A SMALL SCHOOL MAKING A BIG DIFFERENCE

Term 2 Welcome back everyone to what promises to be a busy and productive term. It was fantastic to see lots of smiling and happy students returning to school on Tuesday after enjoying a relaxing and fun two weeks of holidays.

School Projects During the holidays the following projects were completed:

• Internal painting of the library • Rejuvenation of front porch area on admin building • Concreting of the area at the front of the storage shed.

Please feel free to come in and check out the renovations.

Bell Times - Friday Starting this Friday, the morning session for Term Two will run from 9:00-10:45am. Lunch will then be held between 10:45am and 11:35am. The reason for the change is so production rehearsals can be conducted in the middle session (11:40am-12:45pm) before assembly. Assemblies will still start at 12:45pm each Friday.

Communication Survey Thank you to the 37 parents/carers who completed the Communication Survey last term. The response rate was great, and your responses have provided the school with very clear feedback for future improvement in effective communication. Please find below the results of this year’s Communication Survey:

Which communication methods do you use to obtain information about school events? Class Dojo – 94% Care Monkey – 89% School Newsletter – 83% Word of Mouth 28% School Website – 8% Ring the school – 8% Facebook 11%

If you contacted your child's teacher this year, did the teacher respond or return your call/email/message: Within 24 hours – 82% Between 24-48 hours -15% Did not return call/email/message – 3%

If you contacted your child's principal or office this year, did the principal/office respond or return your call/email/message: Within 24 hours – 97% Between 24-48 hours - 3% Did not return call/email/message – 0%

Regarding information you received from the school regarding events and activities the information was: Timely Always – 60% Mostly – 40% Sometimes – 0% Never – 0%

Adequate Always – 62% Mostly – 32% Sometimes – 6% Never – 0%

6. What is the school doing well in regard to effective communication? (3 examples) * Frequency of communication is high which is great for kinder parents in that you’re not left wondering. The broad cross section of authors & topics enables you to be engaged with the whole school not just your child’s class. The photos of the kids in whatever they are doing is a great way to kick off conversations at home. We are really happy with the communication, thank you all for your efforts. * Dojo is amazing and the weekly report is a huge help. The information in the newsletter at the beginning of term outlining dates to save is also a major help. The Care Monkey notes are also helpful and informative and easy to access when you are out and about. The school is really helpful in reminding us of upcoming events closer to the date on class dojo newsfeed also. * The newsletter is always a really useful way to learn what is currently happening within the school and plan for upcoming events and activities. It's also a great way to celebrate the achievements of individual students. Dojo and Care Monkey are both fantastic ways to promote paper-free approaches to keeping in touch without losing any of the detail along the way - in fact, I probably get more detail from these tools then I did before!

7. Where can the school improve its communication methods with parents/carers? (3 examples) * Maybe a forum other than Facebook for parents to ask questions & share their thoughts & experiences with staff other than comments related to specific events. Ie it’s probably a silly question but where do you find the lunch order menu & current pricing. On the website I could only find an old price list.

* Some parents receive information from their child’s teacher whilst others are left to find out at the last minute or through talking with other parents. Consistency & better overall communication through dojo would be great.

* It would be great to have the ability to message teachers other than our child’s class teacher, particularly for questions about particular events they are organising. This would be easier to communicate than trying to catch them in the playground.

As a follow up to the survey data, individual classroom teachers will be striving to consistently upload student work samples for viewing and feedback from parents/carers. The school will also work hard to improve the levels of communication for upcoming events, providing the community with timely and relevant information.

Where to next? As the principal of the school it is very important that I am aware of and responsive to the welfare needs of teachers. Feedback I have received from teaching staff is that they love using Class Dojo to communicate with parents. It is a very positive communication tool that has provided teachers and parents with improved levels of communication. However, there are some concerns with the timing of messages to teachers from parents and the content of the messages. To ensure that teachers have a life away from school which they can enjoy with their families and friends the school would like to put the following measures in place to ensure that staff have a healthy balance between professional and personal life:

• If parents/carers need to message a teacher on Class Dojo or email them, please do so between the hours of 8am and 5pm on weekdays. These hours will be when teachers reply to messages as well. We ask that teachers not be contacted outside of these hours during the week and no messages on weekends.

• Teachers will do everything they possibly can to reply to Class Dojo messages, emails etc within a 24-hour period. Any messages sent on the weekend will not be responded to until the following school week.

• If a message needs to be passed onto a child, eg that the child needs to catch the bus in the afternoon, please call the school and the message will be passed on by Kate. Of course, if there is an emergency always ring the school first.

As a school we really appreciate your cooperation in this matter. The school staff understand how invested the Jamberoo community is in the education of their children and welcome the involvement of parents in school activities/events. To make sure we get the balance right between school and home life, we are striving to provide communication tools are effective and timely for the Jamberoo community, whilst ensuring that teachers have a balance in their lives where they are focused on their students during the hours of 8am and 5pm during the week and spending quality time relaxing with their families/friends outside of these hours.

Staffing There has been one change to staffing for Term Two. Miss McLeish will continue in her role as learning support teacher (Monday-Wednesday) and she will now also be teaching Nuninoona on a Thursday and Wonga Wonga on a Friday. Miss McLeish will be taking over from Mrs Pappas. The school would like to thank Mrs Pappas for the amazing job she did educating the students of Nuninoona and Wonga Wonga during Term One.

Premier’s Sporting Challenge The NSW Premier's Sporting Challenge (PSC) encourages all students in public schools to be more active, more often by increasing their participation in sport and physical activity.  This year, Jamberoo Public School students will be participating in the program throughout Term 2. Students and staff will record and track their physical activity over a 10-week period as they aim to be more active, more often. Award levels for the 10 week challenge reflect a daily activity time commitment - either as part of a class or team or as an individual. All types of moderate to vigorous physical activities can count toward an award. Activities may include time spent in a broad range of sports and recreational pursuits during lunchtime, in school sport programs, class time, before or after school and on weekends.

Award Level Daily Activity Time

Bronze 30 minutes per day

Silver  45 minutes per day

Gold 60 minutes per day

Diamond 80 minutes per day

Resilience For those families who don’t know the focus for the Principal’s Award this term is rewarding students who demonstrate resilience, which links in with our positive behaviour expectation of ‘caring for self’. So far this year there have been eight very resilient students who have been acknowledged for their acts of resilience.

Maddison Lukins Luza Marzini Belle Schofield Arlo Baxter Nate Fletcher Holly Tweed Tahlia Walkerden Dimity Blazevski

This term we will be continuing to acknowledge students who demonstrate high levels of resilience. I look forward to presenting Principal’s Awards to these students in Term Two.

Library News We were very excited to open the doors to students this week following a big renovation of the library over the holidays. Classes have enjoyed exploring the new fresh clean space and we are looking forward to a term of inspired learning in the library. History units and borrowing will commence in Week 2 for all students.

Due to re painting and moving books, the shelves are once again in need of organising. I have had the opportunity to fix some confusing shelf arrangements spotted by our wonderful library volunteers, however if a good session of alphabetising sounds like your kind of fun, I would love to have you visit and help out.

Our Scholastic Book Fair is coming up beginning Monday the 13th of May. This is a great opportunity to purchase books for your own children or as gifts while earning rewards for our school.

All the best for Term 2.
