St. Xavier University’s “Teacher of the Week” Fourth grade teacher Mrs. Catherine McGuire was honored recently by being named
the St. Xavier University “Teacher of the Week”. A Bridge parent nominated Mrs. McGuire
for the honor which resulted in her receiving $500 for school supplies for her classroom and
mention on the WBBM radio Bears Pre-Game Show. When she’s not busy teaching 4th grade
Mrs. McGuire coaches the girls Volleyball team and Pom Pom team. She even finds time to
sponsor the Arts & Crafts Club, Pet of the Month Club and be a loving mother of two children
(Lauren and Shannon) who attend Bridge School.
Way to go Mrs. McGuire!

Student Council Article
In 2010, Student Council did a lot for Bridge Jr. High. In October, the teachers supported Breast Cancer
awareness by wearing pink! Also, we supported being drug-free by wearing red, and signing a poster telling
why we are drug-free!
It is getting close to the holidays, so Student Council stepped in to make it jolly! We made snow globes for the
rooms to decorate and put on the doors! The 2nd floor winner was Room 203 and the 3rd floor winner was
Room 305. Student Council also collected donations for Toys for Tots! We collected 3 large bags of toys for
underprivileged children!
We look forward to an exciting 2011!
Congratulations to all our Science Fair Participants!
Thank you for making the 2010-2011 Science Fair a Huge Success!

Bridge in the Holiday Spirit
Have you seen the new decorations around Bridge Jr. High? Did you know that there is a
Christmas tree in the office? Well, you can thank our amazing vice principal, Mrs. Giannini.
She donated our new decorations to the school. It beautifies our halls and puts everyone in the

CHESS CLUB!
Chess Club is very fun. Mr. Cardona is the teacher. He is a very
fun teacher that teaches chess really well. Chess is about defend-
ing your pieces and attacking the other player’s pieces. Chess is
all about analyzing, thinking, and strategy. The point of the game
is to “check mate” the king of the other player. To check mate
the king you have to trap him so he can’t move at all. There are a
lot of stories about where chess came from, but people think that
its true birth place is China or Persia. Over the years, people
changed chess. For example, they changed the elephant into the
horse.

A Day at the Museum of Industry (Field Trip)
Have you ever gone to, heard of, or seen the Museum of Science of Industry? Well if you have-
n’t you should go! It’s fun and exciting. You can learn and have fun at the same time. You can
eat there too. You can learn about the human body , trains, planes, air, water, and so much
more. You can go inside a real plane. Plus, you can meet a pilot that actually drove the same
plane.
That day, real lighting struck right above our heads because of a Tesla coil! Also, there are dif-
ferent stairs and each have different colors. You will learn cool things while reading things all
over the place.
Go check this place out and I hope you had fun just like us 5th graders.

Bridge School Journalism Club The New Years of the World
Chinese New Year In China the New Year is very important. They have huge festivals to celebrate the coming of a
new year. Their new years are usually in February. Every year has a different symbol that it
stands for. 2010 is the Year of the Tiger, 2009 was the year of the Ox, 2008 is the Year of the
Rat, and 2011 is going to be the Year of the Rabbit.
Japanese New Year The Japanese New Year is a quite time spent with family and friends. At the stroke of midnight,
Temple bells ring out 108 times to rid the evil spirits from the New Year. Japanese people also
eat mochi, or sticky rice cakes for fun. Children are given money in small decorated envelopes
and traditional games are played.
Indian New Year The Indian New Year is best known as the festival of Deepawali or Divali. The festival lasts
five days and marks the start of the Hindu New Year. However, because the Hindu calendar is a
lunar calendar, which means that it’s based on the movements of the moon, their New Years is
celebrated at different times and places.
American New Year And finally we have the famous American New Year. As you all know it’s celebrated on Janu-
ary 1st, there are fireworks and parties, and it’s a very joyful holiday.
Because America has so many people from different nationalities, we all celebrate the New
Year in different ways. Here are just some of the customs from three different nationalities.
Hope you enjoyed reading about different cultures and tradition.

Chicago Playworks Everything isn’t just about acting. It’s about trust, bravery, and teamwork. That’s why Chica-
go Playworks is going to show you what it’s all about.
Founded in 1925 as the Goodman Children’s Theatre, the company is one of the oldest theatres
in Chicago. There are lots of plays ranging from The Secret Garden to The Monster Under the
Bed. There are awesome events after the plays, too! You can get autographs from the actors on
opening day, go to the ice cream socials, and tons more. The plays are unique and the events
are worth their money, so hurry up to get tickets to a play at the Chicago Playworks!

Mrs. McGuire Gets a Pie in the Face! The fourth grade had a contest to see who could sell the most pies. Kelly sold 16 pies and Lesly
sold 12 pies. Because we sold the most in Room 001 we were able to throw a pie at
Mrs.MCGUIRE! It was so much fun. There was whip cream and sprinkles everywhere.
