From the Principal’s Desk

Building strong values into our work with students

A Message from the Superintendent

In Chinook’s Edge, we focus on ensuring our students are engaged in meaningful learning and encouraged to rise to new challenges. We built our mission and vision statements together to reflect these essential core values that inform our work, guide our relationships, and impact the potential of each student as an individual. Our team of teachers and school staff are keen to engage our students in the learning process, because we believe our students are capable of rising to new challenges and accomplishing great things. And they continually prove us right!

Our Mission and Vision statements are present in every classroom in our division, as a reminder to our students of the steadfast values that guide all of our efforts in Chinook’s Edge. We recognize the uniqueness of every child in our care and, through our focus on relationships and on the values that shape character, we encourage each one to achieve excellence.

Kurt Sacher

Superintendent of Schools

Mission:

Chinook’s Edge School Division will engage every student in meaningful learning by challenging, encour-aging and believing in them.

Vision:

Chinook’s Edge School Division will be universally recognized as a collaborative learning community where learning is personalized for all students to achieve success as compassionate and innovative global

citizens.

As our high school begins their second semester, it is hard to believe that the year is half over. Our high school

students and teachers are eager for new courses and renewed energy in their studies. All teachers will be attending the

Palliser District Teachers’ Convention in Calgary on February 21 and 22 where they will have the opportunity to engage

in professional development in a number of different subject areas.

February is a month of kindness and we encourage all of our students and staff to engage in RANDOM ACTS OF

KINDNESS; be it to a peer, a family member, a neighbour or friend. Challenge siblings to complete the kindness bingo

on the front page of this newsletter! Do something together to enjoy Family Day. It is amazing how even the smallest of

gestures can brighten someone’s day.

The 2 day high school ski trip was an awesome experience . Students will continue with winter activities such as

curling and skating. We are extremely thankful to both the Ag Society and the Cremona Curling Club for allowing the

use of their facilities. Some of our high school students will also be having an adventure in the Rocky Mountains on the

upcoming Winter Travel Course.

Spring is just around the corner. Have a great heart month.

Joanna Harvey, Principal

Thanks so much to Scott Daum and Steve Roy who volunteered to

wouldn't be possible.

great to have you back.

Counsellor’s Corner

GRADE 12 STUDENTS AND PARENTS: Many of the students have applied to Post-Secondary at this point

however university deadlines CAN be as late as MARCH 1st depending on the school. If your teenager is still

undecided, it’s worth the $100 to apply. That way they will still have that option after the deadline. If they apply too

late they will have to wait until the following year. There are also residence deadlines so watch the dates carefully! If

you have been “accepted “ at a college or university keep verifying that you have sent in all required

documents and money. Please come and see me if you have questions! I will be going on the ALIS site with the

grade 12s in February and those continuing in Post-Secondary next year will complete their Rutherford applications

THIS SEMESTER on the ALIS site. They only receive the scholarship money if 5 of their subjects average 75% and

they are attending post-secondary. I have a new scholarship book, come and see me if you didn’t receive it!

GRADE 9 PARENTS AND STUDENTS: Remember grade 9s, your averages in your classes will determine your

placement in High School! Keep those grades high and you will have many more Post-Secondary and career choices

available to you! Our Career Class finished in January, thanks again to all of our guest speakers! And thank you to

the parents for your support in the “Take your Kid to Work” program.

GRADE 10 STUDENTS AND PARENTS: These students will be working on the myblueprint site answering

personality questions and studying various occupations and career choices.

GRADE 11 STUDENTS AND PARENTS: I will begin with the Grade 11 interviews in February and I really

encourage them to keep the marks up, especially those who are planning to attend university next year. They are now

accepting students based on the grade 11 results.

GRADES 7 AND 8 PARENTS: I went onto the myblueprint site with these students and they have decided on a

couple of learning goals and answered questions in order to recognize their learning styles and personality traits.

CREMONA CAREERS SERIES by R. Dougherty

How can Cremona school best prepare your child for “life after” our school? Ideas? Suggestions?

Each month I will ask this question to community members, employers, parents, and to past and present students and share their answers along with what we offer in our school!

Elementary school parent: She hopes that we teach her children about finances, for example, how does a credit card work? What is a mortgage?

Response: For many years, the “Money Matters” group has talked with our grade 9-11 stu-dents on anything from debt and credit to budgeting. Response from Mrs. Ward, Gr 10 CAREER AND LIFE MANAGEMENT Teacher: We started our Finances Unit with “how to make a budget” then “how to find a good apartment” then “mortgages.” For example what is a fixed rate” or “you need credit” to get a mortgage. We look at the importance of paying bills on time, how to get a credit card and associated risks. I pointed out the dangers with “payday loans” and the “rent to own” idea. In the past I invited a guest speaker from the bank.

LEADERSHIP UPDATE

Leadership has decided to proclaim February as the month of kindness! All month we

are challenging you to do something kind for others whether it be as simple as opening

the door for someone or asking a new person to play with you at recess. Parents, you

can get in on this too and show your kids what it means to be kind to one another.

Create a random act of kindness calendar at home to help your kids think of new ways

to help others and show their appreciation. This would be a great month to take the

time to thank those in your life ,that you really care for, that you appreciate all that they

do for you. You will also find a kindness bingo card in this newsletter that you can play

along with.

As usual we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day by dressing up in our finest clothes and

maybe we will even have a little bit of chocolate for you all!

We hope you all have a fantastic February break and enjoy some family time on Family

Day, and remember “ be kind, just because.”

Cremona School teachers will join approximately 4000 teachers and pre-service

teachers from the Palliser District Teachers’ Convention Association to gather at the

Calgary Telus Convention Centre and Calgary Hyatt Hotel on February 21st and 22nd,

2019 to hear a myriad of top speakers, including keynotes Dr. Jody Carrington, Aaron

Paquette and Julie & Lowell Taylor, as each provides inspirational and meaningful

professional development. Over 200 sessions and workshops will offer new ideas,

insights and energy to benefit teachers and their students. The convention website

address is www.pdtca.org Please go online and check out this year’s extensive and

exciting list of speakers and sessions being offered for teachers in your area.

SCHOOL COUNCIL UPDATE

The role of School Council is to inform parents, school staff, students and community members

so we can work together to enhance the student experience. School Council offers advisory

input to school administration.

At the January School Council meeting we received a presentation from Elizabeth Surridge on

self-directed learning. She reminded us that as adults most of our learning is self-directed –

from learning to parent, home renovation projects, hobbies we engage in, home business

activities, use of our technology, etc. Our learning is prompted by our curiosity, enthusiasm

and needs. She works with a couple of independent schools in Calgary that predominantly use

the self-directed approach. She challenged us to harness and support the curiosity of our kids

with ever more trust.

Our February 12 meeting will return to a topic that was introduced to us during the December

meeting. At that time concerns were brought forward by parents regarding students accessing

inappropriate internet sites on their personal devices while at school. It was decided to request

that administration gather staff experiences and provide written school procedures on this

topic via e-mail to School Council attendees a couple weeks prior to the February meeting. In

our meeting we will re-visit this topic to consider whether school procedures could usefully be

updated.

The School Council meeting is February 12th at 7 p.m. in the school library.

Thank-you for wanting to take an active involvement in your child’s education.
