Jacksonville Elementary PTA Volume 4 Issue 9, April 7, 2016
Dear Jacksonville families and staff,
We’re very excited to celebrate our fantastic JES educators and staff – they ROCK! JES Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week is April 11-15. Thanks to Laura Beynon and Lisa Clemmer, students and families will have many fun options to participate – all optional but greatly appreciated. Your PTA support has already helped fund a gift for every staff member, food and refreshments throughout the week, and more. As we offer tremendous thanks to all of our teachers and staff, we join JES in congratulating our Building Operations Supervisor, Michelle Tyrrell, on her TABCO Recognition Award. (PTA was glad to participate in the nomination as she is a wonderful support for all PTA activities.) We are fortunate to have great support and collaboration with so many faculty and staff on all PTA programs and activities. Thanks to the 175 community members who joined in the family fun at the
March 18th Seussical the Musical production by Charm City Players – what a show!
Another fabulous community event will be held May 13th – the JES PTA Spring
Carnival and Silent Auction. Family, staff, friends and neighbors welcome! Many
hands make light work – this community always pulls together to bring amazing fun
to all. Look for our volunteer sign-ups coming soon and THANK YOU in advance for
sharing an hour of your time that evening! Your donations – cake walk, silent
auction, grade baskets, prizes – are also very much appreciated.
As we plan ahead for the 2016-2017 school year, the PTA is always happy to hear
of new ideas and new volunteers. The JES/PTA survey will be distributed soon and
we value your feedback. Also, please consider joining us at our upcoming April 12
meeting if you’re interested in Board involvement for next year.
With gratitude, Whitney Leber, President – [email protected]

GREEN SCHOOL
EARTH DAY ASSEMBLY: Jacksonville will celebrate Earth Day and our Green School efforts with a school-
wide assembly on April 22nd, 9:30-10:30am. Parent volunteers appreciated to help with student
participation and more! Contact Chris Eary ([email protected]).
5th GRADE GARDEN/GREEN SCHOOL CLUB SPRINGS INTO ACTION!
The 5th Grade Garden Club is ready for Spring with plans to weed and plant around the school, including
planters by the JES front doors and Johnny’s & Riley’s Garden by the 2nd/3rd Grade hallway exit. JES and the
PTA greatly appreciate the students’ hard work and that of volunteer club leader and Green School chair Chris
Eary.
All students and staff are invited to WEAR GREEN on
Earth Day – April 22nd – but even more importantly, we
can GO GREEN with trash-free lunches! In honor of Earth
Day, let’s aim for TRASH-FREE LUNCHES IN APRIL. Bring
food in reusable containers instead of disposable baggies,
and recycle your bottles, pouches, and cafeteria trays in
the appropriate bins in the cafeteria. A tremendous
amount of unopened packaged food is thrown away
every day at Jacksonville Elementary. Instead of
throwing away your unopened non-perishables such as
granola bars, packs of crackers, applesauce pouches, and
water bottles…please take them home to enjoy later (or
share them at home with someone else who will).
New this year! Every classroom has a collection bucket for any brand
of used markers, highlighters, and dry erase markers as well as plastic
tape dispensers. These are repurposed through the CRAYOLA
COLORCYCLE program, coordinated by Elizabeth McCarthy
([email protected]). We’ve sent in 200 markers so far this year,
preventing them from entering landfills! You are welcome to send
them in from home as well. (Please note: glue sticks are no longer
collected as no program currently recycles them.)
Many thanks to the dedicated parent
volunteers, coordinated by Chris Eary, who
run our TERRACYCLE program! Capri Sun,
Go-Go Squeez, and similar pouches are
collected in the JES Cafeteria at lunch, then
packaged and mailed to Terracycle (along
with tape dispensers from classrooms). We
earn points that we can “spend” to help the
environment – students will vote on which
project to support with our 36,000 points!
