On New Year’s Day, January 1, the octave of Christmas (eighth day of Christmas), the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, which is the divine and virginal motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As we celebrate Christmas and begin a new year, the Church focuses our gaze on Mary, the Mother of God. Blessed Pope Paul VI, in his apostolic exhortation Marialis Cultus (1974), called the Solemnity of Mary “a fitting occasion for renewing adoration of the newborn Prince of Peace, for listening once more to the glad tidings of the angels (Lk 2:14), and for imploring from God, through the Queen of Peace, the supreme gift of peace.” Celebrating the Blessed Mother in heart of the Christmas season and at the beginning of a new year is very fitting and beautiful. To help our reflection, I have selected a very beautiful painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder entitled Madonna and Child under and Apple Tree (1525-1530). This painting can help us to understand this feast day, the Christmas season, and the beginning a new year.

In this image, we see the Blessed Mother holding the child Jesus in her arms, upon her lap. Together, Mary, the Mother of God, and the Christ child sit underneath an apple tree (whence the painting gets its name). The symbols that Lucas Cranach the Elder uses are significant to understanding the image and our faith better. The major symbol that Cranach uses in this painting is the apple. We see an apple in baby Jesus’ hand and apples in the tree above. The interpretation of the apple depended on who appeared in the overall image. When Adam and Eve hold an apple, the apple represents sin because of their temptation and fall from grace. In Latin, the word for apple and the word for evil are identical: malum. Due to the similarity of words, people associated the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden, the fruit of which Adam and Eve were forbidden to eat, with an apple tree (Genesis 3:3). When Christ holds an apple, it has a different meaning. If Christ holds an apple, it symbolizes who takes away the sins of the world. The apple is symbolic of Christ, the new Adam, who took upon Himself the burden man's sin. For this reason, when the apple appears in the hands of Adam it means sin, but when it is in the hands of Christ, it symbolizes the fruit of salvation and redemption. This understanding is based upon the Song of Solomon 2:3, "As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.” This is an allusion to Christ. As Christ is the new Adam, so, in tradition, the Virgin Mother is considered to be the “new Eve.” For this reason, an apple placed in the presence of Mary is also an allusion to Mary’s role in salvation. In Cranach’s painting, the Virgin sitting under an apple tree harkens back to Eve’s sin, but the image also anticipates humanity’s redemption through the “new Eve.” The number of apples that Cranach places in the tree is also significant. We count 15 apples. Why? What could that mean? The fifteen apples represent the fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary (5 Joyous, 5 Sorrowful, 5 Glorious). By mediating on the Mysteries of the Rosary, Mary the “new Eve” brings us to Jesus the “new Adam” so that we can share in His salvation and redemption. The Jewish tradition also regards the apple with significance. In Jewish tradition, the apple symbolizes the Garden of Eden because the rabbis say Eden had the scent of an apple orchard. Moreover, the rabbinical tradition calls the Garden “the holy apple orchard.” During the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah), it is customary to eat apples dipped in honey to express hope for a sweet and fruitful new year. For us Christians, Jesus is the sweet apple that returns us back to the sweetness of Paradise. As we begin a new year, let us place our hope in Jesus, the Son of God and the Son of Mary, for a blessed, sweet, and fruitful new year!

El día de Año Nuevo, 1ro de enero, octava de Navidad (octavo día de Navidad), la Iglesia celebra la Solemnidad de María, Santa Madre de Dios, que es la maternidad divina y virginal de la Santísima Virgen María. Al celebrar la Navidad y comenzar un nuevo año, la Iglesia centra nuestra mirada en María, la Madre de Dios. El Santo Papa Pablo VI, en su exhortación apostólica Marialis Cultus (1974), llamó a la solemnidad de María "ocasión oportuna para renovar la adoración del recién nacido Príncipe de Paz, para escuchar una vez más la buena nueva de los ángeles" (Lc 2, 14), y por implorar a Dios, a través de la Reina de la Paz, el don supremo de la paz ". Celebrar a la Santísima Virgen en el corazón de la Navidad y al principio de un nuevo año es muy apropiado y hermoso. Para ayudar a nuestra reflexión, he seleccionado una pintura muy hermosa de Lucas Cranach el Viejo titulada Madonna Y Niño Bajo El Manzano (1525-1530). Esta pintura puede ayudarnos a entender este día de

fiesta, la temporada de Navidad, y el comienzo de un nuevo año. En esta imagen, vemos a la Santísima Madre sosteniendo al Niño Jesús en sus brazos, sobre su regazo. Juntos, María, la Madre de Dios y el niño Cristo se sientan debajo de un manzano (de donde la pintura obtiene su nombre). Los símbolos que Lucas Cranach el Viejo usa son significativos para comprender mejor la imagen y nuestra fe.

El símbolo principal que Cranach utiliza en esta pintura es la manzana. Vemos una manzana en la mano de Jesús y las manzanas arriba en el árbol. La interpretación de la manzana dependía de quién aparecía en la imagen global. Cuando Adán y Eva sostienen una manzana, la manzana representa el pecado debido a su tentación y caida de la gracia. En latín, la palabra manzana y la palabra mal son idénticas: malum. Debido a la semejanza de las palabras, las personas asociaron el Árbol del Conocimiento en el Jardín del Edén, el fruto del cual Adán y Eva estaban prohibidos de comer de un manzano (Génesis 3: 3). Cuando Cristo sostiene una manzana, tiene un significado diferente. Si Cristo sostiene una manzana, simboliza quién quita los pecados del mundo.

La manzana es un símbolo de Cristo, el nuevo Adán, que tomó sobre sí el pecado del hombre. Por esta razón, cuando la manzana aparece en las manos de Adán significa pecado, pero cuando está en las manos de Cristo, simboliza el fruto de la salvación y la redención. Este entendimiento se basa en el Canto de Salomón 2: 3, "Como el manzano entre los árboles del bosque, así es mi amado entre los hijos. Me senté bajo su sombra con gran deleite, y su fruto fue dulce a mi paladar". Esto es una alusión a Cristo, ya que Cristo es el nuevo Adán, así también, en la tradición, la Virgen Madre es considerada como la" nueva Eva. Por esta razón, una manzana colocada en presencia de María es también una alusión al papel de María en la salvación. En la pintura de Cranach, la Virgen sentada bajo un manzano se remonta al pecado de Eva, pero la imagen también anticipa la redención de la humanidad a través de la "nueva Eva". El número de manzanas que Cranach coloca en el árbol también es significativo. Contamos 15 manzanas. ¿Por qué? ¿Qué podría significar eso? Las quince manzanas representan los quince Misterios del Rosario (5 Gozosos, 5 Dolorosos, 5 Gloriosos). Al mediar en los Misterios del Rosario, María la "nueva Eva" nos lleva a Jesús el "nuevo Adán" para que podamos compartir su salvación y redención.

La tradición judía también considera la manzana con un significado. En la tradición judía, la manzana simboliza el Jardín del Edén porque los rabinos dicen que Eden tenía el olor de un huerto de manzanas. Por otra parte, la tradición rabínica llama al jardín "el manzano santo de la manzana." Durante el Año Nuevo judío (Rosh Hashaná), es costumbre comer manzanas sumergidas en miel para expresar esperanza para un año nuevo dulce y fructuoso. Para nosotros los cristianos, Jesús es la manzana dulce que nos devuelve a la dulzura del Paraíso. Al comenzar un nuevo año, pongamos nuestra esperanza en Jesús, el Hijo de Dios y el Hijo de María, por un bendito, dulce y fructífero Año Nuevo!

W Nowy Rok, w oktawę (ósmy dzień) Bożego Narodzenia, Kościół celebruje Uroczystość Świętej Bożej Rodzicielki Maryi – Jej boskie i dziewicze macierzyństwo. Świętując Boże Narodzenie i Nowy Rok, kierujemy nasz wzrok ku Matce Bożej. W swojej adhortacji apostolskiej „Marialis Cultus” z 2 lutego 1974, błogosławiony papież Paweł VI stwierdza, że dzisiejsze święto „daje wspaniałą sposobność do ponawiania uwielbienia, jakie przystoi okazywać narodzonemu Księciu pokoju, by na nowo usłyszeć radosne orędzie ewangeliczne (por. Łk 2,14) oraz by za wstawiennictwem Królowej Pokoju wyprosić u Boga nieoceniony dar pokoju”. Właściwym i pięknym jest oddawanie czci Maryi w Boże Narodzenie oraz u progu Nowego Roku. W ramach naszych dzisiejszych rozważań, wybrałem wspaniały obraz autorstwa Lucasa Cranacha Starszego, zatytułowany: „Madonna z Dzieciątkiem pod jabłonią” (lata 1525-1530). Owe dzieło może nam pomóc lepiej zrozumieć Uroczystość Bożej Rodzicielki, Boże Narodzenie i Nowy Rok. Widzimy tu Maryję trzymającą na kolanach małego Jezusa. Oboje siedzą pod jabłonią (stąd tytuł obrazu). Kluczowe dla zrozumienia zarówno

naszej wiary, jak i tej sceny, są symbole wykorzystane przez artystę. Głównym symbolem, jakim posługuje się tu Cranach, są jabłka. Dzieciątko Jezus trzyma w rączce jabłko i jabłka wiszą też na drzewie nad Nim. Interpretacja, co właściwie to jabłko oznacza, zależy głównie od postaci, która pojawia się na obrazie jako całości. Jeśli mamy na obrazie Adama i Ewę, trzymane przez nich jabłko jest metaforą pokusy i wynikłego z niej Grzechu Pierworodnego. W języku łacińskim istnieje jedno słowo określające zarówno grzech, jak i jabłko: malum. Ze względu na te konotacje, ludzie utożsamiali rajskie Drzewo Wiadomości Dobrego i Złego (Adam i Ewa mieli zakaz spożywania jego owoców) właśnie z jabłonią (Księga Rodzaju 3:3). Jednak jeśli jabłko trzyma Chrystus, wówczas oznacza ono zbawienie, odpuszczenie grzechów. Jabłko jest symbolem Jezusa - „nowego Adama”, Który wziął na Siebie grzechy całego świata. Dlatego symbolizm jabłka jest tak diametralnie różny, w zależności od tego, kto akurat trzyma je w dłoni. Taki sposób pojmowanie tej kwestii opiera się na Pieśni nad Pieśniami Salomona (2:3): „Jak jabłoń wśród drzew leśnych, tak ukochany mój wśród młodzieńców. W upragnionym jego cieniu usiadłam, a owoc jego słodki memu podniebieniu”. Jest to nawiązanie do Chrystusa. Podobnie, jak Tradycja uważa Jezusa za „nowego Adama”, tak Maryja uważana jest za „nową Ewę”. Z tego względu, jabłko znajdujące się w bliskości Matki Bożej jest również nawiązaniem do Jej roli w historii zbawienia. Na obrazie Cranacha, Maryja siedząca pod jabłonią nawiązuje z jednej strony do Ewy i Grzechu Pierworodnego, z drugiej zaś jest zapowiedzią odkupienia ludzkości poprzez „nową Ewę”. Ilość jabłek, jakie Cranach namalował na drzewie także nie jest przypadkowa. Piętnaście jabłek na drzewie reprezentuje 15 Tajemnic Różańca (5 Radosnych, 5 Bolesnych i 5 Chwalebnych). Podczas rozmyślania nad Tajemnicami Różańca, Matka Boża („nowa Ewa”), prowadzi nas do Jezusa („nowego Adama”), abyśmy wszyscy mieli udział w zbawieniu. W tradycji żydowskiej, jabłko jest symbolem Ogrodu Edenu. Rabini twierdzą, że Raj miał woń jabłek i wręcz nazywają to miejsce „świętym sadem”. W trakcie obchodów Rosz ha-Szana (żydowskiego Nowego Roku), zwyczajowo spożywa się jabłka maczane w miodzie. Jest to wyraz nadziei, że ten nowy rok będzie owocny i słodki. Dla nas chrześcijan, Chrystus jest jabłkiem, które przenosi nas do Raju. Módlmy się do Jezusa: Syna Boga i Syna Maryi, o to, aby ten Nowy Rok był błogosławiony i owocny! Źyczę Wszystkim cudownego i spokojnego Nowego, 2017 Roku! Happy New Year! Święta Maryjo, Matko Nieustającej Pomocy, miej nas zawsze w Swej opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK - Jan. 29 to Feb. 3, 2017 Preparations will be in full swing for Catholic Schools Week, which is one of the highlights of our school year. As in years past, Catholic Schools Week will feature events for our students, teachers, parents and community residents who have an interest in sending their children to St. Joseph School. In addition to our excellent academics, we can offer your child a Catholic-based, learning experience. Some of the events include an Open House after the 9:30 Mass on January 29th and various school, parish and family events. We will have a Student/Teacher Day. There will be a Faculty Appreciation Day as well. We hope community residents and prospective parents and students join us during our Open House and other public events. We welcome you and want you to experience the St. Joseph School Spirit and the Spirit of Jesus that is alive and well at St. Joe’s! We are also looking forward our children making their First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, and Confirmation. There are many events on the calendar such as our Mother/Son, Father/Daughter dance, and our annual Corn Beef & Cabbage Dinner where we will join together for a wonderful time. The time passes quickly each year. 2016 was a great year for us and we are looking forward to 2017. Queen of Peace High School, Burbank, recently shared the list of students who were recognized on its honor rolls for the first quarter. A number of students from St. Joseph Parish and School achieved this recognition. Earning a place on the High Honor Roll were Adamari Arroyo, Leslye Guadian, Vianey Guadian, and Briana Janczy. Joyful Again! A Widowed Ministry, will be hosting retreat/workshop from 8:45 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21 and from 8:45 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22 at Our Lady of the Angels House of Prayer, 13820 Main St., Lemont, on Alvernia Manor’s campus. LADIES OF THE ROSARY NEWS BEADS ... Monthly Mass The Ladies of the Rosary gather on the first Sunday of the month at the 7:30 a.m. Mass to attend Mass as a group. All ladies of the parish are invited to attend and celebrate with the group. January Meeting There is no January meeting for the Ladies of the Rosary. Instead, join them for Hawaii in January.
