Feast of St. Blaise—The Blessing of the Throats

THIS WEEKS HIGHLIGHTS

St. Blaise was the bishop of Sabaste in Amenia during the fourth century and began as a healer who was called the “physician of souls.” He is best known for trea ng a young boy who had an object caught in his throat. The use of the candles when blessing the throats comes from the story of an old woman’s pig which had been miraculously rescued from a wolf by Saint Blaise. When St. Blaise was arrested for being a Chris an by the governor of Cappadocia and of Lesser Armenia, Agricola, the old woman would visit Saint Blaise bringing him food and candles to bring him light in his dark cell.

Thus, February 3rd became his feast day and the “Blessing of the Throats.” Friday, February 3rd, 2017 is the Feast Day of St. Blaise and the Blessing of the Throats. Throats will be Blessed at all the First Friday Masses, at 6:20 am, 8:00 am, 9:00 am and 7:00 pm.
