Hey Key Clubbers!

Happy New Year! As 2013 begins, so does a flurry of great events,

like DCON, the Mr. Key Club Pageant, and elections! (See more

information on DCON on pgs. 3-4, and elections on pg.5) We will be

holding executive board elections in late January and other board

elections will soon follow. These are great opportunities to get more

involved in the club. In the past few years, there have been project

requirements to run for board, and the most famous, 10 projects to go to

DCON. So, now is the time, more than ever, to attend more projects.

With a new year comes a new opportunity. For some, resolutions may

include more community service. So don't hesitate to throw yourself into

the world of service, and most importantly, enjoy what you do. Even the

smallest actions can make a big difference, so act now.

3  KEY CLUB Fremont Key Newsletter

Hey Penguins!

Hope everyone had a wonderful

holiday break and New Year! 2013

brings the wonderful opportunity of a

clean slate, a fresh start, so it's never

oo late to be a better friend, student,

and Key Clubber! Make it  your year to

conquer old fears and try new things!

Of the many cool events coming up

oon, please keep an eye on one of the

most important: Executive Board

elections, for the President, Vice

President, Treasurer, and Secretary

positions! (An application process for

other Board positions, such as Project

Chair, Spirit Chair or Tech Chair, will

open shortly afterwards.) This is your

chance to give back to our club, gain

eadership experience, and really put a

ot of effort into shaping the direction

of Key Club for the next year! Though

t is most definitely a huge

esponsibility, it is so rewarding, and

or me personally, one of the best

experiences of my high school career.

Please read over the descriptions of the

various Exec. Board positions, and

definitely go for it if you think that

ou'd be a ood fit for the ob! As

always, feel free to approach any

Board members after club meetings

or around campus if you have any

other questions. (You can also emailme personally.)

Another event to keep in your

mind is District Convention (DCON)

2013, to be held in Anaheim

from March 22-24th! Held each year

in the spring, it is a chance to look

back on the past year and celebrate all

the wonderful things that Key

Clubbers do! You will be able to hearfrom several speakers with very

inspiring messages, attend

informative workshops on how to be

a better Key Clubber, bond with

fellow Key Clubbers, dance the night

away at the Governor's Ball, and best

of all, show your Key Club PRIDE!

(Be prepared to witness people in

club attire, tutus, capes, face paint, you name it! Many of them will also

be selling Key Club gear, like

collectible pins, wristbands, lanyards,

and even clothing!) With several

thousand dedicated Key Clubbers

from all over the California-Nevada-

Hawaii District attending

DCON, you will definitely g

sense of the immense impac

Key Clubbers are making on world. Because attending DC

does cost money and is

overnight, take this heads-up

start saving up (and butterin

 your parents); it will most

definitely be an unforgettabl

experience that you do not w

to miss!

With these things inmind, be sure to keep in tou

 visiting our Facebook group

website, as well as by going t

club meetings, so that you ca

updates on these really impo

events! (A sneak peek: There

be a Mr. Key Club Pageant

February ;D)

Happy New Year! Although the school year seems like it's just

begun, the Key Club year is in its final season. Instead of disco balls and

graduation caps, the Key Club year ends with District Convention

(DCON), which takes place in Anaheim from March 22-24.

About 3,000 Key Club members from throughout the California-

Nevada-Hawaii District gather at DCON to attend workshops, elect the

new district board, celebrate the year with award presentations, meet new

friends, and have fun. Board members or potential board members are

most encouraged to attend in order to learn about the organization and

how to best lead the club.

The total cost per attendee including registration (includes 3

meals), hotel, and transportation is around $400. The cost to each member

is subsidized by the Kiwanis Club and Key Club fundraising, likely ending

around $200, and partial needs-based scholarships are also available. We

will have a more accurate figure when registration materials are ready, but

you can use this estimate, with 50% due in early February, to open the

discussion with your parents. This year convention does not fall during

spring break, so you will need to evaluate your academic commitments as

well.

You'll be hearing more about DCON in the coming weeks

(including the 10 project minimum), and past attendees will share their

experiences with you. Please talk to me or Mr. C if you or your parents

have any concerns. DCON is one of the most memorable experiences Key

Club has to offer, and we hope that you are able to partake.

 Anaheim, here we come!

Executive Board Positions

Secretary

The secretary is the backbone of the club, responsible

for recording and maintaining the hours of themembers, taking club minutes at meetings, and

submitting the MRF (Monthly Report Form – used to

explain w hat’s going on in our club). If you’re

interested in running for secretary, you should have

knowledge with Excel, check email regularly, be

organized, be precise, and have good time

management skills (at least with hours!). After beingelected, you will not be expected to learn everything

on your own. I will guide you until you feel confident

on your own. Honestly, as long as you are committed

to the club and the responsibilities that come with

this position, you will be a good fit for the job! If you

have any questions, comments, or concerns about the

role, feel free to email me!

P.S. Don't make the same mistake I did. Prepare a

speech! (you'll thank me later :D)

Treasurer

Hey Key Clubbers,

With elections coming up soon, the oh-so

coveted position of Treasurer is up for grabs!

In a nutshell, the club treasurer is responsible for two

things: handling the club treasury (as the name

suggests), and renewing membership dues. Club

finance tasks are simple: report the account monthly to

the district, plan a budget for the club, and handle

deposits and reimbursements. Treasurers also get to

work with the Fundraising Chair. These basic tasks

aren’t as arduous as the other three executive board

positions’, but the treasurer’s main responsibility

doesn’t come until November; in the form of

membership dues. With the amount of work required

in handling large sums of money and updating each

new member’s personal information, diligence,

organization and time management skills are a must. I

hope the last part didn’t scare you, because being able

serve as your club treasurer has certainly been a blast.

With this, I hope whoever wants to be part of

something great goes out there and makes this slightly

older penguin proud :) Keep waddling in service!

President

A president's role is probably everything

you've imagined and more - a very condensed

version would be that I am in charge of making

sure that all aspects of the club (the service, the

club finances, etc.) are running smoothly. There

are several parts to my responsibilities as president.

Number 1 would definitely be communication

with a whole lot of people. Whether it's with other

Board members, our division's Lieutenant

Governor (LTG), our club advisors, or Fremont's

 ASB, communication is absolutely crucial,

especially when planning an event, such as our

November DCM! Expect to communicate almost

daily through email and phone calls; in fact, a

monthly Board meeting is conducted to ensure

that everyone's on the same page. Without

effective and timely communication, it would be

extremely, extremely hard to stay updated on club

affairs, division-wide events, and even district

special events. Speaking of which, attendance to

club and division events is highly encouraged

(think expected). So, you should expect to invest a

whole lot of time and effort outside of just the

weekly club meetings that you will lead. In general,

all of these responsibilities require you to possess

good time management skills, organization, and a

strong commitment to the club. Above all,

 Vice President

It has been an honor to serve as Vice President

of FHS Key Club for the past year! Some of the main

duties of Vice President include coordinating Relay for

Life and Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. These are two of

Key Club’s KEY service projects, so it is essential that

the VP has good organization and communication

skills. The VP works with outside organizations,

including the American Cancer Society and the

Kiwanis Club, in addition to aiding the President and

other board members. It is also important that the VP

is creative and committed, as he/she plays a prominent

role in representing the club and organizing events. Not

only is this a fun role, but there is also some flexibility

within the job to institute your own ideas (with the

approval of the rest of the board). I highly encourage

anyone interested in the position to run; being VP gives

you leadership experience and the opportunity to help

manage the behind-the-scenes aspects of Key Club.

Please feel free to email me at [email protected] if

you have any questions regarding the position!

7 KEY CLUB Fremont Key Newsletter

remember that you are a role model - YOU represent Key Club and Fremont High School - don't take this

responsibility lightly.

So far, it probably sounds like a lot of work - and it IS a lot of work, but don't get me wrong, serving as

president can mean many positives as well! This is the chance for you to give back to our club, to take an immensely

large role in its shaping and direction for the next year. This is the chance to lead a club, one in which members

enthusiastically serve the world and make a difference in our homes, schools, and communities, all the while being

unafraid to wear a purple cape or tutu to show an immense pride for their club. (Can I say that we are THE most

amazing club in the world?!) So, qualified candidates should be some of the most spirited, most enthusiastic, most

passionate Key Clubbers, who are active and responsible club members willing to give it their very best effort. They

should, without a doubt, be proud of the efforts of the club and excited to build an even better one for the next

year! Well, if you think you have what it takes, go for it!
