Junior Achievement of South Central PA is a dynamic, growing organization with more than 2,500 volunteers and hundreds of corporate and individual sponsors. JA programs are for all students, Kindergarten to Grade 12, and touch the lives of more than 41,000 students in South Central PA. In terms of market share, 25% of all students participate in JA programs each year. The national average for JA USA is 9%. Additionally, the efficiency of JA programs versus revenue is continually assessed to ensure a high return on investment for donors. For 2013-14, the average cost per student is $26.49, ranking JASCPA in the top third of all JA offices. More than 80% of JA's $1 million budget directly supports educational programs for 41,000 local students.

The Reality of Today

According to the Commission on Crime and Delinquency, the Pennsylvania inmate population has increased by 35.2% from 2000 to 2011. The annual cost per inmate is approximately $42,000 versus the approximate annual cost of $12,500 to educate a student. (U.S. Census Bureau.)

More than half (53%) of U.S. companies report a major challenge in recruiting non-managerial

employees with the skills and knowledge needed. (Bridgeland, J., Milano, J., & Rosenblum, E. (2011). Across the great divide: Perspectives of CEOs and College Presidents on America’s higher education and skills gap.)

Every day, 7,000 students drop out of high school. Last year, 1.3 million failed to graduate. By 2020,

15 million more will join them. Overall, young people who drop out are twice as likely as graduates to be unemployed; three times as likely to live in poverty; eight times as likely to wind up in prison; and twice as likely to become the parent of a child who drops out of school. (JA USA. (2012) JA Graduation Pathways.)

Scores from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) dropped again in 2012.

The United States is now ranked 36th in math, 28th in science, and 24th in reading among 15-year olds worldwide.

A technology survey shows that 63% of teens text to communicate, and on a daily basis, only 35% of

teens socialize with others outside of school. (www.pewinternet.org)

STEM Summit Each STEM Summit day needs approximately 30 business volunteers to include 10 career panelists and other individuals to assist with the competitions and experiments. This totals 750 volunteers for the 2014-15 school year. This is a full day assignment beginning at 7 AM and running until about 3 PM. The STEM Summit is a day-long program held at a high school consisting of nine thirty-minute sessions. There are three sets of experiments, three sets of competitions, and three sets of career panel presentations. The fast pace and constant motion help create an atmosphere of excitement and energy. The goal of the STEM Summit is to inspire students to pursue an academic STEM focus in the remainder of their high school courses to help prepare them for STEM careers in the future. After the completion of the Summit, guidance counselors have a foundation to work with students on appropriate school course work. Volunteer Needs:

Career Panelists - Each volunteer has a specific STEM career and is able to share their background with the students. The goal of the career panel is for students to find the presenters interesting, engaging, and inspiring; props are encouraged. The emphasis is on the presenter’s career journey and how they chose their career. They will spend about 8 minutes nine different times telling small groups of students about their career journey and answering questions as time allows.

Competition Assistants - There are three competitions. The 80-20 is a mechanical engineering competition where students assemble an object using aluminum extrusion components. The marshmallow challenge is a civil engineering challenge where students build the tallest tower using spaghetti. The final competition is a relay competition which combines math, electrical engineering, nuclear engineering, aerospace engineering, and culminates with a civil engineering activity where the student walks barefoot across eight dozen eggs.

Experiment Facilitators - Experiments give students an opportunity to be hands-on with science. There are three sets of experiments: one focuses on a series of health science experiments, another focuses on chemistry, and the final on physics.

In-Class Programs A want versus a need. How to balance a checkbook. Don't you wish that someone had taught you those things as you were growing up? Now there is someone. YOU. All we need is your enthusiasm, life experience, and a willingness to teach children about how you took chances and shot for the stars. Junior Achievement provides the training, curriculum, and a classroom ready to meet you.

Elementary School: (Weekly) Five 30-45 minutes lessons Middle/High School: (Weekly) One observation and five 45-55 minutes lessons JA in a Day: (Middle Grades) One time commitment of one full school day (example: 7:30 - 3:30)

In-Class volunteers are needed during regular school days throughout the entire school year. With the exception of JA in a Day, volunteers coordinate the specific days they visit the classrooms directly with teacher, so there is flexibility with the schedule. JA in a Day experiences are pre-arranged events at specific schools. For more information and an up-to-date list of volunteer needs, visit www.jascpa.org.

The Challenge at Finance Park Each day, 8-14 volunteers are needed to serve as financial advisors for a group of six students. A total of 100 volunteers are needed for the 2014-15 school year. The time commitment is approximately 5 hours, 8 AM – 1 PM. Frequently Asked Questions: What are the roles and responsibilities of a volunteer Financial Advisor during the simulation?

The volunteer leads a group of up to six students through a series of budget decisions. The financial advisor’s guide provides a series of questions to help create group discussion.

The volunteer needs to be comfortable in leading small group discussion. This skill set includes

being able to react to group dynamics, the ability to pose directed or open questions based upon participation, and the ability to help a group move through a series of steps with time constraints.

What should a volunteer plan on for the day at The Challenge at Finance Park?

Plan on spending approximately 5 hours at the JA facility. Plan to arrive one hour before the students’ arrival on the day of the visit for the required training.

Training will start promptly.

How much financial knowledge should a volunteer have?

Volunteers should understand basic budgeting. The financial advisor’s guide has answer keys to all discussion questions and worksheet.

Volunteers should be comfortable working one-on-one with high school students with math. Most importantly, volunteers need to be comfortable as discussion leaders in small groups. They

will be responsible for providing direction of group discussion using the guide prompts to assist.

JA Titan Challenge

Monday, March 9, 2015 8:30 – 1:30 PM

Penn State Harrisburg & Penn State York Now in its 11th year, the JA Titan Challenge brings together teams of two high school students to form companies to compete in a day-long computer simulation. As a team, the business executives make decisions in the marketplace by adjusting the price, production, marketing, capital investment, research & development, and charitable giving. Companies compete through several rounds of the simulation and are challenged to outperform the competition in profit, sales, and market share. The event welcomes all high school students and is held simultaneously at two locations – Penn State York and Central Penn College. Students get a feel for the global market as their companies compete against others at both sites. Ultimate success is awarded through a Performance Index, a weighted measurement of aspects of companies’ value and performance. Students from top performing companies will take home scholarship awards at the end of the event. JA Titan Challenge: Scholarship Sponsor $500 This sponsorship helps provide scholarships to the top performing companies in the JA Titan Challenge. JA Titan Challenge: School Sponsor $250 This sponsorship helps to provide the JA Titan experience for one local high school to include the JA Titan in-class program materials and the school’s participation in the JA Titan Challenge & Entrepreneurial Exchange. In-Kind Support In-Kind support can come in many shapes and sizes to include printing and photocopying, donations of items that can be used in the auction at the wine event, or supplies such as chemicals to help with the STEM initiative and other JA programs. Wine Event Auction JA is always in search of a variety of items for the silent and live auctions held at the wine event (April 11, 2015). Items have included jewelry, sports memorabilia, gift certificates for various restaurants or services, tickets to sporting or cultural events, art work, fine wine, and vacation homes. The fair market value of each item donated is tax-deductible, and JA will provide a receipt. Printing & photocopying JA programs require a substantial amount of printed materials. These range in quality from professionally-printed invitations and programs to black & white photocopies for the REAL Life and STEM Summit. Donations of copy paper and/or offers to print some of these materials are greatly appreciated and directly save money, allowing JA to redirect those funds to other programs. Supplies Donations of computers, monitors, and other equipment are also a big help for use in JA BizTown. Further, the STEM Summit and REAL Life programs both require many consumable materials including various chemicals, eggs, latex gloves, etc. Finally, door prizes for the bowling events are always needed and can be any small item in the $10-15 price range.
