Nancy Young Elementary PTA 2012-2013

From the PTA President...

Well, I think we can all agree, we have been successful in reinforcing our theme - Make Every Day Count - throughout the 2012/2013 school year!

Nancy Young PTA was fortunate to bring home a variety of Awards from the District 36 Awards Night on April 23rd.

Joanne Jachimiec received the Newsletter Award for the “Newsplash,” and we all can see why! Her time and dedication in putting our newsletter together is always outstanding and appreciated by all.

Carolyn Fichte and her One Book, One School Committee received the Outstanding Programming Award for the development, execution, and creativity of this program. The purpose of the One Book program was to provide a school wide reading initiative which would bring together students, teachers, and family members by reading, sharing, and discussing one book. It is meant to be a literacy and school community building program. This program embraced the mission of the PTA as it engaged and empowered the entire school community. Thank you to all that participated.

I am also excited to announce that Nancy Young PTA was chosen to receive the “Reaching for the Stars” Outstanding Local Unit Award for 2012-2013. In the words of Winston Churchill, “You Make a Living by What You Get; You Make a Life by What You Give.” As we all know, the excellent programs, events, opportunities that take place at Nancy Young can be credited to our wonderful parents that “give” their time and talent and our dedicated teachers and staff that also “give” by encouraging, assisting, and engaging our students to be their very best! Thank you for all you do!

One of those great programs that speaks for itself is the 4th Grade State Fair. Thank you to Tammi Arostegui and Nancy Casselman for coordinating, our 4th grade parents for volunteering, and our 4thGrade Teachers for making it all happen. I would also like to thank Mr. Pape for his direction of the Fifty Nifty United States program!

Please join us on May 11th for our Nancy Young 5K/ 1mile Run under the new exciting name: Nancy Young Dolphin Dash. This is an event you don’t want to miss. It is not too late to register online at www.nancyyoungrun.com.

Finally, I hope to see you at the last, and my final PTA Meeting as Nancy Young PTA President. I thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve. It has been an exciting two years. I look forward to voting in our new slate of officers for 2013-14 school year.

Please note the meeting date has changed.

We will now be meeting on Tuesday, May 14, at 9:15 in the MPR.

Dear Young Families,

The 2012-13 school year is quickly coming to a close. We have had a great year learning and growing together as a school community. Young students are truly an empathetic group of children who have focused on demonstrating the 3R’s (Respecting Others, Self, and Property) throughout the school year.

Young students have worked very hard as they have explored and learned about new topics and objectives. In particular, Young staff have implemented the Math Common Standards across all grade levels. Our teachers have worked very hard with our students to help them gain a better and a deeper understanding and mastery of math learning objectives.

I would like to recognize and thank our parent community for their continued support. Our school community is truly made stronger by the partnership that Young has with our parents, students, and staff. Young parents provide us with an incredible amount of assistance and encouragement for which I am truly grateful.

The last weeks of school are filled with many activities. The Fifth Grade Concert, Chorus and Drum Ensemble Concert, the Dolphin Dash, Field Day, the End of the Year Assembly, and the Fine Arts Festival at Metea are some of the events that will occur in May.

Please find below a condensed list of the various activities that occurred over the course of the year. This has been a full year and we have enjoyed and participated in many fun filled events sponsored by Young School and the Young PTA.

THANK YOU!!

We would like to extend a HUGE thank you to all of our families for supporting the Book Fair this spring. We had amazing volunteers who were so generous with their time. Thank you to all who stopped by during Open House. Our fair was a great success. A portion of all Book Fair sales comes back to NYE. These funds are used to enhance the library collection and provide resources to students and teachers. Thank you again for all that you do to support the LMC.

Thank you so much to all of the volunteers who helped compile information for this year's 5th Grade Memory Book! Our volunteers helped in so many ways: typing, taking photos, making phone calls, sending emails, etc.. Your work and dedication to our kids is very much appreciated. Thank you also to all who purchased Memory Book Dedications - what a great way to send a special message to one of our 5th graders and help make the Memory Book even better! Our hope is that the Memory Book will be a cherished memento of this year's 5th graders time at Nancy Young.

A huge THANK YOU to all of the volunteers who worked on 4th Grade State Fair. The chairs - Tammi Arostegui and Nancy Casselman did a wonderful job of organizing and directing the flow of events. The coutless volunteers - Erica Jannisch, Anne Vosmik, Jen Weisman, Zena Weir, Dawn Malartsik, Missy Brosius, Marie Satinover, Joanna Thorne, Michelle Plummer, Michelle Butler, Pam McCallum, Anne Marie Fitzgerald, Renee Golminas, Kathi Day, Dale Cox, Kim Kim, Kristen Flanders, Katrina Robison, Farzana Valji-Kherani, Janelle Chettayar, Suki Chen, Nancy Gracia, Margie Wesolowski, Jennifer Radina Rose Batiste, Julie Lagvankar, Juanita Solis, Rebecca Curtis, Shweta Singh and Nancy Saucedo– cutting paper dolls, cutting and baking shrinky dinks, binding reports, helping with set-up, and with the State Fair party.

The 4th grade team (Miss Benzin, Mrs. Bluhm, Mrs. Dodd, Mrs. Hartje and Mr. Weis) and their students spent a great deal of time preparing for State Fair. Mr. Pape led the students in an energetic State Fair evening performance, ending with a NYE Favorite “Fifty Nifty”. The day after our program, the students relaxed at their room party, and played a game of State Fair Jeopardy, with NYE’s favorite game show host - Dr. Bell. Also, a HUGE thank you to the custodians (Jay Novotny) for the set-up and take-down of all of the tables & chairs for the event, and for the SUPER-quick clean-up after lunches, so we could have the party in the MPR.

A big thank you to the members of the 2013 NYE PTA Nominating Committee: Tammi Arostegui, Wendy Balda, Amy Coryell, Kristine Luster, Shannon Lynch, Sherri Nugent, Marie Satinover, Jen Weisman. These ladies volunteered to perform the important task of evaluating and nominating the leaders to serve on next year's PTA Board. We appreciate their time and effort and their willingness to serve on the committee.

Thank you to Jenn Lester for her creativity and time put forth on this year’s Earth Week activities and to all of the NYE students and teachers that participated in the fun!! We received many posters in response to our question “What does Earth Day mean to me?” and had great fun with our Earth spirit days!! Thank you to everyone who contributed coins for our Flower Power Coin Wars. We raised $384.70 to plant a beautiful garden at the school. The garden will be dedicated to Mrs. Lanci’s class as they won the war and raised the most money for the flowers.

You will get these photos back. If it is easier, please feel free to email the photo to Robin Schoolman at [email protected] - be sure to put your child's name and teacher in the subject line.

Also - if you happen to have any pictures of 5th graders from this school year that we can use for the Memory Book, please email those to Robin Schoolman ASAP, thank you!!!

We are working hard to make this year's Memory Book extra special for your children - but we need YOUR help!!!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Robin Schoolman at [email protected] or Amy Coryell at [email protected].

STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK

Dear Young Parents,

Next week, May 6th through May 10th, is Staff Appreciation Week. The theme is “Take Me Out to the Ballgame!” The Staff Appreciation Committee has the week filled with events to show the staff how much they are appreciated for all they do for the NYE students.

Below is a summary of next week’s events:

Monday – Opening Day!! Wear your favorite baseball hat. The staff will enjoy nachos and hot dogs in the staff lounge. Tuesday – Team up with your teacher! Wear your favorite team jersey or t-shirt. The staff will be treated to breakfast in the staff lounge and parent volunteers will take care of bus line/parent drop-off.

Wednesday – Barista Day and dessert day for the Staff! The Bakers R Us Committee will be providing decadent desserts for the staff and a barista station will be set up with smoothies, iced coffee, and iced tea.

Thursday – Show your teacher you appreciate everything they do by wearing your teacher’s favorite color. Candy grams purchased by the students will be delivered on this day.

Friday – Let’s do some grilling!! We will be hosting a grilled luncheon for the staff. Show them how much your appreciate them being a part of the NYE team by wearing NYE apparel.

On the following page there are printable “notes” for students to cut out, decorate, and write words of “appreciation” on for their teachers. We ask the students to decorate and present them to their favorite teacher any day during Staff Appreciation Week. Be creative!

Don’t let our outline limit your participation. You can send in notes or pictures of your own to show the staff how much you appreciate them!

Thank you for your participation in making this a special week for the staff.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact either one of us below.

DOLPHIN DEPOT

BOX TOPS

Have your students visited the Dolphin Depot lately?

The NYE PTA offers a “school store” for our students that is stocked with inexpensive school supply items for purchase. The Dolphin Depot is set up in the Multi-Purpose Room on (most) Thursday mornings from 8:50am – 9:05am for our Young Dolphins to shop for supplies and other fun items. Prices for most items range from $0.05 to $2.00. Here are some of the fun and useful items students can purchase:

Send your student with some pocket money (that perhaps they have earned!), so they can practice adding amounts, counting change, and being responsible with money. SMALL bills are greatly appreciated, and we DO NOT accept checks or credit cards.

Thursday, May 2thThursday, May 9thThursday, May 23thThursday, May 30th

Please be sure to remind your student to check in with their classroom teacher BEFORE going to the Dolphin Depot to avoid being marked tardy.

If you have any questions about the Dolphin Depot school store, please contact Beth Zeitner at 630-499-9664 or [email protected] or Amy Coryell at 630-585-9026 or [email protected].

THANK YOU to all the families that sent in their box top labels throughout the school year. You did a FABULOUS job!

Our budget goal was to make $1,800 and we made a total of $2,400. That means the NYE families brought in a total of 24,000 box tops. THANK YOU again.

** PLEASE NOTE that all box tops that are collected through the remainder of this school year will be applied toward the October 2013 shipment. **

THANK YOU again the Spirit Council for counting the labels weekly. This is a HUGE help for the PTA.
