. The Guilderton Country Club is just one example of many who held a ‘Pink Day’ to help raise vital donations for cancer foundations. The event included a full day of bowling for members, guests and sponsors with proceeds from food and drinks were donated.

Upon hearing that Hawthorn Football Club player Shane Crawford would be visiting the Shire on his cycling tour across Australia to raise funds for cancer groups, the Kellerberrin & Districts Club organised a casserole tea with support from the community to help raise funds. Local businesses donated prizes, and the night was a huge success raising more than $5,000.

The Kellerberrin & Districts Country Club also held a unique fundraiser where clubs from across the Shire were asked to nominate members to be sold as ‘slaves’ donating their time to do duties for their buyers. Duties ranged from massages, babysitting, house cleaning, cooking to gardening. A steak night was also held with all profits from the meals distributed amongst the groups involved.

For the past 17-years the Royal Perth Yacht Club has worked in partnership with Mount Lawley Rotary Club and Camp Quality to hold an annual ‘Sailing on the Swan’ for children suffering from cancer and their families.

Children show up dressed in amazing pirate and sailing costumes and spend the day laughing and dolphin-spotting. Following the sailing adventures in a family barbeque lunch at the club even more fun things to do including a bouncy castle, balloon-artists and face painters. All of the staff, volunteers and members get involved in the day and help plan and fundraise for the event. The Royal Perth Yacht Club’s Kelly Scott says the event is completely free of charge for all families involved and often includes families where more than one child or parent has suffered from cancer. “It is a fantastic opportunity for families to leave the drama of everyday life behind them and experience freedom that comes with the sun on your face and the wind in your hard. The laughter, smiles and joy that the event brings to all involved is priceless and is indeed a reminder of how precious life is.”

“Sailing on the Swan” raises awareness within our membership to the ability each members has to make a difference in the life of a family with cancer. This event is about the human spirit, about providing important memory and moment for the family and the child who has cancer, and it’s about providing a source of enjoyment and break from a journey that isn’t easy for anyone involved,” said Kelly.

These are only a couple examples of Western Australia’s amazing club industry being the rock for their local community. No matter whether your club is helping with fundraising, providing a safe environment for disadvantage youth, acting as the emergency meeting point during disasters or helping showcase the talent of community members, you are playing an integral role in the coming together of your community.

Share with us what your club has being doing over the past year to help your community. Your club – your community.

**Examples and quotes have been taken from the nomination forms for the 2014 Clubs WA Clubs in the Community Award.
