HANS ANDERSON, County Auditor. GEORGE UDENBY, Chairman. HIGHWAY OFFICIALS INVITED TO MEET IN SALT LAKE CITY Salt Lake City, Dec. 28.—Highway officials representing thirteen western and northwestern states have- been in- vited to meet here, Friday, January 3, to consider means of saving federal road appropriations to states of large area and small population. . The in- vitations have been sent out by Ira R. Browning, state road engineer for Utah. v Representatives of all' western states, including North and South Da- kota, have been invited, and It is un- derstood that all will send delegates. One of the last acts of the annual,, meeting of state highway officials, held recently in Chicago, according to Mr. Browning, was to place the meet- ing on record as favoring a proposed law providing for a change the ratio of government support of state high- ways in order to give commonwealths of large area and small population a.: better opportunity to meet require- ments. It was decided, however, to leave the basis of the recommenda- ' tion to be. fixed at a meeting of rep- resentatives of the states most inter- - ested—those of the west and north- west. Under the present law the federal and state government divide appro- priations for federal aid road projects on a basis of fifty per cent each. In western states, some of which have from one to ten population to the square mile, notwithstanding long ^ stretches of road to be built, repaired, improved and maintained, it is diffi- cult to meet the requirement. It is Jioped to find a remedy for this situa- tion at the meeting scheduled for January 3. MANY RELATIVES~OF LA CROSSE SYRIANS DIE IN HOLY LANDS La Crosse, Wis., Dec. 28.—Thirty- one relatives of La Crosse Syrians have died during the war In the Holy Land, victims of disease, starvation and Turkish atrocities, according to a letter received from Palestine. The letter in part follows: "Wc have suffered with famine leprosy, cholera and many kinds of fevers, with such severe punishments from our masters as hanging, torture and other means of execution. Many people were eating the bodies of their BOLSHEVISM SPREADS. Mintevideo, "Uruguay, Dec. 27.—As a result of Maximalist agitation, two cavalry regiments are encamped about the Central railway station here. Several other regiments have taken up quarters on the outskirts of tbs city. HIGHWAY OFFICIALS INVITED TO MEET

IN SALT LAKE CITY Salt Lake City, Dec. 28.—Highway

officials representing thirteen western and northwestern states have- been invited to meet here, Friday, January 3, to consider means of saving federal road appropriations to states of large area and small population. . The invitations have been sent out by Ira R. Browning, state road engineer for Utah. v

Representatives of all' western states, including North and South Dakota, have been invited, and It is understood that all will send delegates.

One of the last acts of the annual,, meeting of state highway officials, held recently in Chicago, according to Mr. Browning, was to place the meeting on record as favoring a proposed law providing for a change the ratio of government support of state highways in order to give commonwealths of large area and small population a.: better opportunity to meet requirements. It was decided, however, to leave the basis of the recommenda- ' tion to be. fixed at a meeting of representatives of the states most inter- -ested—those of the west and north- • west.

Under the present law the federal and state government divide appropriations for federal aid road projects on a basis of fifty per cent each. In western states, some of which have from one to ten population to the square mile, notwithstanding long ^ stretches of road to be built, repaired, improved and maintained, it is difficult to meet the requirement. It is Jioped to find a remedy for this situation at the meeting scheduled for January 3.
