Woda święcona przypomina nam o naszym własnym chrzcie, kiedy poprzez inwokację Ojca, Syna i Ducha Świętego, oraz polanie głowy wodą święconą, zostaliśmy wyzwoleni z więzów Grzechu Pierworodnego, napełnieni łaską uświęcającą, włączeni w społeczność Kościoła i nazwani Dziećmi Bożymi. Maryjo, Matko Nieustającej Pomocy, miej nas zawsze w Swej opiece. Święta Rodzino, módl się za nami. Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!

FR. BOB’S BRIEFS We are back where we started. Do you remember? Five weeks ago, we began reading through Jesus’

Bread of Life Discourse in the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John. At the beginning of John 6, we read, “Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee. A large crowd followed him because they saw the signs he was performing on the sick.” At that place and time, Jesus miraculously multiplied the five barley loaves and two fish to feed 5,000 people. For the past five weeks, we have heard how this large multitude of people has been constantly been hanging around Jesus. Now, this week, we hear how this vast crowd of people leaves Jesus and go away.

Many of Jesus' disciples who were listening said, "This saying is hard; who can accept it?"Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, "Does this shock you? The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe." As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.” What a different scene it is today, compared to the scene from the previous four weeks. In the previous four weeks, we saw how thousands of people were all gathered around Jesus. Now, they all leave. Jesus is left by Himself by Sea of Galilee. We read in the Gospel of John today, “Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?" Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God." In the beautiful, but poignant image, we see Jesus left alone, except by the Twelve, His only remaining friends. Jesus stands in the center, looking out at the sunset over the Sea of Galilee. Only the Twelve remain with Jesus. So, we are back where we started: Jesus alone with the Twelve at the edge of the Seas of Galilee. It is a sad and somber scene as Jesus and the Twelve look out over the Sea of Galilee by themselves. Where did everybody go? This scene from today’s Gospel is not just a picture isolated to the past. Does this scene not replay throughout the passage of time? Does this scene not replay in our own time and age? Where are all the people? Next time you are at church, look around. What do you see? I saw no more than 70 people at any of the Masses for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary last week. The latest statistics show that 80-85% of Catholics do not go to Sunday Mass every week. Just like in today’s Gospel, everybody seems to have left Jesus. Only a few remain with our Lord. It is very ironic that people do not want communion with Jesus in this life, but they want communion with Jesus in heaven for eternal life. Explain to me how do people expect to have communion with God in heaven, if they do not have communion with God beginning here on earth? That’s the culmination and whole point of Jesus’ Bread of Life discourse that we have been hearing for the past five weeks. Jesus gives us His Flesh and Blood so that He can be in Communion with us. Our Lord desires to be one with, to be in union (com-munion) with you, me, and everybody. At Mass, you see the priest pour some water into the chalice filled with wine. When doing so, the priest prays: “By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.” St. Cyprian (210-258 AD) writes, “when the water is mingled in the cup with wine, the people are made one with Christ.”

However, for most people, we don’t want communion with God. We only follow after God, like the people in the Gospel, because we want God to give us things. God is like a type of Santa Claus, who is supposed to give me things in life. I read once somewhere that “God is not a ‘Cosmic Concierge’ who lives only to satisfy each and every one of our whims.” Yet, that is how we treat God too often in our life. “God give me this. God give me that.” We seek out God to get things from Him. Our God seeks us out to be close to us, to be in communion with us. The Latin root of communion is communio, meaning "fellowship, mutual participation, or association." The relationship that that Jesus is seeking with us is different than the relationship that we seek from Him. Jesus wants fellowship with us. Our Lord desires to share His Divine life and love with us. He asks the same question that He asked the Twelve earlier. "Do you also want to leave?" Do we stay with Jesus or do we leave Him?

Please pray for the safety of all who serve us in the military. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Help, help us with her maternal care, and may St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord. The beautiful painting that we see is entitled John the Baptist Baptizing Christ by Francesco Trevisani (1656-1746). In this colorful image, we see today’s the Gospel story from Gospel of Luke vividly portrayed before our eyes. We see St. John the Baptist dressed in red, pouring water over Jesus’ head, baptizing Christ in the Jordan. In addition, we see the Holy Spirit descending from heaven in the form of a dove, and above the Holy Spirit, we see an image of God the Father, Whose voice we hear in the Gospel say, “You are my

beloved Son; with you I am well pleased." Many of the Fathers of the Church, as well as the medieval Scholastics, saw Christ’s Baptism as the institution of the Sacrament of Baptism. The Church Fathers also teach that Christ’s Baptism purified water for baptism. Christ was not purified by being baptized, since Christ was already pure. Rather, in His baptism, the waters were purified for our sake, that when we are baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, we are purified, not by the removal of dirt from the body, but by the forgiveness of sin and the reception of the Life of God within us. The Church Father St. Maximus of Turin teaches, “Christ is baptized, not to be made holy by the water, but to make the water holy, and by his cleansing to purify the waters which he touched. For the consecration of Christ involves a more significant consecration of the water.” The Church uses Holy Water for Baptism, and we use Holy Water in the Church because it is an important sacramental. Holy Water reminds us of our Baptism, when by the invocation of the Holy Trinity and the pouring of Holy Water, we were set free from Original Sin and all sin, infused with sanctifying grace, incorporated into the Church, and given the title Son or Daughter of God. In making the sign of the cross with the Holy Water, we are mindful that we are called to renew those baptismal promises of rejecting Satan, all His works, and all his empty promises, and to profess our credal faith.

The next time we bless ourselves with Holy Water, remember that the water has been made holy by Christ. We bless ourselves with Holy Water not just to recall and remember our Baptism, but to invoke the blessing and protection of Christ and the Holy Trinity. Let that form the basis of our prayer. The great mystic and Doctor of the Church, St. Teresa of Avila wrote about the power of Holy Water, in her autobiography. Since Holy Water has its origin in Christ’s Baptism and is blessed by God, it carries the power and protection of God. St. Theresa writes, “I have found by experience that there is nothing from which the devils fly more quickly than from holy water. They also fly from the cross, but they return almost immediately. Certainly, the power of holy water must be great; for my part, my soul feels particular comfort in taking it, and very generally a refreshment and interior delight which I cannot express. “I often experience that there is nothing the devils flee from more– without returning– than holy water.” Holy water is an excellent way to protect yourself, your family, or your home from the attacks of the evil one! Please pray for an end to abortion. Pray for the thousands of people who will participate in the March for Life in Washington D.C. on Jan. 18. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Help, help us with loving maternal care, and may St. Joseph pray for us! Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

Dear Parishioners,

Invest in Kids Tax Credit Scholarships

Over the past few weeks I have been writing about the Tax Credit Scholarship and how one can make a donation to the fund.

Last year 71 children’s families applied for the scholarship with 34 being approved. The remaining received limited help or no help because local funds were not enough to finance the need.

This year we are asking our parish families to consider donating to the Tax Credit Program and DESIGNATE THEIR DONATION TO ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL.

With the TWO DOLLARS FOR EVERY DOLLAR DONATED on behalf of St. Joseph, if we could raise $70,000.00 locally, our school would receive $210,000.00 in scholarship money for eligible families who wish to send their child to St. Joseph School.

Anyone interested in helping should speak with Mr. Manetti. The question is: DO I GIVE MY ILLINOIS TAX DOLLARS TO THE STATE OR ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL?

Applying for Tax Credit Scholarships!

If you have school aged children from Kindergarten through High School, you may be eligible to apply for a Tax Credit Scholarship.

The application is done on-line, beginning on Tuesday, January 15th at 7:00 p.m. for Empower Illinois and Tuesday, January 22nd at 8:00 a.m. for Big Shoulders.

We will have our school’s compute lab and library available for parents who may need the use of a computer or help in applying. The school will be open at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 15th for families. We ask that you call the school office at (708) 458-2927 to reserve a spot. The Archdiocese of Chicago website at www.archchicago.org also contains information on applying for the scholarship. You may also wish type in your search engine, ILLINOIS – INVEST IN KIDS PROGRAM. There is helpful information and a place where you can sign-up to receive updates. Should you have any specific questions, please call or stop by the school office.

Thank you for your continued support. Have a great week. God Bless. Lawrence Manetti, Principal
